You do not measure entanglement by inspecting one photon or one detector click. You infer it from repeated joint measurements: choose a claim, measure each photon in several coordinated settings, collect coincidence statistics, and apply a criterion whose assumptions and scope are explicit. For two photons, that may be state tomography or a tailored entanglement witness. For three or more photons, the analysis must also distinguish genuine multipartite entanglement from states that contain only entangled subgroups. Bell-inequality violations answer a different question: whether the observed correlations are incompatible with a specified class of local hidden-variable models.
The right method therefore depends on what you need to establish: a broad estimate of the joint quantum state, one selected entanglement property, a minimum entanglement depth, or Bell nonlocality. The steps below show how to make that choice and how to interpret the resulting data without overstating what an experiment proves.
What photon-entanglement measurement actually establishes
Entanglement is a property of the joint state prepared for a group of photons, not a label attached to an individual detection event. An experiment repeats the preparation and records outcomes from several photons together. Those joint frequencies are compared with predictions for separable states, a selected entanglement class, or local hidden-variable models.

- which photons are treated as separate parties;
- which degree of freedom is encoded, such as polarization, path, time-bin, frequency, or spatial mode;
- the exact claim being tested;
- the measurement settings and detector model;
- the statistical uncertainty and the threshold or bound used; and
- which alternative explanations are ruled out and which remain possible.
A result can certify one property while saying nothing about another. For example, a witness may certify entanglement of a chosen type without reconstructing the whole state. A Bell test may reject the specified local hidden-variable models without quantifying the amount of entanglement. A non-violation in either test is not automatically evidence that the photons are separable.
Start by defining the encoding and the claim
Identify the photon parties
Decide whether each photon is a party in its own right or whether several modes are being grouped into one subsystem. This matters for multipartite statements: a three-photon experiment can contain an entangled pair plus an unrelated photon, even though the data show correlations somewhere in the setup.
Specify the encoded degree of freedom
Polarization analyzers cannot characterize path, time-bin, frequency, or spatial-mode entanglement unless those variables are included in the measurement model. For polarization qubits, local measurements are usually expressed through polarization observables and analyzer settings. For another encoding, the settings must resolve the corresponding basis states and any coherence between them.

Common targets include:
- existence of bipartite entanglement;
- genuine multipartite entanglement, meaning the state cannot be explained as a mixture of states separable across different bipartitions;
- a minimum entanglement depth, the smallest number of particles that must be genuinely entangled;
- the value or a bound for a selected entanglement measure; or
- Bell nonlocality or a device-independent conclusion under stated loophole and independence assumptions.
The target determines whether a general reconstruction or a narrower test is appropriate. Witnesses can be tailored to GHZ-like, W-like, graph, or other known state structures. If the state family is uncertain, tomography usually provides more diagnostic information, at greater experimental cost.
Method 1: quantum state tomography
What tomography does
Tomography estimates the joint density matrix from outcome frequencies measured in an informationally complete set of local settings. For polarization qubits, the experiment records coincidences for a sufficiently rich collection of analyzer bases, then reconstructs the density matrix that best fits those observations. The reconstructed state can be tested for separability or evaluated with a chosen entanglement quantifier.
Tomography is the broadest of the three main approaches because one estimated state can support several downstream analyses. It can reveal unwanted mixtures, asymmetries, coherences, and populations that a single witness would not expose.

What the experiment must control
- Measurement completeness: settings must cover every degree of freedom included in the state model. Polarization-only data cannot support a claim about unmeasured path or time-bin entanglement.
- Calibration: analyzer angles, phase settings, detector efficiencies, timing windows, and accidental-coincidence rates affect the reconstructed state.
- Hilbert-space dimension: the reconstruction must match the physical encoding. Treating a multimode photon as an ideal qubit can produce an overconfident result.
- Statistical treatment: finite counts require uncertainty estimates. A physical reconstruction should respect properties such as positivity and unit trace rather than accepting an unphysical linear inversion without qualification.
- Loss and background model: state estimates can change when missed detections, dark counts, mode mismatch, or accidental coincidences are handled differently.
Tomography is not assumption-free. The reported density matrix is conditional on the encoding, calibration model, reconstruction procedure, and treatment of loss and background. The 2019 review by Friis, Vitagliano, Malik, and coauthors emphasizes that exactly quantifying the amount of entanglement is experimentally demanding for most quantum systems.

