To measure carbon stored on your land credibly, define the property boundary, decide which carbon pools and soil depth are included, collect representative field data, obtain laboratory or inventory measurements, and document the method well enough to repeat it. Soil carbon concentration by itself is not a stock: the calculation also needs the soil volume or mass represented, including bulk density, area, and depth. Forests require a separate inventory of trees and other biomass. A stock is a measurement at one point in time; sequestration is a change demonstrated by comparable measurements over time.
Start by defining what “carbon stored” means
“Carbon stored on my land” can describe several different measurements. Write the intended claim before collecting samples, because the boundary, data and quality requirements change with the claim.
Carbon concentration
A laboratory may report soil organic carbon as a concentration, such as a percentage of soil mass. This tells you how carbon-rich the analyzed soil is. It does not tell you how many tonnes of carbon are present across a field unless you also know how much soil that concentration represents.
Carbon stock
A stock is the quantity of carbon inside a stated boundary at a stated time. For soil, the stock depends on carbon concentration, bulk density, the sampled depth, the area represented, and the units used. A result should therefore say, for example, which field or management unit was measured, the depth interval, whether the value is soil organic carbon or total carbon, and whether the result is reported per hectare, acre, or the whole property.

Carbon sequestration or stock change
Sequestration is a change in stock over time, not the amount present on a single sampling date. Demonstrating a change requires comparable measurements, or an accounting method that is appropriate for the land-use change and reporting purpose. A higher result from a different depth, season, laboratory method or sampling design is not automatically evidence that the land sequestered carbon.
Set the measurement boundary and pools
Draw the boundary on a map and divide the property into areas that differ in land cover, soil, management or age. Record the area of each unit and keep the map with the project records. A mixed property may need separate estimates for cropland, pasture, woodland, wetland and nonvegetated areas rather than one convenient sample for everything.
Then list the carbon pools to be included. A soil-only estimate omits living vegetation and dead organic matter. A whole-land account may include:

- Below-ground biomass, including roots.
- Litter, such as fallen leaves and fine plant debris.
- Deadwood.
- Soil carbon, with the depth and carbon form specified.
FAO’s EX-ACT tool, version 9 in its 2022 second-edition guidance, accounts for changes in these five quantifiable pools. Its pool structure is a useful way to check whether two estimates are actually comparable. Do not compare a soil-only number with a whole-land number as if they described the same stock.
Choose a method for your land cover and purpose
| Land or objective | Typical measurement pathway | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Cropland, pasture or range | Stratified soil sampling, bulk-density measurements and laboratory carbon analysis; add perennial biomass data where relevant. | Sampling depth, strata, number and location of cores, bulk-density method, laboratory method and quality controls. |
| Forest or woody land | Forest inventory plots, tree measurements and statistical estimation of biomass; add litter, deadwood, roots or soil if they are in the boundary. | Plot design, tree variables, allometric equations, uncertainty, monitoring plan and quality assurance. |
| Mixed property | Separate methods for each land-cover stratum, followed by an area-weighted account. | Consistent boundaries, pool definitions and units across strata. |
| Management decision | A fit-for-purpose estimate with enough sampling to guide management and detect meaningful change. | Whether uncertainty is acceptable for the decision; a rough estimate is not automatically credit-grade. |
| Formal project or carbon-market reporting | The applicable protocol, approved equations or models, verification and prescribed monitoring schedule. | Baseline, additionality or eligibility rules, uncertainty treatment, QA/QC, audit records and reporting units. |
Compare candidate methods by land cover, pools included, direct measurements versus models, uncertainty, geographic scale, cost and labor, repeatability, and reporting purpose. The most sophisticated method is not useful if you cannot repeat it under the same conditions.
How to measure carbon in agricultural, pasture and range soils
1. Define the sampling unit and write a plan
Choose a field, management unit or soil stratum with a known area. Record land use, soil type or map unit where available, crop or grazing history, tillage, amendments, irrigation, recent weather and the date of sampling. Note any features that could bias a sample, such as manure piles, fence lines, eroded knolls, waterways, roads or compacted gateways. Decide in advance whether these areas are excluded, sampled as separate strata or included in a representative proportion.
Specify the soil depth interval and how layers will be handled. A single 0–30-centimetre sample is only an example of a possible interval, not a universal requirement; projects should follow the depth required by their objective or protocol. If you plan to measure change, preserve the same depth definition at every round.

