Measure your body, then match those numbers to the size chart for the exact loungewear item. For most two-piece sets, record bust or chest, natural waist, and fullest hip measurements. Add inseam when you are buying full-length pants. Keep the tape level and comfortably loose, then choose the size that fits the garment’s stated cut, length, fabric, and your preferred room to move—not simply the letter or number you normally wear.
What you need before measuring
Use a flexible fabric tape measure, a mirror, a place where you can stand naturally, and something to record the numbers. A fabric tape follows body curves more accurately than a rigid ruler. If you do not have one, you can wrap a piece of string around the body point, mark where it meets, and measure the string against a ruler; a flexible tape is less likely to introduce a gap or twist.
- Wear little or no clothing over the area being measured. Ralph Lauren’s sizing guidance specifically recommends a fabric tape and little or no clothing.
- Stand upright without sucking in your stomach, lifting your chest, or shifting your weight.
- Keep the tape parallel to the floor for circumferences.
- Hold the tape against the body without pulling it tight. It should rest comfortably and not dig into the skin.
- Write down the unit shown by the retailer’s chart, usually inches or centimetres. Do not round until you have recorded the actual reading.
Ask another person to read the tape or check the mirror if possible. A tape that slopes up at the back can change a result enough to move you into a different chart range.
Which measurements loungewear usually requires
| Measurement | Where to measure | When it matters most |
|---|---|---|
| Bust or chest | Around the fullest part of the bust or chest, following the item guide’s instructions | Nearly all tops, robes, jumpsuits, and two-piece sets |
| Natural or true waist | Around the narrowest part of the torso or the point defined by that retailer’s guide | Waistbands, joggers, pajama pants, shorts, and fitted tops |
| Fullest hip | Around the fullest part of the hips and bottom | Pants, shorts, skirts, robes, and one-piece styles |
| Inseam | From the crotch to the desired hem, using the product’s definition | Full-length pajama pants and any style with a stated inseam or length option |
Some charts ask for additional points, such as shoulder width or sleeve length. If the product page lists another measurement, follow that page rather than substituting a general apparel formula.

How to take each measurement
Bust or chest
- Relax your arms at your sides unless the retailer’s instructions say otherwise.
- Wrap the tape around the fullest part of the bust or chest. The correct point can vary slightly between guides, so use the exact wording on the product page.
- Check the mirror to make sure the tape is level across your back and is not compressing the fullest area.
- Record the number where the tape meets without adding extra room yourself.
Do not measure over a thick sweatshirt and then use that result as a body measurement. Bulky clothing can add enough circumference to mislead the chart comparison.
Natural waist
- Find the natural or true waist. Paper Label describes it as the narrowest part of the torso; another retailer may define the point differently.
- Wrap the tape horizontally around that point while breathing normally.
- Keep the tape comfortably loose. You should be able to slide a fingertip under it without forcing the tape away from the body.
The natural waist is not automatically the same as the point where you prefer a pajama waistband to sit. If a product has a high, mid, or low rise and gives a separate garment measurement, use that information to judge comfort after you have recorded your natural waist.
Fullest hips
- Stand with your feet positioned as the retailer directs; some guides specify heels together.
- Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips and bottom.
- Keep the tape parallel to the floor and avoid pulling it into the body.
- Record the largest reading if the tape crosses a fuller point at the front or back.
For pants and shorts, hip circumference can determine the size even when the waist measurement appears to fit. A waistband can be adjusted with elastic or a drawstring; fabric cannot easily compensate for insufficient room through the hips.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteInseam for full-length pants
Inseam is the inside-leg length from the crotch to the hem. Natori’s sleepwear guidance recommends measuring from the crotch to the desired hem for full-length pajamas. You can measure your body or a pair of pants that already reaches the way you want:
- Stand naturally with your legs slightly apart.
- Place the tape at the crotch point where the inside seams would meet.
- Run it down the inside of the leg to the ankle or the intended pajama hem.
- Keep the tape straight rather than following the curve of the leg.
If you measure an existing garment, lay it flat without stretching it and measure the inside seam from crotch seam to hem. Treat that result as a garment reference, not a body measurement, because the fabric may already include ease or may have changed after washing.
How to read an online size chart correctly
Open the chart attached to the specific product page, not only the retailer’s general size guide. Ralph Lauren notes that sizes vary between brands and directs shoppers to the individual product-page chart for the most specific information. A letter size such as M or a number such as huit is not a universal conversion.

