To verify a magnetically sculpted field, turn the design into a measurable target: a vector field (or specified component) over a defined volume, coordinate system, and operating condition. Use a calibrated probe with suitable range and geometry, position it on a documented grid or path, record background and instrument details, and compare the resulting map with the intended field and stated tolerances. One gaussmeter reading can confirm a local value; it cannot prove that a three-dimensional field has the correct shape.

What “sculpted field” means in a measurement plan

A sculpted field is deliberately nonuniform. Its useful description is not “strong” or “weak,” but a function of position and operating state. In most engineering work the quantity is magnetic flux density, B, expressed in tesla or gauss. Some designs instead specify magnetic field strength, H, in amperes per metre, or a derived quantity such as a gradient, force, or field integral.

Before taking a reading, write down the target in a form that another person could reproduce:

  • Quantity: state whether the target is B, H, a component such as Bz, magnitude, direction, gradient, or another derived value.
  • Coordinates: define the origin, axis directions, sign convention, and units. Preserve the same convention used by the simulation or design drawing.
  • Region: specify the volume, surface, or line to be mapped, including the distance from the magnet or assembly.
  • Operating condition: record coil current, permanent-magnet state, temperature, nearby equipment, time, and whether the field is static or varying.
  • Acceptance rule: set component-wise or magnitude tolerances before looking at the results. Include allowable position error and measurement uncertainty.

If only one component matters, say so explicitly. A probe aligned with one axis may show the correct value for that component while the transverse components or direction are wrong.

Choose a sensor that can resolve the field you designed

Sensor selection depends on field strength, required direction information, smallest spatial feature, probe stand-off, bandwidth, and uncertainty. The most expensive instrument is not automatically the best one: a probe with a large active area can average away a narrow peak, while a sensor with insufficient range may saturate or produce misleading readings.

Hall-effect gaussmeter for local measurements

A Hall-effect gaussmeter is a practical choice for point-by-point measurements of local flux density. It normally uses a small Hall element at or near the probe tip. Confirm the active-area location, probe orientation, temperature behavior, resolution, and calibration status rather than assuming the tip itself is the sensing point.

For scale, the Magnaflux Bell 5170 datasheet lists a tangential probe, a 0–200 G (0–20 mT) range, selectable Gauss, Tesla, and A/m units, and ±3% accuracy. Those are specifications for that particular model and datasheet, not a universal requirement or endorsement. Check current documentation and calibration before relying on any instrument.

Three-axis fluxgate for vector and weak-field work

A three-axis fluxgate can report vector components when its field range and bandwidth suit the application. It is useful when direction, weak-field behavior, or cancellation zones matter, but it introduces axis-specific errors. National Physical Laboratory guidance discusses offset drift and crossfield error; sensitivity and orthogonality of the three axes may require calibration and correction.

For instrument gain checks, calibrated Helmholtz-coil systems can generate known fields. A fluxgate or other sensor should be calibrated across the range and orientations that matter in the actual map, not only at one convenient point.

When a different method is necessary

Do not extrapolate beyond an instrument’s specified range. A field much stronger or weaker than the sensor supports requires another calibrated method or a specialist laboratory. Very fine features may require a smaller active area and a precision positioner. Rapidly changing fields require appropriate AC bandwidth and a defined peak, RMS, or phase measurement. A field map is also different from permanent-magnet material characterization: IEC TR 63304:2021 addresses DC magnetic properties of permanent-magnet materials in an open magnetic circuit using a superconducting magnet and self-demagnetizing corrections. It is not an everyday mapping procedure.