2. Design representative locations
A convenient sample taken near a gate or accessible corner cannot be assumed to represent a whole field. Use a documented random, systematic or stratified design appropriate to the field’s variability. Keep a location list or coordinates, and use the same design logic at later dates. For a large or heterogeneous property, divide it into strata first and allocate samples across them rather than averaging unlike areas together.
There is no universal field-sample count that applies to every property. The appropriate number depends on variability, the size of the area, the precision needed and the protocol. A statistician, soil scientist or project MRV specialist can help estimate sampling intensity when a decision or credit claim depends on uncertainty.
3. Collect soil cores consistently
Use a soil auger or core sampler suited to the soil, moisture and required depth. A sampler is a collection tool, not a carbon meter. Clean equipment between locations, prevent loss of fine material, label every increment, and record refusals, stones, roots and deviations from the plan. Composite samples can reduce laboratory cost, but the compositing rule must be written down so the result is reproducible and its variance is not hidden.
Keep field notes with the sample identification, stratum, coordinates, depth, date, recent management and any condition that may affect interpretation. If the protocol requires separate depth increments, do not combine them merely to simplify shipping.

4. Measure bulk density or obtain defensible values
Bulk density is the dry mass of soil per unit of volume. It converts a concentration into a stock for a defined depth and area. Measure it with an appropriate intact-core procedure where possible, including coarse fragments and corrections required by the protocol, or use a documented source when direct measurement is not feasible. Do not silently substitute a generic bulk-density value: compaction, organic matter, texture and stones can change the result substantially.
5. Use a laboratory method and retain quality records
Send samples to a laboratory that states its analytical method, units, detection limits and quality-control procedures. Clarify whether the requested result is organic carbon, inorganic carbon or total carbon; these are not interchangeable. FAO’s GLOSOLAN standard operating procedures include harmonized laboratory procedures and soil-organic-carbon methods published from 2021 through 2025. A laboratory result is only as useful as the field sampling and bulk-density information attached to it.
Retain chain-of-custody records, sample preparation details, calibration or reference-material information supplied by the laboratory, replicate results and any rejected or reanalyzed samples. If a later measurement uses a different preparation or analytical method, record the change and assess whether the values remain comparable.

6. Calculate the stock with explicit units
For each depth and stratum, calculate stock from:
carbon stock = carbon concentration × bulk density × soil depth × represented area
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Apply the unit conversions needed for the chosen reporting unit and document how coarse fragments, rock volume, layers and carbon form were treated. Sum strata only after each has been calculated on a consistent basis. Report both the estimate and its uncertainty when the method provides one; a precise-looking number without sampling uncertainty can be misleading.
USDA examples and what they do—and do not—tell an individual landowner
The USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Soil Carbon Monitoring Network (SCMN) collects field-based soil, perennial-biomass and management data on cropland and grazing lands. NRCS describes its goal this way: “The goal of the SCMN is to collect field-based data to assess and track trends related to soil carbon sequestration associated with conservation programs and management practices on cropland, pastureland, and range lands across the country.” Its design supports analysis across sites; it is not a turnkey sample prescription for a single farm.
The NRCS Rapid Carbon Assessment (RaCA) illustrates the scale of a national survey: 144,833 samples from the upper 1 meter of 32,084 soil profiles at 6,017 randomly selected locations, according to the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service’s 2013 assessment. RaCA measured organic and inorganic carbon with visible and near-infrared spectroscopy and bulk density with traditional methods. Those figures describe a national assessment, not a recommended number of samples for your property.
FAO’s GSOC MRV Protocol, announced on September 17, 2020, provides a farm-level framework for measuring, monitoring, reporting and verifying soil-organic-carbon stocks, changes and related greenhouse-gas removals. FAO’s RECSOIL initiative builds on GSOC-MRV with soil-health tools and implementation support. Check the current protocol materials and local applicability before adopting either framework.
How to measure carbon in forests and woody land
Establish a forest inventory boundary
Map the forest or woodland area and separate stands that differ in species, age, structure, productivity, disturbance history or management. Decide whether the account covers only live trees or also shrubs, saplings, roots, litter, deadwood and soil. State whether harvested wood products or off-site transfers are inside or outside the boundary; a forest standing-stock estimate does not automatically account for them.
Lay out plots and measure trees
Use a probability-based or otherwise defensible plot design, then measure the variables required by the chosen inventory equations. Common field observations include plot area, tree species, diameter at a specified height, tree height, status (live or dead), and counts of smaller stems or regeneration. Record slope, disturbance and missing or damaged trees. The design must support statistical estimation for the whole stand, not merely a tally of the easiest trees to reach.

