Measure two things before you order: the place where the product will operate and the complete route from delivery point to that place. Record the narrowest width, lowest height and shallowest usable depth, then compare those numbers with the exact model’s specification and installation guide. Include doors, hinges, handles, trim, ventilation, connection lines and the product’s operating clearances—not just the carton or headline size.
A tape measure and a written measurement sheet prevent the most expensive surprises. A television that fits its stand may still block a cabinet, and a refrigerator that fits the alcove may not make it through the hallway.
What to measure before choosing a model
Create one measurement sheet for the room and one for the delivery route. Use the same units throughout (inches or millimetres) and write down exactly where each number was taken.

- Width: Measure the opening at the floor, at the middle and near the top. Use the smallest result. Check between baseboards, cabinet edges, counters, islands and other fixed obstacles.
- Height: Measure from the finished floor or support surface to the lowest obstruction, such as a shelf, cabinet, ceiling bulkhead or trim.
- Depth: Measure from the rear wall to the closest front obstruction. Check at several heights because counters, skirting boards and wall irregularities can make the usable depth smaller in one spot.
- Side and top space: Note room for doors, hinges, drawers, handles, ventilation and cleaning access. An opening’s nominal dimensions are not the same as its usable dimensions.
- Support and access: For a TV, measure the furniture’s load-bearing surface and its footprint. For an appliance, check floor level, strength and the ability to pull the unit out for servicing.
Route measurements
Measure from the vehicle drop-off or building entrance to the final position. Include every gate, exterior door, lobby, hallway, turn, stair, lift, threshold and final approach. At each point, record the narrowest clear width and lowest clear height with doors, knobs, latches, handrails and shelves in their normal positions. A diagonal measurement can help at a corner, but delivery crews generally need a clear opening they can physically maneuver through.

Build a reliable measurement sheet
Use a retractable tape measure, pencil and paper or a notes app. Whirlpool’s laundry measuring guidance also lists a tape measure as a basic item. Label each measurement with its location and condition, for example “hallway, skirting to skirting, 33.5 in” or “front door open 90 degrees, clear width 31 in.” Photograph awkward corners so you remember which trim or hinge caused the restriction.
Add a column for the selected product. Copy the model number, region and installation configuration exactly as shown on the manufacturer’s specification page and installation instructions. Keep separate rows for cabinet dimensions, door-open dimensions, stand dimensions, wall-mount dimensions and cutout dimensions; these are different measurements.
| Measurement-sheet row | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Final opening width | Smallest clear width and where it was taken | Determines whether the body can sit in the space |
| Final opening height | Floor or support surface to lowest obstruction | Controls upright placement and tipping clearance |
| Usable depth | Wall to nearest obstruction, including trim | Reveals whether the product will protrude or block traffic |
| Operating clearance | Manufacturer’s side, rear, top and front allowances | Allows ventilation, opening and service access |
| Route bottleneck | Narrowest doorway, turn, stair or lift | Controls delivery feasibility before installation |
| Configuration | Freestanding, built-in, stacked, stand-mounted or wall-mounted | Changes dimensions and clearance requirements |
Measure the installation opening correctly
Width at the narrowest points
Do not rely on the width listed by a builder or a previous appliance. Measure between the surfaces that will actually limit the product. Baseboards can reduce a doorway or alcove by more than their visible thickness, and a counter overhang can narrow the upper part of an opening. If the product has protruding hinges or a rounded cabinet, measure the corresponding shape rather than assuming a rectangular box.

The cutout may be wider than the visible opening, or it may require additional brackets and ventilation channels. Use the installation drawing for the exact model.
Height from the finished surface
Measure from the surface that will carry the product, not from unfinished subflooring. Include a plinth, platform, anti-vibration feet or leveling legs if they are part of the installation. Check the highest point of the product and any top-mounted hinge or control panel. A refrigerator may fit before its leveling feet are adjusted but fail after it is raised to align with cabinets.

