There is no single measurement that proves both spin splitting and topology in an antiferromagnet. Researchers establish the band structure with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), test spin polarization with spin-resolved ARPES (SARPES), vary photon energy to separate surface from bulk contributions, and interpret every result using the material’s magnetic and crystal symmetries. Quantum oscillations provide an independent check on Fermi-surface geometry, but their phase and waveform are topology-related only under the right field orientation, symmetry assumptions and pocket geometry.
What each experiment actually establishes
Spin splitting and topological electronic states are related questions, but they are not the same observable. A detector records a signal; the conclusion about spin character, surface origin or topology requires controls, symmetry analysis and usually material-specific calculations. The first safeguard is to keep measured quantities separate from interpretations.
| Method | Directly measured | Useful distinction | What still requires interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|
| ARPES | Photoelectron intensity as a function of binding energy and crystal momentum | Band dispersions, Fermi-surface maps, and candidate surface or bulk states | Whether a feature is topological, magnetic in origin, or genuinely surface-derived |
| Photon-energy-dependent ARPES | How the same feature changes as photon energy changes | Different sensitivity to out-of-plane momentum; surface-like versus bulk-like dispersion | Matrix-element effects and final-state effects can also change intensity |
| SARPES | Spin polarization of selected photoelectrons, with a defined detector axis | Spin character and momentum-dependent spin texture of bands | Whether the measured polarization is intrinsic, fully resolved, and topologically required |
| Quantum oscillations | Periodic changes in transport or thermodynamic quantities versus magnetic field | Extremal Fermi-surface areas, effective masses and scattering information | Topological phase, Berry-phase interpretation and pocket connectivity |
A useful foundation is the ARPES review by Lv, Qian and Ding, which describes how energy- and momentum-resolved photoemission probes bulk and surface electronic structure in topological materials: Nature Reviews Physics (2019). Spin-sensitive detection and its practical constraints are discussed in the SARPES methods paper on 2H-NbSe2: Physical Review B (2021).

Prepare a measurement that can be reproduced
ARPES ejects electrons with ultraviolet or soft-X-ray photons. Measuring each electron’s kinetic energy and emission angle allows the experiment to reconstruct binding energy and the in-plane component of crystal momentum. Before interpreting a crossing or gap, record the conditions that determine what part of reciprocal space was sampled:

Begin with broad momentum cuts and constant-energy maps. Locate the chemical potential, identify band extrema and record the Fermi-surface contours before zooming in on a suspected splitting or crossing. Repeat symmetry-related cuts rather than relying on one visually attractive spectrum. A band separation that appears in one cut but disappears when the cut is moved can be a matrix-element or momentum-resolution effect rather than a physical gap.
Read the ARPES outputs conservatively
An energy–momentum image can show two dispersing branches where a nonmagnetic calculation predicts one, a gap at a crossing, or a surface-localized-looking band inside a projected bulk gap. These are observations. They become evidence for magnetic spin splitting only after the expected degeneracies and magnetic symmetries have been established and alternative causes—structural domains, bilayer splitting, unresolved bands, surface reconstruction or matrix elements—have been tested.
For each feature, preserve the unprocessed intensity map as well as any curvature, second-derivative or fitted representation. Processing can make weak bands visible, but it can also create apparent crossings and gaps. Report fitting windows and uncertainty when peak positions are used to quote a separation.

