The reliable way to cut electricity use is to measure first, change one thing, and compare equivalent periods. Use a whole-home panel monitor or a utility smart-meter integration to see the house-wide baseline and major peaks. Use an energy-reporting smart plug when you need to test one appliance, especially if you rent. A monitor does not lower a bill by itself; it gives you feedback to find waste, schedule flexible loads, and verify whether a change actually reduced kilowatt-hours (kWh).
What a smart energy monitor measures
Electricity use is reported in watts (the rate of consumption) and kilowatt-hours (the amount billed over time). A 1,000-watt appliance running for one hour uses 1 kWh. Your utility bill normally charges for total kWh during a billing period, sometimes with different prices by time of day.
A monitoring system samples electrical activity, stores it, and presents a live or near-live view in an app or web portal. The useful output is not a constantly changing number; it is a pattern you can act on: a load that never turns off, a large evening peak, or an appliance that runs longer than expected.
Whole-home panel monitor
A panel-installed monitor uses current-transformer (CT) clamps around service conductors, or equivalent sensors, to estimate the electricity entering the home. It can show total demand and, depending on the system, infer individual devices or circuits. This is the broadest option for homeowners with a compatible electrical panel. Because installation involves the panel and exposed mains, use a licensed electrician and follow local code.

Utility smart-meter integration
Some utilities provide customer access to a smart meter that reports usage at short intervals. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Saver guide (2022) says a smart meter can show usage almost in real time. A utility-linked app may require no additional hardware or subscription, but availability depends on the utility’s meter, software, and rollout phase.
Energy-reporting smart plug
A smart plug measures the outlet load connected to it and reports watts, kWh, and often a history. It is a practical choice for a renter or for answering one focused question, such as how much a dehumidifier, desktop computer, refrigerator, or entertainment center uses. Check the plug’s current and power rating; never connect a load that exceeds it, and do not use a plug where the appliance manufacturer or electrical code prohibits an intermediate device.
Smart power strip
A power strip with energy tracking can measure several related plug loads together. It is useful for a desk or media center where a control rule can turn peripheral devices off when a primary device sleeps. Treat the strip’s total rating as the limit for all connected equipment.
Choose the measurement approach that fits your home
| Need | Better fit | Questions to answer before buying or enrolling |
|---|---|---|
| House-wide baseline and major-load visibility | Panel-installed monitor with CT clamps or a utility smart-meter integration | Is electrician installation required? Is the service panel compatible? Does it support solar, an EV, a heat pump, or other two-way and variable loads? What sampling interval and history are provided? |
| Renter or one appliance | Energy-reporting smart plug | Is the appliance within the plug’s rated current? Can you export data? Does the plug retain measurements if Wi-Fi is down? |
| Automated thermostat, lighting, and plug-load control | ENERGY STAR-compatible smart home energy-management system (SHEMS) | Does the package support schedules, occupancy rules, manual override, and utility demand response? What data does it share, and who owns it? |
Compare measurement scope, installation, sampling interval, data retention and export, device identification, rate and tariff support, integrations, privacy terms, automation, standby draw, warranty, and total cost. An ENERGY STAR label applies to qualifying systems and packages; it does not mean every individual monitor or smart plug is certified.

