Use a contactless magnetic measurement when preserving the specimen is the priority. For a large-area high-temperature-superconductor (HTS) film, the most directly specified approach is an inductive scan: drive a small AC coil above the surface, detect the nonlinear third-harmonic voltage, and repeat the threshold measurement at several frequencies. The frequency dependence lets you state an electric-field criterion and estimate local critical-current density or sheet current without soldering leads or forcing the whole sample into a resistive state.
This does not produce the same quantity as a conventional transport test. Transport testing reports a criterion-based critical current, Ic, for the complete current path. Contactless techniques generally report critical-current density (Jc), sheet current, or an effective shielding current derived from a field response and a geometry model. Report the quantity, criterion, temperature, fields, dimensions, and model with every result.
Start by defining which “critical current” you need
The phrase critical current can describe two related but different measurements. Defining it first prevents a non-destructive magnetic result from being mistaken for a device rating.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Transport critical current (Ic)
A transport test sends current through the specimen and measures voltage over a defined gauge length. The reported Ic is the current at which the measured electric field reaches a selected criterion. Because the criterion is part of the definition, two laboratories can obtain different Ic values from the same conductor if they use different electric-field limits, gauge lengths, temperatures, or magnetic fields.

This is the appropriate measurement when the question is, “What current can this tape or device carry before its voltage exceeds my limit?” It requires current contacts and voltage taps and can heat a marginal or damaged specimen. A non-destructive estimate should not be presented as a transport rating unless its criterion, geometry model, and correlation with transport have been demonstrated.
Inductive or magnetic critical-current density (Jc)
An inductive method applies a changing magnetic field and measures the specimen’s response without an electrical connection. The result is usually local Jc, a sheet current (Jcd for film thickness d), or an effective shielding current. It describes how currents circulate in the region sensed by the coil or imaging system; it is not automatically the current that can flow from one terminal of a complete device to the other.
For a granular material, state whether the estimate is intragrain, intergranular, local, or global. Weak links can limit the current-carrying length scale, so the magnetic value may correspond to a path smaller than the physical sample.

Third-harmonic inductive scanning: the preferred film-screening workflow
IEC 61788-17:2021 specifies measurements of local critical-current density and its distribution in large-area HTS films by an inductive method using third-harmonic voltages. The coil is small compared with the area being mapped and is positioned just above the film. A sinusoidal drive current creates an AC magnetic field. In the Meissner or reversible regime, the pickup response is predominantly linear; once shielding currents become nonlinear, a third-harmonic component appears.