Step 2: Use photon-energy dependence to separate surface and bulk contributions
Why changing photon energy helps
Changing photon energy changes the photoelectron’s sensitivity to out-of-plane crystal momentum. A state with three-dimensional bulk dispersion can move in energy or momentum as the sampled out-of-plane momentum changes. A truly two-dimensional surface state should show little intrinsic dispersion in that direction, although its intensity can vary strongly. Vacuum-ultraviolet and soft-X-ray photon-energy-dependent ARPES are established ways to compare these behaviors, as reviewed in the 2019 ARPES review.
A practical photon-energy series
- Choose a fixed in-plane momentum cut and acquire spectra over a photon-energy range that samples several out-of-plane momenta.
- Keep temperature, polarization, analyzer geometry, sample orientation and normalization procedure documented. If these change, intensity differences cannot be assigned solely to dimensionality.
- Repeat the series at symmetry-related momenta and, when possible, on more than one freshly prepared surface.
- Track peak energy and momentum, not just brightness. Plot the feature as a function of the inferred out-of-plane momentum while retaining the raw spectra.
| Observed behavior across photon energy | More consistent with | Required qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Peak position remains nearly fixed while intensity changes | A surface-like or otherwise weakly three-dimensional state | Matrix elements can modulate intensity; lack of visible dispersion is not proof of surface localization. |
| Peak disperses periodically or systematically with photon energy | A bulk-derived state with out-of-plane dispersion | Final-state assumptions and the momentum conversion must be checked. |
| Feature appears only at selected photon energies | A matrix-element enhancement or suppression | Absence at another energy does not mean the state is absent. |
Surface and bulk bands can overlap in the same energy–momentum window. Photon-energy dependence therefore narrows the possibilities; it does not by itself label a state topological. Surface termination, reconstruction and escape depth also affect the spectrum.

Step 3: Measure spin polarization with SARPES
What the spin detector adds
Spin-integrated ARPES sums electrons of opposite spin and cannot directly report a spin polarization. SARPES routes selected photoelectrons to a spin analyzer. Common detector families include Mott detectors, which use spin-dependent scattering at high atomic number targets, and very-low-energy electron diffraction (VLEED) detectors, which use spin-dependent reflection from a magnetized target. The detector measures an asymmetry that is converted into a polarization component using a calibration factor and a defined analyzing axis; the methods and geometry are detailed in the 2021 Physical Review B paper.
Collect a defensible spin measurement
- First acquire a high-statistics spin-integrated map and select the energy–momentum region to analyze. Spin detection sacrifices count rate, so an unfocused exploratory scan is inefficient.
- Define the detector’s longitudinal and, where available, transverse spin axes relative to the sample momentum, mirror plane and crystallographic directions.
- Measure detector asymmetries for the same band at opposite momenta and along symmetry-related cuts. Reverse the sample or detector geometry when the instrument permits; a genuine signal should transform as required by the symmetry, while many instrumental offsets will not.
- Apply the detector’s Sherman function or equivalent effective analyzing power, background subtraction and efficiency correction. State calibration uncertainty and whether the reported polarization is one component or a vector reconstruction.
- Check that the energy and momentum windows do not mix unresolved bands with different spin character. Compare spin-up and spin-down spectra with the spin-integrated spectrum.
What SARPES can and cannot prove
A reproducible momentum-dependent polarization demonstrates the spin character of the detected photoelectrons under the stated geometry. It can distinguish two branches that are unresolved in spin-integrated intensity and test a predicted spin texture. It does not automatically prove that the band is topological: spin polarization can occur in ordinary spin–orbit-coupled bands, at a surface with broken symmetry, or through a photoemission matrix element. Conversely, a small measured polarization can result from finite resolution, domains, overlapping bands or an unfavorable detector axis.
State the magnetization or Néel-vector domain condition whenever it is known. Antiferromagnetic domains can produce opposite or differently oriented signals in a beam spot, reducing the net polarization even when each domain has a strong local texture.
Step 4: Interpret splitting through magnetic and crystal symmetry
Why antiferromagnets require a symmetry analysis
Whether bands are degenerate depends on the combined operations that remain after magnetic order develops—not simply on the presence of moments. Translation combined with time reversal, inversion, mirror operations and nonsymmorphic symmetries can protect or lift degeneracies at particular momenta. A spin splitting that is allowed along one direction may be forbidden along another. The size and sign can also change when the antiferromagnetic order parameter or domain changes.
The 2026 review Symmetry-driven spin splitting in altermagnets: an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy perspective surveys ARPES, SARPES and circular-dichroism ARPES in this setting: Nano Convergence (2026). It also discusses debated or developing assignments rather than presenting every candidate as settled.

