There is no reliable one-click Unity-to-Godot or Unity-to-Unreal conversion. A successful move is a staged rebuild: freeze the Unity project as a reference, preserve source assets, create a clean destination project, migrate a representative vertical slice, and then recreate and test each system. Meshes, textures, audio and other source files can often be reused; scenes, prefabs, materials, import settings and gameplay code generally cannot.
What a Unity migration really involves
Unity stores both authored content and engine-specific state. The authored content includes textures, meshes, animation source files, audio, fonts, video and data. Engine state includes .unity scenes, prefabs, component relationships, serialized inspector values, import metadata, shaders, input configuration and package integrations. Godot and Unreal interpret those concepts differently, so copying a project folder does not recreate the same game.
Treat the Unity build as the behavioral reference while the destination project is built independently. Keep the original project reproducible until the new build passes agreed acceptance tests. This approach lets you compare a known scene and gameplay path instead of trying to diagnose hundreds of unrelated changes after a bulk import.
Which Unity assets can be reused?
Reuse is most dependable when you export original source files rather than engine-generated packages. Epic’s migration guidance maps common Unity content to Unreal asset types and interchange formats. The same source files can usually be brought into Godot, but each importer still needs verification.

| Unity source content | Typical interchange format | Destination treatment |
|---|---|---|
| Static meshes | FBX or OBJ | Import as Unreal Static Mesh assets or equivalent Godot mesh resources; verify scale, axes, pivots, normals and material slots. |
| Skeletal meshes | FBX; USD is also documented for skeletal-mesh workflows in Unreal | Recreate skeleton and skinning setup, then test retargeting and root motion. |
| Animation clips | FBX, OBJ or ABC, depending on the asset and workflow | Rebuild animation libraries, state machines and transitions in the target engine. |
| Textures | Common image formats such as PNG, JPEG or TIFF | Recreate materials and confirm color space, channel packing, mipmaps and compression. |
| Audio | WAV, OGG, FLAC, AIF, OPUS or MP3 | Reimport with target sample-rate, streaming and compression settings. |
| Fonts, video and authored data | Original source format | Import through the destination engine’s supported pipeline and reconnect references manually. |
Formats are containers, not guarantees of identical results. An FBX may carry geometry and animation while leaving behind Unity-specific material graphs, prefab overrides, physics settings or import decisions. Plan a review for every asset category.
Why a .unitypackage is not a conversion format
Unity’s .unitypackage bundles collections of Unity project assets for distribution inside Unity. It is not a Godot project or an Unreal project. Changing source files or Unity import settings also causes Unity to reimport content, so preserve the original files and their settings before exporting. If an asset exists only inside a package, unpack it in a controlled copy of the Unity project and export the underlying source rather than treating the package as a destination-engine archive.
What cannot be transferred directly
Epic’s documentation explicitly states that Unity C# scripts and Bolt visual-scripting files cannot be directly exported from Unity and imported into Unreal Engine. Godot likewise requires scripts to be rewritten against its own APIs. The same limitation applies to most engine behavior, even when an object looks identical in the editor.
- Unity scenes and prefab hierarchies must be represented using the destination engine’s scene or level model.
- Materials, Shader Graph or hand-written shaders, post-processing and render-pipeline settings need new implementations.
- Input actions, physics layers, collision responses, animation controllers, UI layouts and event wiring must be recreated.
- Save formats, networking, analytics, platform services, native SDKs and editor extensions need a compatibility plan or replacement.
- Unity package settings and plugin APIs do not carry over merely because their files were copied.
Godot or Unreal: how the project models differ
Godot uses scenes and nodes
Unity’s GameObject/component model does not map one-for-one to Godot. Godot organizes content in scene files made of nodes; scenes can be nested and inherited. A reusable Unity prefab normally becomes a Godot scene with a root node and child nodes for visuals, collision, audio, scripts and other responsibilities. A large Unity hierarchy may need to be split into several focused scenes so that ownership and instancing remain clear.
Scripts must be rewritten against Godot’s node lifecycle, signals, resources, input map and physics APIs. Inspector-exposed fields, serialized references and custom editor tools also need new implementations. Expect to revisit scene ownership, initialization order and how objects find one another rather than translating class names mechanically.

Unreal uses levels, Actors, Components and the Content Browser
Unreal’s Content Browser is the destination for imported assets and authored content. Unity scenes generally become Unreal levels; GameObjects become Actors; component behavior is rebuilt with Actor Components, scene components, Blueprints or C++. Prefabs may be approximated with Blueprint Classes, packed level actors or reusable component assemblies, depending on whether the object is meant to be spawned, edited as a group or streamed as level content.
Blueprints can reproduce many gameplay behaviors without immediately writing C++, but they are not an importer for Unity visual scripting. C++ is useful for systems that need custom performance, platform access or shared framework code. Either route requires new input, physics, UI, animation, save and networking code.

