Measure hydrogen in a sealed, characterized photoreactor with a calibrated gas-analysis method—most commonly gas chromatography with a thermal conductivity detector (GC-TCD)—and calibrate that analytical system under conditions that reproduce the actual reactor, electrolyte, pressure and sampling path. Record illumination and temperature, account for hydrogen dissolved in the liquid, and run dark and no-catalyst controls.
If the result is meant to demonstrate overall water splitting, quantify oxygen as well as hydrogen. A hydrogen peak alone proves only that hydrogen was detected. It does not prove that water supplied the hydrogen, because an added donor can undergo dehydrogenation while water serves as a proton shuttle.
First define what you are claiming
“Hydrogen production without sacrificial donors” can describe two different experiments. In a donor-free overall-water-splitting experiment, water is the intended source of both hydrogen and oxygen, and the photocatalyst must provide the oxidation and reduction chemistry needed for both products. In a hydrogen-evolution experiment containing an organic donor, alcohol, amine or another oxidizable additive, the donor may supply the atoms that become hydrogen. Detecting H2 in the second experiment is not evidence of overall water splitting.

For a donor-free claim, the minimum defensible product assessment is a quantitative hydrogen measurement plus a quantitative oxygen measurement. Compare the amounts with the stoichiometric relationship expected for water splitting rather than treating the H2 signal as a complete reaction analysis.
Use an analytical setup that matches the reactor
GC-TCD is a common choice because it can quantify permanent gases from a reactor headspace. The detector, column, carrier-gas arrangement and sampling path must nevertheless be suitable for the expected species and signal. There is no single detector configuration or universal detection limit that applies to every photocatalytic reactor.
| Analytical need | Appropriate approach | What must be demonstrated |
|---|---|---|
| Routine H2 and O2 quantification | Gas chromatography with a thermal conductivity detector is commonly used. | Calibrate with known gas additions in the actual reactor and validate the response over the expected concentration range. |
| Isotopically labeled gases | Mass spectrometry is required when the measurement must distinguish labeled gas species. | Use an isotope-capable method and a calibration procedure for the labeled species; a standard GC-TCD cannot detect labeled gases as described in the DOE-hosted review. |
| Other gas-analysis arrangements | Possible when the detector and sampling line are appropriate for the analyte and pressure. | Establish selectivity, repeatability, calibration behavior and a validated range for the specific configuration. |
| Very low-pressure or unusual headspace systems | A sampling design matched to the reactor pressure rather than an automatic syringe choice. | Show that sampling does not draw air into the system or lose a material fraction of the gas. |
The comparison should cover analytes, calibration under the actual liquid and reactor conditions, pressure and headspace compatibility, sensitivity over the expected rate, and the complexity and cost of the sampling arrangement. Published sources do not establish one universal instrument configuration or numerical detection limit.
Build and document a characterized photoreactor
Use a sealed reactor with a gas-tight septum or another demonstrated gas-tight closure. Before starting a run, characterize the variables that determine the volume and composition of the gas phase. Report them so another laboratory can reproduce the measurement.
Record the reactor geometry
- Reactor type and shape.
- Total internal volume and liquid volume.
- Headspace volume after the electrolyte and catalyst are loaded.
- Material and dimensions of the illumination window.
- Light direction and the location of the illuminated region.
- Stirring or mixing arrangement, if used.
- Septum, valve and transfer-line configuration.
Geometry changes the illuminated area, optical path, gas-liquid interfacial area and headspace volume. A rate reported per gram of catalyst can therefore differ substantially from a rate obtained in another reactor even when the catalyst is nominally identical.
Control the atmosphere and pressure
State whether the reactor was evacuated, purged with an inert gas, or filled with another defined atmosphere before illumination. Record the starting pressure and how pressure was monitored. Hydrogen can dissolve in the liquid, and gas evolution can change the pressure and the partitioning between dissolved and headspace gas. A headspace concentration is not automatically the total amount produced.

