Measure the case’s greatest outside height, width and depth, including wheels and handles when the airline’s rule includes them. Add those three measurements for the total linear dimension, then check your booking and the operating carrier’s current rules for included pieces, size, weight and oversize fees. A hard case is not “airline approved” by appearance alone: the itinerary, fare and carrier determine whether it can travel as checked baggage.

What to measure before you look at an airline limit

Airlines generally assess the case as it will be handed over at the airport, not as a bare shell with removable parts taken off. Start with the case’s greatest outside dimensions:

  • Height: the tallest point when the case is standing normally.
  • Width: the widest side-to-side measurement, including bulges, corner guards and fixed fittings.
  • Depth: the deepest front-to-back measurement, including wheels, hinges, locks and handles if they project beyond the shell.

Use a flexible tape measure for curved cases, or a rigid ruler and a straightedge for a more repeatable measurement. Measure the case closed and latched, with telescoping handles retracted unless the carrier explicitly specifies another position. Do not rely on the manufacturer’s interior capacity or shell-only dimensions.

How to measure a hard case accurately

1. Prepare the case as it will travel

  1. Close every lid, latch and compression mechanism.
  2. Install the wheels, feet, detachable straps and other parts that will remain attached during travel.
  3. Retract pull handles. If an airline’s published rule says handles must be included, measure their furthest fixed or extended projection as that rule describes.
  4. Place the case on a level floor. Keep it empty for the dimensional measurement so its shape is not distorted by an uneven load.

2. Find the greatest height

Stand the case in its normal orientation. Measure from the floor to the highest fixed point. Check both sides: a wheel housing, raised corner or hinge can be taller than the main shell. Record the result in centimetres and inches if your itinerary uses a different unit.

Good sewing tool, accurate tape measuring for sewing, tailoring, body, waist measurement or measuring any curved surface. can provide you accurate measurements, suitable for a seamstress, a crafter, a quilter or whoever just need a flexible measuring tape

3. Find the greatest width

Measure across the widest part at a right angle to the height. Run the tape over protruding latches, side handles and protective rails when they are part of the traveling case. If the case tapers, check the top, middle and bottom rather than measuring only the center.

4. Find the greatest depth

Measure from the furthest front projection to the furthest rear projection. Include wheels, rear hinges and external pockets. A deep equipment case can exceed a limit even when its height and width look typical.

5. Write down a conservative measurement

Record each dimension to the next whole centimetre or inch above your reading. For example, readings of 76.4 × 38.1 × 24.6 cm should be recorded as 77 × 39 × 25 cm for a planning check. Keep the unrounded readings in your notes in case the carrier states a tolerance or asks how you measured.

6. Measure unusual shapes twice

For a rounded, molded or irregular equipment case, make a first pass to identify the widest points, then repeat the measurement with the tape held straight between those points. Do not follow a curve with the tape if the airline is measuring the maximum outside envelope. Measure protruding feet, caster housings and recessed areas separately, and use the largest reading in each direction.

7. Keep a measurement record

Write the date, case configuration, three dimensions, calculated total and packed weight in one note. A photograph with the tape visible can help you reproduce the result after a repair or repacking. If a wheel, handle or protective cover is removed later, record the new configuration rather than assuming the old figures still apply.

Calculate total linear dimensions

A linear-dimension rule is the sum of the three outside measurements, not the length of one side. Use this formula:

Total linear dimensions = height + width + depth

For a case measuring 77 × 39 × 25 cm, the total is 141 cm. The same case is about 30.3 × 15.4 × 9.8 inches, or roughly 55.5 inches in total. Compare the result with the carrier’s stated unit and rounding method.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) describes 158 cm (62 in) as a common checked-baggage maximum where the piece concept applies on certain routes. IATA also says allowances and conditions remain specific to each airline, so 158 cm is a reference point, not a universal entitlement.

When a linear total is not enough

Some policies publish a maximum for each side, a maximum combined dimension, or both. A case can pass a 158 cm total while failing a per-side cap. Conversely, a case may fit the side limits but exceed the combined total. Check the wording for “greatest outside height, width and length,” “overall dimensions,” or “length + width + height” and apply every stated test.

