Short answer: Use multi-angle stereo imagery to measure the height of identifiable smoke-plume features, then use observations acquired at different times to study change. NASA’s Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) views the same scene with nine cameras; the parallax between views is converted to geometric height. The MINX analysis tool adds plume-level height and motion retrievals. CALIOP lidar provides complementary vertical aerosol profiles, including information from optically thin layers.

A single MISR overpass can provide a height field and motion vectors, but it cannot show continuous growth throughout a day. To claim that a plume grew, first define growth (for example, a higher top, a thicker vertical layer, greater lateral extent, or downwind movement), then assemble suitably repeated observations while keeping that definition and the retrieval method consistent.

What “plume height” and “growth” actually mean

Satellite products do not all measure the same vertical quantity. A stereo retrieval usually reports the elevation of a visible, matchable plume feature. A lidar product describes aerosol backscatter through a vertical profile. A fire-atmosphere model may use an injection height, which is a parameter describing where emissions enter the atmosphere. These values can differ even when they refer to the same fire.

Before downloading data, write the metric you intend to report. For example, “median height of matched smoke features above ground,” “top of the optically detected aerosol layer,” and “model injection height” are three different statements. Do not substitute one for another in a chart or comparison.

Term What it describes Typical evidence in this workflow
Plume-feature height Elevation assigned to identifiable smoke structures that can be matched between views MISR multi-angle stereo processed with MINX
Aerosol-layer profile Vertical distribution of aerosol backscatter along a lidar track CALIOP lidar observations, including optically thin layers when detectable
Injection height A model or analysis quantity representing the level at which fire emissions enter the atmosphere Published MISR-derived analyses or atmospheric models
Plume growth A change over time, which must be defined as top height, vertical thickness, area, or displacement A time series of comparable observations

“Growth” is therefore not a single satellite variable. A rising top, a broader footprint, a deeper aerosol layer, and faster downwind displacement are separate phenomena. State which one you measured and over what time interval.

How MISR turns camera parallax into height

MISR flies on NASA’s Terra satellite and observes Earth with nine cameras pointed at different view angles. A smoke feature appears at slightly different image locations in each view. That displacement is parallax: knowing the camera positions, viewing angles, and Earth geometry lets the retrieval convert the displacement into an elevation.

NASA atmospheric scientist Ralph Kahn summarized the principle as follows: “By taking data at all of these angles, we are able to make use of parallax to estimate the height of plumes.” The method is geometric, not an inference from how bright or warm a smoke pixel looks.

MINX (MISR Interactive eXplorer) is used for detailed local retrievals. An analyst selects a smoke scene, identifies features that persist across the different camera views, and lets the software solve for their height. MINX can also derive plume-level motion vectors, allowing the same scene to show both where a feature is located vertically and how it is moving.

Matching is the limiting step. Only structures with enough contrast and a recognizable appearance across the views can be assigned a reliable parallax. A smoke mask or a thermal fire detection alone is not a height measurement. Clouds, overlapping layers, diffuse edges, and rapidly changing texture can prevent a valid match.

Step-by-step workflow for a defensible measurement

1. Locate the fire and a scene that contains visible smoke

Begin with a fire-detection or imagery product to establish the event, date, and approximate location. MODIS fire observations can provide fire context. They tell you where burning is detected; they do not, by themselves, provide plume height.

  1. Record the fire location, acquisition date, and time window.
  2. Look for a satellite scene in which the smoke plume is actually visible rather than assuming that a fire detection guarantees a usable plume.
  3. Note cloud cover, smoke contrast, and whether the plume appears to overlap other aerosol layers.

2. Confirm MISR coverage and product availability

Check NASA’s data interface for the relevant Terra orbit and MISR products before designing the analysis. A scene must cover the fire and contain enough visible plume structure for multi-angle matching. A missing overpass, heavy cloud, or weak contrast is a data-availability problem, not a processing error you can fix later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Retrieve height and motion with MINX

Use the MISR multi-angle views to select recognizable plume features. The retrieval converts their measured parallax to height using the instrument geometry. Review the quality of each match rather than accepting every automatically displayed point.

