To get the longest working time and service life from a RIDGID 18V NUKE battery, match pack capacity to the job, keep the tool from stalling, charge only within the specified temperature range, and store the pack partly charged rather than full. For sustained, high-load cutting, the 4.0Ah AC840041 MAX Output EXP is the stronger fit; for intermittent work where portability matters, the compact 2.0Ah AC8400802 is the practical choice. Neither battery has a universal runtime: material, blade condition, technique, and load change consumption substantially.
Choose the right RIDGID battery for the work
Amp-hour capacity is a useful guide to stored energy, but it is not the only factor that determines how a NUKE tool behaves. High-load tools also need a pack that can deliver current without excessive heat or an early protection shutdown. Choose the battery before the job starts instead of treating every 18V pack as interchangeable in practice.

The 4.0Ah label does not mean every tool will run exactly twice as long as it does on a 2.0Ah pack. A saw drawing high current, a dull blade, dense material, or repeated stalls can erase the expected difference. Conversely, a lightly loaded tool may not need the larger pack. Use the 4.0Ah MAX Output pack when the job is likely to keep the motor under load for extended periods; use the 2.0Ah pack when short work cycles and reduced carry weight are the priority.

What RIDGID runtime figures actually mean
RIDGID lists “Superior runtime with 475 linear feet per charge” for the RNKSCS01B NUKE circular saw. That number is an application claim for that saw, not a promise for every NUKE tool, material, blade, operator, or battery condition. Linear feet can change with material thickness, density, moisture, blade type and sharpness, feed rate, and how often the saw is stopped and restarted.

Likewise, the AC8400802 page’s “up to 2X runtime and 2X longer life” wording compares the pack with standard lithium-ion batteries under conditions RIDGID controls. “Up to” is a ceiling, not a guaranteed result. There is no independent cycle-life figure established for these packs here, so do not plan a replacement schedule around a specific number of charge cycles.
Prepare the tool and pack before cutting
- Inspect the housing and contacts. Do not install a pack with cracks, deformation, heavy contamination, or damaged terminals. Wipe dirt from the battery and tool contacts with a clean, dry cloth; keep oil and grease away from the housing and terminals.
- Use a suitable, sharp accessory. A dull or incorrect blade makes the motor work harder and converts more battery energy into heat. Follow the NUKE tool’s instructions for blade type, diameter, and adjustment.
- Clear the work area. Binding, pinching, and repeated starts are high-current events. Support the work so the cut does not close on the blade, and keep the shoe or base stable.
- Start with a cool, adequately charged pack. If a pack was just used heavily, let it return toward room temperature before charging. If the pack is nearly depleted, swapping to a charged pack is preferable to repeatedly forcing the tool through a stall.
- Plan swaps around natural pauses. A second charged pack prevents the operator from continuing with a pack that is already hot or triggering protection repeatedly. Do not leave a removed pack in direct sun, near a heater, or in a vehicle.
Work technique that stretches each charge
Let the blade do the cutting
Apply steady feed pressure rather than forcing the saw. Excessive pressure raises current draw and heat while often slowing the cut. If the motor note drops sharply, ease pressure until it recovers. Keep the blade aligned with the cut; side loading and twisting increase friction.

Prevent binding and repeated restarts
Binding can make a battery-powered motor demand a short burst of very high current. Release the trigger, withdraw the tool safely, correct the work support or cut line, and restart. Repeatedly cycling the trigger against a jam wastes energy and can activate the tool’s protective electronics.
Use the shortest practical duty cycle
For a series of small cuts, group setup tasks so the tool is not idling between operations. Turn the tool off while measuring, clamping, or repositioning. On long cuts, maintain a consistent pace instead of alternating between hard pushes and pauses.

Keep cooling paths open
Do not cover ventilation openings with clothing, debris, or a workpiece. Brush dust away from the tool after use. Heat accumulated in the motor, electronics, and battery reduces efficiency and can cause an earlier shutdown even when charge remains.
How to charge a RIDGID 18V NUKE battery safely
Use only the specified RIDGID charger for the pack. RIDGID’s instructions specify a charging range of 32°F to 120°F (0°C to 49°C). Keep the charger and battery dry, and leave at least six inches of clearance around the charger for airflow.

