Measure a managed detection and response (MDR) service with a scorecard that tracks the full incident lifecycle, tests whether relevant threats are detected, and evaluates the quality of investigation, communication, and response—not just one average response time. Before comparing results, agree on what starts and stops every clock, which cases count, how severity is assigned, and what each party is responsible for.

What MDR performance measurement should tell you

A useful measurement program answers three questions: Can the service detect activity that matters to your organization? Does it investigate and communicate findings well enough for people to act? And does its response help contain or resolve the incident under the authority and workflows you have agreed?

No single metric answers all three. Mean time to detect (MTTD), mean time to respond (MTTR), and alert counts can help describe service activity, but they can mislead when their definitions, incident populations, and exclusions are unclear. A fast average does not prove that the service saw every relevant threat or handled the cases well. A low number of observed incidents could reflect effective defenses—or attacks that were not detected.

Build the scorecard around explicit definitions, stage-by-stage timelines, case evidence, outcome quality, and controlled tests. Use the results in recurring service governance so identified gaps lead to owners, changes, and retesting.

Define each metric before measuring it

Metric names are not definitions. “Detection,” “response,” “acknowledgement,” “validation,” “notification,” “containment,” and “resolution” can describe different events. Providers may use the same label for clocks with different start and stop points, so their figures are not comparable until you align those boundaries.

For example, MITRE Engenuity’s 2024 Managed Services article defines MTTD as the time from attack occurrence until an email alert is sent. NTT’s SamurAI MDR dashboard defines “Time to Validate” from the first contributing alert visible to its SOC until an incident is created in the SOC ticketing system, and “Time to Notify” from incident creation until the client is notified. Those measurements describe different intervals; their labels alone do not make them equivalent.

Write down the measurement contract

For every scorecard metric, record the elements below. These definitions should be agreed by the customer and provider, not inferred from a dashboard label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Start and stop events: State the exact timestamp or event that begins and ends the clock. An exercise, for instance, might measure from simulated attack execution to alert transmission; an operational dashboard might begin when an alert is visible to the SOC.
  • Severity and case scope: Define what qualifies as an incident, how priorities are assigned, and whether results are separated by severity, incident type, or alert source.
  • Time basis: Specify whether the clock runs continuously or only during business hours, and name the timezone.
  • Interval ownership: Identify whether the provider, customer, or a dependency owns each interval. Waiting for customer approval or missing telemetry may affect elapsed time without reflecting analyst work.
  • Population and window: State the reporting period, number of qualifying incidents, excluded cases, and how open cases are handled.
  • Statistic and commitment: Distinguish a mean, median, percentile, case-level duration, or service-level compliance rate. A historical average is not the same thing as a contractual commitment.

Keep these definitions with the metric in reports and contracts. If a definition changes, date the change and avoid presenting the new and old series as if they were calculated on the same basis.

Measure the incident lifecycle in stages

A lifecycle view shows where time is spent and helps distinguish detection delay from later investigation, communication, approval, or response delays. Use only the stages relevant to your service, but keep their boundaries explicit.

Stage Example interval to define What to inspect
Detection Suspicious activity or simulated attack to detection or alert transmission When the behavior occurred, when it was detected, and when the alert became available to the agreed recipient
Acknowledgement or triage Alert received or visible to analyst acknowledgement or triage start Whether the alert entered the expected queue and when active review began
Validation and investigation Alert to validated incident creation or completion of investigation When the provider had enough evidence to classify the event and support its conclusions
Customer notification Incident creation to notification through the agreed channel Whether the right contact received useful information in time to act
Response Notification or authorization to a response action Approval dependencies, response authority, and what action the provider actually performed
Containment, recovery, or closure Response action to the agreed containment, recovery, or closure event What was contained or restored, what remains open, and who owns outstanding work

Report aggregate trends alongside representative incident timelines. Segment by priority and relevant incident type so that a changing mix of easy and complex cases does not disguise performance changes. Explain outliers with case context instead of assuming every long interval is an analyst failure. NTT’s documentation describes both average stage metrics and per-incident timelines, and notes that complexity, evidence availability, and operational conditions can affect duration.