Set up the scan
- Stabilize the specimen. Bring the film to the target temperature and allow the substrate, mount, coil, and wiring to reach thermal equilibrium. Record temperature rather than relying only on a cryostat set point.
- Measure geometry. Record film thickness, lateral dimensions, coil dimensions, coil-to-surface lift-off, and scan coordinates. Thickness enters the conversion from sheet current to volume current density, so an uncertain thickness creates a proportional uncertainty in Jc.
- Position and calibrate the coil. Keep the coil height and orientation constant during a map. Calibrate the drive-current monitor and pickup chain with a reference or a validated geometry model, and document the phase and gain settings of the lock-in measurement.
- Drive below the damage threshold. Increase AC drive amplitude in small increments while monitoring the third-harmonic signal and temperature. The aim is to identify the onset of nonlinearity, not to hold the specimen at a high dissipative current for an extended time.
- Detect the third harmonic. If the drive is at frequency f, measure the pickup voltage at 3f. Reject electrical feedthrough and vibration signals by checking phase, repeating with the coil lifted away from the film, and verifying that the response changes with the specimen in the expected way.
- Find the threshold at multiple frequencies. Repeat the threshold-drive measurement at several frequencies. The frequency dependence supplies the electric-field criterion used to estimate local Jc; a single frequency cannot establish that criterion by itself.
- Scan the area. Move the coil on a defined grid and record the threshold, frequency set, temperature, lift-off, and coordinates at every point. The result is a map, not merely one average value.
- Check reversibility. Repeat selected points while increasing and decreasing the drive. A reversible signal with negligible temperature rise supports a non-destructive measurement; drift, hysteresis caused by heating, or a changing baseline requires investigation before mapping.
What the IEC method does and does not cover
IEC 61788-17:2021 reports a result-based sheet-current range of 200 A/m to 32 kA/m and a resolution of 100 A/m for the method described. Its stated target relative combined standard uncertainty is less than 10% for the absolute value of Jc and less than 5% when evaluating homogeneity. Those figures apply within the standard’s method scope; they are not a guarantee for an uncalibrated home-built setup.
The method intrinsically measures critical sheet current, Jcd, and is specified for measurements without a DC background field. If your application operates in a DC field, you need a method and calibration validated for that field condition rather than silently applying the zero-DC-field conversion.
AC susceptibility: a flexible contactless alternative
In an AC-susceptibility measurement, an excitation coil applies a sinusoidal magnetic field and a pickup coil measures the in-phase and out-of-phase response. A lock-in amplifier resolves the complex susceptibility while the specimen remains electrically isolated. The response can reveal critical-current density, transition behavior, penetration-depth effects, and pinning information.
Convert susceptibility to Jc only with the stated model
For thin films, one published model gives
Jc = 1.9 Ha|χ′|0.69/d.
Here, Ha is the AC field amplitude, χ′ is the real part of the susceptibility, and d is film thickness. The relation applies only over the susceptibility interval and fully penetrated conditions discussed by its authors. It is not a universal conversion. Finite London penetration depth, demagnetizing effects, coil geometry, and any DC background field must be included or ruled out before using it.

Practical AC-susceptibility checks
- Measure the empty-coil and substrate backgrounds separately.
- Calibrate the excitation field at the specimen position, not only at the coil terminals.
- Record amplitude and frequency for every susceptibility trace.
- Check that the specimen is fully penetrated if the selected model requires that condition.
- Repeat at more than one amplitude to distinguish reversible response from heating or weak-link losses.
Hysteresis, Hall probes, and magneto-optical imaging
Magnetic hysteresis measures magnetization while the applied field is swept. A Hall probe or magneto-optical camera instead measures the local field distribution. The measured field or magnetization is inverted with a Bean or another critical-state model to estimate shielding-current density.
What these methods reveal
- Hysteresis: useful for field-dependent bulk or film behavior and for comparing trapped-flux states.
- Hall mapping: exposes local current crowding, defects, and nonuniform penetration.
- Magneto-optical imaging: provides a visual map of flux fronts and current-carrying regions when the indicator and optical calibration are suitable.
For plate-like specimens, the inferred sheet current and current-carrying length scale can differ from the physical dimensions. A weak link may make the effective length smaller than the sample itself. Transport and magnetization estimates can agree at low fields yet diverge as field and temperature rise because thermally activated flux motion relaxes shielding currents. Report the sweep rate, waiting time, field orientation, temperature, demagnetization treatment, and the critical-state model used.
Monitoring long insulated tape in a changing field
A changing-field magnetic system can monitor an insulated superconducting conductor without attaching electrical contacts along its length. One IEEE study demonstrated quality monitoring over more than 500 m of tape and used frequency dependence to reconstruct the voltage-current relation. This approach is suited to production or long-length screening, where a local coil scan would be too slow.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The reconstructed relation remains a system-dependent estimate. Validate it against a known section of conductor, document the field waveform and scan speed, and identify the spatial averaging length before treating a local indication as a defect location or a transport specification.

