Google Maps can estimate the length of a planned walk, but its Measure distance tool does not record how far you actually walk. Add map points to trace a route manually, or use walking directions in Google My Maps to follow mapped pedestrian paths.
Choose the right kind of distance

Google’s Android instructions describe measuring between map points, including a straight-line example. A measurement that follows a winding street or trail requires you to add points along its bends.
Measure a walking route in Google Maps on Android
- Open Google Maps and touch and hold a point on the map. Choose a spot that is not a place name or icon.
- Tap Measure distance.
- Move the map so the black circle sits over the next point on your intended route.
- Tap Add point. Repeat at bends and wherever the route changes direction.
- Read the accumulated distance, shown in miles or kilometers. Use the undo or clear controls if you need to correct or restart the measurement.
More points can make your manually drawn measurement follow the route’s shape more closely. The result remains a map measurement: it will not change to reflect detours, missed turns, or other movement during your walk.

Measure a line on a computer
- Open Google Maps and right-click the starting point.
- Select Measure distance.
- Click successive points along the line you want to measure, adding points at bends.
- Read the total, displayed in miles or kilometers.
Google’s computer instructions note that the feature is unavailable in Lite mode.

Use Google My Maps for a route along mapped paths
If you want a planned walking route rather than a manually traced map line, Google My Maps supports a directions layer and a separate tool for measuring a line with bends.
- On a computer, open Google My Maps and create or open a map.
- Add a directions layer, enter a starting point and destination, and choose Walking.
- Add destinations if you need a multi-stop trip, then inspect or drag the trip path to adjust it.
- To measure a manually drawn line instead, use the map’s measurement tool and click the start, each bend, and the end. My Maps displays the line’s distance.
See Google’s instructions for saving directions on My Maps. Walking directions are based on mapped networks, not a guarantee that every segment has a clear or usable pedestrian path. Google’s walking-route documentation notes that results may not include clear pedestrian or bicycle paths in every area. Check the proposed route before relying on it, especially where access or accessibility matters.

What the result can—and cannot—tell you
- Measure distance totals the points you place on the map. It does not automatically snap your points to sidewalks or walking paths.
- Walking directions estimate a path using mapped walking routes where available. The result depends on the map’s coverage, and you can review or adjust the route.
- Actual distance walked is not established by measuring a planned line or route. The Google Maps help steps cited here do not describe live tracking of your movement.
Choose manual measurement when you want to trace a specific line on the map. Use walking directions when you want a route through the pedestrian network. Neither method, by itself, confirms how far you walked in practice.
