To find out whether AI personalization increases e-commerce conversions, run a randomized experiment: keep eligible shoppers in a control group on the current experience, and show the AI-personalized experience to a treatment group. Measure purchase conversion across everyone assigned to each group—not only people who clicked or engaged—and check revenue, margin, data quality, and uncertainty before deciding whether to roll it out.

Why a randomized test is necessary

A before-and-after comparison cannot tell you whether personalization caused a change. Seasonality, promotions, traffic mix, inventory, and other concurrent changes can also affect purchases. Random assignment gives the control and treatment groups a comparable starting point, allowing you to estimate the effect of the experience you changed. The ExP Platform practical guide describes controlled experiments as a strong design for establishing causal relationships between changes and user behavior: ExP Platform practical guide.

A comparison between shoppers who chose to click a recommendation and those who did not is not a causal estimate. Clicking is a choice that can reflect pre-existing intent, so the two groups may differ even before the recommendation has an effect.

Define the experiment before it starts

Write a testable hypothesis

For example: “Among eligible storefront visitors, showing the AI recommendation policy on the product listing page increases the chance of a completed purchase within seven days of first eligible exposure, compared with the current recommendation policy, without reducing revenue per visitor or contribution margin.” Set the page, eligible population, purchase definition, and attribution window to fit your store.

Specify exactly what counts as the treatment: which inputs the model may use, when recommendations appear, what happens when the model has no result, and whether the experience persists on later visits. Keep the model, prompts or rules, catalog, and other treatment elements fixed during the test unless changing them is explicitly part of the experiment.

Choose a stable randomization unit

Usually, assign each eligible user or customer persistently to one group rather than randomizing every page view. If you cannot identify shoppers before login, choose whether assignment applies to a browser, session, or account, and interpret the result for that unit. Keep each unit in the same group throughout the test.

Record assignment, eligibility, actual exposure, and outcome events with timestamps and group labels. Analyze all units as assigned, including people who did not click a recommendation or fully engage with the treatment. This is an intention-to-treat analysis; filtering to engaged shoppers after assignment can undo the comparability randomization created. If shoppers switch devices or accounts, document what you can join and how cross-device exposure could dilute the measured effect.

Set the primary outcome and denominator

A useful primary outcome for a purchase-focused test is:

Purchase conversion rate = distinct randomized eligible units with at least one qualifying completed order in the attribution window ÷ all randomized eligible units.

Before launch, define a qualifying completed order—for example, whether it must be paid and whether an immediate cancellation disqualifies it—along with the attribution window, currency, duplicate handling, and treatment of refunds. Keep the denominator tied to assigned eligible units; do not quietly switch to sessions or recommendation clickers. Optimizely distinguishes unique conversions, which count a visitor once, from total conversions, and defines unique-conversion rate as the share of unique visitors who converted: Optimizely results documentation.

  • Absolute conversion difference: treatment rate minus control rate, in percentage points.
  • Relative conversion lift: (treatment rate − control rate) ÷ control rate.
  • Uncertainty: a confidence or credible interval for the difference and the decision threshold set before launch.
  • Commercial outcomes: revenue per randomized unit (often called revenue per visitor or user), average order value, and orders per unit.
  • Guardrails: relevant measures such as contribution margin, discount cost, returns or cancellations, page latency, out-of-stock exposure, complaints, and unsubscribe rate.
  • Funnel diagnostics: recommendation impressions, product click-through, add-to-cart, checkout starts, and checkout completion.

Clicks and add-to-cart rates can help explain where behavior changed, but they do not replace the purchase outcome. If a treatment changes both recommendations and promotions, the experiment estimates the combined change; isolating the recommendation effect requires a separate design.

Shopify’s personalization guidance likewise suggests comparing a control with the original experience against a variant with personalization, using a measure such as revenue per user, and cautions against creating segments too small to support reliable inference: Shopify personalization guidance.