- Move the charger to a dry, ventilated location away from combustible materials, vehicles, and outdoor exposure.
- Check that the pack, charger, and contacts are clean and undamaged. Never bridge the terminals with a tool, key, or other metal object.
- If the pack is hot from use or cold from storage, place it on the charger only as directed. Charging will wait until the battery returns to the acceptable temperature range; do not heat or cool it artificially.
- Insert the pack fully and observe the charger’s status indicator. Do not cover the charger while it is operating.
- When charging is complete, remove the battery from the charger for best life rather than leaving it installed indefinitely.
- Allow a recently charged pack to cool before putting it straight into a high-load tool in a hot environment.
A hot or cold battery may physically be placed on the charger, but the charger is designed to delay charging until the pack is within the permitted temperature range. That delay is normal protection, not evidence that the pack is defective. If charging does not begin after the battery has reached a normal indoor temperature, inspect the contacts and try the specified charger with another known-good RIDGID 18V pack; persistent failure requires RIDGID service guidance.

RIDGID 18V electronics can shut a tool down to protect the cells under certain conditions, including an overloaded or depleted battery. Treat a sudden stop as a protection event first, not as permission to keep pulling the trigger.

- Release the trigger and remove the tool from the material without forcing the blade.
- Check for binding, an incorrect adjustment, excessive feed pressure, or a dull accessory.
- Wait briefly for the tool and pack to cool if they are hot.
- Resume with lighter feed pressure only after the obstruction and technique issue are corrected.
- If the tool does not reset, remove the depleted pack and recharge it with the specified RIDGID charger. Do not keep cycling the trigger to make it restart.
A shutdown that repeats with a fully charged, room-temperature pack and an unloaded tool points to a possible pack, tool, or charger fault. Stop using visibly damaged equipment and seek RIDGID service rather than opening the pack.

For storage longer than 30 days, RIDGID recommends storing the pack below 80°F (27°C), away from moisture, at 30% to 50% charge. Recharge it normally every six months. This is different from the state used for a day’s work: a pack can be fully charged before a job, but long-term storage at full charge is not the recommended condition.
- Finish the workday and let the battery cool to a normal indoor temperature.
- If the pack will be unused for more than 30 days, adjust it to roughly the 30%-50% range rather than leaving it full.
- Place it in a dry indoor location below 80°F, protected from direct sun and freezing conditions.
- Do not store or charge it in a vehicle, shed exposed to weather, or outdoors.
- Every six months, charge the pack as normal, then return it to the storage range if it will remain unused.
- Keep packs separated from loose nails, screws, keys, coins, and other conductive objects that could bridge the terminals.
Do not disassemble, crush, modify, puncture, or incinerate a battery pack. If the housing is swollen, cracked, leaking, unusually hot, or has suffered an impact, isolate it from flammable materials and contact RIDGID or an appropriate battery-recycling service for disposal instructions.

- After dusty work: Brush or wipe dust from the pack, tool interface, and charger vents. Keep moisture out of the contacts.
- Before every installation: Check that the locking mechanism engages fully and that no debris prevents the pack from seating.
- During wet conditions: Keep the pack dry. A water-resistant jobsite practice does not make the battery safe to submerge or charge while wet.
- When transporting: Protect the terminals from metal objects and avoid dropping or crushing the pack.
- For charger airflow: Maintain the six-inch clearance around the charger instead of placing it in a toolbox, on soft fabric, or against a wall.
Diagnose shorter-than-expected runtime

A practical jobsite routine
Before leaving for the job
- Select AC840041 for sustained high-load work or AC8400802 when compact carry weight and short work cycles matter.
- Charge packs with the specified RIDGID charger, then remove them when complete.
- Inspect the blade, guards, pack housing, and contacts.
- Pack a second charged battery for work that cannot pause safely.
During the job
- Use steady feed pressure and stop immediately if the blade binds.
- Keep vents and charger airflow clear of dust and fabric.
- Swap a hot pack instead of forcing it through repeated protection shutdowns.
- Store removed packs in a shaded, dry location away from metal objects.
After the job
- Wipe dirt and grease from the pack and tool interface.
- Let a hot battery cool before charging.
- Charge packs needed for the next shift; place packs that will sit longer than 30 days at 30%-50% charge.
- Record any repeated shutdown, charging delay, or visible damage so the pack can be serviced before the next job.
Bottom line for choosing and caring for a NUKE battery
Use the 4.0Ah AC840041 MAX Output EXP when sustained output, thermal management, and fewer battery swaps matter most. Choose the compact 2.0Ah AC8400802 for intermittent work and easier carrying, while treating RIDGID’s “up to 2X” runtime and life statement as a manufacturer claim rather than a guaranteed test result. Whichever pack you use, the biggest gains come from preventing blade binding, avoiding excessive feed pressure, respecting the 32°F-120°F charging range, removing the pack after charging, and storing it at 30%-50% charge below 80°F when it will be idle for more than 30 days.
