To measure noise at home, use a sound-level meter or a phone app, keep the microphone position consistent, take several readings during representative conditions, and record the time, location, source, duration, weighting (dBA, dBC or dBZ) and metric (instantaneous, maximum or average such as LAeq). A single number describes one measurement, not your total exposure, a health diagnosis or proof that a home violates a noise law.

What a decibel reading tells you

A decibel (dB) is a logarithmic way to express sound pressure level. Because the scale is logarithmic, a 10 dB increase represents a tenfold increase in sound intensity, although people do not perceive every 10 dB change as exactly twice as loud. The number on a meter is meaningful only when you know how it was measured.

A sound-level meter measures the intensity of sound at a particular point and moment. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) describes this as measuring sound intensity “at a given moment”. A changing room can therefore show 48 dB one second and 72 dB the next. That is not a contradiction; it is a record of changing sound.

Understand dBA, dBC and dBZ before comparing readings

A-weighting (dBA)

A-weighting reduces the contribution of very low and very high frequencies to approximate the sensitivity of human hearing at moderate levels. It is common in hearing-exposure guidance, including NIOSH recommendations. When people casually say “the room is 60 decibels,” they often mean an A-weighted reading, but you should verify the meter’s setting rather than assume it.

C-weighting (dBC)

C-weighting includes substantially more low-frequency sound. It can reveal bass, machinery vibration or music energy that an A-weighted reading may under-represent. A dBC value is not interchangeable with a dBA value; record both the letter and the number if you use both.

Z-weighting (dBZ)

Z-weighting is intended to be essentially flat across the measured frequency range. It is useful when you want the instrument to apply minimal frequency correction, but it still does not make a dBZ result directly comparable with dBA or dBC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the weighting letter belongs beside every number

Write “54 dBA,” not simply “54 dB.” Two readings with the same numeric value but different weighting can represent different frequency content. Comparing a dBA reading from one day with a dBC reading from another can create a false trend.

Choose the right way to measure noise

Option Best use Limits
Phone sound-level app Quick screening and repeated comparisons Microphone and app accuracy vary; the NIOSH app is iOS-only and is not a compliance substitute
Handheld sound-level meter Repeatable spot readings with a dedicated device Accuracy class, calibration, weighting and measurement method matter
Noise dosimeter Accumulated exposure while a person moves It is a specialized exposure tool and is unnecessary for casual room checks
Professional acoustic or noise survey Consequential, formal or complex measurement Requires a qualified provider and a method suited to the question

When a phone app is enough

An app is practical when you need to compare your bedroom with the living room, check whether a fan is louder on one speed, or document a recurring pattern before deciding what to do next. Use the same phone, app, position and settings for every comparison. Different phones have different microphones, signal processing and automatic gain behavior, so a result from one handset should not be treated as a laboratory measurement or compared directly with a result from another.

When to buy or borrow a handheld meter

A dedicated meter is the straightforward physical choice for repeatable spot measurements. Look for a stated accuracy class, selectable weighting, a response setting and a calibration procedure. Before relying on the result, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and check whether the meter requires acoustic calibration. A meter without a known class or calibration history may still show useful relative changes, but its absolute number deserves caution.

When a dosimeter is the better instrument

A dosimeter is worn or placed near a person and accumulates exposure while that person moves between sources. OSHA explains why a series of spot readings may be needed when exposure changes and distinguishes a sound-level meter from a dosimeter in its monitoring appendix. A dosimeter is usually unnecessary for a one-minute check of a stationary room, but it is the appropriate type of instrument when the question is “What did this person experience over a shift or day?”

When to hire a professional

Use a qualified acoustic or noise professional for a legal complaint, a workplace decision, a building-design dispute, a suspected low-frequency problem or a costly soundproofing decision. The provider should explain the measurement method, equipment calibration, locations, time window, weather or building conditions and the metric used in the report. A professional survey cannot be replaced by a screenshot from a phone app when the result has significant financial or legal consequences.

How to measure noise at home: a repeatable procedure

1. Define the question first

Decide whether you are checking a momentary disturbance, a recurring appliance, a sleep environment, a neighbor’s music or your personal exposure. “How loud is the room right now?” calls for a spot reading. “How much noise do I experience while working?” calls for a time-based exposure metric. The question determines the instrument and the duration.

