A traditional 60-watt incandescent bulb produces about 800 lumens. To replace it with an LED, look for roughly 800 lumens—not an LED that uses 60 watts. Lumens measure light output; watts measure electricity use.
What does “60-watt equivalent” mean?
It refers to the familiar brightness of a 60-watt incandescent, not the power an LED replacement must consume. The Federal Trade Commission uses about 800 lumens as the incandescent benchmark, and ENERGY STAR sets 800 lumens as the minimum brightness for a 60-watt incandescent replacement. FTC bulb-shopping guidance and ENERGY STAR brightness guidance explain the comparison.
Lumens describe how much visible light a bulb produces: more lumens means brighter light. Watts describe electrical power use. Because different bulb technologies can produce the same light output with different amounts of power, wattage alone is not a reliable way to compare brightness.

There is no single wattage for every LED that produces about 800 lumens. The FTC gives about 9 watts as an example. The U.S. Department of Energy’s purchasing table lists a range of 5.9 to 10.5 watts for general-purpose, A-type LED replacements with E26 medium bases at the 800-lumen benchmark. That range applies to the product category in the DOE table, not every LED bulb. Check the specific bulb’s label for its actual wattage. DOE purchasing guidance provides the category and range.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What to check when choosing a replacement
- Brightness: Choose about 800 lumens if you want output similar to a typical 60-watt incandescent. ENERGY STAR recommends selecting the lumens you need first, then choosing the lowest-wattage option that provides them.
- Light appearance: Check whether the bulb is warm or cool in appearance; packaging may describe this using color temperature. The FTC says covered bulbs’ Lighting Facts information includes light appearance.
- Fit and intended use: Confirm the base and bulb shape match the fixture. LEDs can be larger near the base than the bulbs they replace. For a dimmer or an enclosed fixture, check the bulb’s stated compatibility and suitability.
- Light distribution: Similar total lumens do not guarantee that two bulbs send light in the same directions. For directional bulbs or fixtures, consider distribution and beam angle as well as total lumens. For directional PAR lamps, the DOE fact sheet also identifies center-beam candlepower as relevant. DOE’s LED equivalency fact sheet discusses this distinction.
How to compare bulb labels
For most general-service lamps with medium screw bases, the FTC requires a Lighting Facts label. It gives shoppers information such as brightness in lumens, estimated yearly energy cost, expected life, light appearance and wattage. The rule has exceptions, so do not assume every bulb type carries the same required label. The FTC’s Lighting Facts label guidance explains the label’s scope.
Compare the lumen rating first, then consider actual wattage and the fit, appearance and compatibility details that matter for your fixture. A package calling a bulb “60-watt equivalent” is useful shorthand, but the lumen rating is the direct measure of its light output.