Control illumination and temperature
Photocatalytic rates depend on the light delivered to the sample and on temperature. At minimum, report:
Recommended Free Tools
- Light source type and spectral range or wavelength band.
- Intensity at the sample position, with the measurement method and units.
- Illuminated area and whether the entire suspension or only a window was exposed.
- Source-to-reactor distance.
- Temperature before illumination and during the run.
- Whether the reactor was actively cooled or heated.
The 2022 analytical tutorial and later benchmarking work identify reactor geometry, irradiation-source distance and intensity, and temperature as major causes of poor cross-laboratory comparability. Keep these conditions constant between control and catalyst runs, and measure them at the sample rather than relying only on the lamp manufacturer’s rating.
Calibrate the gas measurement in the real system
A calibration made on a different vessel or with a dry gas standard may not transfer unchanged to a photocatalytic suspension. The liquid, dissolved gases, headspace volume, septum, transfer line, pressure and temperature all influence the amount that reaches the detector.
Make a system-specific calibration curve
- Assemble the same reactor, septum, tubing, valve and sampling hardware used for the photocatalytic run.
- Add the same electrolyte and liquid volume. Include the catalyst if it can adsorb, react with or otherwise remove hydrogen; if it is omitted, explain why that omission does not affect the response.
- Seal the reactor gas-tight and establish the same starting atmosphere, pressure and temperature used in the experiment.
- Introduce known quantities of hydrogen through a calibrated gas-delivery procedure. Use several levels spanning the expected sample response rather than relying on a single standard.
- Take samples through the same transfer path and with the same timing used for illuminated runs.
- Fit the detector response to the introduced amount or concentration, inspect residuals and repeat selected points to test repeatability.
- Run a blank calibration check during the measurement series to identify drift or leaks.
“Calibration curve is necessary for each particular system e.g. reactor, conditions.”

Include oxygen calibration when making a splitting claim
Calibrate the oxygen channel or analytical method separately. Hydrogen and oxygen can have different detector responses, retention behavior and sampling losses. A single hydrogen calibration cannot establish the oxygen amount or the H2:O2 relationship.
Design sampling around gas-liquid partitioning and pressure
Hydrogen is not confined to the headspace. Some can remain dissolved in the liquid, and the dissolved fraction changes with temperature, pressure, agitation, electrolyte composition and the amount of gas already present. If you quantify only a headspace sample, describe the result as headspace hydrogen unless you have a validated mass balance or partitioning correction.
Why a syringe may fail at low pressure
A 2024 best-practices review cautions that a standard gas-tight syringe can be unsuitable in a low-pressure system: air may enter the syringe before the sample is transferred. That contamination can create a false background or dilute the sample. The syringe is not a universal solution simply because it is gas-tight under positive pressure.

Choose and validate the transfer path
- Match the sampler, valve and line volume to the reactor pressure and headspace volume.
- Minimize dead volume and record the line material, length and internal volume.
- Check for leaks with a blank or pressure-hold test before illumination.
- Use a transfer sequence that prevents ambient air from being drawn into a sub-atmospheric reactor.
- Keep sampling time, withdrawal volume and interval consistent between standards, blanks and catalyst runs.
- Determine whether repeated withdrawals materially change reactor pressure or headspace composition.
If total production is required, define how dissolved hydrogen is handled. Options include a validated liquid-plus-gas mass balance, an equilibration protocol demonstrated not to create or lose hydrogen, or a method that directly measures both phases. Do not silently equate a single headspace concentration with total hydrogen.
Run controls that reveal background signals
At least two controls are essential for interpreting a hydrogen peak:
- Dark control: the complete reactor, electrolyte and catalyst kept under the same temperature and sampling schedule but without illumination. It reveals thermal, catalytic or handling-related gas formation.
- No-photocatalyst control: the electrolyte and reactor exposed to the same light and temperature without catalyst. It reveals photolysis, window or impurity effects.
Additional controls may be needed when the system contains a cocatalyst, dissolved metal, pH modifier or an organic additive. Use the same gas-tight hardware and sampling procedure for every control. Report blank responses alongside illuminated runs rather than subtracting an unexplained background after the fact.

For an overall-splitting claim, quantify H2 and O2 and assess whether their amounts are consistent with the water-splitting stoichiometry. A roughly two-to-one hydrogen-to-oxygen relationship is a necessary consistency check, not a substitute for identifying all possible gas sources. Report the individual amounts, analytical uncertainty and sampling times so a reader can judge the ratio rather than seeing only a rounded value.
Hydrogen and oxygen may be consumed or retained by the catalyst, cocatalyst, reactor walls or liquid. A deviation from the expected ratio therefore requires investigation, not automatic reclassification as successful or failed water splitting. Check leaks, dissolved-gas retention, detector calibration, overlapping peaks, dark activity and oxygen loss reactions before drawing a mechanistic conclusion.
When isotope tracing is needed
If the scientific question is whether hydrogen atoms came from water rather than an additive, isotopic labeling can provide evidence that ordinary H2/O2 quantification cannot. The DOE-hosted review notes that a standard GC-TCD cannot detect labeled gases and that mass spectrometry is needed for that task. Plan the isotope experiment as a separate analytical method with its own standards, transfer validation and interpretation limits.