Instrument characteristics to compare

Characteristic Why it matters for a sculpted field Question to answer before use
Usable field range Prevents saturation and avoids measuring in an extrapolated region. Does the full expected minimum-to-maximum field fit the specified range?
Accuracy and traceability Sets the floor for a defensible pass/fail decision. Is calibration documented, current, and traceable to an appropriate standard?
Noise and resolution Determines whether small gradients or nulls are distinguishable from noise. Is the noise below the allowed residual at the chosen measurement bandwidth?
One-axis versus three-axis output A single component cannot establish vector direction. Do you need magnitude only, one component, or all three components?
Active area and probe geometry A large or offset sensing area can spatially average or displace a feature. Where exactly is the sensitive element, and what is its effective size?
Stand-off Field gradients can make a millimetre of error significant. Can the fixture hold the intended distance repeatably?
DC/AC bandwidth and output mode Dynamic fields may be reported as peak, RMS, or a filtered value. Does the mode match the time behavior in the specification?
Temperature behavior Sensor offset and magnet strength can change with temperature. Will temperature be measured, controlled, or included in uncertainty?
Cross-axis error Off-axis field can appear in the reported component. Are cross-axis coefficients known and corrected?
Positioning and disturbance Ferromagnetic fixtures and inconsistent placement change the field being measured. Can a nonmagnetic fixture provide repeatable locations without perturbing the field?

IEEE’s P3599 project page lists sensitivity, linearity, full-scale range, hysteresis, temperature dependence, offset, noise, bandwidth, and dynamic range among planar-Hall sensor characterization measures. The page identifies the project as an active PAR; it is not a published final standard. The PAR approval date shown is 2025-06-19.

Prepare a repeatable coordinate frame and test setup

Mount the magnet or magnetic assembly so its position cannot drift. Establish a fixture or survey reference that defines the probe location relative to the assembly. For a small prototype, a nonmagnetic plate with marked coordinates may be sufficient; for a tight tolerance, use a precision translation stage and verify its scale.

  1. Remove or document disturbances. Move ferromagnetic tools, steel tables, batteries, speakers, and current-carrying cables away from the measurement volume. If an item must remain, record its location and keep it unchanged.
  2. Choose probe orientation. Align the sensing axis with the design axis, or record the full orientation matrix or angles. Keep that orientation fixed at every point unless the procedure intentionally rotates the probe.
  3. Set stand-off. Define the distance from the assembly reference surface to the sensitive element, not merely to the plastic probe housing.
  4. Record the background. With the device under test in the same meter orientation and operating environment, measure the ambient field. Decide in advance whether background will be subtracted, modelled, or reported separately.
  5. Configure the meter. Select DC or AC mode, peak or RMS behavior, range, filtering, and units. Do not switch units or modes partway through a map without recording the change.
  6. Stabilize the condition. Wait for current, temperature, and sensor readings to settle. If the field changes with time, record timestamps or phase so measurements can be compared meaningfully.

Map the field instead of hunting for a maximum

Plan the sampling pattern from the smallest field feature that must be resolved. There is no universal grid spacing: a narrow pole gap, steep edge, or cancellation line needs closer samples than a slowly varying central region. Retain the design map’s sampling coordinates when possible so measured and simulated values correspond directly.

Define the sampling pattern

  • Grid: use a regular two- or three-dimensional grid for a volume map.
  • Surface scan: use a plane or curved surface when the application only depends on a working face.
  • Line or path: use a defined trajectory for a gradient, axial profile, or production check.
  • Adaptive refinement: add points where the field changes rapidly, changes sign, or differs from the model.

At every point, record coordinates, probe orientation, reading, units, meter and probe identity, selected range, background treatment, and operating state. If a three-axis sensor is used, save all components even when one component is the primary acceptance value. Repeat a selection of points at the beginning, middle, and end of the run to estimate repeatability and drift.

Use a measurement record that can be audited

Field in the record Example content
Point identifier Grid index or path distance
Position x, y, z in the defined coordinate system
Orientation Probe axis and any rotation angles
Reading Each measured component, plus magnitude if calculated
Instrument setup Meter, probe, range, mode, filter, and units
Condition Current, temperature, time, magnet state, and nearby equipment
Background Value and method used for subtraction or separate reporting
Quality check Repeat reading, operator note, or fixture verification

Compare the measured map with the intended field

Plot each measured component on the same coordinate system as the design. Add magnitude and direction plots where they answer the engineering question, but do not replace component data with magnitude alone: two vectors can have the same magnitude and different directions.