Plan sample size, duration, and stopping rules

Use your historical baseline conversion rate and eligible traffic to determine a feasible sample size for the smallest effect worth acting on. Decide in advance on the statistical approach, desired power, group allocation, sample target or planned duration, and stopping procedure. There is no universal two-week rule: the time needed depends on conversion and traffic, and the experiment should cover normal weekly shopping patterns and relevant campaign conditions. Google Search Central notes that reliable test duration varies with conversion rates and site traffic: Google Search Central testing guidance.

Avoid repeatedly checking results and stopping as soon as a favorable number appears unless your analysis method supports sequential monitoring. Do not change variants or eligibility midway without accounting for that change in the design. If traffic is too low to detect a commercially meaningful effect, report the test as underpowered or choose a larger, more consequential treatment. An inconclusive result does not prove that personalization has no effect.

Validate assignment and event data before interpreting results

A promising lift is not trustworthy if group assignment or event capture is broken. Check these items before making a decision:

  • Hard hat clip- attaches for easy access
  • Quick dry time with reduced smearing and marking
  • Observed group allocation matches the configured allocation, overall and across important entry channels; investigate any sample ratio mismatch (SRM).
  • Assignment persists, and each unit receives the intended experience.
  • Eligible units, exposures, purchases, revenue, refunds, and timestamps reconcile with analytics and order systems.
  • Conversion events are deduplicated consistently, and the same attribution window applies to both groups.
  • There was no group-specific logging loss, page failure, inventory problem, or rollout issue.
  • Concurrent experiments and promotions are balanced or documented, and possible interference between experiences has been considered.

SRM means the observed group proportions differ significantly from the expected proportions. Microsoft’s PlayFab guidance explains that missing or redundant data can create selection bias and advises resolving the mismatch before drawing conclusions: Microsoft Learn: sample ratio mismatch.

Analyze the result and decide whether to roll out

Use the randomization unit and analysis plan selected before launch. Show the control and treatment conversion rates, sample counts, absolute difference, relative lift, uncertainty interval, and any exclusions. Do not report only relative lift: a change from 2% to 2.2% is a 0.2-percentage-point increase and a 10% relative increase.

Roll out only when the result is credible, commercially meaningful, and acceptable under the prespecified guardrails. If conversion rises while average order value or margin falls, make the decision based on the overall business outcome rather than conversion alone. If the total result is neutral but one segment looks positive, treat that pattern as a hypothesis for a confirmatory test unless the segment and comparison were specified in advance and adequately powered. Monitoring after rollout can reveal model drift or changing behavior, but it is not a substitute for the randomized test.

How to interpret published personalization results

Published examples can illustrate what to measure, but they do not predict what another store will achieve. Optimizely’s 2026 report analyzes 173,000 experiments across more than 1,200 companies from 2018 to 2026. It reports that experiments classified as sound won 58% of the time versus 35% for those classified as poor setups, and that personalized web experiments on targeted audiences had 17.4% higher average test impact. Those are vendor-dataset comparisons, not randomized evidence that businesses adopting personalization improve more; the report describes its AI-adoption comparisons as observational and says they cannot fully isolate causal differences. Its definition of a “true experiment”—including at least 1,000 visitors in each arm—is a report-specific inclusion rule, not a universal sample-size recommendation: Optimizely’s 173,000-experiment report.

One Optimizely homepage recommendation example reported a 136% increase in click-through to product-detail pages, which is a click-through result, not purchase-conversion lift. A separate homepage messaging experiment reported a 6.07% decline in add-to-cart and a 10.4% decline in click-through. These are case-specific outcomes, not benchmarks or expected effects for another merchant: Optimizely retail experimentation examples.

Comparing personalization policies

When testing two or more policies, compare them on the same randomized eligible population and the same prespecified measures: purchase conversion, absolute and relative lift, revenue per visitor, average order value, contribution margin, uncertainty, power, latency, reliability, customer and operational guardrails, and the cost and complexity of maintaining each policy. Hold model version and eligibility fixed within each comparison, or use a design such as a multi-arm or factorial experiment when you need to distinguish their separate effects.