A UK G-Cloud Digital Marketplace service definition dated 8 May 2022 gives examples of reporting fields: mean time to acknowledge, measured from alert detection to triage start; mean time to investigate, from alert detection to investigation completion; case-handling times by stage; case status by priority; and closure categories and reasons. Its service definition also describes views by alert source, case priority, and MITRE ATT&CK tactic. This is an example of possible reporting, not a universal MDR standard.

Judge quality and outcomes as well as speed

A timeline shows when work happened; quality measures help establish whether it was useful. Review evidence and actual outcomes rather than rewarding a provider simply for producing more alerts or closing cases quickly.

  • 【Plug and play】: This mouse and keyboard pad is powered by USB, plug and play, no driver required. One button control light modes. Press one time to change the lighting mode, press twice to change the brightness, press and hold about 3 seconds turn ON/OFF.
  • Alert actionability: Does the notification explain what happened, where and when it happened, who or what was affected, why it matters, and what the customer should do next?
  • Investigation quality: Are the conclusions supported by evidence? Does the case record include relevant entities, a clear timeline, severity, and likely impact?
  • Communication: Was the correct contact informed through the agreed channel, with enough context and a clear request or recommended action?
  • Response outcome: What was isolated, blocked, contained, or left for the customer? What authority or dependency determined the outcome?
  • Misses and learning: What did a real incident, exercise, or review reveal? What was changed, who owns it, and how will the change be checked?
  • Noise and volume: Review alert volume and disposition to diagnose coverage or tuning issues. Do not use raw ticket counts as a security outcome or analyst quota.

MITRE Engenuity’s 2024 Managed Services article identifies four reporting dimensions: Actionability, Volume, Mean Time to Detect, and Analysis/Enrichment. It describes actionability in terms of essential incident details—what, where, when, who, and why—and analysis/enrichment in terms of the clarity, accuracy, enrichment, and usability of after-action reports. These dimensions complement lifecycle timing; they do not replace case-level review.

Validate detection with controlled tests

Historical incidents alone cannot establish detection effectiveness. Successful attacks may be rare because defenses are working, but the same low incident count could occur when attacks are missed. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) recommends red teaming and purple teaming to simulate attacks relevant to the organization and assess whether they are detected and escalated.

Build a test plan around relevant attack paths

Break a plausible attack path into observable behaviors or atomic stages, often aligned to MITRE ATT&CK. For each test, agree on the behavior, required telemetry, and expected process before execution. Record:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • The test behavior and why it is relevant to your organization.
  • Which logs, sensors, identity sources, cloud services, or other telemetry are required, and whether the MDR provider can see them.
  • Whether the behavior was detected, investigated, escalated, and communicated.
  • The elapsed time at each agreed lifecycle stage, using the same clock boundaries as the scorecard.
  • The quality of the alert, the evidence behind the analysis, and any response action taken.
  • Any gap, its owner, the corrective change, and the date or condition for retesting.

Use authorized testing and coordinate scope, safety controls, contacts, and response expectations with the provider and internal owners. A test should establish whether the operational service behaves as agreed, not just whether a tool can generate an alert.

Vary execution and use findings to improve

Repeatedly automating one exact test can reward recognition of that specific execution rather than detection of the underlying behavior. The NCSC advises varying implementations and treating exercises as a way to improve the service, not only as a pass/fail audit. Red teaming can more closely mimic a covert attack; purple teaming can make more time available for broader coverage because the activity is not covert, as the NCSC notes.

MITRE Engenuity’s 2024 evaluation selected 44 focused sub-steps from 174 executed sub-steps. That figure describes the scope of that evaluation, not a general MDR coverage target or a performance benchmark. Use tests that reflect your own environment and threat concerns rather than treating another evaluation’s test count as a required score.

