Choose a USB Bluetooth adapter by checking Windows compatibility, the features your devices need, the adapter’s exact hardware revision, and whether you have a suitable USB port—not by Bluetooth version number alone. First check whether your PC already has Bluetooth; if it does not, a USB adapter can add it to a Windows PC.
Microsoft’s Windows pairing guidance explains how to add a Bluetooth adapter. Once you know you need one, match the adapter to your PC and the keyboard, mouse, headset, controller, or other accessory you plan to connect.
Check whether your PC already has Bluetooth
Before buying an adapter, check whether Bluetooth is built into the PC. If it is, you may be able to pair your accessory without adding another radio. If it is not, a USB Bluetooth adapter is one way to add Bluetooth to a Windows PC.
To check in Windows, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices and look for a Bluetooth control. You can also open Device Manager and check for a Bluetooth category or radio. If the Bluetooth control is missing, that alone does not prove the PC lacks Bluetooth; the radio could be disabled or its driver could be missing. Check the PC maker’s specifications and support page before purchasing.

Match Windows support to your PC
Confirm that the adapter’s current manufacturer support page lists your Windows version. Do not rely solely on a product listing or the model name: manufacturers may publish different drivers and operating-system support for different hardware revisions or regional versions.
Windows support is only one part of compatibility. Microsoft’s Windows 11 Bluetooth documentation describes support for Bluetooth Core Specification 5.3 in Windows 11 version 22H2 and lists supported profiles and protocols. That documents Windows support; it does not guarantee that every adapter-and-accessory combination provides every feature.

Microsoft explains that Device Manager shows a radio’s LMP version, which maps to the highest Bluetooth Core Specification fully supported by the PC. An accessory with a higher specification may still work, but with reduced functionality. See Microsoft’s instructions for checking a Windows device’s Bluetooth version. A higher Bluetooth version label on an adapter is therefore not a promise that all of your accessory’s features will work.

Start with the device you want to connect and identify any specific Bluetooth profile or feature it requires. Consider whether you need basic input-device connections, audio, or another function, then check that the adapter, Windows version, and accessory support it together. A generic “Bluetooth compatible” label does not establish support for every profile or feature.

- What Can I do if the Bluetooth adapter can not work?: Ensure there are no other Bluetooth devices installed on the computer. If there are, disable all existing Bluetooth devices in "Device Manager", then insert the adapter and try again. (For detailed information please read the user manual)
For example, buying an adapter for a headset is not just a question of whether Windows can pair it: the Windows Bluetooth stack and radio must support the features the headset uses. The same principle applies to controllers and other peripherals. If the manufacturer does not clearly document the required feature for the exact adapter revision, treat compatibility as unconfirmed rather than inferring it from the version number.
Verify the exact hardware revision and driver
Find the hardware revision printed on the adapter or its packaging, then open the manufacturer’s support page for that revision and region. Verify the operating-system listing and available driver before buying. Products sold under one model name can change specifications or driver support between revisions.

The TP-Link UB500 illustrates why this matters; it is an example of the category, not a universal recommendation. TP-Link’s UB500 V3 datasheet describes a Bluetooth 5.4 USB-A adapter and lists Windows 11, 10, 8.1, and 7, while noting that a driver update may be needed after an operating-system update. The UB500 V3.60 US support page lists a Windows 10/11 driver and Bluetooth 5.4 support. These are revision- and region-specific listings; check the documentation for the exact unit offered rather than assuming every UB500 has the same support.
Check the connector and where you can place it
Confirm that the adapter’s connector matches a free port on your PC. For example, the cited UB500 V3 datasheet specifies USB-A. If your PC has no available matching port, the adapter may not be usable without another way to provide one.

Port placement can matter when connections are unreliable. Microsoft notes that unshielded USB devices can sometimes interfere with Bluetooth connections. If you encounter problems, try another USB port or move a nearby USB device. This is a practical troubleshooting step, not evidence that one adapter has better range or stability than another.
Compare adapters on the points that affect your setup
When choosing between candidates, compare the documented details for the exact hardware revision—not just the product name or headline Bluetooth version.

There is no universal range ranking or performance result established here, so do not assume that a higher version number or a particular physical size proves better range or reliability.

Outdated or incompatible drivers are a common cause of Bluetooth problems, according to Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance. If Windows does not find a newer driver, Microsoft advises checking the PC manufacturer’s support site. For a USB adapter, also check the adapter maker’s page for the exact revision.