How to interpret a tomographic result
Report the reconstructed state together with the criterion applied to it. A statement such as entangled is incomplete unless it identifies the separability test or entanglement measure, the uncertainty interval, and the assumptions used in reconstruction. If the confidence range overlaps the separable boundary, the data do not support a definitive certification at the stated confidence level.
Method 2: entanglement witnesses
How a witness works
An entanglement witness is an observable designed to have a known bound for a target class of separable or less-entangled states. The experiment decomposes that observable into local measurements, records the relevant joint outcomes, estimates the witness expectation value, and compares it with the bound. Under the convention used by a particular witness, a negative expectation value can certify entanglement; the sign convention and threshold must always be stated for that witness.
Because only the settings needed for the chosen observable are measured, a witness can require substantially less data than full tomography. The trade-off is selectivity: a witness is sensitive to the property for which it was designed, not to every possible form of entanglement.
What a witness can and cannot say
- A value beyond the witness bound certifies the defined target property when the measurement model and assumptions hold.
- A value inside the nonviolating region does not prove separability. The state may simply lie outside the witness’s sensitivity.
- A strong violation can provide a quantitative lower bound only when a relation between that witness value and the chosen entanglement measure has been established.
- The witness must be matched to the multipartite claim. A witness for a particular GHZ-like state does not automatically certify every form of genuine multipartite entanglement.
Multipartite witness examples
Experiments have used tailored witnesses for three- and four-photon states, including cases in which known Bell inequalities did not establish the relevant multipartite property. Another optimizable-witness study reported two complementary witness families for identifying entanglement partitioning and entanglement depth. Each family used two local measurements and was demonstrated, as a proof of principle, on five different eight-photon entangled states. That result is evidence for those constructions and states, not a universal two-setting recipe for arbitrary photon groups.

Method 3: Bell-inequality tests
The question a Bell test answers
A Bell test measures correlations for multiple settings and checks whether they exceed a bound obeyed by a specified class of local hidden-variable models. A statistically significant violation supports Bell nonlocality and can be useful for a device-independent certification route when the test’s assumptions are satisfied.

Bell nonlocality and entanglement are related but not interchangeable. Some entangled states do not violate a given Bell inequality, so failure to violate it does not establish separability. Conversely, a Bell result is not a general meter of how much entanglement the photons contain.
Assumptions and loopholes
A device-independent conclusion requires the experiment to describe its setting choices, independence assumptions, detection treatment, locality conditions, and the relevant loophole analysis. Losses, inefficient detection, timing correlations, or biased sampling can weaken the inference if they are not handled by the protocol. The 2007 verification paper by van Enk, Lütkenhaus, and Kimble explicitly distinguishes protocols intended to eliminate hidden-variable models from protocols intended to verify entanglement.
Tomography, witnesses, and Bell tests compared
| Method | Primary claim | Prior knowledge and calibration | Data burden | Meaning of a negative result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| State tomography | Broad estimate of the joint state; supports later separability tests or entanglement measures | Requires an encoding model, informationally complete settings, and careful calibration | Usually the largest, because many settings and repeated counts are needed | Depends on reconstruction uncertainty and model validity; does not justify a broad no-entanglement claim when unmeasured degrees of freedom remain |
| Entanglement witness | A selected entanglement property, partition, or entanglement-depth bound | Requires a witness matched to the target state family and calibrated local observables | Lower than full tomography for the chosen property | Normally inconclusive about other entangled states or properties |
| Bell inequality | Violation of specified local hidden-variable models; potentially device-independent certification | Requires a protocol with explicit setting, independence, locality, and detection assumptions | Multiple settings and enough trials for a statistically significant violation | Non-violation does not prove separability or absence of entanglement |
What changes for three or more photons
Separate pairwise entanglement from genuine multipartite entanglement
For a group of three or more photons, the word entangled is ambiguous unless the partition is specified. A state can contain an entangled pair while the remaining photon is separable. A genuine multipartite claim must exclude biseparable explanations, or the corresponding generalized separability class for the number of parties.
Use entanglement depth when full genuineness is too strong
Entanglement depth asks for the minimum number of photons that must participate in genuine entanglement. For example, a result may certify that at least four particles are genuinely entangled without proving that all photons in a larger group share one genuinely multipartite state. Witnesses can be optimized for this type of partitioning claim, while tomography can support several competing partition tests if its model is adequate.
Match the analysis to the expected state family
GHZ-like, W-like, graph, and other state structures have different correlation patterns. A tailored witness can be efficient when the preparation is known to target one family. When the source may produce an unexpected mixture or a different structure, broad reconstruction is safer because it can expose features that a specialized witness ignores.
A practical measurement workflow
- Define the parties and encoding. List every photon included in the claim and identify whether its information is carried by polarization, path, time-bin, frequency, spatial mode, or another degree of freedom.
- Write the claim in testable language. Specify whether you seek any bipartite entanglement, genuine multipartite entanglement, a minimum entanglement depth, a quantitative measure, or Bell nonlocality.
- Select the method. Choose tomography for a broad state estimate, a tailored witness for a known target property, or a Bell inequality for a nonlocality or device-independent claim.
- Define local settings and the measurement model. State analyzer settings, phase references, coincidence windows, detector treatment, calibration procedures, and any assumptions about losses, background, mode matching, and dimensionality.
- Collect repeated joint outcomes. Record coincidence counts for every required setting. One detector event cannot establish entanglement because the inference depends on a distribution of outcomes.
- Estimate uncertainty. Propagate counting statistics and relevant calibration uncertainty. If a fitted state, witness value, or Bell statistic is close to its boundary, use a confidence or credible interval rather than relying on a single point estimate.
- Apply the stated criterion. For tomography, test the reconstructed state with the selected separability criterion or measure. For a witness, compare its expectation value with its bound. For a Bell test, compare the observed statistic with the local-model bound under the protocol’s assumptions.
- Report the scope of the result. Give the observed value, threshold or bound, uncertainty, number of parties, encoding, settings, and the alternatives ruled out. Explicitly state what the method does not rule out.
Data-quality issues that can change the conclusion
Insufficient counts
Finite data can make a separable state appear to cross a boundary by chance, or hide a real violation. Increase the number of repeated trials and report uncertainty rather than presenting a threshold crossing without a statistical qualification.