Do not substitute the word “length” for the airline’s definition of each axis. Air Canada, for example, describes maximum linear dimensions using greatest outside height, width and length, with wheels and handles included. If the policy uses a diagram or a particular order, follow that description; adding the same three numbers gives the same total, but identifying the maximum side still matters when separate caps apply.

Check packed weight separately

Dimensions and weight are independent checks. Weigh the closed case after packing the actual equipment, cables, batteries and protective material. Use a luggage scale, a household scale, or a platform scale that can support the complete case. Lift the case only if the scale procedure is safe and repeatable.

Record the packed weight before leaving home and again after any airport repacking. A case that fits the dimensional rule can still incur an overweight charge or be refused if its weight exceeds the fare’s allowance. Keep heavy accessories near the center so the shell does not bulge and change the measured depth.

Compare the case’s own weight with the allowance before choosing a model. Two cases with the same exterior footprint can leave very different amounts of usable weight for equipment. The relevant figure is the complete piece at check-in, not the empty case advertised in a product listing. Leave practical margin for labels, padding or a last-minute accessory rather than planning to the exact limit.

Find the rule that applies to your itinerary

Start with the booking, not a generic search result

  1. Open the airline or travel agency booking and identify the fare family, cabin and route.
  2. Look for the baggage section showing the number of included checked pieces.
  3. Open the carrier’s current checked-baggage policy from that booking or the airline’s official help pages.
  4. Write down the permitted dimensions, weight per piece, additional-piece price and oversize or overweight conditions.
  5. Check whether the allowance is per passenger, per segment or based on the whole ticket.

The Federal Aviation Administration advises passengers to check their airline because baggage restrictions can vary by carrier, type of travel, origin and destination. A policy found for one route or fare should not be applied automatically to another.

Capture the exact wording, not just a headline number. Note whether the page distinguishes standard, excess, oversized and overweight baggage; whether a fee is charged once or in multiple categories; and whether an allowance applies only to a particular cabin or fare. A free checked piece is separate from permission to exceed its size or weight limit.

Confirm the operating carrier

On a codeshare or multi-airline itinerary, identify the airline that actually operates each flight. All Nippon Airways (ANA) notes that another airline’s rules may apply when an itinerary includes a flight operated by another carrier. Your ticket may display one brand while the aircraft and baggage check-in are handled by another.

  • Warm Prompt: When using a retractable black tape measure, if the tape measure extends a long length, you can press the button in the middle to make the tape measure retract quickly, or there will be loud noise.

Check the baggage rule for the first operating carrier and any carrier that operates a later segment. If the booking gives a single allowance, save a copy of the wording and ask the issuing airline which policy controls the checked case. Do this before travel day; airport staff may have limited ability to change a ticket’s baggage conditions.

Write down every flight number and operating airline. If you change a segment, recheck the allowance even when the marketing airline and fare name stay the same. At a connection, ask whether the case is checked through or must be collected and checked again; the applicable policy can matter at each check-in point.

Check fare and route exceptions

Free checked pieces can differ by fare, cabin, loyalty status, direction of travel and destination. A transcontinental, international or partner-operated segment may use a different allowance from a domestic segment on the same brand. Confirm whether a quoted size is the standard limit, an exception for a particular route, or an oversize maximum that carries a fee.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also check the date of travel and the airport where the case enters the system. Airlines can publish seasonal, airport-specific or temporary restrictions. A policy page that appears in a search result may be outdated or may describe a different market, so open the current page linked from your booking and verify the effective conditions.

Published examples: use them as policy illustrations

The following figures are examples from named organizations and carriers, accessed in 2026. They illustrate why you must verify the exact itinerary; they are not interchangeable rules.