Separate three levels of claim
- Symmetry-allowed: a magnetic space-group analysis and calculation permit a momentum-dependent splitting.
- Observed separation: ARPES resolves two branches or a gap larger than the experimental uncertainty.
- Spin-resolved splitting: SARPES links the branches to opposite or otherwise distinct spin polarization under a calibrated geometry.
Only the third statement is a direct spin measurement, and even it does not establish a nonzero topological invariant. A rigorous paper connects all three levels to the same crystallographic direction, magnetic phase, surface termination and calculation.

Current discussion includes RuO2 as a debated candidate and reports involving KV2Se2O, Rb1−δV2Te2O, MnTe, CrSb and MnTe2. These compounds illustrate why a claim must specify the compound, order, momentum direction and measurement. The 2026 review does not turn a single spectrum into universal proof, and an independent replication record is not established here. Use “reported,” “consistent with” or “proposed” unless the complete evidence supports a stronger statement.
Step 5: Build a topology case instead of declaring it from one feature
Evidence for a surface state
A candidate topological surface state is more persuasive when several observations agree: it is confined to the surface in photon-energy scans, connects bulk-band projections in the expected way, survives across equivalent cleaves or terminations as predicted, and follows a dispersion calculated for the measured magnetic symmetry. A state inside a projected bulk gap is suggestive but not sufficient; trivial surface resonances can occupy the same region.
Evidence for a magnetic topological state
For an antiferromagnet, compare the measured bands with calculations using the experimentally established magnetic structure, not a nonmagnetic or incorrectly oriented model. Test whether a gap, crossing, or surface connectivity is protected by the relevant magnetic symmetry. If the proposed phase changes when the order parameter rotates, measure or calculate that dependence. Circular-dichroism ARPES may provide additional orbital or chiral contrast, but dichroism is also matrix-element dependent and is not a standalone topological invariant.
| Claim | Minimum useful evidence | Why a stronger claim may fail |
|---|---|---|
| “The bands are spin split.” | Resolved separation plus calibrated SARPES showing distinct spin polarization | Unresolved bands, domains or structural splitting can mimic separation. |
| “The feature is a surface state.” | Weak out-of-plane dispersion, controlled photon-energy series and surface-sensitive consistency | Matrix elements and final states can imitate two-dimensional behavior. |
| “The material is topological.” | Symmetry-appropriate calculations, surface/bulk comparison and a set of mutually consistent measurements | One crossing, gap or spin texture does not determine a topological invariant. |
Quantum oscillations: a complementary Fermi-surface test
What is measured
In a sufficiently clean metal and high magnetic field, Landau quantization produces oscillations in quantities such as electrical resistance, conductivity, magnetization or other thermodynamic responses. The oscillation frequency is related to an extremal cross-sectional area of the Fermi surface perpendicular to the field. Temperature and field dependence can provide effective-mass and scattering information.

Quantum oscillations therefore test bulk Fermiology, complementing the momentum-resolved but surface-sensitive nature of photoemission. They are especially valuable when ARPES access is limited by cleave quality or when a three-dimensional pocket needs to be mapped through field-angle rotation.
Why field orientation and pocket geometry matter
Rotate the magnetic field through crystallographic directions and compare the observed frequencies with calculated pockets. Closely spaced or touching pockets can produce interference, beating and phase shifts. Magnetic breakdown can connect orbits at high field. A Berry-phase extraction depends on the correct Landau-fan indexing, dimensionality, Zeeman terms, chemical-potential motion and symmetry class. The review Fermiology of Topological Metals explains why oscillation phase and waveform cannot be interpreted without these conditions: Annual Review of Condensed Matter Physics (2023).
| Quantum-oscillation check | Question it addresses | Interpretive hazard |
|---|---|---|
| Frequency versus field angle | Does the inferred pocket shape match the proposed Fermi surface? | Multiple pockets or changing chemical potential can obscure a simple angular law. |
| Temperature dependence | What effective mass is consistent with the oscillation amplitude? | Mass extraction is model dependent and requires a reliable temperature range. |
| Phase or Landau fan | Is a Berry-phase-related offset plausible? | Zeeman splitting, dimensionality, indexing and trivial phase shifts can produce similar offsets. |
| Beating or additional frequencies | Are nearby orbits, breakdown paths or multiple domains present? | Assigning one frequency to one pocket without testing alternatives can be wrong. |
Use oscillations as an independent constraint on the bulk Fermi surface, then compare with ARPES and magnetic-structure calculations. Do not call a single frequency or phase a universal topological signature.