2. Select one measurement position

Choose the place that represents the experience you want to understand: the pillow position for sleep, the desk chair for work, or a specified point near a window for outside noise. Keep the microphone at the same height, orientation and distance from walls, furniture and your body for every repeat. Do not hold the phone directly against clothing or cover its microphone with a case or hand.

3. Make the room conditions explicit

Write down whether windows and doors are open, whether heating or air conditioning is running, and whether people, pets or appliances are present. For an intermittent source, note the source state (“refrigerator compressor on,” “traffic passing,” or “music bass pulse”). If you are comparing days, reproduce these conditions as closely as practical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Select and record the weighting

Use dBA when you are following ordinary hearing-exposure guidance, but do not switch silently between A, C and Z weighting. If low-frequency sound is part of the complaint, take an additional dBC reading and label it. Keep the weighting fixed during a comparison.

5. Choose the response and metric

A fast response can show short changes, while a slower response produces a steadier display for fluctuating sound. If your instrument offers LAeq, use it for an average over a defined interval instead of treating a bouncing instantaneous display as the whole exposure. Record the interval, such as “LAeq, 15 minutes,” rather than writing only the number.

6. Take several readings

For a steady source, take repeated readings after the display has settled. For an intermittent source, measure long enough to capture representative quiet and loud periods, and log when the events occur. Take measurements at the same position on more than one occasion if the problem varies by time of day. One unusually quiet or loud moment is not a reliable description of the room.

8. Repeat before drawing a conclusion

Repeat the measurement at the times that matter: bedtime, early morning, appliance cycles or the period when a neighbor’s activity occurs. Look for a consistent pattern rather than a single peak. If moving the microphone by a small amount changes the result substantially, the room may have strong reflections or a localized source; document the exact position and consider professional advice.

What the common meter metrics mean

Instantaneous level

This is the value displayed at a particular moment. It is useful for finding a source or comparing two operating modes, but it says little about exposure unless you also record how long the sound lasts.

Maximum level

Maximum is the highest value recorded during the selected interval, subject to the instrument’s response and sampling behavior. It can identify a door slam or passing vehicle, but one maximum cannot describe the typical room level.

Peak level

Peak is intended to capture very brief transients. It may use a different detector from the ordinary sound-level display. Treat the peak as a separate metric and do not substitute it for an average.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

LAeq

LAeq is an A-weighted equivalent continuous sound level over a stated period. It compresses a changing sound into one energy-based average. Always provide the interval; “LAeq 48 dBA” is incomplete without saying whether the interval was one minute, one hour or an entire night.

Time-weighted average (TWA)

TWA summarizes exposure over a defined reference period. Occupational instruments may calculate it using workplace exchange-rate and criterion settings. A TWA from a workplace dosimeter should not be presented as a residential comfort score.

Dose

Dose expresses accumulated exposure against the instrument’s selected criterion. The meaning depends on the standard and settings used. Check the instrument documentation before interpreting a percentage as a universal risk threshold.

Using the NIOSH Sound Level Meter app responsibly

The free NIOSH Sound Level Meter app is currently listed for iOS by CDC/NIOSH. The current CDC/NIOSH listing describes A-, C- and Z-weighted measurements and metrics including LAeq, maximum, peak, TWA and dose. It also provides technical accuracy information and was listed as updated August 11, 2026.

NIOSH’s published laboratory work reported a mean difference within ±2 dB from a reference Type 1 meter. With an external calibrated microphone, the bulletin reported agreement within ±1 dB over 65–95 dB SPL in laboratory testing. Those results describe the tested app, hardware and conditions; they do not mean every phone or every sound-level app has the same performance.

NIOSH explicitly says the app is not intended to replace a professional sound-level meter or noise dosimeter and is not for compliance measurements. Its 2017 bulletin recommends an external microphone that can be calibrated with an acoustical calibrator when improved accuracy is needed. Use the app as a screening and comparison tool, keep the phone setup consistent, and escalate consequential measurements to calibrated equipment.

How to interpret common figures without misusing them

Below 80 dB in WHO safe-listening guidance

The World Health Organization states that “Sound levels below 80dB are unlikely to cause hearing damage” in its safe-listening Q&A. Read this as a population-level safe-listening statement, not a guarantee for every person, sound pattern or duration. It does not determine whether a bedroom is quiet enough for sleep or whether a local authority will consider a sound a nuisance. See the WHO guidance for the original context.