Publisher or carrier Published dimension or weight detail How to use it
IATA 158 cm (62 in) total linear dimensions is described as a common checked-bag maximum where the piece concept applies on certain routes. Use as a general reference only; IATA says airline allowances and conditions are airline-specific.
ANA (cited US checked-baggage page) 62 in (158 cm) total linear dimension, including wheels and handle; free allowance varies by fare. Apply only when ANA’s policy governs the ticket and route.
JetBlue Standard checked bags should not exceed 62 in overall dimensions or 50 lb; the page also shows a separate oversized-dimension range. Check the live JetBlue policy for the route, fare and current fees before relying on either threshold.
Air Canada Dimensions use greatest outside height, width and length, including wheels and handles; an oversized maximum of 292 cm (115 in) is listed. Confirm whether the flight and fare accept a case within that maximum and what charge applies.

These figures show why a single number cannot answer every traveler’s question. JetBlue’s cited page treats 62 inches and 50 pounds as separate standard checks, while Air Canada lists a much larger 292-centimetre oversized maximum. Neither figure tells you what another airline, fare or operating carrier will accept. Use the named carrier’s live policy and the itinerary details together.

Decide whether the case is safe to take

Case A: Under the airline’s standard size and weight

If your measured total, each side and packed weight are all within the applicable standard limits, verify that you also have an included checked piece or have purchased one. Keep the measurement record and policy page available in your phone or printed travel folder.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Case B: Over the standard size but within an oversize maximum

Do not assume payment guarantees acceptance. Check whether the carrier allows oversize baggage on your route, whether it must be prepaid, and whether the item is subject to a separate airport or special-handling desk. Confirm the maximum dimensions, weight ceiling and any embargo dates.

Ask whether oversize and overweight charges can be combined, and whether an oversize piece uses one of your included checked-bag slots. Get the answer in writing when possible. A fee schedule does not by itself prove that every flight has capacity for an oversized case.

Case C: Over the stated maximum

Ask the operating carrier about cargo, sports-equipment or special-item procedures before arriving. A hard case that exceeds the airline’s maximum may require a different service, repacking into smaller pieces, or a different case. Never conceal an excess dimension by removing a wheel or handle that will be reattached at the counter.

Case D: The rule is unclear

Contact the carrier with the exact measurements, packed weight, flight numbers and operating airlines. Ask for a written answer identifying the applicable allowance and fees. Keep the case dimensions in the same units used by the agent so there is no conversion dispute.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Measuring the interior: Interior volume says nothing about the outside limit. Re-measure the closed exterior.
  • Ignoring wheels and handles: ANA and Air Canada explicitly include these in their cited measurements. Include them whenever the governing rule does.
  • Adding only two sides: Linear dimensions require height plus width plus depth.
  • Using nominal product dimensions: A listing may describe the shell without casters or fittings. Measure your assembled case.
  • Checking only weight: A light case can still be oversized. Record both the packed weight and every outside dimension.
  • Relying on an old allowance: Airlines can change fees, fare inclusions and route rules. Recheck the current policy after any itinerary change.
  • Checking only the marketing carrier: A codeshare may apply another airline’s baggage rule. Verify the operating carrier for every segment.
  • Rounding down: Rounding a borderline measurement down can create a counter dispute. Plan with the next whole unit above your tape reading.
  • Measuring with a cover you will remove: If a shipping cover, strap or protective shell stays on at handover, include it; if it comes off, document the travel configuration separately.
  • Assuming a fee guarantees transport: Oversize acceptance can still depend on route, maximum dimensions, weight and handling procedures.
  • Forgetting the allowance count: A case can meet size and weight limits yet still be an extra paid piece if the fare includes no checked bag or fewer pieces than you need.

Choosing or modifying a hard case for air travel

Compare cases by published outside dimensions, assembled weight and the features that add projection. A smaller shell with external wheels may have a larger travel footprint than a boxier shell with recessed wheels. Compare the packed case, not just the empty product.

  • Measure the empty case before purchase when possible.
  • Leave margin below the airline’s limit for manufacturing variation, measurement angle and protective wrapping.
  • Prefer recessed or protected fittings only when they do not compromise the equipment’s protection.
  • Check whether the case can be divided into two compliant pieces if your fare permits multiple checked bags.
  • Confirm that locks, batteries, tools and fragile equipment meet separate security and dangerous-goods requirements; dimension compliance does not override those rules.