Install and set up the monitor safely
For a panel-installed monitor
- Check compatibility. Identify the service-panel type, available space, main-service configuration, solar or battery equipment, and the voltage and phase arrangement. Confirm that the monitor’s documentation covers your configuration.
- Arrange a licensed electrician. The electrician should de-energize or work around the panel according to local requirements, place the CT clamps correctly, secure low-voltage wiring, and close all covers. Do not remove a panel cover or handle service conductors yourself.
- Connect the monitor and account. Follow the manufacturer’s app instructions, select the correct region and electrical configuration, and apply firmware updates. Give the system time to establish a normal signal before judging device labels.
- Set your tariff. Enter the utility’s rate structure if the app supports it. A flat rate, time-of-use schedule, demand charge, and export credit produce different cost calculations even when kWh is identical.
- Validate the total. Compare a day or two of monitor kWh with the utility meter or bill. Small differences can result from interval boundaries, rounding, or the monitor’s measurement method; a large persistent difference warrants checking CT orientation, phase settings, and installation.
For a utility smart-meter app
- Confirm that your account and meter are enrolled in the utility’s interval-data service.
- Complete the utility’s identity and premises verification, then choose the interval view (for example, hourly or daily) when available.
- Record the meter’s billing-period dates and units. An app may show a near-real-time estimate while the bill uses a different read period.
- Check whether the utility offers time-of-use rates, off-peak incentives, or demand-response events. Those programs can change the best time to run flexible equipment.
For a reporting smart plug
- Check the appliance nameplate and the plug’s maximum current, voltage, and wattage. Motors and compressors can have a higher startup current than their running value.
- Set up the plug on a secure home network, update its firmware, and enable energy history or export if offered.
- Plug in one appliance or one defined group. Label it with the appliance name and location so later readings are not confused.
- Observe a complete operating cycle. A refrigerator, heat pump, or dehumidifier needs enough time to include both on and off periods.
Establish a seven-day baseline
Start with a baseline rather than trying to improve everything at once. The baseline tells you what normal use looks like and gives you a fair comparison after a change.
- Copy the last bill. Record total kWh, billed cost, billing start and end dates, and the tariff or rate schedule. If the monitoring app allows it, export hourly or daily data. Keep kWh separate from cost because rates can change.
- Run seven days without deliberate changes. Use the home normally. Note outdoor temperature, heating or cooling operation, occupancy, EV charging, laundry, guests, and unusual events in a simple log.
- Mark the patterns. Look for a steady overnight floor, morning and evening peaks, and long high-power plateaus. A constant load is often easier to address than a short, unavoidable spike.
- Identify candidates. Match visible events to known equipment: water heating, heating and cooling, cooking, laundry, pumps, charging, computers, and entertainment devices. Use a reporting plug for uncertain plug-in loads.
- Save the baseline. Export the data or capture the dates and totals. A screenshot without the time range and units is not enough for a later comparison.
Find what is using the most electricity
Start with the largest energy contributors
Whole-home data shows the total but may not identify every circuit. Large, repeated peaks usually come from equipment that heats, cools, pumps, or charges. Compare the timing of a peak with the appliance’s normal cycle. A 4-kW load for 15 minutes uses 1 kWh, while a 100-W device left on for 24 hours uses 2.4 kWh; both the power level and the duration matter.
Investigate the always-on load
Read the lowest overnight demand when the house is quiet. Network equipment, refrigeration, security systems, standby electronics, circulation pumps, and ventilation can create a continuous floor. Turn off or unplug one safe, known device and watch whether the floor changes. Do not disconnect safety equipment, medical equipment, refrigeration that protects food, or systems that require continuous operation.
Use device disaggregation as a lead, not proof
Some apps learn appliance signatures and label devices automatically. Sense describes an app that connects to a Sense-enabled smart meter or a Sense Home Energy Monitor, shows device activity and real-time use, and learns patterns over time. Its workflow can indicate which devices are on or off, how long and how often they run, and how much energy they consume.

