The correct replacement battery is the one specified by the device—not merely the one that fits. Copy the complete battery code from the manual or compartment, then verify its format, chemistry, voltage, polarity, and any instructions about using cells as a set. A similar-looking battery can be too thick, too small, electrically unsuitable, or unsafe even when it slides into the compartment.
Start with the device’s specification
Use the device manual, the label inside the battery compartment, or the manufacturer’s instructions as the authority. Look for the full model code, such as LR03, AA, CR2032, or another designation. Also note the required chemistry, voltage, polarity, and whether the device requires cells to be installed together.
Do not identify a replacement from a photograph, a broad description such as “small round battery,” or the fact that another cell fits. Battery names encode dimensions and chemistry in different ways, and the same physical format may have several market names. The device’s stated designation takes priority over a retailer’s category or a visual match.

What to record before buying
- Exact battery code, including every letter and number.
- Format, such as cylindrical AA/AAA/C/D, coin or button cell, or a specialty pack.
- Chemistry or type, such as alkaline, zinc-carbon, lithium, or rechargeable nickel-metal hydride.
- Nominal voltage when the device specifies it.
- Polarity marks and the required number and arrangement of cells.
- Any instruction that limits rechargeable cells, requires a particular performance rating, or prohibits mixing.
If the code is missing or illegible, find the device manual or contact its manufacturer. Do not infer compatibility solely from compartment dimensions.

How common battery size codes work
Size labels can come from different standards. Panasonic’s dry-battery guidance gives these common crosswalks for alkaline and zinc-carbon cells:

Panasonic gives a concrete example of why labels can be confusing: a cell measuring 10.5 mm by 44.5 mm may be called LR03 under IEC naming or AAA under ANSI naming, depending on the standard and market. Those labels describe a size relationship, not permission to substitute any battery with a similar appearance.
Letters are meaningful
In common cylindrical codes, the prefix helps identify chemistry. For example, LR03 is an alkaline designation, while R03 is a zinc-carbon designation for the same general AAA format. The device may be designed for one type, both types, or a different chemistry entirely. Read the device instructions rather than assuming the prefix is optional.

Coin cells are especially easy to confuse because many have the same silver, round appearance. Match the complete model number, not just “coin cell” or the first two letters.
Reading CR2032
Panasonic explains the common CR2032 code as follows:

- C identifies lithium manganese dioxide chemistry.
- R indicates a round cell.
- 20 indicates a diameter of 20 mm.
- 32 indicates a height of 3.2 mm.
Energizer lists CR2032 as a 3 V lithium coin cell. The dimensions in the code affect both physical clearance and electrical contact pressure, so a different number is not automatically an acceptable replacement.
Why CR2025, CR2016, and CR1616 are not interchangeable by default
Panasonic cautions that a CR2025 can be too thick for a compartment designed for a CR2016. It also notes that a CR1616 can be too small to make reliable contact in a compartment designed for a CR2016. These examples illustrate two different failure modes: a thicker cell may prevent the holder from closing or apply excessive pressure, while a smaller-diameter cell may intermittently disconnect.
Use the designation printed by the device manufacturer. Energizer’s CR2032 guidance likewise recommends using the cell designation specified by the device manufacturer rather than treating coin batteries as interchangeable simply because one can be made to fit.
Check chemistry and voltage, not just dimensions
A battery’s chemistry controls its nominal voltage, discharge behavior, and suitability for the device’s load. Physical compatibility does not establish electrical compatibility.
Alkaline cells
Energizer’s AAA alkaline datasheet, identified as form LR03EU0120 and dating from the 2020-era document, lists a nominal voltage of 1.5 V. Alkaline cells are widely used in devices designed for standard disposable dry cells, but the device’s own instructions still determine whether they are permitted.

Zinc-carbon and manganese cells
Panasonic describes manganese cells as a broad choice for lower-current uses such as remote controls and clocks. In its general comparison, it describes alkaline cells as more suitable for higher-current uses such as camera flashes and radio-controlled cars. This is a manufacturer rule of thumb, not a guaranteed runtime ranking. Actual performance depends on the device, battery condition, discharge pattern, temperature, and the device’s cutoff voltage.

Panasonic states that its eneloop rechargeable cells have a nominal voltage of 1.2 V. Their dimensions follow IEC standards for equivalent dry-cell sizes, so a rechargeable AA or AAA may fit a compartment intended for that format. However, a 1.2 V rechargeable cell is not electrically identical to a 1.5 V alkaline cell. Use rechargeable cells only when the device allows them or its manufacturer explicitly says they are suitable.
Lithium coin cells
CR2032 is a 3 V lithium coin-cell format. Do not substitute another lithium coin-cell model merely because it has the same diameter or voltage. Thickness, diameter, contact geometry, charging behavior, and the device’s circuitry all matter.
A step-by-step matching procedure
- Locate the specification. Open the battery compartment and read its label. If the label is absent or unclear, consult the device manual or manufacturer. Record the complete code exactly.
- Identify the format. Decide whether the cell is a cylindrical AA, AAA, C, or D; a coin or button cell; or a specialty battery. For coin cells, retain every digit because the digits describe diameter and thickness.
- Confirm the chemistry. Check whether the specification calls for alkaline, zinc-carbon, lithium, rechargeable nickel-metal hydride, or another type. A familiar size name does not identify chemistry by itself.
- Confirm nominal voltage. Compare the replacement’s stated voltage with the device instructions. For reference, the cited manufacturer specifications list 1.5 V nominal for an Energizer alkaline AAA and 1.2 V nominal for Panasonic eneloop rechargeable cells.
- Compare dimensions and contacts. For cylindrical cells, check length and diameter when the device has a tight holder. For coin cells, match the exact model because a small difference in diameter or thickness can break contact or prevent closure.
- Check polarity. Match the positive and negative marks in the compartment. Do not rely on the direction in which the old battery happened to be removed if the markings are unclear; consult the manual.
- Check the set requirement. If the device uses two or more cells, follow its instructions about installing cells together. Use the same brand, type, and performance rating, and do not mix old and new cells or different chemistries.
- Buy only after all checks agree. If any item is uncertain, pause and obtain the manufacturer’s specification instead of using a physically convenient substitute.
Comparing likely replacement choices
When several candidates appear in a store, compare them against the device specification rather than against one another:

Where a device’s instructions do not establish compatibility, the correct entry in your decision process is “not established,” not “probably works.”

