Measure hollow-core fiber (HCF) against conventional single-mode fiber (SMF) with a controlled A/B test, not a single speed-test result. Use equal measured lengths, identical transceivers and switching, the same wavelength and launch power, and synchronized one-way timestamps—or carefully calibrated round-trip time (RTT). Report both the fiber-only propagation difference and the complete system delay, because transponders, forward-error correction (FEC), switching and synchronization can hide a real fiber advantage.

The physical expectation is set by t = L × ng / c. Here L is optical path length, ng is group index, and c is 299,792,458 m/s. HCF can reduce propagation delay because its guided mode travels mostly through air, but the saving depends on the actual cable, wavelength, modal behavior, temperature and route length.

Decide which latency you are measuring

Before connecting instruments, define the boundary of the measurement. A fiber-only result answers how much propagation time the cable contributes. An end-to-end result includes every device between the timestamp points.

  • Fiber-only one-way delay: propagation through the HCF or SMF, including the optical path between the chosen reference planes.
  • Fiber-only RTT: the forward and return propagation delay after fixed instrument and patch-cord offsets are removed.
  • End-to-end one-way delay: transceiver serialization, electronics, FEC, switching, connectors, amplifiers and the fiber.
  • End-to-end RTT: all of the above in both directions, plus the behavior of the test endpoints.

Keep these categories in separate columns in your results. A 30% reduction in propagation time does not mean a 30% reduction in application ping time when a transponder or FEC block dominates the path.

Calculate the expected fiber delay first

Group velocity is vg = c/ng, so the expected propagation delay is:

t = L × ng / c

Use the measured optical length, not the route distance on a map. Include the extra length in slack loops, patch panels and splice trays. Photonica’s 2026 worked example uses 100 km, an SMF group index of 1.4682 and an HCF group index of 1.0003.

Medium Group index used Optical length Calculated one-way propagation Ideal fiber-only RTT
HCF 1.0003 100 km 333.7 µs 667.4 µs
SMF 1.4682 100 km 489.7 µs 979.4 µs
Difference — 100 km 156.0 µs saved by HCF 312.0 µs saved by HCF

The one-way difference is 1.56 µs per kilometre in this example. Relative to the SMF value, that is a 31.9% reduction. These figures describe the fiber alone; transceivers, amplifiers, switching and FEC add their own delays.

Build a fair HCF-versus-SMF test path

The most defensible design is a matched A/B experiment. Test one cable, then replace it with the other while every other part of the path remains unchanged.

1. Characterize the installed route

  1. Measure the optical length of each candidate path with the method appropriate to the cable and instrument. Record the length in both directions if the route is asymmetric.
  2. Inventory every connector, splice, patch panel, bend and slack loop. Photograph or label the reference planes so the HCF and SMF measurements start and end at the same points.
  3. Record the operating wavelength, launch power, ambient temperature and cable temperature at the time of each run.
  4. Document amplifiers, regenerators, switches, transceivers and test adapters. A different optic or firmware mode can add more delay than the fiber change.

2. Match the control

Use equal measured optical lengths whenever possible. If the routes cannot be equal, normalize the result to delay per kilometre and state the length mismatch explicitly. Keep the following fixed:

  • Both tools are designed to fit into difficult to reach spaces
  • Complete a wide range of applications with a high-performance motor that delivers up to 300 UWO, and an impact driver delivering up to 1,400 in-lbs of torque
  • Both the DEWALT impact driver and drill driver feature integrated LED work lights with a convenient 20-second delay, ensuring enhanced visibility in dimly lit or challenging work areas

  • Transceiver models, firmware and line rate.
  • Wavelength and optical launch power.
  • Switches, routers, patch cords and electrical cabling.
  • FEC mode, framing and timestamp location.
  • Traffic pattern, packet size and test duration.

Do not change both the fiber and the transceiver at once. Otherwise, an apparent latency improvement cannot be assigned to HCF.

3. Choose stable timestamp points

For one-way delay, timestamp the same recognizable test pattern at the transmit and receive reference planes. Hardware timestamps are preferable to operating-system timestamps because scheduler jitter can be comparable to the fiber difference on short links. Synchronize the clocks with a method whose accuracy is smaller than the improvement you are trying to resolve, and record synchronization error for every run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If synchronized one-way timing is unavailable, measure RTT. First connect the transmit and receive instruments with a short reference path, measure the fixed offset, then insert the fiber under test. After subtracting the calibrated equipment delay, divide the remaining RTT by two only when the forward and return paths are equivalent. If they are not equivalent, report the round trip without claiming a one-way value.

Calibrate the instruments before inserting fiber

  1. Connect the timing instruments directly, or through the shortest characterized reference path available.
  2. Send the same test pattern and measure the baseline one-way or RTT delay.
  3. Repeat the baseline measurement enough times to determine its spread and detect clock drift.
  4. Insert the HCF or SMF path without changing timestamp settings, pattern, line rate or optical modules.
  5. Subtract the baseline offset from every sample. Keep the calibration file with the run so another engineer can reproduce the arithmetic.

Use the same timestamp event in both configurations. Moving the timestamp from a gearbox output in one test to a packet boundary in the other can create a false difference larger than the expected propagation saving.