Unreal documents direct import paths for common interchange formats, while Godot’s importers and plugins must be checked asset by asset. Audit every Unity package and native SDK before choosing an engine. A package that supplies rendering, terrain, dialogue, networking or platform services may have no equivalent, making a custom port necessary.
A staged migration workflow
1. Inventory the project and freeze it
Record the exact Unity version, package and plugin versions, build targets, source-control revision, licenses, native integrations and external services. Create an inventory of every scene, prefab, script, shader, animation controller, save format and platform-specific feature. Mark which files are original source and which are generated or engine-owned.
After the inventory, establish a freeze point. Allow only critical fixes in Unity and tag the revision used for comparison builds. Capture a clean build for each supported platform so that later visual or behavioral differences can be traced to the migration rather than an unnoticed Unity change.

2. Separate source assets from engine state
Copy original textures, meshes, audio, fonts, videos, animation source and authored data into a neutral source repository. Preserve naming and folder provenance, but do not carry Unity’s Library, temporary caches or generated build directories into the new project. Keep a mapping document from each Unity asset path and GUID to its planned Godot resource or Unreal asset path.

3. Select a representative vertical slice
Choose one playable scene, not the easiest collection of isolated assets. It should exercise representative rendering, input, animation, UI, audio, save/load and at least one external dependency. A vertical slice exposes scale problems, missing plugins, shader gaps and architecture mismatches while the amount of content is still manageable. Do not start by importing the entire project.
4. Create a clean destination project
Install the target engine version and verify that required exporters, SDKs and plugins support it. Create the project from scratch. Establish folders, naming rules, coordinate and unit conventions, render settings, input actions, quality profiles and build configurations before importing content. Decide where source files live outside the engine project and how generated resources are tracked.
5. Import and normalize assets
Re-export meshes and animations when the original export is unsuitable. For every representative asset, check:
- unit scale, up axis, handedness and object transforms;
- pivot placement, smoothing groups, normals, tangents and skin weights;
- material slots, texture channel assignments, color space, mipmaps and compression;
- animation frame rate, skeleton naming, retargeting, additive tracks and root-motion behavior;
- audio sample rate, channel layout, streaming mode and compression;
- collision geometry, navigation metadata and any authored data references.
Record the import settings that produce the expected result. Reuse that documented profile for later batches instead of assuming the engine’s defaults match Unity’s.

6. Translate the project structure
In Godot, convert reusable prefabs into scenes and nodes, then nest those scenes into gameplay scenes. In Unreal, place imported assets in the Content Browser, convert scenes to levels and map GameObjects to Actors and Components. Recreate ownership and lifecycle rules explicitly; an identical hierarchy of names does not guarantee identical initialization or destruction behavior.
7. Rebuild behavior in dependency order
Port systems from foundational data to features that depend on them:
- Define the data model, configuration resources and identifiers used by the game.
- Implement the core loop and game-state transitions.
- Recreate input actions and device-specific bindings.
- Port movement, collision and physics rules.
- Rebuild camera behavior and interaction traces.
- Connect UI screens, focus rules, localization and accessibility behavior.
- Recreate animation graphs, state transitions and root-motion handling.
- Port AI, navigation, spawning and encounter logic.
- Implement save/load conversion and versioning.
- Rebuild networking, platform services, analytics and editor tooling.
Rewrite shaders and materials instead of assuming visual parity. A shader that depends on Unity’s render pipeline, keywords or pass ordering may need a different design in Godot or Unreal. Likewise, an animation controller, UI event or physics callback should be treated as a behavior specification to implement and test, not as text to translate.
8. Validate continuously
Run the same scripted gameplay path in Unity and the destination build at every milestone. Compare transforms, collisions, animation timing, lighting, audio, input latency, save compatibility, frame time, memory use, loading behavior and platform packaging. Keep a defect log that identifies whether a mismatch comes from source data, import settings, engine defaults or intentionally changed behavior.
9. Cut over deliberately
Do not retire the Unity project when the destination editor merely displays the files. Require the vertical slice and then the full game to pass acceptance tests on each supported platform. Archive the final Unity source, build instructions, licenses and mapping documents. Document every intentional behavior change so that QA, support and future developers know where parity was not the goal.