  1. Open the MISR scene and inspect all available camera views.
  2. Identify plume structures that retain a coherent shape between views.
  3. Run the local stereo retrieval in MINX.
  4. Save the resulting height field, feature locations, and any motion vectors together with scene time and processing information.
  5. Flag unmatched, cloud-contaminated, or ambiguous areas instead of filling them with a guessed height.

4. Examine height and motion as separate outputs

A height field tells you the elevation of the matched features at the observation time. Motion vectors describe the movement of those plume-level features. A high feature is not automatically a fast-moving feature, and a motion vector does not prove that the plume top is rising.

Keep the reference surface clear. Report whether heights are above ground, above sea level, or another datum supplied by the product. If the software output uses a defined convention, preserve that convention in your tables and figures.

5. Add CALIOP when you need vertical-profile context

CALIOP lidar supplies a different view of the atmosphere: a profile of aerosol backscatter along its track. It can detect optically thin smoke layers that may be difficult to match in stereo imagery. Use it to test whether aerosol exists above or below the MISR feature height, not to replace the stereo measurement without explaining the change in metric.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Collocation matters. The lidar track and MISR footprint must be close enough in space and time for a meaningful comparison, and the analyst must align definitions such as layer top, layer base, or feature centroid. A profile crossing the plume hours later is not a direct validation of the earlier stereo height.

6. Build a time series only from comparable observations

For growth analysis, collect observations at multiple times and hold the height definition constant. Use the same statistic (for example, plume-top percentile or median matched-feature height), the same vertical datum, and the same screening rules at every time step. Record gaps explicitly; do not interpolate a continuous curve through days with no suitable observation unless the interpolation method is part of a separate, documented model.

How to define and measure plume growth

Choose the change you want to detect before selecting a sensor. The following distinctions prevent a common error: treating any later, larger-looking smoke image as proof that the plume rose.

Growth question Measurement What must remain consistent
Did the plume top rise? Change in a defined top-height statistic Top definition, vertical datum, quality threshold, and observation geometry
Did the smoke layer thicken? Difference between layer top and base, or profile-integrated vertical extent Layer-detection algorithm and lidar/stereo metric
Did the plume spread laterally? Change in mapped plume area or width Pixel mask, threshold, map projection, and cloud screening
Did it move downwind? Displacement or motion-vector change Feature identity, wind-frame convention, and time interval
Did emissions enter the free troposphere? Injection-height estimate or aerosol found above a chosen level Explicit distinction between observed feature height and model injection height

MISR’s sampling makes an important distinction unavoidable: it can measure a sequence of snapshots, not uninterrupted evolution. Terra’s equator crossing is around 10:30 a.m. local time, and the cited MISR swath is about 380 km. A fire that changes rapidly between overpasses can have substantial unobserved growth. Describe the result as “height at the available overpass times” unless your observing system supplies more frequent coverage.

Choosing observations: stereo, lidar, and combined analyses

Criterion MISR with MINX CALIOP Combined use
Retrieval principle Geometric stereo from multi-angle images Lidar backscatter profile Compare geometry-derived features with profile-derived layers
Primary vertical quantity Height of identifiable plume features; motion vectors may also be available Vertical aerosol structure along a narrow track Requires aligned definitions and spatial-temporal collocation
Thin smoke sensitivity Depends on visible, matchable contrast Can detect optically thin layers when the lidar signal supports it Useful for finding layers that stereo does not match
Spatial sampling Broad swath with multi-angle image coverage; cited swath about 380 km Track-based profile sampling Coverage is complementary, not interchangeable
Motion information MINX can retrieve plume-level motion vectors Not the same stereo motion product Use motion from MISR and profile structure from CALIOP only after collocation
Time sampling Terra sun-synchronous overpasses, with an equator crossing around 10:30 a.m. local time Track revisits governed by the lidar orbit and sampling Neither alone guarantees continuous within-day growth monitoring

A 2024 multisource assessment emphasizes that products use different methods and collocation approaches. A numerical difference between MISR and CALIOP is not automatically an error in either product; it may reflect different features, times, footprints, or definitions.