Tree measurements are converted to biomass with species- and region-appropriate allometric equations or another approved method. Document the equation source, input ranges, conversion factors, carbon fraction assumptions and uncertainty. Add separate field or modeled components for roots, litter and deadwood when those pools are included.
Use remote sensing as a complement
Airborne lidar, satellite imagery or other remote sensing can help stratify forests and extend plot information across a large area. A 2020 US Forest Service report describes a lidar-assisted protocol combining field plots and airborne lidar at six US locations. That example demonstrates an integrated monitoring system; it does not establish that lidar alone provides a ground-truthed carbon stock for an individual property. Remote-sensing estimates still depend on field calibration, model assumptions and validation.
The US Forest Service’s Measurement Guidelines for the Sequestration of Forest Carbon (2007) addresses inventory design, monitoring, statistical estimation and quality assurance for practitioners with forest-measurement knowledge. It is technical guidance, not a simple consumer calculation.
Whole-land accounting, models and mixed methods
A whole-land estimate often combines direct measurements with models. USDA’s 2024 Greenhouse Gas Methods Report describes examples in which mineral-soil organic carbon is estimated with the DayCent model or stock-change factors, while tree biomass is estimated with allometric equations and entity-measured data. The suitable approach depends on land category, available data and the reporting method.
Label modeled values as estimates and list their inputs, calibration region, assumptions, validation evidence and uncertainty. A model can fill gaps between measurements, but it cannot remove uncertainty created by an unrepresentative sample or an incorrect land-use history. If remote sensing, default factors and field data are combined, maintain a clear data lineage showing which pools were measured and which were inferred.
Make the result credible and repeatable
- Boundary: Keep a map, area calculation and description of included and excluded land.
- Pools: Name every included pool and identify omitted pools.
- Depth and units: State soil intervals, area units, carbon form and reporting units.
- Sampling: Preserve the design, coordinates, strata, compositing rule and deviations.
- Laboratory or inventory method: Record analytical procedures, equations, instruments and calibration information.
- Quality assurance: Include blanks, duplicates, reference materials, remeasurement checks or other controls required by the method.
- Uncertainty: Report confidence or error estimates where the protocol provides them, and explain major sources of uncertainty.
- Version control: Date the protocol, spreadsheet, model and software inputs so a later analyst can reproduce the calculation.
For formal credits or claims, follow the applicable protocol rather than assembling an informal method from several sources. Verification may require an approved baseline, additionality analysis, permanence or reversal treatment, leakage accounting, uncertainty deductions and an independent review. A soil test, map or consumer device alone does not establish a credit-grade claim.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteMeasure change without confusing it with a larger number
To estimate sequestration, repeat the same measurement under comparable conditions. Keep the boundary, strata, depth, timing, sampling design, laboratory method, bulk-density treatment and calculation units consistent. If management changes, record when and where it changed so the time series can be interpreted.