Run repeated measurements under realistic traffic

Take many samples rather than quoting the fastest or first result. Run each fiber in at least two conditions:

Report absolute one-way delay and RTT, the difference in microseconds, the percentage improvement, the uncertainty, and the equipment-latency budget. Label every number as fiber-only or end-to-end.

Use an OTDR for route and fault diagnostics—not as the sole latency meter

An optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) is useful before and after the latency test. It can locate connectors, splices, breaks, bends and loss events, helping you prove that the HCF and SMF paths have comparable physical integrity. It does not replace a calibrated delay measurement.

Configure the OTDR for HCF behavior

  • Set the group-index value appropriate to the HCF under test. Using a conventional SMF value can make the displayed distance and event positions wrong.
  • Check the instrument’s backscatter and reflection assumptions. Hollow-core guidance can produce traces that do not resemble a standard solid-core fiber.
  • Use launch and receive fibers long enough to separate the first and last connectors from the instrument’s dead zones.
  • Record wavelength, pulse width, averaging time and range. Keep these settings identical when comparing paths.

Use an OTDR trace to verify route length and event loss, then use timestamped traffic or a dedicated time-domain instrument for latency. When distributed modal or birefringence information is required, an optical frequency-domain reflectometer (OFDR) is the more suitable specialist tool.

Account for temperature, wavelength and modal behavior

A room-temperature sample is not a deployment guarantee. HCF latency changes with group index, modal behavior and temperature. Repeat the measurement after the cable has experienced the temperature range expected in the installation, and allow the cable to reach thermal equilibrium before each run.

Test at every operating wavelength that will be used in service. Keep launch conditions constant because changing the excited modes can change the measured group delay. If a link uses different wavelengths in opposite directions, measure each direction separately.

Record whether the result is a stable mean or a distribution with mode-dependent excursions. A small average advantage accompanied by large modal spread may be less useful than a slightly smaller but highly repeatable improvement.

What published measurements show

Published demonstrations support the measurement approach but do not establish one universal saving for every route.

Separate the fiber gain from the equipment budget

Create a delay budget with one line for every fixed contributor:

  • Transmit and receive optical modules.
  • Gearboxes, serializers and deserializers.
  • FEC encoding and decoding.
  • Switching or routing queues under the chosen traffic load.
  • Amplifiers, regenerators and electrical cables.
  • Connectors, splices and patch-panel traversal.
  • Clock synchronization and timestamp uncertainty.

Subtract only what has been independently calibrated. If the fiber-only HCF improvement is 156 µs over 100 km but the transponder and FEC budget is several hundred microseconds, the end-to-end percentage will be much smaller. That is not a failed HCF test; it means the architecture must remove or reduce the dominant non-fiber delays before the propagation advantage becomes visible.

Troubleshoot inconsistent or implausible results

The measured saving is near zero

  • Check that the timestamp is not inside a transponder or switch whose delay dominates both paths.
  • Verify that the HCF and SMF lengths are actually matched.
  • Confirm that the same FEC, framing and optical modules were used.
  • Inspect the clock synchronization error and calibration baseline.

The saving is larger than the calculated value

  • Recheck group-index settings and the optical length used in the calculation.
  • Look for a changed route, missing patch cord or bypassed device in one configuration.
  • Compare traffic load and queue occupancy between runs.
  • Inspect OTDR traces for reflections or faults that force an unexpected path.

The delay wanders over time

  • Log temperature at the cable and equipment, not only room temperature.
  • Repeat at the service wavelength and verify launch power and modal conditions.
  • Increase sample count and examine the distribution for modal excursions rather than relying on one average.
  • Check clock drift and re-run the short-path calibration.

The OTDR distance looks wrong

Verify the HCF group-index value, backscatter model, pulse width and launch-fiber setup. Treat the OTDR distance as a diagnostic result until it agrees with a separately measured route length.

Report the result so another engineer can reproduce it

A useful test report includes:

  • HCF and SMF part descriptions, measured lengths and route diagrams.
  • Wavelength, launch power, line rate, FEC mode, transceiver firmware and switch configuration.
  • Timestamp reference planes, clock-synchronization method and calibration offset.
  • Temperature, test date, traffic pattern, sample count and run order.
  • Fiber-only one-way and RTT values, end-to-end values, uncertainty and confidence interval.
  • OTDR settings and event traces, plus any OFDR measurements.
  • A delay budget identifying which components obscure or preserve the propagation saving.

Make the deployment decision

Choose HCF for a latency-sensitive route only after the measured improvement survives the conditions that matter operationally: the deployed length, operating wavelengths, temperature range, modal launch state and complete transceiver/FEC architecture. A statistically significant fiber-only gain is valuable when propagation is a meaningful share of the budget. If electronics dominate, redesigning timestamp points, FEC settings or switching may produce a larger end-to-end improvement than changing fiber alone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The defensible conclusion comes from a matched, calibrated comparison: calculate the expected delay from group index, measure both fibers with identical equipment, validate the route with OTDR, stress temperature and wavelength, and publish uncertainty alongside the claimed microseconds saved.