A flexible tape measure is a useful convenience for checking a molded case, but no particular measuring tool is required. The important result is a reproducible outside measurement. If you are comparing products, place each case in the same closed, assembled configuration and record the three outside dimensions, empty weight and any detachable parts that will travel attached.

When a case is close to a limit, choosing a slightly smaller model may be cheaper and less stressful than relying on an oversize exception. Compare the published exterior footprint with your own measurement, because wheels, handles and corner hardware can make the assembled case larger than a catalog diagram suggests.

24-hour pre-flight checklist

  1. Measure greatest outside height, width and depth with wheels and handles included where required.
  2. Add the three dimensions and record the total in the airline’s unit.
  3. Weigh the packed, closed case.
  4. Confirm the fare’s included checked pieces and any purchased allowance.
  5. Check the current dimension, weight, oversize and excess-baggage rules for every operating carrier.
  6. Verify route-specific, seasonal or airport restrictions and any prepayment requirement.
  7. Save the policy page, booking and any written carrier response offline.
  8. Label the case inside and outside with contact details, and photograph its condition before check-in.
  9. Leave time for repacking, an oversized-baggage desk or a payment queue.
  10. Recheck the latch, wheels, handles and protective wrapping after the final packing change.

What to expect at the airport

At check-in, the agent may weigh the case and place it in a sizing frame or measure it manually. Be prepared to remove a strap or accessory only if the carrier instructs you; do not alter the case in a way that changes its travel configuration. If the case is rejected as oversized, ask whether the issue is a dimension, weight, route restriction or missing allowance. That distinction determines whether paying a fee, repacking, or using a special-handling process can solve it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep fragile gear padded so that repacking does not force the lid open or increase the depth. If you must redistribute contents, recheck the latch, weight and outside dimensions before handing the case back.

These steps do not change the airline’s acceptance decision, but they make a last-minute correction and a claim easier to document.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are total linear dimensions?

Add the case’s greatest outside height, width and depth. For example, 77 × 39 × 25 cm equals 141 cm total. It is not the measurement of one long side.

Do wheels and handles count?

They count whenever the governing airline rule includes them. ANA’s cited US page includes wheels and handle, and Air Canada defines measurements using greatest outside dimensions with wheels and handles included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is 158 cm (62 in) the rule for every airline?

No. IATA describes 158 cm (62 in) as a common reference on certain routes, but says allowances and conditions are airline-specific. The fare, route and operating carrier control.

What does the JetBlue example require?

JetBlue’s cited checked-bag page says standard bags should not exceed 62 inches overall or 50 pounds and lists a separate oversized range. Verify the current JetBlue policy for your route and fare before relying on those figures.

Can a case pass the size test and still be rejected?

Yes. Weight, included-piece allowance, route restrictions, operating-carrier rules and special-handling limits are separate checks. A case within the dimensions may still be overweight or an extra paid piece.

What should I do with a codeshare itinerary?

Identify the airline operating every segment and check which carrier’s baggage policy controls. ANA notes that another airline’s rules may apply when an itinerary includes a flight operated by another carrier.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How should I handle a case over the standard limit?

Check whether the carrier permits oversized baggage on that route, the maximum dimensions and weight, payment or prepayment requirements, and any special-handling process. Payment alone does not guarantee acceptance.

What if the airline’s rule is unclear?

Send the carrier your three outside measurements, packed weight, flight numbers and operating airlines. Request a written answer naming the applicable allowance and fees, and keep it with your booking.

The Bottom Line

Measure the assembled case’s greatest outside height, width and depth, include wheels and handles when required, add the three values, and weigh the packed gear. Then verify the exact fare, route and operating-carrier rules for included pieces, standard limits, oversize treatment and fees. The 158 cm (62 in) figure is a common reference—not a universal promise—so rely on the current policy governing your itinerary.