Check whether the numbers are body or garment measurements
A body chart gives the circumference a person is expected to have. A garment chart gives the finished item’s dimensions. They are not interchangeable. A garment must usually be larger than the body at points where movement is expected, but the amount of extra room depends on the cut and fabric. If the page does not clearly identify the type, contact the retailer before ordering rather than treating the values as equivalent.

Check whether the table uses inches or centimetres and whether it is for women’s, men’s, unisex, or another category. Paper Label publishes separate women’s, men’s, and unisex charts, so selecting the wrong category can produce a seemingly contradictory result. Also look for petite, regular, or tall length options and any separate chart for a particular collection.
Use the measurement that controls the fit
For a top, bust or chest may be the limiting measurement. For pants, compare waist, hip, and inseam together. For a robe or relaxed set, the chart’s largest relevant range and the product’s fit description may matter more than a close match at one point. Do not average the measurements or choose a size because two points fit while a third is outside the stated range.
What to do when your measurements fall between sizes
There is no universal rule for converting an in-between measurement into a size. Decide using the item’s intended fit, the measurement that needs the most room, and how you plan to wear it.
Choose more room when movement is the priority
For sleep and lounging, extra room can make bending, sitting, and turning more comfortable. A relaxed cut, fluid fabric, or drawstring waist may accommodate a range more easily than a fitted style. If your hip or chest measurement is in the larger range while your waist is in the smaller range, inspect the garment construction before choosing: a drawstring may let you adjust the waist, whereas a narrow hip may make the smaller size impractical.
Choose the closer size for a tailored appearance
Natori’s Sleep & Loungewear Size Guide states that sleepwear should feel comfortable and allow for easy movement. Its answer to an in-between-size question says, “For a looser fit, size up. For a more tailored look, choose the smaller size.” That is Natori’s guidance for its own shopping context, not a rule that applies to every brand or fabric. Confirm that the smaller option still covers your largest relevant body measurement and does not restrict movement.

Account for length separately
Sizing up can add width without solving a sleeve or inseam problem. If the product offers petite, regular, or tall lengths, select the length that matches your measured inseam or the stated hem preference first, then resolve width. If no length option exists, read the garment’s listed inseam or model information and decide whether a slightly short or long hem is acceptable.
Fabric, waistband, and construction change the decision
Measurements tell you where your body falls on a chart; construction tells you how that size will feel.
- Stretch: A knit may adapt more readily than a woven fabric, but the sources do not establish a universal stretch allowance. Use the retailer’s fabric description and fit notes instead of inventing a percentage.
- Waistband: Elastic can flex as you sit or sleep. A drawstring can fine-tune the waist, but it cannot create more room through the hips or seat.
- Rise: A high-rise pant may sit at the natural waist; a lower-rise style may sit below it. Compare the product description with where you took your waist measurement.
- Cut: Fitted, tailored, relaxed, and loose describe different amounts of intended ease. A size that works in a relaxed set may feel restrictive in a fitted camisole.
- Length: Cuffed ankles, cropped legs, and full-length hems should be compared with the product’s stated measurements, not inferred from the size letter.
Examples of how retailer charts differ
The following figures illustrate why a chart must be treated as retailer-specific. They are entries from the named charts, not population averages or a universal conversion.

|---|---|---|
| Natori Sleep & Loungewear, women’s 3X | Bust 52–54 inches; waist 45.5–47.5 inches; hip 54.5–56.5 inches | Extended sizes may be listed with separate body-measurement ranges. These values apply to Natori’s chart reviewed in 2026. |
| Paper Label women’s XS | Bust 33–34 inches; waist 25–26 inches; hip 35–36 inches | A different retailer can use different ranges and a different size-category structure. |
| Brooks Running US women’s apparel guide | Distinguishes fitted, semi-fitted, and relaxed cuts and lists regular, petite, and tall inseam figures | Length and intended fit can be separate decisions. This is a general apparel illustration, not a loungewear recommendation. |
Do not use one retailer’s 3X or XS values to predict another retailer’s equivalent. Re-measure if your body changes or if you are ordering a different brand.
A practical comparison method for two sizes or two products
When two choices appear plausible, compare them in this order:
- Largest body measurement: Identify whether bust or chest, waist, or hip is closest to or beyond the chart boundary.
- Length: Compare inseam, sleeve length, and any petite, regular, or tall option.
- Intended fit: Read whether the item is fitted, tailored, relaxed, or loose.
- Fabric and construction: Note woven versus knit fabric, the stated stretch, and elastic or drawstring details.
- Use: Decide whether you need room for sleeping, sitting, layering, or movement, or prefer a closer appearance.
- Care: Read the care label before buying. Some materials may shrink slightly, but the amount depends on the material and care method.
If the larger size solves a circumference issue but creates excessive length, look for a different length option or another cut rather than assuming washing will shorten it predictably.