  • Vector error: the magnitude of the measured-minus-target vector.
  • Spatial statistics: maximum error, root-mean-square error, percentile error, or the fraction of points inside tolerance.

State which metric controls acceptance. A map can pass an average-error limit while failing a local peak or a critical direction requirement.

Combine the sensor specification, calibration uncertainty, repeatability, coordinate error, stand-off error, temperature effects, background uncertainty, and model interpolation error. Near a steep gradient, position uncertainty can dominate the gaussmeter’s stated accuracy. Report the uncertainty with the residuals and say whether tolerances are evaluated with or without an uncertainty guard band.

Diagnose a mismatch before changing the magnet

A disagreement between a measured and intended map has several possible causes. Check them in an order that separates measurement problems from assembly problems:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Coordinate mismatch: confirm origin, axis signs, rotation, units, and whether the model uses the probe location or a nearby reference surface.
  2. Probe position: verify stand-off and lateral location with the fixture. Re-measure a reference point after moving the probe.
  3. Orientation and cross-axis error: rotate the probe or use an independently calibrated vector sensor to check whether transverse field is leaking into the reported component.
  4. Background and nearby metal: repeat the ambient reading and remove or reposition suspected disturbances.
  5. Instrument range and mode: check for saturation, auto-ranging changes, AC/DC selection, filtering, and peak-versus-RMS interpretation.
  6. Drift and temperature: compare repeated reference points and inspect current and temperature logs.
  7. Assembly or model assumptions: only after the measurement chain is verified, investigate magnet placement, coil current, material properties, or an incorrect simulation parameter.

What a large-system validation looks like

The CMS detector’s return-yoke validation illustrates the principle at a much larger scale. A field-mapping machine was used together with 22 flux loops and 82 three-dimensional Hall sensors installed on return-yoke blocks, and the measurements were compared with a three-dimensional model. This is an example of independent measurement/model comparison, not a required sensor count for a laboratory assembly. The transferable lesson is to use redundant, spatially distributed measurements and compare them with a coordinate-matched model.

Separate field mapping from permanent-magnet material testing

Mapping answers, “What field exists at these locations under these conditions?” Material characterization answers a different question about intrinsic magnetic properties and demagnetizing behavior. IEC TR 63304:2021 covers DC magnetic properties of permanent-magnet materials in an open magnetic circuit using a superconducting magnet and self-demagnetizing corrections. Applying that document’s specialized method is not necessary for ordinary verification of a finished sculpted-field assembly, and an ordinary gaussmeter map does not replace material characterization.

National Physical Laboratory guidance is practical context for generating and measuring DC magnetic fields in its stated 1 nT to 1 mT range. That range belongs to the guide’s scope; it does not mean one instrument or one procedure covers every sculpted field. Select equipment whose specified range and uncertainty match the actual field.

How to report a defensible result

A useful report lets another operator reproduce the map and understand its limits. Include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • target quantity, coordinate definition, mapped region, grid or path, and acceptance limits;
  • magnet or coil configuration, current, temperature, timing, and nearby equipment;
  • instrument and probe model, serial identity, calibration date or status, range, mode, bandwidth, units, active-area location, and orientation;
  • background readings and the subtraction or correction method;
  • raw component data, calculated magnitude or direction, plots, residual maps, and the acceptance metric;
  • repeatability results and an uncertainty budget covering sensor, position, orientation, temperature, background, and model comparison;
  • any excluded points, saturated readings, interpolation, smoothing, or post-processing.

Conclude with a bounded statement such as: “The measured Bz component is within the specified tolerance at the listed grid points under the recorded current and temperature.” Avoid claiming that an entire three-dimensional field is verified when only a line, surface, or single component was measured.