Do not compare rates from different laboratories without the setup information that controls them. The 2026 ACS Energy Letters perspective examined 157 research articles from the previous five years and used the sample to discuss incomplete reporting and the experimental factors that complicate comparison. That number describes the review’s article set; it is not a universal performance statistic or a benchmark production rate.
Use a decision table when selecting the method
| Question | If the answer is yes | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Do you need only routine H2 and O2 amounts? | The gases are unlabeled and the expected signals fit the detector. | Validate GC-TCD or another gas method with reactor-specific standards. |
| Must you prove the source of hydrogen atoms? | Water and an additive could both supply protons or hydrogen. | Consider isotope labeling and mass spectrometry; ordinary H2 detection is insufficient. |
| Is the reactor at low pressure? | A syringe could draw air before transfer. | Use a pressure-compatible valve or transfer system and demonstrate blank integrity. |
| Is a large fraction of gas likely to dissolve? | The liquid is deep, cold, pressurized or poorly mixed. | Measure or model both phases and state the partitioning method. |
| Are you comparing catalysts or laboratories? | Geometry, light, temperature or sampling differs. | Report all setup variables and avoid interpreting normalized rates as intrinsically comparable without qualification. |
Troubleshoot misleading or inconsistent results
| Symptom | Likely contributors | Checks and corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrogen appears in the dark control. | Thermal reaction, catalyst impurity, leak-related contamination or residual gas. | Repeat the leak and blank checks, verify temperature, purge consistently and identify whether the catalyst or electrolyte is responsible. |
| Hydrogen appears only in the illuminated no-catalyst control. | Direct photolysis, window contamination or light-driven chemistry in the electrolyte. | Characterize the electrolyte and window under the same spectrum and temperature before assigning the signal to the photocatalyst. |
| Replicates vary widely. | Unequal suspension mixing, changing headspace pressure, inconsistent sampling or lamp drift. | Standardize stirring, sampling time, pressure recording and intensity measurement; inspect the calibration check sequence. |
| The detector response is lower than expected. | Dissolved hydrogen, adsorption, transfer-line loss, leak or a calibration made in a different geometry. | Repeat calibration in the loaded reactor, test the transfer path and account for the liquid phase. |
| The H2:O2 ratio is far from the expected relationship. | Oxygen consumption, gas dissolution, selective sampling loss, peak interference or an incorrect reaction claim. | Recheck both calibrations, quantify each phase where possible, inspect controls and do not call the result overall splitting until the discrepancy is explained. |
| A low-pressure syringe sample contains air. | The syringe drew ambient gas before it was connected or before pressure equalization. | Replace the transfer procedure with pressure-compatible hardware and demonstrate a clean blank. |
Report the experiment so it can be reproduced
A complete methods section should allow another laboratory to reconstruct both the chemistry and the measurement. Include the following items:
- Photocatalyst identity, loading, particle treatment and cocatalyst, if any.
- Water source, electrolyte composition, pH and every added substance, including potential sacrificial donors.
- Reactor material, shape, total volume, liquid volume, headspace, window and closure.
- Initial atmosphere and pressure, mixing method and temperature profile.
- Light source, spectral range, intensity at the sample, illuminated area, distance and exposure time.
- Detector, column or analytical configuration, carrier gas and sampling hardware.
- Calibration gas, reactor-matched calibration procedure, number of points, response fit and quality checks.
- Sampling interval, withdrawn volume, pressure behavior and treatment of dissolved gas.
- Dark, no-catalyst and any additional controls, with their measured responses.
- Hydrogen and oxygen amounts, rates, units, normalization basis, uncertainty and number of independent runs.
State clearly whether the reported number is detected headspace hydrogen or an estimate of total production. For a water-splitting claim, present oxygen data and the H2:O2 comparison in the same results section. If the evidence supports only hydrogen evolution, use that narrower description.
What a defensible conclusion looks like
A strong conclusion links the claim to the measurement: for example, that a calibrated GC-TCD detected hydrogen above the dark and no-catalyst controls under defined illumination, reactor and sampling conditions, while oxygen was measured separately and compared with the expected stoichiometry. If oxygen was not measured, the conclusion should stop at detected hydrogen evolution. If an additive was present, describe the chemistry as donor-assisted and do not present it as proof of overall water splitting.
The central safeguard is alignment: align the reaction claim with the actual chemicals, the calibration with the actual reactor, the sampling method with the actual pressure, and the reported products with the reaction you want to establish. That alignment is more important than choosing a particular brand or assuming that a familiar syringe, detector setting or published rate transfers unchanged to a new system.