Depth that leaves the room usable
Measure to the nearest wall, counter edge, island or walkway. Compare that depth with both the product cabinet and the installed depth in the manufacturer’s drawings. Cables, water lines, gas connectors, hoses and rear vents occupy space behind the cabinet. A unit that technically fits can still project far enough to obstruct a doorway or prevent another door from opening.
Match your measurements to the exact product specifications
Category labels such as “standard refrigerator” or “55-inch TV” are not fit specifications. Manufacturers publish model-specific values, and regional versions can differ. Check the exact model code, market and installation configuration immediately before ordering.
Dimensions that are commonly confused
- Cabinet or body dimensions: The fixed housing, often excluding handles, doors or controls.
- Overall dimensions: The largest external measurements, which may include hinges, handles or feet.
- Door-open or drawer-open depth: The clearance needed to use the product, not merely to place it.
- Stand footprint and height: Relevant to a TV on furniture; these can differ substantially from screen dimensions.
- Wall-mount dimensions: Bracket-hole spacing, bracket depth and cable clearance for a mounted TV.
- Cutout dimensions: The opening required for a built-in appliance, including any specified ventilation gap.
When a specification says a dimension is approximate, treat it as a planning value and verify the installation document before purchase. Never substitute a carton dimension for the installed product dimension unless the retailer explicitly identifies it as such.
Allow operating, connection and cleaning clearances
Clearance is product- and installation-specific. Hoses, vents, power cords, gas connections, water lines, hinges and doors can change the usable width or depth. Manufacturers may specify different allowances for freestanding, built-in, stacked and enclosed installations. There is no single clearance number that safely applies to every TV, refrigerator, washer or dryer.
Ventilation
Locate every ventilation requirement in the installation guide. Blocking a rear, side or top vent can cause overheating, poor drying performance or a warranty issue. For an enclosed cabinet, check whether the guide requires a grille, open rear panel or minimum air channel.

Connections and service access
Plan the path of each hose, drain, power lead, gas line or water line. A connection that exits directly behind the product may require more depth than one routed through a side channel. Leave enough room to shut off water or gas and to disconnect the unit for service. Do not compress a hose against a sharp edge or place a plug where it cannot be reached safely.

Doors, drawers and cleaning
Open every door, drawer and lid to its required angle. Check the swing against a wall, island and adjacent appliance. Refrigerators may need hinge-side space to remove shelves or reverse a door. Leave a practical gap for wiping behind and beside the unit; a product that cannot be pulled out cannot be cleaned or repaired safely.
Measure the delivery route before ordering
- Start at the delivery location. Measure the gate, driveway access, building entrance or loading area where the product will be unloaded.
- Check every door. Record clear width with the door fully open, including the frame, hinges, closer, knob and threshold. Ask whether the door can be removed and who is responsible for that work.
- Follow each hallway and turn. Measure the straight section and the inside and outside of each corner. Note radiators, shelves, handrails, pictures, light fixtures and islands that cannot be moved.
- Measure stairs and lifts. Check stair width, ceiling height over landings, lift-door width and lift interior depth. Confirm the building’s weight and booking rules.
- Check the final approach. Measure from the last turn to the installation opening. A product may clear the doorway but lack the turning room needed to stand upright.
- Compare with delivery dimensions. Ask the retailer for the packaged dimensions, unpackaged delivery dimensions and any route restrictions. Clarify whether the crew will remove packaging, doors or railings.
For a tight route, temporarily mark the product’s width and depth on cardboard or painter’s tape and practice the turns. This will not replace the manufacturer’s delivery guidance, but it can reveal an immovable corner before delivery day.
TV-specific measurements
Screen size is diagonal, not width
A TV’s advertised size is the diagonal measurement from one corner of the visible screen to the opposite corner. It does not tell you the physical width, height or bezel size. For a 16:9 screen, the panel width is roughly 87.2% of the diagonal and the panel height roughly 49.0%, but the actual model dimensions, bezel and chassis control the fit. Use the manufacturer’s table for the exact model.
TV on a stand or cabinet
- Measure the stand’s usable width, not just the furniture’s total width. Some stands use two feet near the edges; others use a central pedestal.
- Check stand depth and the position of the feet. A stand can overhang a shallow cabinet even when the screen itself fits.
- Measure total height with the stand installed and check the view over soundbars or a media console.
- Confirm the cabinet’s load rating and stability. A narrow or uneven surface increases tip risk.
- Leave room for power, HDMI and antenna cables without sharply bending them.
Wall-mounted TV
Measure the wall area and the furniture below it. Confirm the model’s bracket-hole spacing (VESA pattern), screw requirements and the mount’s rated load. The wall must support the combined TV-and-mount weight; drywall anchors alone may not be sufficient. Check cable routing, outlet position and the mount’s extension depth. A full-motion mount needs extra side and rear clearance when the TV is swung or tilted.