Control the variables that change the answer
Superconductor measurements are highly condition-dependent. Record these variables in the data file and in the reported result:
- Temperature and stabilization time.
- DC field, if present, and AC field amplitude.
- Field orientation relative to the film, tape face, or crystal axes.
- Excitation frequency and sweep rate.
- Specimen length, width, thickness, substrate, and orientation.
- Coil diameter, lift-off, scan pitch, and pickup calibration.
- Demagnetization correction and the inversion or critical-state model.
- Electric-field criterion, when a method derives one from frequency dependence.
- Whether the result is local, intragrain, intergranular, sheet-current, or whole-sample.
Thermal stabilization deserves special attention: even a contactless experiment can dissipate energy through flux motion. Track temperature during amplitude sweeps and pauses, and allow the specimen to return to equilibrium before repeating a point.
How to validate a result without sacrificing the sample
- Repeat at several amplitudes. The inferred value should remain stable over a low-heating operating range.
- Repeat at several frequencies. Use the frequency dependence only where the selected method defines how it maps to an electric-field criterion.
- Reverse the scan or field history. Large history dependence can indicate trapped flux, weak links, or irreversible heating rather than a simple material constant.
- Measure a reference. A reference specimen or validated geometry standard catches gain, phase, lift-off, and coil-position errors.
- Compare a limited number of points with transport when possible. Use a sacrificial companion or a specimen with an established contact pattern. Treat the comparison as a correlation study, not proof that every magnetic map equals transport Ic.
- Stop on warning signs. Stop increasing drive if temperature rises, the baseline drifts, the response becomes strongly hysteretic, or the specimen does not return to its initial signal after a rest period.
When a transport test is unavoidable
If the deliverable is a certified current rating for a short straight REBCO tape, use the applicable transport standard and accept that it is a contacted test. IEC 61788-26:2020 specifies DC critical-current testing for short straight REBCO tapes. Its standard conditions include liquid nitrogen, no external magnetic field, a specimen length below 300 mm, critical current below 300 A, and an n-value above 5. Those conditions describe that standard’s scope; they do not describe every transport test or every operating environment.
Use current leads and voltage taps with adequate strain relief, ramp slowly enough to control heating, and define the voltage criterion before the run. If preserving the original specimen matters more than obtaining a terminal-current rating, perform the contactless characterization first and reserve transport testing for a companion or sacrificial sample.

Common failure modes and fixes
The third harmonic is present before the film is installed
Electrical pickup, amplifier distortion, or a nonlinear drive amplifier can generate a false third harmonic. Measure the empty coil, change cable routing, reduce drive amplitude, and verify the signal phase and scaling with a linear reference.
Results change when the coil height changes slightly
Lift-off strongly changes the field coupling. Use a mechanical spacer or height sensor, map the actual surface profile, and include lift-off in the geometry model. Do not compare scans made at different heights as though they were identical.
Magnetic and transport values disagree
First check that the quantities and criteria are the same. Then examine field orientation, temperature, demagnetization, weak links, current-path length, and thermally activated flux motion. Agreement at low field does not guarantee agreement at higher field or temperature.
Recommended Free Tools
The inferred Jc is unstable during a scan
Look for thermal drift, changing flux history, insufficient settling time, coil vibration, and an invalid full-penetration assumption. Repeat after a controlled field reset and use a lower excitation amplitude.
A map shows a low-current region but the average looks normal
Check spatial resolution and scan pitch before averaging. A local defect can be diluted by a large coil footprint. Report both the local minimum and the averaging procedure rather than replacing the map with one whole-sample number.
How to report a non-destructive critical-current measurement
A reproducible report should let another laboratory reconstruct both the physical experiment and the interpretation. Include:
- Material, geometry, thickness, substrate, and specimen identification.
- Method and instrument arrangement, including coil dimensions, lift-off, pickup calibration, and lock-in settings.
- Temperature, stabilization time, field orientation, DC field, AC amplitude, frequency set, and sweep history.
- Measured observable: third-harmonic voltage, complex susceptibility, magnetization, Hall field, or optical field.
- Conversion model, demagnetization treatment, penetration assumptions, and any full-penetration condition.
- Whether the output is Ic, Jc, Jcd, shielding current, or an effective local value.
- Electric-field criterion, if established, and uncertainty or repeatability.
- Evidence that heating was negligible and that repeated scans were reversible.
A concise result might therefore read: “At 77 K, zero DC field, the third-harmonic inductive scan produced a local sheet-current map of Jcd using the stated coil geometry, lift-off, frequency set, threshold definition, and uncertainty.” That wording makes clear what was measured without claiming a terminal transport current that the experiment did not establish.