- Define the claim. Decide whether the target is band separation, spin texture, a surface state, a bulk crossing or a topological invariant. Each requires different controls.
- Characterize the magnetic state. Establish ordering temperature, propagation vector, domain state and moment orientation with appropriate structural or magnetic measurements before assigning symmetry.
- Map bands with spin-integrated ARPES. Acquire Fermi-surface maps and dispersions over symmetry-related cuts, recording all experimental parameters.
- Repeat versus photon energy. Track out-of-plane dispersion and intensity changes to separate bulk-derived and surface-like contributions.
- Add SARPES at decisive momenta. Measure the spin components predicted to change across the proposed splitting, with detector calibration and geometry documented.
- Compare with symmetry-constrained calculations. Use the measured lattice, magnetic order, termination and experimental resolution; test alternative domain and surface models.
- Cross-check bulk fermiology. If the material is metallic and sufficiently clean, measure quantum oscillations over field angle and analyze all resolvable frequencies.
- Report uncertainty and alternatives. Show raw and processed spectra, calibration details, sample conditions, domain considerations and reasons competing explanations are excluded or remain possible.
Common failure modes and how to correct them
A visible doublet is called spin splitting
Problem: The two peaks could be structural, orbital, bilayer or domain related. Correction: Check symmetry-equivalent cuts, temperature and order-parameter dependence, then use calibrated SARPES to test spin character.
A nondispersing feature is called a topological surface state
Problem: Matrix elements can hide bulk dispersion, and trivial surface resonances can be two dimensional. Correction: Perform a photon-energy series, compare terminations where possible and test calculated surface connectivity.

Zero SARPES polarization is interpreted as zero spin texture
Problem: Finite resolution, overlapping bands, domain averaging or an insensitive detector axis can cancel the signal. Correction: change momentum and detector axes, improve spectral separation, reverse geometry and quantify the instrumental polarization limit.
A Berry phase is extracted from one oscillation trace
Problem: Incorrect indexing, Zeeman effects, pocket interference or magnetic breakdown can shift the apparent phase. Correction: rotate the field, resolve all frequencies, model the waveform and state the symmetry and pocket assumptions.
Intensity changes are treated as band motion
Problem: Photon-energy and polarization matrix elements alter brightness without changing dispersion. Correction: track fitted peak positions, retain raw maps and vary only one experimental parameter at a time when possible.
What a publication-quality result should contain
- A crystallographic coordinate system, sample face, magnetic phase and domain information.
- Photon energy, polarization, incidence and analyzer geometry, temperature, energy and momentum resolution.
- Raw ARPES and SARPES data alongside processing steps and detector calibration.
- Photon-energy-dependent maps with the momentum-conversion assumptions stated.
- Spin-polarization axes, analyzing power, background treatment and uncertainty.
- Calculations using the measured magnetic structure, with surface termination and broadening matched to the experiment.
- For quantum oscillations, field range, orientation, background subtraction, frequency extraction and the pocket model used for any phase claim.
- Explicit wording that distinguishes observation, consistency with a model and proof of a topological invariant.
Following this hierarchy keeps the central logic intact: ARPES locates the bands, photon-energy dependence tests their dimensional character, SARPES measures the spin of detected electrons, symmetry explains which splitting is allowed, and quantum oscillations constrain the bulk Fermi surface. Topology is the conclusion of the combined, model-checked evidence—not the automatic label attached to one spectrum.
