Yes, a Palworld world created with PC Game Pass or the Microsoft Store can be moved to a dedicated server, but not by copying the visible save files directly. Game Pass stores the world in a Windows Gaming Services (WGS) container. You must extract and convert that container into Palworld’s normal save structure, copy the complete world folder to the server, and set DedicatedServerName to the folder’s exact name. Xbox console saves cannot be downloaded directly for this migration route.
What transfers—and what does not
A dedicated server runs the Palworld world independently of the game client. Once the migration succeeds, players can join without the original co-op host keeping the game open. Pocketpair describes this as hosting “without hosting the world from the game client.”

Moving the world does not automatically guarantee that every character will appear correctly. The map, bases, Palbox and guild data can load while the former co-op host’s character identity still needs repair. Treat world migration and player-identity repair as separate tasks.

Before you start: requirements and safety checks
Use a compatible server build
Install the official Palworld Dedicated Server through Steam or SteamCMD, then keep the server and the Game Pass client on compatible versions. A version mismatch can prevent a converted save from loading or cause the server to create a fresh world. Check the current Pocketpair platform matrix before inviting players: current guidance lists Steam, Xbox/Microsoft Store and Mac cross-play for dedicated servers, while PS5 cross-play is unavailable. An older Xbox-specific procedure had different Steam cross-play limitations, so do not rely on that older matrix for a current installation.
Have enough server capacity
Pocketpair’s current guidance recommends a 4-core CPU, 16 GB of memory and fast storage. UDP port 8211 is the default game port. Low-performance storage can corrupt saved data, so avoid running the world from a nearly full, failing or unusually slow disk.

- A Windows or Linux machine that can run the official dedicated server.
- Administrator access to the machine and permission to open the required UDP port.
- Enough free storage for the original save, extracted files, server copy and multiple backups.
- The same Palworld world version, or a deliberately tested upgrade path, on client and server.
- A way to stop the server completely before changing files.
Make three separate backups
Exit Palworld, stop any running dedicated server, and copy the complete source save to a location that will not be modified by the converter. Also copy any destination server save to a second location. Keep an additional untouched archive before attempting a player-file conversion. Never use the only copy as the input to an extractor, and never let players join while you are replacing files.
Step 1: Locate the PC Game Pass save
On Windows, the Xbox app/Game Pass version stores Palworld data under Windows Gaming Services. Open File Explorer and paste this path into the address bar:

You will see folders and opaque files rather than a ready-to-upload Level.sav and Players directory. Do not rename random blobs or copy the WGS directory straight into the server’s save path; the dedicated server cannot use that layout.
If the folder is missing, first launch the Game Pass version, load the intended world, exit normally, and confirm that Windows has synchronized the save. Make sure you are checking the same Windows account that created the world. Do not delete the package directory while troubleshooting synchronization.

Step 2: Convert WGS files to a Palworld world folder
Use a current, compatible converter such as XGP Save Extractor or PalworldSaveTools, following the tool’s own release instructions. Tool interfaces and supported game versions change, so select the input WGS directory and verify that the program reports a successful export rather than assuming that an output folder is complete.
What a successful conversion contains
The output should be a single world folder with the normal Palworld files, including:
Level.savLevelMeta.sav- A
Playersdirectory containing player data LocalData.sav, when the converter exports it
Retain LocalData.sav. It can contain player or map state needed by the converted world. Preserve the entire folder hierarchy, not only the two Level files. If the converter produces several candidate folders, inspect each for the files above and use the one generated from the world you actually intend to host.
Check the output before uploading
- Open the converted folder and confirm that
Level.savandLevelMeta.savare directly inside it, not buried in another nested folder. - Open
Playersand confirm that it contains player files. - Record the folder name exactly, including capitalization, spaces and punctuation. This name becomes the server’s
DedicatedServerNamevalue. - Keep the untouched WGS backup and the converted output backup in separate locations.
Step 3: Install and initialize the dedicated server
Install through Steam or SteamCMD
Install the official Palworld Dedicated Server through Steam or SteamCMD. Start it once before copying the migrated world. The first launch creates the expected directory tree and configuration files; stop it cleanly after those files appear.
On a Windows installation, the world directory will be:
PalSavedSaveGames On Linux, the same Palworld-relative path is used inside the server installation. Configuration is platform-specific: Windows uses PalSavedConfigWindowsServerPalWorldSettings.ini, while Linux uses the corresponding LinuxServer directory. The generated GameUserSettings.ini is also under the server’s platform-specific configuration tree.