Monitoring frequency is protocol-specific. USDA’s 2026 General Assessment of Agriculture and Forestry in US Carbon Markets gives one example: sampled soil-organic-carbon updates under the Climate Action Reserve Soil Enrichment Protocol are required at least every five years. That interval applies to the cited protocol example; it is not a universal rule for every farm, forest or carbon project.
When methods change, do not simply subtract the new result from the old one. Reconcile methods, reanalyze archived material where possible, or establish an overlap period in which both methods are applied. Report the time period and comparability limitations with the stock-change estimate.
Equipment, professional help and realistic costs
A soil auger or core sampler is the basic field tool for collecting soil. Select one for the required depth and soil conditions, and plan for cleaning, labels, sample bags, GPS or location records and safe transport. The tool does not measure carbon; laboratory analysis, bulk-density information, a sampling design and calculations remain necessary.

Common failure modes and fixes
| Failure | Why it invalidates or weakens the estimate | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Using one convenient soil sample for a whole property | It may represent only a small, atypical location. | Stratify the land and use a documented random or systematic design. |
| Reporting carbon percentage as tonnes of carbon | Concentration lacks soil mass, depth and area. | Measure or obtain bulk density and calculate stock for a stated depth and area. |
| Changing depth between sampling rounds | The two stocks cover different soil volumes. | Use the same depth intervals or apply a documented protocol for reconciling layers. |
| Ignoring bulk-density changes | Management can alter soil volume and density even when concentration changes little. | Measure bulk density consistently and report the method. |
| Comparing soil-only and whole-land totals | The pools and boundary differ. | Align pool coverage, boundary, units and time period before comparing. |
| Treating a map, satellite image or lidar output as ground truth | Remote sensing needs field calibration and assumptions. | Use field plots or samples for calibration and validation, and report model uncertainty. |
| Mixing laboratory methods without checking comparability | Preparation and analytical differences can look like a stock change. | Document methods, use the same laboratory where practical, and reconcile changes. |
| Claiming sequestration from a single measurement | A single stock has no observed time trend. | Repeat comparable measurements or use an approved stock-change accounting method. |
| Applying a national survey design to a farm | Large-scale assessment goals and local precision requirements differ. | Treat national programs as references, then design sampling for the property and decision. |
A practical workflow you can use
- State the question. Decide whether you need a rough management estimate, a baseline, a change estimate or formal reporting.
- Map the boundary. Record the area, land-cover strata, ownership or management units and excluded features.
- List the pools. Specify soil, above-ground biomass, below-ground biomass, litter and deadwood as applicable.
- Choose depth and units. Write the soil intervals, carbon form and reporting units before sampling.
- Design locations. Use random, systematic or stratified locations appropriate to variability and required precision.
- Collect field data. Take labeled cores or inventory plots, record coordinates and conditions, and measure bulk density where required.
- Analyze or model. Use a laboratory method, inventory equations or a validated model that matches the land cover and reporting protocol.
- Calculate and quantify uncertainty. Convert concentration and biomass data into stocks with explicit units, then combine strata and document error estimates.
- Archive the evidence. Keep maps, raw observations, laboratory reports, equations, scripts or spreadsheets, photographs, deviations and versioned protocols.
- Repeat consistently. Use the same boundary, design, depth, timing and methods when estimating stock change, or document and adjust any justified change.
How to report the result
A useful report lets another person understand exactly what the number means. Include:
- The property and stratum boundaries, areas and measurement date.
- The included and excluded carbon pools.
- Soil depths, bulk-density procedure and carbon analytical method, or forest plot and allometric methods.
- Sampling locations, design, sample count and any deviations.
- Stock values with units, uncertainty and the aggregation method.
- For modeled or remote-sensing values, the inputs, calibration, validation and assumptions.
- For a change estimate, both measurement dates, method comparability and the time interval.
- The protocol name and version when the result is intended for a formal program.
If you cannot state the boundary, depth, pools, method and date, describe the result as an incomplete indication rather than a definitive carbon stock. A transparent, repeatable estimate is more useful for management and more defensible for reporting than a highly precise number with unknown assumptions.
