Measure the furniture at its widest points, then measure every usable part of the route from the current location to the destination. Check doorways, halls, turns, stairs, landings, elevators, ceilings and fixed obstructions—not just the front door. For cartons, record length, width and height and label each measurement as internal or external. Doing this before packing exposes clearance problems while you still have time to remove parts, change the route or obtain different boxes.
Why a room or front-door measurement is not enough
A piece can fit through a doorway and still fail at the next turn, stair landing or elevator entrance. The usable opening may be smaller than the architectural opening because of trim, handles, hinges, banisters, light fixtures or a partially open door. A sofa may need to be tilted and rotated, while a tall bookcase may need diagonal clearance rather than a simple width comparison.
Think of the move as a continuous route. You are comparing the item’s dimensions in realistic carrying orientations with every constrained point along that route. Measure the origin and destination if they differ; an item that leaves one room easily may face a tighter path at the new home.

- A rigid tape measure long enough for the largest item.
- A second person to hold the tape and keep bulky pieces steady.
- Paper or a notes app for an item-and-route inventory.
- Painter’s tape or removable labels to mark measured openings and disassembled parts.
- A level or straightedge when you need to check whether a ceiling, landing or cabinet top is truly usable.
- A camera for recording tight corners, overhead pipes, sprinkler heads and elevator interiors.
Use one unit throughout the inventory. Inches are practical for most household moves, but centimeters work if every item and opening uses them. Write dimensions in a consistent order, such as height × width × depth, and note whether a value is measured with doors, drawers, legs, cushions or shelves attached.

Measure each furniture item
Record the maximum height, width and depth
Measure at the widest, tallest and deepest points rather than relying on a product listing or a flat front panel. Include protruding handles, feet, decorative molding, hinges and hardware that will remain attached. A rounded arm, overhanging top or sloping back can make the true maximum larger than the apparent body.
For each piece, record:
- Height: the greatest vertical dimension in the position in which the piece will normally be carried or loaded.
- Width: the widest side-to-side measurement, including arms, trim and protrusions.
- Depth: the front-to-back measurement at the deepest point.
- Removable-part change: the new dimensions after safely removing legs, doors, shelves, cushions or other components.
- Weight and balance notes: where the heavy side is and where handles or safe handholds exist.
Do not remove a component merely to make a number work on paper. Confirm that it can be detached without damage and that you can protect, label and reinstall it.
Use shape-specific measurements for sofas and sectionals
For a sofa or sectional, measure the overall width and the diagonal depth. Diagonal depth helps estimate whether the piece can pass through a doorway while tilted, because the relevant cross-section may be a corner-to-corner line rather than the straight depth. Measure each sectional piece separately if the configuration can be separated.
Also record arm height, back height and the length of any chaise. These values help you decide which end can lead through a doorway and whether the piece can be stood on end without striking a ceiling or light fixture. A diagonal comparison is only one part of the decision; a landing or a 90-degree turn can still block the maneuver.
Use diagonal height for bookcases and dressers
For a bookcase or dresser, note the diagonal height as well as depth and width. The diagonal can matter when the piece is tipped or rotated through a doorway. Measure with drawers, doors and shelves installed, then repeat after removal if those parts can be safely taken out.
Check whether drawers can slide out far enough to change the center of gravity. Keep removed hardware in a labeled bag attached to the matching piece, and protect drawer fronts and shelf edges separately.

Survey the entire route
Start at the furniture’s current position, walk to the building exit, continue through the vehicle-loading path, and then follow the destination route to the exact room. Record each constrained point in the order encountered. A route sketch with arrows is often more useful than a list of isolated numbers.

Doorways and thresholds
Measure the usable width with the door open to the position movers will actually use. If the door can be removed safely, record both the normal and maximum opening, but do not assume removal is permitted in a rental or shared building. Measure usable height from the floor or threshold to the lowest obstruction. Include the thickness of the door leaf, hinges, closer, handles and trim when the item must pass close to them.
Measure thresholds, raised tracks and uneven flooring. A few inches of vertical step can change the angle at which a tall item must be carried.
Halls, turns and wall projections
Measure the narrowest clear width in each hall, not the distance between the walls at shoulder height if a picture rail, radiator, handrail or cabinet projects farther out. At a turn, measure the open area at the inside corner and the diagonal space from the approach to the exit. Mark baseboards, columns, half walls and door swings.
A piece may need to pivot around its center rather than slide along one wall. Photographing the corner from both directions lets you and the moving crew visualize the required orientation.
Stairs, landings and overhead clearance
Measure stair width between banisters or walls, the height and depth of steps, and the size of every landing. Check the ceiling above the landing and the underside of the next flight. Banisters, newel posts, sprinkler pipes, pendant lights and low beams can reduce the usable envelope.