Installing multiple cells correctly
Devices that use several batteries depend on the cells working as a matched set. Before installation, inspect each cell for damage, leakage, swelling, corrosion, or a damaged wrapper. Do not use a compromised cell.
- Install every cell in the orientation shown by the polarity marks.
- Use cells with the same brand, type, and performance rating, as Panasonic advises.
- Do not combine an old cell with a new one.
- Do not mix alkaline, zinc-carbon, lithium, or rechargeable chemistries in the same set.
- Replace the set according to the device instructions rather than topping it up with a different cell later.
Mixing cells can create unequal discharge and may increase the chance of leakage or unreliable operation. If a device repeatedly drains one cell faster than the others, remove the set and investigate the device or contacts instead of replacing only the exhausted cell.

Coin-cell safety
Keep coin cells away from children. Energizer warns that swallowing a coin battery can cause serious injury or death and provides handling and disposal precautions with its CR2032 guidance. Store loose cells in their original packaging or another secure container, never where a child can access them.
Prevent short circuits
Keep batteries away from keys, coins, paper clips, and other conductive objects that can bridge the terminals. Do not carry loose coin cells in a pocket or drawer with metal objects. Leave protective packaging in place until the cell is needed.
Storage and disposal
Follow the package and local disposal instructions. Do not throw batteries into a fire, crush them, puncture them, or attempt to recharge a cell that is not labeled rechargeable. Remove batteries from equipment that will be stored for a long period when the device manufacturer recommends it, and keep the cells in a cool, dry place away from children and heat.

Troubleshooting a battery that fits but does not work
The device will not turn on
- Remove the battery and check that the model code matches the manual exactly.
- Recheck polarity against the compartment marks.
- Inspect the contacts for dirt, corrosion, bent springs, or loss of tension.
- Confirm that the replacement is not depleted and that any protective tab or shipping film has been removed.
- If several cells are used, replace them as a matched set and verify that no chemistry has been mixed.
If the exact specification and installation are correct but the device remains inactive, the fault may be in the contacts, switch, wiring, or device circuitry rather than in battery size.
The compartment will not close
Stop forcing it. A cell may be too thick, installed in the wrong orientation, or not the specified model. This is a common reason not to substitute a thicker coin cell such as CR2025 where the device calls for CR2016.
The device works intermittently
Intermittent operation can indicate inadequate contact from a cell with the wrong diameter or thickness, a loose holder, corrosion, or an exhausted cell. A smaller coin cell such as CR1616 may fail to maintain reliable contact in a CR2016 holder, according to Panasonic’s example. Verify the exact model before modifying the holder or adding pressure.

The device behaves strangely after switching to rechargeable cells
Check the nominal voltage specified by the device. Panasonic identifies eneloop rechargeable cells as 1.2 V nominal, while the cited Energizer alkaline AAA specification is 1.5 V nominal. A device designed around the higher voltage may not operate correctly with a lower-voltage rechargeable cell, even if the dimensions are equivalent.
Worked examples
Example: a remote control marked “2 × AAA”
“AAA” identifies the general format, but it does not by itself settle chemistry. Read the compartment or manual for wording such as LR03, alkaline, R03, or rechargeable. If it specifies LR03 alkaline, choose AAA/LR03 alkaline cells and install both with the indicated polarity. If it permits rechargeable cells, confirm the voltage and charging instructions before using them.
Example: a camera accessory calling for alkaline cells
Panasonic’s general guidance places camera flashes among higher-current uses for which alkaline cells are suitable. That guidance does not override the camera manufacturer’s instructions. Match the stated size and chemistry, replace the complete set, and do not assume a different chemistry will provide the same performance.
Example: a key fob marked CR2032
Buy a CR2032, not an unspecified “3 V coin battery.” The code identifies a 20 mm diameter and 3.2 mm height lithium manganese dioxide cell. A CR2025 or CR2016 may have a similar appearance but a different thickness, and Panasonic specifically warns that such differences can prevent proper fit or contact.

- Have you copied the complete code from the device or manual?
- Does the replacement use the required chemistry?
- Does its nominal voltage match the device’s permitted range?
- Do its diameter, thickness, length, and terminal style match?
- Will it fit without forcing the cover or bending contacts?
- Are the polarity marks clear?
- If multiple cells are used, are all replacements the same brand, type, and performance rating?
- Are you avoiding a mix of old and new cells or different chemistries?
- Can you store and dispose of the battery according to its package and local rules?
Bottom line
Match the exact battery designation in the device’s instructions, then verify chemistry, voltage, dimensions, polarity, and multi-cell requirements. LR03 and AAA can describe the same general size under different standards, but alkaline LR03, zinc-carbon R03, and rechargeable cells are not automatically equivalent. Coin cells demand even more precision: a CR2032, CR2025, CR2016, or CR1616 can differ enough in thickness or diameter to cause unsafe or unreliable operation. When the manufacturer’s specification is unclear, obtain it before installing a substitute.