Rebuilding gameplay systems without losing behavior
Input and controls
List actions rather than copying key codes: movement, camera, confirm, cancel, interaction, pause, accessibility toggles and device-specific alternatives. Implement those actions in the target engine’s input system, then test keyboard, controller, mouse, touch and remapping behavior where applicable. Measure input latency in an actual build, not only in the editor.
Physics and collisions
Document Unity layer masks, trigger rules, rigidbody settings, joints, gravity overrides, interpolation and continuous-collision choices. Recreate the intended interactions using the target engine’s collision channels and physics components. Test fast-moving objects, stacked bodies, slopes, moving platforms and deterministic gameplay paths; matching collider shapes alone does not establish equivalent results.
Animation and character movement
Export source clips with a known skeleton and frame rate. Rebuild state machines, blend spaces, transitions, animation events and root-motion ownership. Check foot placement, timing-sensitive attacks, montage or one-shot playback, and what happens when gameplay interrupts an animation.
Recommended Free Tools
UI, saves and services
Recreate UI navigation, focus order, scaling, localization, font fallbacks and accessibility settings. Define a versioned save schema rather than serializing engine objects. Write a converter for existing player data if continued access is required. For online services, verify authentication, entitlements, leaderboards, matchmaking, telemetry and platform certification requirements independently; a placeholder call is not a migration.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Useful response |
|---|---|---|
| Everything imports at the wrong size or orientation. | Different units, up axis, handedness or transform baking. | Choose a project-wide convention, re-export a test mesh, and validate scale and forward direction before batch import. |
| Meshes appear but look flat or too dark. | Material graphs, color space, normals, tangents or lighting assumptions did not transfer. | Rebuild the material, verify texture color space and tangent generation, then test under a controlled light. |
| Characters move but animations slide or break. | Skeleton mapping, frame rate, root motion or retargeting differs. | Validate one idle, locomotion and attack clip; set root-motion ownership and retargeting rules before importing the rest. |
| Scripts or visual graphs are present as files but do nothing. | Unity APIs and serialized references have no destination-engine implementation. | Rewrite behavior in Godot scripts, Unreal Blueprints or C++, and reconnect references through the new scene or Actor model. |
| A package feature is missing. | The Unity package depends on engine internals or a native SDK. | Find a supported target-engine replacement, port the integration, or remove the dependency after a product decision. |
| The editor is fast but the build is not. | Import-time defaults hid memory, shader, loading or platform costs. | Profile packaged builds, measure frame time and memory on target hardware, and test install, startup, streaming and suspend/resume. |
| Save files cannot be opened after migration. | The old format serialized Unity object IDs or engine-specific types. | Keep a Unity-side reader or export tool, define a neutral schema and run conversion tests against real save samples. |
Acceptance criteria for declaring the migration complete
Define pass/fail checks before replacing the Unity build. A practical acceptance set includes:
- All vertical-slice and production scenes load without missing references.
- Representative meshes, skeletal assets, materials, textures, audio and videos match the approved visual and audio targets.
- Input, movement, collisions, camera, interaction, UI and animation follow the documented behavior.
- Save conversion works for new data and supported legacy saves, with clear handling for incompatible versions.
- Networking and external services work in packaged builds, including authentication and failure recovery where applicable.
- Frame time, memory, loading time and shader or asset streaming meet the product’s target budgets on supported hardware.
- Every supported platform produces an installable, launchable package with required signing and store configuration.
- Known differences are recorded as intentional changes, not left as unexplained defects.
How to decide between Godot and Unreal
Choose based on the systems you must rebuild, not on how quickly a sample asset appears in an editor.
| Decision factor | Godot implication | Unreal implication |
|---|---|---|
| Project organization | Reorganize GameObjects and prefabs into scene files and node trees. | Map scenes to levels and GameObjects to Actors and Components in the Content Browser workflow. |
| Code | Rewrite scripts against Godot’s APIs, lifecycle and signal model. | Rebuild with Blueprints or C++; Unity C# and Bolt cannot be imported directly. |
| Rendering and materials | Recreate shaders, materials and render settings using Godot’s pipeline. | Recreate materials, shaders, lighting and post-processing in Unreal’s pipeline. |
| Plugins and SDKs | Confirm a Godot plugin or plan a custom integration for every dependency. | Confirm an Unreal plugin or implement a replacement in Blueprint, C++ or native code. |
| Risk profile | Best suited to projects able to accept a visible scene-tree reorganization and API rewrite. | Best suited when its level, Actor, component and tooling model fits the project’s intended runtime and team expertise. |
A small, mostly data-driven game using standard assets is usually easier to port than a project tied to a proprietary render pipeline, extensive editor extensions, native plugins or multiplayer services. The deciding evidence is the vertical slice: whichever engine lets that slice meet behavior, performance and platform requirements with fewer unowned dependencies is the lower-risk destination.

- Rebuild behavior in dependency order, including saves and external services.
- Run scripted comparisons and packaged-build performance tests continuously.
- Cut over only after acceptance tests pass and intentional differences are documented.
Bottom line
Unity assets are portable source material, not a portable game. Godot migration centers on reorganizing GameObjects and components into scenes and nodes; Unreal migration centers on levels, Actors, Components and the Content Browser. In both cases, scripts, shaders, prefabs, import settings and integrations must be rebuilt. A frozen source project, a representative vertical slice and behavior-and-performance acceptance tests provide a safer path than bulk copying or searching for an automatic converter.