Viewing distance is a comfort decision, not a substitute for fit. Choose a position that keeps the screen at a comfortable eye level and leaves space for speakers, a console and ventilation. Samsung’s TV guidance distinguishes diagonal size from physical dimensions and viewing distance; verify the current model’s own table before buying.
Example: Sony X85K 55X85K
Sony’s X85K dimension table illustrates why one “TV size” number is insufficient. For the named 55X85K model, the listed approximate values are 1,233 mm screen width, 711 mm screen height, 1,061 mm stand width, 783 mm total height with stand, 81 mm screen depth and 339 mm stand depth. The table also provides mounting-hole spacing. These figures apply to that model and region; check the current regional support page for the exact model you intend to purchase.
Refrigerator-specific measurements
Measure the refrigerator cavity, but also measure the doors and the space needed to open them. LG’s refrigerator measuring guidance emphasizes the location, narrow points, door opening, hinge-side space, ventilation and cleaning access.
- Measure width at the top, middle and bottom of the cavity.
- Check whether the hinge side needs a wider gap for a 90-degree opening or shelf removal.
- Measure depth with the doors closed and compare it with the manufacturer’s door-open depth.
- Plan water-line and power access without crushing the line behind the cabinet.
- Check the route for the refrigerator body and for the packaged unit; the carton can be wider or taller than the bare appliance.
- Verify that the floor, threshold and final position can support the loaded appliance.
Washer and dryer measurements
For laundry appliances, compare the exact pair and installation type: side-by-side, stacked, pedestal-mounted or built-in. Door swing, venting and hoses often determine the real clearance.

Model-specific example
LG’s “Measure First” laundry guide gives a minimum area of 60 inches wide × 40.8 inches high × 37.3 inches deep for the particular washer-and-dryer pair covered. The guide lists the machines at 29 inches wide, 40.8 inches high and 32.3 inches deep, with 57 inches of depth when the door is open. It also says to allow 5 inches for hoses and venting. These are examples tied to those specified units and must not be generalized to every washer or dryer.

Compare two or more candidate models
Once a model passes the basic fit test, compare candidates on installed dimensions and usability rather than headline capacity or screen size.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Overall size | Which model has the smallest width, height and installed depth at the required configuration? |
| Opening footprint | Will doors, drawers, hinges or TV feet hit a wall, cabinet or adjacent item? |
| Ventilation and connections | Which model leaves the required air space and provides reachable hose, water, gas and power connections? |
| Delivery access | Which packaged and unpackaged dimensions clear the tightest route? |
| Configuration | Are you comparing like with like: freestanding versus built-in, stacked versus side-by-side, stand versus wall mount? |
| Household use | Does the model provide the capacity, viewing position or storage you need after it physically fits? |
Physical fit comes first. A larger-capacity appliance or larger screen is not an upgrade if it cannot be delivered, ventilated, opened or serviced in the intended location.
Common failure scenarios and fixes
“The width fits, but the door will not open”
Recheck hinge-side and handle clearance, then compare the manufacturer’s open-door dimension. A reversible door or a different hinge configuration may solve the problem only if the installation guide permits it.
“The appliance fits the alcove but sticks out too far”
Separate cabinet depth from installed depth. Add the required rear connections and ventilation, then decide whether the remaining walkway is safe. Do not push the unit tight against a wall to gain a few inches.
“The TV fits the cabinet but the feet do not”
Measure the stand footprint and foot spacing. Choose a compatible central stand or wall mount only after checking load rating, mounting pattern and manufacturer instructions.
“The product clears the front door but cannot turn”
Measure the diagonal and inside radius at the corner, remove only obstacles that the building and delivery provider permit, and ask whether the crew delivers the product unpackaged. If the route still fails, select a narrower model or a different configuration.
“The listed dimensions differ between pages”
Check model suffix, region, revision date and whether one value includes handles, doors, stands or packaging. Use the installation drawing as the deciding document and ask the retailer to confirm the exact stock keeping unit.
Questions to ask the retailer or delivery team
- What are the packaged and unpackaged width, height and depth?
- Will the crew remove packaging, doors, handles or stair railings, and is that service available in my area?
- What minimum route width and turning space does the delivery provider require?
- Are there building, lift, appointment or threshold restrictions?
- Which installation clearances, hoses, vents, brackets or stacking kits are required?
- What happens if the crew determines that the route is unsafe or the product cannot be installed?
Final pre-order checklist
- Exact model number and regional specification recorded.
- Opening width, height and depth measured at all narrow points.
- Door, drawer, hinge, handle and stand clearances checked.
- Ventilation, connection and cleaning allowances taken from the installation guide.
- Every delivery doorway, hallway, turn, stair, lift and final approach measured.
- Packaged and unpackaged delivery dimensions confirmed with the retailer.
- Installation configuration selected: freestanding, built-in, stacked, stand-mounted or wall-mounted.
- TV stand footprint or wall-mount pattern verified, if applicable.
- Measurement sheet, photos and model specifications saved for delivery day.
If any route or clearance number is uncertain, pause the order and obtain written confirmation from the retailer or manufacturer. Measuring again is cheaper than returning a product that cannot enter, operate or be serviced safely.