- 【No Puncture & Waterproof】These sturdy packing bags are puncture-free and waterproof, they can easily withstand the rough journey of moving, camping, travel, closet organization and storage.
Record whether a door at the top or bottom opens into the landing. A landing that appears wide enough may not provide enough space to rotate a long sofa or stand a cabinet upright.
Elevators and building entrances
Measure the elevator door opening, interior width, interior depth and interior height. Note the handrail, control panel, mirror, door-closer arm and any protective padding that will be installed on moving day. Check the route from the building entrance to the elevator and from the elevator to the destination floor; the elevator itself is only one segment.
For apartments and condominiums, ask management about reservation times, loading docks, service elevators and rules for removing doors or using common areas. A physically possible route may still be unavailable during your scheduled move.

Ceilings, fixtures and other fixed obstructions
CB2’s measuring guidance specifically calls out ceilings, fixtures, interior walls, stairwell banisters and turns. Measure around every obstruction that can contact the item: ceiling fans, sprinklers, lights, vents, shelves, radiators and wall-mounted equipment. Record which obstructions are fixed and which can be temporarily removed by an authorized person.
Compare the item with the route
Use a comparison sheet rather than a single “door width” test. For every route point, identify the opening, the usable dimensions and the carrying orientation you expect to use.
| What to compare | Furniture record | Route record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Primary cross-section | Height, width and depth in the proposed orientation | Usable opening width and height | Shows whether the item can enter that opening without relying on an impossible angle. |
| Diagonal clearance | Diagonal depth for sofas or diagonal height for tall case goods | Diagonal space through a doorway, turn or landing | Captures tilted or rotated movement that straight dimensions miss. |
| Turning envelope | Overall length and the end that leads | Inside-corner space, landing size and adjacent wall clearance | Determines whether the item can pivot after entering. |
| Vertical envelope | Height when tipped or stood upright | Ceiling, beam, fixture and stair-underside clearance | Prevents damage when changing orientation. |
| Projections | Handles, feet, arms, trim and hardware | Banisters, door hardware, radiators and ledges | Accounts for the true usable, rather than nominal, dimensions. |
There is no universal clearance margin that guarantees success for every furniture shape and route. If the numbers are close, remeasure both sides, account for tape-measure error and ask the mover or delivery team to review photographs and the route before moving day. Do not promise a fit from a simple diagonal calculation when a turn, stairwell or landing remains untested.

Plan disassembly and protection without losing the measurement trail
- Identify safe removals. Check the manufacturer’s instructions or the furniture’s construction before removing legs, doors, drawers, shelves or sectional connectors.
- Measure both states. Write the assembled dimensions and the dimensions after each planned removal. State exactly which parts are off.
- Protect contact points. Wrap corners, glass, finishes and drawer fronts. Padding changes the effective size, so include its thickness when a clearance is tight.
- Label and bag hardware. Mark the bag with the item and location, then tape it to a protected surface rather than leaving it loose in a carton.
- Recheck the route. A smaller disassembled component may follow a different route, but long rails, tabletops and drawer boxes still need their own measurements.
When an item cannot be disassembled and the route is too tight, options include a different exit, a service elevator, a temporary door removal by an authorized professional or a specialist moving crew. Do not force a piece against a frame or stair rail; damage to the item and building can cost more than changing the plan.
Measure moving boxes consistently
Distinguish inside and outside dimensions
Record a carton as length × width × height and explicitly label the measurement as internal or external. Uline’s convention treats the first two dimensions as the flapped sides and height as the side without flaps; its listed box dimensions are inside dimensions. Internal dimensions describe the space available to your contents. External dimensions matter when cartons must fit a closet, truck bay, shelving unit or elevator.
Never assume that a number on one seller’s listing uses the same convention as another seller’s. Check the actual carton or listing for the measurement basis, and update your inventory if the delivered box differs.
Calculate carton volume when it helps planning
To convert inch measurements to cubic feet, multiply length × width × height and divide by 1,728, the number of cubic inches in a cubic foot. For example, a carton with internal dimensions of 18 × 14 × 12 inches has 3,024 cubic inches, or 1.75 cubic feet. This is a capacity calculation, not a promise that the carton can be filled completely; books, fragile items and protective material require practical limits.
Choose a box by contents, not by volume alone
U-Haul’s moving-box guide, updated December 29, 2025, describes small book boxes and other moving-box size categories with example contents. A small book box is intended for dense items such as books, while larger categories are starting points for lighter household goods. Treat those recommendations as guidance rather than universal loading limits.

|---|---|---|
| Small book box | Internal dimensions, weight of the planned contents and room for cushioning | Overloading a carton because its physical volume appears available. |
| General household carton | Inside length, width and height against the item; outside dimensions against storage and transport limits | Buying a box that holds the object but cannot pass through the route or fit the truck arrangement. |
| Specialty or irregular carton | Whether the construction protects the item and whether flaps close without crushing contents | Using a nominally large carton that leaves dangerous voids or weak walls. |
Measure the contents and add space for paper, foam, blankets or corner protection before selecting the carton. Keep heavier objects low and avoid packing a box so tightly that its flaps bow or cannot be taped flat. For fragile items, a smaller, stronger carton can be safer than maximizing cubic capacity.

