You can switch a 24/7 podcast stream from OBS to FFmpeg without creating a new YouTube broadcast: keep the existing broadcast in place, use its existing YouTube ingestion settings, and verify the public watch page during a controlled handoff. The important qualification is that YouTube’s documentation does not guarantee that the exact watch-page URL survives every disconnect, restart, key reset, or broadcast recreation. Check the specific broadcast and URL in Live Control Room rather than assuming they will persist.
What must stay the same to keep the YouTube URL?
YouTube’s ingestion settings and the public live broadcast are related, but they are not the same thing. The encoder sends video and audio to YouTube using an ingestion address and stream key. The broadcast is the viewer-facing live event and watch page.
Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation models these separately as a liveStream resource for encoder delivery settings and a liveBroadcast resource for the event viewers watch. It says a stream can be reused for broadcasts at different times, and gives a 24/7 feed example in which a separate interview broadcast is associated with the continuing feed. To preserve the intended watch page, keep the existing broadcast in place and connect FFmpeg using the ingestion settings associated with it; do not create a replacement broadcast simply to change encoders.

YouTube Help’s “Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder” explains how to use the server URL and stream key, but neither it nor the API documentation promises that the exact public URL remains valid through arbitrary encoder restarts, stream-key resets, or broadcast recreation.

Before you disconnect OBS
Identify the active broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Select the active stream or scheduled broadcast whose watch page you want to preserve.
- Record the public watch-page URL and confirm the broadcast’s title and privacy setting. Keep the broadcast itself; do not create another one for the migration.
- Record the encoder’s server or ingestion URL and stream key securely. A stream key is a credential: do not paste it into a public post, support forum, shared screenshot, or article. YouTube may load earlier settings when you return to the Stream tab, but verify that the values shown belong to the intended stream.
Make a settings checklist from the working OBS output
Write down the behavior FFmpeg needs to match. YouTube’s LiveStreams API health diagnostics identify codec support, GOP or keyframe frequency, bitrate, audio sample rate and channel configuration, ingestion configuration, and video starvation as issues that can affect stream health.
- Content source and whether it is continuous, a file loop, or a playlist.
- Video and audio codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval or GOP, audio sample rate, and channel layout.
- Ingestion protocol and the existing primary address. If the stream has a backup address, note its configuration too.
- How FFmpeg will be monitored and restarted if it exits.
- Whether the existing broadcast remains active during the handoff.
Do not assume that a successful connection alone proves the stream is healthy. A feed can connect while still having a codec, keyframe, bitrate, audio, or starvation problem.

Prepare FFmpeg to use the existing YouTube stream
Use the same source and output behavior
Configure FFmpeg to send the same podcast content and equivalent output settings as OBS. If the existing source is a looping file, for example, a basic RTMP-style command shape is:

It assumes the source already has video and audio streams that YouTube accepts and whose timing and format suit the existing broadcast. The copy options do not convert or repair incompatible streams. If the source is a playlist, another input type, or requires encoding, use the appropriate FFmpeg input and encoding options while matching the working OBS output. The values for bitrate, resolution, frame rate, GOP, and audio format should come from the setup you are replacing and the health requirements for your stream; there is no single value in YouTube’s cited documentation that fits every channel.

Keep the real server address and key out of scripts that others can read. The command above uses an environment variable so the destination need not be written directly into a shared command example. In your actual configuration, follow the output format FFmpeg accepts: YouTube’s API documentation notes that an encoder may need the stream URL and stream name separately or joined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Do not append the key twice if the supplied address already includes it.
Choose the ingestion protocol deliberately
YouTube’s API documentation lists RTMP, including RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingestion options. A move from OBS to FFmpeg does not itself require changing protocol. If you already use RTMP or RTMPS, keep the existing protocol unless you have a specific reason and have configured FFmpeg for the alternative. YouTube’s separate HLS setup guidance describes segment requirements and higher latency than RTMP, so HLS is not a drop-in change merely because the encoder is changing.

Switch encoders without replacing the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, make sure you are working with the intended active broadcast and have its ingestion details available. Leave the public broadcast in place.
- Start FFmpeg against the existing ingestion settings while OBS is still available as a rollback option. Avoid having both encoders send to the same stream at once; disconnect or stop OBS when FFmpeg is ready to take over.
- Watch the Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream-health indicators. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder setup workflow separately instructs the operator to click Go live after the preview is ready. Follow the control shown for your broadcast rather than assuming that an encoder connection alone makes a scheduled event public.
- From a separate viewer session, open the previously recorded public URL. Confirm that it plays the expected podcast, with audio and video, and that the title and privacy are correct.
- Keep OBS available until the preview, health status, public URL, and playback checks pass. If the URL or broadcast does not behave as intended, use the rollback path and inspect the broadcast in Live Control Room before creating or scheduling anything new.
What to expect from a 24/7 feed and its archive
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That documented limit matters for a nominally continuous channel: do not promise one uninterrupted archive for a 24/7 feed. Check how the existing broadcast is configured and how the channel’s live sessions are represented. Google’s API example distinguishes a continuing 24/7 feed from a separate broadcast, but it does not establish a universal watch-page URL guarantee for every encoder restart.
Troubleshoot common migration problems