Data access and what the MISR archive covers

NASA and JPL’s MISR Plume Height Project page directs users to the MISR Enhanced Research and Lookup Interface (MERLIN), hosted by NASA’s Atmospheric Science Data Center. The documented archive contains all digitizable MISR-observed smoke plumes globally for 2008–2011 and the summers (June, July, and August) of 2017 and 2018.

Those periods make the archive valuable for historical case studies and method development. They do not mean that every fire, year, or Terra overpass has a usable retrieval. “Digitizable” implies that the plume could be identified and analyzed in the available imagery; it is not a guarantee of a height value for every event.

A NASA technical record reports a global analysis of more than 23,000 MISR-derived wildfire smoke-plume injection heights. That is the size of a published research analysis, not a current MERLIN record count and not a promise that a new fire will have a retrieval.

Resolution, precision, and uncertainty

A 2007 paper describing the MISR standard stereo product reports a 1.1 km geolocated grid and height precision quantized to ±560 m. These figures characterize that described standard product. They are not a blanket accuracy guarantee for every MISR or MINX result, especially when smoke is diffuse, the feature match is weak, or the scene is cloud contaminated.

Separate three concepts in your report:

  • Grid spacing: the distance between geolocated output cells.
  • Quantization or reported precision: how the product represents height values, such as the cited ±560 m quantization.
  • Retrieval uncertainty: how scene geometry, matching quality, clouds, and plume structure affect the particular estimate.

Do not present grid spacing as an accuracy value. Do not add extra decimal places to a height that is quantized at a coarser interval. When comparing products, retain each product’s uncertainty description rather than forcing all observations onto one common error bar.

Common failure modes and how to recover

The fire is detected, but no plume height is available

A thermal hotspot confirms a fire location, not a matchable smoke structure. Check whether MISR actually viewed the event, whether clouds obscure the plume, and whether smoke contrast is sufficient across the nine angles. If not, report the missing retrieval rather than substituting the hotspot location or an image-based visual estimate.

Only part of the plume matches

Use the matched portion and label the coverage. Diffuse edges, overlapping layers, and changing texture often produce gaps. A height map should not imply that unmatched smoke has the same elevation as the nearest valid feature.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MISR and CALIOP heights disagree

First check time and location, then check the vertical definition. MISR may identify a discrete visible feature while CALIOP resolves an aerosol layer along another line. Compare collocated portions and state whether you are comparing a feature top, layer top, centroid, or another statistic.

A time series appears to show rapid growth

Check the intervals between observations and the local overpass times. MISR’s morning sampling and approximately 380 km swath leave large temporal and spatial gaps. A jump between two snapshots may reflect actual growth, changing plume visibility, a different matched feature, or advection between the scenes. Use only observations with consistent quality and metric definitions, and identify the unobserved intervals.

A model injection height is being treated as an observed plume top

Rename the columns and rewrite the comparison. Put the model parameter and the satellite retrieval in separate fields, explain their definitions, and compare them only with a stated collocation and validation method.

How to document a result so another analyst can reproduce it

  • Identify the fire, geographic region, acquisition date, and satellite overpass time.
  • Name the product and software path used, such as MISR multi-angle imagery analyzed with MINX.
  • Define the vertical metric and reference datum.
  • Describe feature-selection and quality-screening rules, including how clouds and unmatched smoke were handled.
  • Report the spatial grid or footprint and the uncertainty or quantization information supplied by the product.
  • For motion, state the vector convention, time interval, and feature-tracking method.
  • For CALIOP comparisons, give the spatial and temporal collocation window and the layer definition.
  • For growth, list every observation time, identify gaps, and explain whether growth means top height, thickness, area, or displacement.
  • Do not call a published global sample of more than 23,000 injection heights a current archive inventory.

A practical decision framework

Use MISR and MINX when your priority is a geometrically derived height and plume-level motion for a scene that contains identifiable smoke features. Add CALIOP when vertical profile information or sensitivity to thin layers is important and a suitable track is available. Use a different or additional observing system when the scientific question requires frequent within-day updates; MISR’s overpass schedule alone cannot supply that continuity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Regardless of the sensor, the defensible sequence is the same: define the quantity, verify that the scene contains usable data, retrieve only features supported by the method, collocate complementary observations, and describe temporal gaps. That discipline is more important than choosing a single “best” height number.
