Clicks are only one observable interaction. A reliable PPC measurement system combines data-driven attribution for path credit, view-through and engaged-view reporting for impression-led outcomes, cross-device and modeled conversions for journeys that switch devices, offline conversion imports for CRM and sales outcomes, and randomized incrementality tests for causal lift.
Why click totals cannot explain every conversion
A click proves that someone interacted with an ad, but it does not prove that the click caused the sale or that every valuable interaction produced a click. A prospect may see a display or video ad, search later on another device, speak with a sales representative, and complete the purchase in a store. Measuring only click-through conversions drops those stages from the report.
Start by separating the questions you need to answer:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Path credit: Which ads and interactions appeared on conversion paths?
- Impression influence: Did a conversion follow an ad view without an interaction?
- Device continuity: Did the journey begin on one device and finish on another?
- Business outcome: Did the lead become qualified revenue, a phone sale, or a store transaction?
- Causal lift: Would the sale have happened without the advertising?
No single report answers all five questions. Use each method for the question it can actually observe.

The measurement methods and the questions they answer
| Method | Question answered | Sales scope | Observation basis | Typical operating pattern |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Last-click attribution | Which final recorded interaction preceded the conversion? | Tracked online conversions | Direct, rule-based | Always-on reporting; simple but ignores earlier touches |
| Data-driven attribution (DDA) | How should credit be distributed across observed paths? | Eligible online conversions across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display and Demand Gen | Modeled from account-specific conversion paths | Always-on fractional credit |
| View-through and engaged-view reporting | What happened after an impression or qualifying video engagement without a click? | Display and video conversions | Impression or engagement records | Diagnostic reporting alongside click-through conversions |
| Cross-device and modeled conversions | Did an ad interaction on one device lead to a conversion on another? | Online conversions spanning devices | Direct and modeled signals, depending on eligibility and consent | Platform reporting columns |
| Offline conversion imports | Which ads led to qualified leads, phone sales or closed revenue? | CRM and other offline outcomes | First-party identifiers matched back to ad interactions | Batch or automated CRM uploads |
| Incrementality or lift experiments | What additional outcome did advertising cause? | Online, offline or aggregated geographic outcomes, depending on design | Randomized holdout or geo comparison | Periodic tests for major budget decisions |
| Store-sales measurement | How did media relate to in-store transactions? | Retail sales in supported markets | Ad interactions, store visits, surveys, transaction data, partnerships or receipts | Eligibility- and market-dependent reporting |
How do I measure conversions that happen after an impression?
Keep view-through conversions separate from click-through conversions. Google defines a view-through conversion as one that occurs after someone views an ad without interacting with it. For Display, the last viewable impression receives credit. Google’s Active View definition treats an impression as viewable when at least 50% of the ad is on screen for at least one second.
In reporting, preserve the conversion window and viewability rule used for the column. Do not add view-through totals blindly to click-through totals: the populations and attribution rules differ, and combining them can inflate apparent performance. Use view-through and engaged-view fields as separate diagnostics, then compare their pattern with later searches, direct traffic and revenue.

Practical checks for impression-led reporting
- Record whether the conversion came from a click, a view, or a qualifying video engagement.
- Document the conversion window, timezone and campaign type.
- Check reach and frequency; a large view-through count with very broad exposure may indicate correlation rather than persuaded buyers.
- Compare impression-led results with an incrementality test before reallocating a large budget.
Which PPC touchpoint actually caused the sale?
Use attribution to describe how credit is distributed, not to claim causation. Last click assigns the conversion to the final recorded interaction. Data-driven attribution evaluates observed paths and assigns fractional credit according to how interactions relate to conversion outcomes. Google says DDA can evaluate clicks and video engagements across Search, Shopping, YouTube, Display and Demand Gen.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDDA is account-specific. Google’s current help guidance recommends at least 200 conversions and 2,000 ad interactions in 30 days for stronger analysis, although the model can operate with less data. Treat the threshold as a confidence guideline, not a guarantee that every account or segment is statistically stable.
How to use DDA without losing a baseline
- Export last-click and DDA results for the same conversion actions and attribution windows.
- Compare campaign, ad-group and keyword shifts rather than comparing only account totals.
- Investigate large changes in credited value before changing bids; they may reflect path differences, consent changes or modeled volume.
- Keep one primary business conversion and label micro-conversions separately so low-value actions do not steer revenue optimization.
How do I attribute phone and CRM sales to ads?
Import the outcome that represents business value, not just the first form submission. Suitable offline conversions can include qualified leads, sales-representative closes, phone sales and closed-won revenue. The Google Ads API supports importing offline conversions to connect ad interactions with sales completed away from the website.
For enhanced conversions for leads, pass hashed first-party identifiers such as email address, phone number or mailing address. Maintain a stable lead identifier from the ad landing page through the CRM, define deduplication rules, and send the conversion value and event time when the lead reaches the chosen stage.