- ULTRA-STRONG 200LB LOAD CAPACITY — Independently tested to support heavy-duty moves. Our signature wrap-around handles encircle the entire bag from bottom to top, creating a structural "cradle" that supports weight from the base. Combined with reinforced stitching, these bags won't snap or tear, even when packed with heavy linens, books, or kitchenware.
- THE SMARTER BOX ALTERNATIVE — Why buy expensive, bulky moving boxes that end up in the trash? One 24-gallon HOMESURE bag provides the same volume as a large box but is far easier to carry over the shoulder. When empty, all 8 bags fold down into a compact stack, saving you a massive amount of storage space in your closet or car trunk.
- COLLEGE DORM MOVE-IN READY — Save time and car space on move-in day. One 24-gallon HOMESURE bag is a dorm room lifesaver. To visualize the space: it fits 2 Twin XL comforters and 1 mattress pad, OR 6 standard pillows, OR 30+ sneakers and an entire semester’s worth of sweaters. It’s the ultimate heavy-duty solution for carrying everything from the trunk to the dorm room.
- INSTANT CONTENT IDENTIFICATION — Stop the "guessing game" on moving day. Each tote features a clear plastic tag pocket. Simply slide in a label to identify "Master Bedroom" or "Garage Toys" in seconds. This small design detail saves hours of unzipping and searching, making your organization system professional and efficient.
- PRO-GRADE PROTECTION — Crafted from high-density, water-resistant woven fabric with smooth #5 dual zippers. These aren't flimsy one-move bags; they are designed for years of reuse. Whether it's light rain during transit or long-term storage in a dusty attic, your clothes and linens stay pristine and protected.
Use outside dimensions for storage and vehicle planning
Even when a supplier publishes internal dimensions, measure the assembled carton externally if it must pass through a doorway, stack under a shelf or fit a vehicle bay. Corrugated walls, flaps, handles and protective sleeves occupy space outside the rated cavity. Record the external measurement in a separate column so it is not accidentally used as packing capacity.
Lay out a planned stack using the external dimensions of the cartons you actually received. Leave room for tie-downs, ventilation where required and access to labels. A box that fits individually may become inaccessible or unstable when stacked.
Make a pre-move measurement checklist
- Every furniture item has height, width, depth and any relevant diagonal measurement.
- Removable parts and the dimensions after removal are recorded.
- Each doorway has usable width and height, including the effect of trim, hardware and thresholds.
- Halls, turns, stair flights, landings and elevator interiors are measured in route order.
- Ceilings, fixtures, banisters, pipes and other fixed obstructions are noted with photographs.
- Origin and destination routes have both been checked where they differ.
- Cartons are labeled with length × width × height and internal or external status.
- The actual cartons available—not a generic size name—have been verified.
- Protective packing thickness and disassembled parts are included in the final comparison.
- Tight clearances have been reviewed with the mover or delivery team before moving day.
Troubleshoot a doubtful fit
The door is wider than the furniture depth, but the item still will not pass
Check the item’s width, diagonal depth, arm or back height, door thickness and the space immediately beyond the opening. The item may enter only when tilted, and the next wall or turn may prevent that rotation. Remove safe, protruding parts and remeasure; otherwise test a different route.
The furniture fits the hall but not the turn
Measure the inside corner and landing, then model the leading end and pivot point. A long piece can require more clearance than its width because the trailing end swings into the opposite wall. A photograph from above or a simple taped outline on the floor can reveal the needed turning envelope.
The carton fits the contents but will not fit the destination
Compare the carton’s external dimensions with the destination doorway, shelf, closet or vehicle space. Repack into a different carton category, reduce protective material only if the contents remain safe, or split the load. Do not use external dimensions to estimate how much can be packed inside.
The measurements are nearly equal
Repeat the measurement at the narrowest point, check that the tape is level and account for padding, door movement and human carrying space. Send the item dimensions, route measurements and photographs to the moving or delivery team. A professional can identify handling requirements that a static number does not show.
When to stop measuring and change the plan
Change the route, disassemble further, reserve a service elevator or hire specialized help when a fixed obstruction leaves no practical carrying orientation. Do not remove structural components, cut trim or alter a building opening without the owner’s or manager’s authorization. The objective is a repeatable, damage-free path—not the smallest theoretical gap through which an item might be forced.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsComplete the survey before packing and repeat a quick check immediately before loading. Doors may be blocked by other cartons, elevator padding may reduce space, and a planned removable part may not come off as expected. A current measurement record gives the crew a clear sequence and prevents avoidable surprises.