Disaggregation is an estimate. Overlapping loads, inverter-driven motors, similar appliances, and short cycles can be misidentified. Re-label an item only after observing it through several cycles, and verify an important conclusion with a plug meter or circuit-level measurement.
Make one change and measure the result
- Choose one controllable action. Examples include turning off an always-on entertainment group, adding a schedule, adjusting a thermostat within your comfort and health limits, or moving EV charging, laundry, or dishwashing to an off-peak period.
- Leave other habits stable. Changing several appliances at once makes it impossible to know which action worked.
- Repeat for a comparable week. Use the same seven-day length and, as far as practical, similar weather, occupancy, travel, and equipment operation.
- Compare kWh first. Subtract the new period’s kWh from the baseline and divide by the baseline kWh for a percentage change. Then examine cost using the correct tariff. A lower bill can result from a rate change even when consumption did not fall.
- Keep the change only if it works for you. A schedule that saves energy but causes missed work, food spoilage, uncomfortable temperatures, or excessive manual effort is not a sustainable control.
There is no universal savings percentage or guaranteed payback for a monitor. Results depend on your starting load, equipment, weather, tariff, and whether you act on the information. Treat the monitor as a feedback and verification tool, and report your own measured kWh change rather than promising a fixed reduction.
Actions that commonly reduce measured use
Shift flexible consumption to a cheaper period
If your tariff rewards off-peak use, schedule EV charging, water heating, laundry, dishwashing, or other flexible loads for the lower-price window. Verify the schedule in the monitor and utility portal; an off-peak period lowers cost only when your rate actually differs by time.
Control standby groups
Use a schedule or an energy-tracking power strip for a desk or media center. Keep networking, security, medical, refrigeration, and other required loads outside the control rule. Check the overnight baseline after the rule runs for several days.

Use thermostat changes deliberately
A connected thermostat can apply schedules and occupancy rules. Make small changes that preserve comfort and protect occupants, then compare a weather-adjusted or otherwise comparable week. Heating and cooling demand is strongly affected by outdoor conditions, so a cold or hot spell can overwhelm a modest thermostat adjustment.
Respond to occupancy and demand signals
A coordinated system can turn selected loads down when rooms are empty or during a utility demand-response event. Set user overrides and an exception list before enabling automation. Confirm what the utility may control, when events occur, and whether participation changes your rate or credit.

ENERGY STAR’s current smart home energy-management-system criteria cover a package rather than a lone gadget. The minimum package includes an ENERGY STAR certified smart thermostat, connected lighting, and monitoring or control of plug loads. The system should make consumer energy information available and can facilitate schedules, suggest actions from usage patterns, and automate controls using occupancy.

Accuracy, data, and troubleshooting
The monitor does not match the bill
First check that both totals cover the same start and end times, use the same unit, and include or exclude solar generation consistently. Then verify CT direction, phase configuration, meter connection, and tariff settings. A utility bill can include estimated reads, rounding, or adjustments that are absent from an app’s live estimate.
A device label is wrong
Watch several on/off cycles, rename the label, and test the suspected appliance with a reporting plug. Variable-speed compressors and simultaneous loads are common causes of incorrect automatic identification.
Data disappears or stops updating
Check the monitor’s power, network signal, account status, firmware, and cloud-service notice. Preserve exported data before resetting the device. A utility integration may show gaps during a communications outage even though the meter retained the readings.

Current availability of Sense hardware and utility integrations
Sense’s support notice says it stopped selling new panel-installed Home Energy Monitors starting December 31, 2025, while existing monitors remain supported. Current marketplace stock, warranty terms, and panel compatibility can therefore vary. Sense also says eligible utility customers may receive its app through a Sense-enabled smart meter without extra hardware or a monthly subscription; utility rollouts occur in phases. Check your utility portal and the current product or support documentation before relying on a particular installation path.
Safety checklist
- Never open an energized electrical panel or touch service conductors to install a monitor.
- Use a licensed electrician for CT-clamp or panel wiring and request confirmation of local-code compliance.
- Confirm the monitor supports your panel, voltage, phase, solar, battery, EV, and heat-pump configuration.
- Keep smart plugs and strips below their continuous and startup ratings; inspect for heat, damage, or loose connections.
- Do not automate refrigeration, medical, life-safety, security, or other essential equipment without a documented safe operating plan.
- Recheck settings after a router, utility meter, tariff, or household-occupancy change.
A practical decision in one minute
Choose a utility smart-meter integration when your utility offers interval data and you want the least hardware. Choose a panel monitor when you own the home and need a continuous whole-house baseline, circuit context, or solar and EV visibility—and budget for professional installation. Choose an energy-reporting smart plug when the question concerns one appliance, you rent, or you want to validate an app’s device label. In every case, keep a seven-day baseline, change one controllable load, and judge success by comparable kWh data rather than by a promised percentage.