Offline measurement checklist
- Choose one or more CRM stages that reflect real commercial value.
- Capture consent and document how identifiers are normalized and hashed.
- Prevent duplicate uploads when a lead changes stages or is imported again.
- Use the same currency, timezone and conversion-time definition across the CRM, analytics platform and ad account.
- Track upload errors, match rates and the delay between the ad interaction and the CRM outcome.
How do I attribute store sales to ads?
Retailers must reconcile online media with offline transactions explicitly. Where available and eligible, store-sales measurement can use ad interactions, store visits, surveys, transaction data, partnerships and receipts. Eligibility, supported geography and required data sources vary, so confirm those conditions before publishing store ROAS.
Keep store transactions distinct from online conversions. A store sale may be reported on a different time basis and may use aggregated or modeled matching. State the market, data source, reporting window and whether the result is directly observed or modeled.

Attribution models estimate credit among observed or modeled interactions. Incrementality asks a different question: how many outcomes occurred because advertising was present? Use a randomized holdout or geo lift experiment when the decision involves channel-level budgets or incremental ROAS.
Designing a useful lift test
- Define one primary outcome, such as qualified revenue or store transactions, before launch.
- Randomly assign eligible users, regions or comparable geo cells to treatment and control, or use a defensible geo-experiment design.
- Predefine the analysis window, minimum detectable effect, exclusions and success threshold.
- Keep other major changes—pricing, landing pages, promotions and tracking settings—documented during the test.
- Compare the measured lift with platform-attributed ROAS; the totals are expected to differ because one is causal and the other is modeled credit.
A practical implementation sequence
- Define the outcome: Select one primary business result and classify micro-conversions separately from revenue outcomes.
- Audit collection: Check tags, consent signals, deduplication, conversion windows and timezone.
- Enable path attribution: Turn on DDA where eligible, then compare it with last click for campaign and keyword shifts.
- Add diagnostic columns: Report view-through, engaged-view and cross-device conversions separately.
- Connect the CRM: Pass a stable first-party lead identifier and import qualified or closed-won outcomes with values.
- Validate retail inputs: For stores, verify eligibility, geography and transaction-data requirements before reporting results.
- Test causality: Design a randomized holdout or geo lift test for the largest budget decisions and predefine the metric and analysis window.
- Reconcile systems: Compare platform, analytics and CRM totals using the same conversion-time basis and documented attribution windows. Google notes that “All conversions (by conv. time)” can improve comparisons with third-party systems.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| View-through conversions are added to click conversions and ROAS jumps | Different conversion populations were combined | Keep view-through, engaged-view and click-through columns separate and report their windows |
| CRM revenue is lower than platform conversions | The platform counts an earlier event, while the CRM counts a later qualified or closed stage | Align conversion actions, event definitions and conversion-time basis |
| Cross-device totals change after consent or tagging updates | Modeled eligibility and first-party signals changed | Annotate the change, document modeled versus observed values, and avoid comparing unlike periods |
| DDA shifts credit dramatically between campaigns | Path mix, data volume or conversion definitions changed | Check the 30-day interaction and conversion context, then inspect paths before changing bids |
| Attributed ROAS is positive but a budget increase produces no sales lift | Attribution credit included conversions that would have happened anyway | Run a randomized incrementality or lift test |
| Store results cannot be reproduced | Market eligibility, transaction source or matching rules were not recorded | Document geography, source, window and modeled or direct status for every report |
How to read the result responsibly
Present a layered scorecard rather than one blended number. Show click-through conversions and revenue, view-through and engaged-view conversions, cross-device and modeled volume, imported CRM outcomes, store transactions where eligible, and experimental incremental lift. Label each metric’s observation basis, conversion window and time basis. That lets decision-makers see both the path the platform credited and the additional outcome a controlled test demonstrated.