Interpret averages, samples, and exclusions carefully

A mean summarizes a group; it does not show the experience of every incident or promise that future cases will meet the average. When you present a mean, include its definition, period, incident count, severity mix, exclusions, and a view of the distribution or notable outliers. Where the data supports it, pair the mean with a median or percentile and the case-level timelines behind unusual results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Small samples are unstable: A few cases can move an average substantially. NTT’s SamurAI MDR dashboard documentation says it requires at least five incidents before displaying metrics. That is NTT’s display rule, not a universal statistical threshold for MDR reporting.
  • Exclusions change the picture: Ask which categories are excluded and why. NTT lists consulting-driven incidents and incidents without evidence among exclusions from its dashboard metrics. Other providers may define their populations differently.
  • Validation duration is not a simple speed score: NTT explains that a longer validation interval can reflect a more intricate or multistage threat, and says its Time to Validate metric represents time needed to establish reliable evidence rather than analyst speed alone.
  • Ticket volume is not proof of security: The NCSC cautions that ticket counts and similar health metrics can drive the wrong behavior if reported to customers or analysts as measures of success.
  • Open cases need a declared treatment: State whether a report includes them, how their elapsed time is handled, and whether the reporting window cuts off an unfinished investigation.

The reviewed sources establish no universal MTTD or MTTR target. Set service objectives against your organization’s risk, monitored coverage, severity model, workflow, response authority, customer dependencies, and contract definitions. Validate those objectives with exercises and actual case evidence instead of importing an unsupported market-wide benchmark.

Compare MDR providers on the same evidence

When evaluating multiple services, give each provider the same definitions and questions. Ask for underlying timestamps, case examples, test outcomes, and explanations of exclusions—not only summary dashboard values.

Comparison area Evidence to request
Coverage and telemetry Which systems, identity sources, cloud services, and other data sources are monitored, and what dependencies or gaps remain?
Detection validation How are exercises selected, authorized, varied, and reviewed? Can you see behavior-level results and retest evidence?
Lifecycle performance What are the exact clock boundaries, severity slices, populations, distributions, and contractual commitments?
Alert and investigation quality Can the provider show evidence-based, enriched, actionable reports and representative case timelines?
Response authority and execution What actions can the provider take directly, under what approval rules, and how are customer dependencies recorded?
Transparency and governance Can the customer inspect timestamps, exclusions, cases, test outcomes, service changes, and corrective actions?
Customer fit Does the service integrate with existing tools and workflows, and can the organization meet the approvals and response dependencies it requires?

KPMG’s 2023 buyer guide recommends examining capabilities, experience, service quality, integration, dashboards, data handling, references, and fit with business needs. It also frames practical questions buyers should ask: “What’s your typical SLA and incident response plan?”; “What’s your Mean-Time-To-Detect (MTTD) and Mean-Time-To-Respond (MTTR) for a critical security incident?”; “How will you give our organization the visibility we need to be confident your SOC is making the right decisions for us?”; “What’s the process if you miss a threat?”; and “What’s your ‘continuous improvement’ process?” Ask for definitions and evidence with each answer.

Put the scorecard into service governance

Metrics have value when they lead to decisions. Set a regular review with the provider and the internal people responsible for security operations, incident response, and relevant business approvals. The review should examine definitions, trends, notable cases, exercise results, service changes, coverage gaps, and corrective actions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Agree on operations and reporting in writing

Contracts and operating documents should make clear:

  • Which severities have which acknowledgement, notification, investigation, and response expectations.
  • What qualifies as an incident and which events or cases are excluded from reported metrics.
  • What the provider may do without customer approval, and how approval is requested when it is needed.
  • What the provider must communicate, when it must do so, and through which channel.
  • How outages, missing telemetry, customer-caused delays, and unconfirmed alerts affect the clock and reporting.
  • How suspected missed threats are investigated, documented, and followed by service improvements.

Close the improvement loop

For every material gap, record the finding, evidence, accountable owner, agreed change, due date or retest condition, and outcome of the retest. Revisit whether the change improved detection or response without creating unacceptable noise or operational risk. Keep revisions to metric definitions visible so a service does not appear to improve merely because its measurement boundaries changed.