Accidental coincidences and background
Uncorrelated photons, dark counts, and a coincidence window that is too broad can dilute correlations. Background subtraction or loss correction must be described because different treatments can change both reconstructed states and witness values. Corrections should not be presented as measured entanglement unless their assumptions are justified.
Mis-calibrated analyzers
An angle, phase, detector-efficiency, or timing error changes the effective observable. Calibration should be performed in the same configuration used for the entanglement run, and its uncertainty should be included when the final statistic is close to a bound.
Unmeasured modes
Photons can occupy multiple spatial, spectral, or temporal modes. If the analysis treats them as ideal qubits while ignoring those modes, the inferred state may be incomplete. Either include the modes in the model or limit the claim to the measured subsystem.
Post-selection and fair-sampling assumptions
Selecting only events that pass a coincidence or transmission condition can change the population being analyzed. State clearly whether the conclusion applies to detected pairs or to all emitted systems, and identify any fair-sampling or detection assumptions used by a Bell analysis.

Tomography indicates entanglement
This supports entanglement for the modeled encoding when the chosen separability test excludes separable states beyond the stated uncertainty. It does not automatically certify entanglement in an unmeasured degree of freedom or prove device independence.

A witness does not violate its bound
Do not translate this into the statement no entanglement. The state may be entangled in a form to which that witness is insensitive. A different witness or tomography may be needed.
A Bell inequality is not violated
The tested local hidden-variable model remains compatible with the observed data under the protocol’s assumptions. This does not prove separability, because entangled states can fail to violate the selected inequality.
Pairwise tests succeed but a genuine multipartite test fails
The data may support entangled subgroups without establishing that all photons are jointly entangled. Report the pairwise result and the multipartite result separately; do not upgrade one into the other.
Reporting checklist for a credible result
- Number of photon parties and the physical source or preparation context.
- Encoded degree of freedom and the dimensionality assumed for each party.
- Exact target claim: entanglement, genuine multipartite entanglement, depth, a quantitative measure, or Bell nonlocality.
- All local settings, outcome definitions, coincidence criteria, and calibration procedures needed to reproduce the statistic.
- Counts, acquisition conditions, treatment of loss, background, accidental events, and post-selection.
- Reconstruction method or witness/Bell statistic, including sign convention and threshold.
- Uncertainty method and confidence level, especially when a value is near a bound.
- Which separable, biseparable, local-hidden-variable, or other alternatives are excluded.
- Which forms of entanglement or alternative explanations remain outside the method’s scope.
Choosing the shortest defensible route
Use tomography when you need to understand the state broadly, when the preparation is uncertain, or when several different entanglement questions may follow. Use a witness when the state family and target property are well defined and reducing settings or data is important. Use a Bell test when the scientific question is specifically nonlocality or a device-independent guarantee and the experiment can satisfy the associated assumptions.
These methods are complementary rather than interchangeable. The strongest article, paper, or laboratory report says exactly what was measured and avoids turning a test for one property into a universal entanglement claim.