85 dBA over eight hours in NIOSH guidance

NIOSH recommends an occupational exposure limit of 85 dBA over an eight-hour workday. NIOSH advises precautions such as reducing noise, limiting exposure or using appropriate protection at or above that level. This is a workplace framework, not a universal residential limit and not a declaration that a home reading is illegal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

OSHA workplace values

OSHA’s workplace rules use an 85 dBA eight-hour time-weighted average as a hearing-conservation trigger and a 90 dBA eight-hour time-weighted average in its permissible-exposure framework. These requirements apply to covered workplaces. The OSHA noise page should not be used to infer a home ordinance.

Why one threshold cannot answer every home question

Hearing injury, sleep disruption, annoyance, speech interference and a local nuisance rule are different questions. They use different time windows, metrics and legal tests. A single high reading may matter for a short impulse, while a lower level that persists all night may matter more for sleep. Personal sensitivity also varies.

What to do when sound is persistently loud

Start with the source: reduce its volume, increase distance, close or improve the barrier between you and the source, or schedule the activity for a less disruptive time. When loud sound cannot be reduced, use properly fitted earplugs or earmuffs and limit the time spent in the sound. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders notes that individual sensitivity varies and recommends reducing volume, moving away or using hearing protection.

Hearing protection reduces exposure to the wearer; it does not measure the room and does not prove that the underlying source meets a legal standard. If you develop ringing, muffled hearing, pain, dizziness or persistent difficulty understanding speech, stop the exposure and seek medical advice.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Home noise, sleep and neighbor complaints

For sleep or comfort

Measure at the sleeping or resting position, during the hours of concern, and use a time-based average when the sound fluctuates. Note peaks separately because a single event can wake someone even when the overnight average is modest. A meter cannot diagnose insomnia, stress or another health condition; it documents the acoustic conditions that may be contributing.

For a conversation with a neighbor or landlord

Keep a neutral log with dates, times, source descriptions and repeat measurements from a consistent position. Share the pattern rather than presenting one dramatic peak as proof of wrongdoing. Ask the relevant local authority what measurement protocol it accepts before paying for equipment or commissioning a report.

For a legal or regulatory complaint

Residential noise limits differ by jurisdiction and may depend on time of day, source, zoning, the receiving property, frequency content and an approved measurement method. The occupational figures from NIOSH and OSHA do not establish a residential legal limit. Check the applicable ordinance or agency and use a qualified professional if the procedure requires calibrated equipment, certified reporting or an unattended long-term survey.

Common measurement mistakes and fixes

  • Relying on one reading: repeat measurements during representative conditions and capture both typical levels and events.
  • Leaving out the weighting: write dBA, dBC or dBZ beside every number.
  • Comparing different metrics: do not compare an instantaneous dBA value with an LAeq, TWA or dose as if they were equivalent.
  • Changing the position: use a marked listening point and keep microphone height and orientation consistent.
  • Standing too close to the source: measure where the person experiences the sound unless the investigation specifically concerns the source itself.
  • Blocking the microphone: remove obstructions and keep your body from reflecting or shielding the microphone.
  • Treating an app as certified evidence: use a calibrated meter or qualified survey for formal decisions.
  • Ignoring low-frequency sound: add a labeled dBC or dBZ reading when bass or vibration is central to the complaint.
  • Assuming a workplace limit is a home limit: keep NIOSH and OSHA figures in their occupational context.
  • Buying a meter without checking its specifications: confirm accuracy class, calibration options, weighting, response settings and the metric definitions.

A practical decision guide

  1. You need a quick comparison: use one phone app, one fixed position and repeated dBA readings. Log conditions and treat the result as screening information.
  2. You need repeatable spot numbers: use a handheld meter with a stated accuracy class and follow its calibration procedure.
  3. You need a person’s exposure over time: use a dosimeter and interpret its TWA or dose according to the selected occupational standard.
  4. You need evidence for a dispute, regulation or major building work: hire a qualified acoustic professional and confirm the receiving authority’s required method before measuring.

Questions your log should answer

Before you treat a result as meaningful, check that your notes answer these questions:

  • What source produced the sound?
  • Was it steady, intermittent or impulsive?
  • Where was the microphone and how was it oriented?
  • Which weighting and response setting were used?
  • Was the value instantaneous, maximum, peak, LAeq, TWA or dose?
  • How long was the measurement?
  • Were doors, windows, ventilation and appliances in their normal states?
  • Is the instrument or app suitable for the decision you are making?

Those details turn a bare number into a reproducible observation. They also show when the next step is not another phone reading but a calibrated instrument, a professional survey or medical advice.