Decide whether self-hosting or managed hosting fits

Whichever route you choose, obtain file access before paying or uploading anything. A host that cannot let you replace the complete world folder or restore a backup is a poor fit for this migration.
Step 4: Copy the converted world to the server
- Stop the dedicated server and confirm that its process has exited. A running process can write over the files you are replacing.
- Open the server’s
PalSavedSaveGamesdirectory. - If the server created a test world, move that destination folder to a backup location instead of deleting it immediately.
- Copy the complete converted world folder into
PalSavedSaveGames. The result should resemblePalSavedSaveGames YourExactWorldFolderLevel.sav. - Confirm that the
Playersdirectory and any exportedLocalData.savare inside that same world folder.
Do not copy only Level.sav, and do not add an extra nesting level such as 0WorldWorldLevel.sav. Either mistake can make the server act as if no save exists.

Set DedicatedServerName
Open the server’s GameUserSettings.ini and set DedicatedServerName to the exact name of the folder you copied into SaveGames . Matching is case-sensitive for practical purposes; preserve every character. For example, if the folder is named MyGamePassWorld, the setting must point to that name rather than a shortened description such as MyWorld.
DedicatedServerName=MyGamePassWorldUse the configuration file generated for the server rather than creating a second file with a similar name. Keep the normal settings in PalWorldSettings.ini under the platform-specific configuration directory. The exact setting syntax and available options can change between Palworld releases, so retain the format generated by your installed server.
Remove the old world-option file for this workflow
The migration procedure calls for removing WorldOption.sav from the destination when switching this converted co-op world to a dedicated server. Work from a backup: move the file aside instead of permanently deleting it until the migrated world has been validated.
Keep versions aligned
Update the client and server deliberately, not in the middle of a file transfer. If the server starts a new world after an update, stop it, restore the pre-update backup and verify that both builds support the same save format before trying again.

Step 6: Start the server and validate the migration
- Start the dedicated server with no players connected.
- Join from the intended Game Pass/Microsoft Store or Steam account, according to the server’s supported platform configuration.
- Open the map and verify recognizable landmarks, discovered areas and map fog state.
- Visit several bases and confirm structures, production lines, storage and defenses.
- Check the Palbox, captured Pals, inventory, equipment, technology progress and guild membership.
- Have every regular player join and confirm that each character has the expected level, items and location.
- Log out, stop the server cleanly, start it again and verify that the same world persists.
If a completely new world appears, stop immediately. Do not build, capture Pals or allow automatic saves to continue. Recheck the destination path, the exact folder name, the DedicatedServerName value, the presence of Level.sav at the correct depth, and the server/client versions. Restore the backup if the server has already written over the wrong location.
Repairing the former co-op host’s character
Co-op saves associate character files and local data with identities that do not always map cleanly to a dedicated server. This is why a world can load correctly while the original host appears as a new character, loses progress or cannot see the expected inventory.
Symptoms that indicate an identity problem
- The map, bases and Palbox are present, but the former host starts at character creation.
- A player’s level, inventory or technology is missing while the world itself is intact.
- The host’s character is absent from the player list, or two accounts appear to share unexpected progress.
Safe repair method
- Stop the server and make a fresh backup of the working migrated world.
- Have the affected account join once, then stop the server again. This creates a current dedicated-server player file that can be compared with the converted files.
- Use a current player-transfer or save-conversion workflow that explicitly supports the Palworld version you are running. Do not rename player files blindly.
- Map the old co-op identity to the correct dedicated-server identity, preserving the intended character data.
- Restore the backup and retry if the result is wrong. Test with one affected player before changing every account.
Player repair is inherently higher risk than copying the world. Keep the original converted folder untouched, and do not use an unverified tool on the only copy of a character file. If the world loads but one character is wrong, that is evidence to work on identity mapping—not a reason to reconvert the entire WGS container.

The server always creates a new world
- Confirm the migrated folder is directly under
PalSavedSaveGames. - Check that
Level.savandLevelMeta.savare inside that folder. - Make
DedicatedServerNameexactly match the folder name, including case. - Check that you edited the active server’s
GameUserSettings.ini, not a template or a different installation. - Verify that the server build can read the converted save and that
WorldOption.savwas moved aside for this migration.
The world loads but bases or Pals are missing
Stop the server and compare the uploaded folder with the converter’s output. A partial copy, an incomplete Players directory or a conversion from the wrong WGS container can produce a seemingly valid but incomplete world. Restore the untouched conversion and copy it again before allowing further saves.
The host or another player is reset
This is normally a player-identity mismatch. Preserve the working world, create a backup after the affected account joins, and perform a version-compatible player-transfer repair rather than deleting the character file.
Players cannot connect
Check that the server is running, the configured UDP port is reachable, the firewall allows it, and the client’s platform is supported by the current server build. Xbox/Microsoft Store, Steam and Mac support can change with server versions; PS5 cross-play is not available in Pocketpair’s current guidance.

The save becomes corrupted after migration
Stop using the affected copy. Restore the last known-good backup and examine storage performance, free space and unexpected shutdowns. Pocketpair warns that low-performance storage can corrupt saved data. Resume only after the server is writing to reliable, fast storage and clean shutdowns are possible.