Special cases shoppers often miss
Two-piece sets with different top and bottom needs
Some sets are sold only as a matched size, even when your bust and hip measurements fall in different chart ranges. Check whether the retailer sells separates. If it does not, prioritize the measurement that would make the garment restrictive—often the hip for pants or the bust for a top—and verify the return policy before ordering.

Unisex labels may use a different block, shoulder shape, or length than a women’s chart. Use the chart attached to that category and compare the stated garment fit. Do not convert by simply moving up or down one letter unless the retailer provides that conversion.
Petite and tall shoppers
A width size can be correct while the rise or inseam is wrong. If the page provides petite, regular, and tall measurements, compare your inseam with those figures. If it provides only one length, use the listed garment measurement and decide whether the hem position suits your preference.
Robes and loose layers
Robes are often designed to overlap and allow a range of movement. Check the product’s closure, belt placement, and sleeve length. A larger circumference may not be necessary if the robe is intentionally open, while a narrow sleeve can still limit comfort even in a roomy body.
Five-minute checkout checklist
- Have you measured bust or chest, natural waist, and fullest hip?
- Did you add inseam for full-length pants?
- Are your measurements in the same units as the product chart?
- Does the chart show body measurements or finished garment measurements?
- Are you looking at the chart for this exact item and category?
- Which measurement is closest to the size boundary?
- Does the fit description match the amount of room you want?
- Will the waistband, fabric, rise, and length work for how you will sleep or lounge?
- Have you checked care instructions for possible material-related shrinkage?
- Have you confirmed the retailer’s exchange or return terms in case the fit differs from the chart?
After the order arrives
Try the garment on over the type of underlayer you expect to wear, before washing it. Walk, sit, bend, and raise your arms. For pants, check that the waistband stays comfortable when seated and that the crotch and hips do not pull. For tops, check movement across the chest and shoulders. Compare the hem with the intended ankle or wrist position.
If the item feels tight, identify where: a waistband problem may be solved by a different rise or drawstring, while insufficient hip or chest room usually calls for a different size or cut. If it feels loose only at the waist but fits elsewhere, an adjustable closure may help. Do not wash first if the retailer’s policy requires unworn, unwashed returns.

Common measurement mistakes and fixes
The tape is too tight
A compressed tape produces measurements that are smaller than your body. Retake the measurement with enough slack to slide a fingertip underneath while keeping the tape level.
The tape is tilted
A diagonal tape can add or remove circumference. Use a mirror or ask someone to check the back and sides. Take the reading only when the tape is parallel to the floor.
You measured the wrong waist point
If you measured where a particular pair of pants sits rather than the natural or true waist defined by the chart, repeat the measurement at the chart’s stated point. Then use the product’s rise and garment information to judge how it will sit.
You used an old measurement
Body measurements can change with time, clothing, posture, or a different measuring method. Retake them when ordering a new style, especially if the previous item fit unusually well or poorly.
You treated a usual size as a guarantee
A familiar size is only a starting clue. Brand blocks, fabric, intended fit, and category charts differ, so let the current product’s measurements control the choice.
Care after you find the right size
Follow the garment’s care label exactly. Natori notes that some materials may shrink slightly and advises following the care instructions. Because shrinkage varies by material and washing or drying method, there is no reliable universal percentage to subtract from your measurements. If the item is close to the minimum comfortable fit before washing, do not assume care will improve the fit.
The decision in one sentence
Measure bust or chest, natural waist, fullest hips, and—when needed—inseam with a level, comfortably loose fabric tape; then use the exact product chart, fit description, construction, length, and your need for movement to choose the size.
