Advanced movement is not a universal button sequence. It is a game-specific control system: learn what preserves or builds momentum, make each action repeatable, then connect those actions to a route, escape, or combat decision. The same wall-run, slide, dash, or vault can behave differently by game, character, platform, unlock state, and patch.

This guide gives you a reliable method for learning movement in any action game, then applies it to documented examples from Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, Red Eclipse, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Use the examples to understand principles, not to assume that another title uses the same inputs or physics.

What advanced movement actually means

Basic movement gets your character from one position to another. Advanced movement uses the game’s movement rules deliberately to change speed, direction, height, exposure, or route choice. A technique is valuable when it solves a problem: clearing a gap without losing speed, reaching a ledge, breaking line of sight, taking a safer angle, or escaping before an opponent can react.

Most advanced systems can be understood through five questions:

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Momentum: Does speed carry through a slide, jump, landing, vault, or wall-run? Can an action build speed?
  • Timing and control: Does success depend on approach angle, contact timing, jump timing, air steering, or a resource?
  • Traversal freedom: Which walls, ledges, ziplines, grapple points, or vertical surfaces are usable?
  • Constraints: Is the move restricted by character, upgrade, stamina, move count, cooldown, or progression?
  • Purpose and risk: Is the technique for traversal, evasion, combat positioning, or a speedrun route, and what happens if it fails?

Write down those answers for your game before memorizing a combo. A move that looks spectacular in a clip may be slower than a simple route, require a resource you cannot spare, or work only with a particular character.

Start with the correct control context

Before practicing any input, identify the exact conditions under which the mechanic exists.

  1. Name the game and version. Patches can change timing, collision, stamina, or route availability.
  2. Choose the character. Abilities may differ within the same game. Assassin’s Creed Shadows, for example, gives Naoe and Yasuke different traversal and evasive capabilities.
  3. Identify the platform and edition. Button labels can change between Xbox and PlayStation layouts, while keyboard controls may be remapped.
  4. Check progression. Some named moves are unavailable until an upgrade or ability is unlocked.
  5. Confirm the surface and situation. A wall-run may require a particular wall, approach angle, speed, or contact state; a dash may need a charge or a remaining move count.

Use the game’s current manual, tutorial, or official ability description as the authority for inputs. Treat a community clip as an illustration until you have confirmed that it matches your version.

Build a movement vocabulary

Advanced practice becomes much easier when every action has a precise name and a known start and end state. Make a short list using the title’s own terminology:

  • Ground actions: sprint, slide, crouch, dash, brake, or turn.
  • Obstacle actions: vault, climb, springboard, coil, mantle, or wallclimb.
  • Wall actions: wall-run, wall-jump, wall-kick, wall-eject, or rebound.
  • Vertical and line actions: grapple, zipline, ledge swing, or launch.
  • Air actions: jump, double jump, air dash, directional drift, or dive.

For each action, note four states: the required setup, the activation input, the control available during the action, and the recovery state. “Wall-run” is not one universal mechanic; one game may let you steer and jump out, another may lock your direction, and a third may consume a limited resource.

Momentum: the mechanic behind many advanced routes

Momentum is speed and direction carried from one action into the next. It can determine whether a slide reaches cover, whether a wall-run clears a gap, or whether a landing leaves you ready to sprint. Momentum is not identical across games: some preserve horizontal velocity, some damp it on landing, and some convert it into a launch or turn.

Read your game’s momentum rules

Test one transition at a time in a safe area. Sprint into a slide, jump from a slide, land and continue running, and approach a wall from several angles. Observe whether the next action starts faster, slower, or at the same speed. Record whether turning costs speed and whether stopping completely resets the movement state.

The official Mirror’s Edge Catalyst manual makes the relationship explicit: “Momentum and direction determines the distance of the run.” In its advanced-moves section, wall-run distance depends on both your incoming momentum and your direction. The manual also explains that jumping out can extend the run and that a slide carries farther when you enter it with high momentum.

Use momentum as a route resource

Do not treat speed as an automatic good. A fast approach may improve a wall-run but make a sharp turn or precise landing harder. Plan where you need speed and where you need control:

  • Build speed before a long gap, wall-run, or slide.
  • Bleed speed before a tight corner or small landing.
  • Preserve direction when the next surface is offset from your current line.
  • Accept a slower action when it produces a safer exit or better combat position.

Learn one mechanic before combining it

Practice each action until you can perform it without guessing. This is a practical teaching sequence rather than a measured learning law, but it prevents a common failure: changing several variables at once and not knowing which one caused the miss.

  1. Choose a repeatable test. For a wall-run, use the same wall and start marker. For a slide, use the same sprint distance and landing point.
  2. Find the activation window. Try the input early, on contact, and late. Identify the visual or audio cue that confirms the move has started.
  3. Test the end state. Note whether you can jump, steer, attack, or chain another action before the move ends.
  4. Change one variable. Alter approach angle, speed, jump timing, or direction while keeping the rest constant.
  5. Repeat until the result is predictable. Predictability matters more than a single stylish success.

Use a low-pressure area, training mode, replay, or an empty section of a level when available. If the game offers no practice space, repeat a short route rather than attempting the technique for the first time during a difficult encounter.

Transitions: turn isolated actions into useful combinations

A combination is useful when each transition has a reason. Instead of memorizing “sprint, slide, jump, dash” as a magic string, describe the job of each step:

  1. Approach: build the speed or angle required by the first surface.
  2. Entry: activate the move at its reliable cue.
  3. Conversion: use the move’s exit—jump, turn, dash, or rebound—to reach the next state.
  4. Exit: land in a controllable state with a clear next decision.

Practice two-action links first. Add a third action only after the first transition is stable. Then test the sequence from both sides of a route and at different starting speeds. A combination that works only from one exact setup is a route-specific trick, not a general movement skill.

Example: a wall-run transition

In Mirror’s Edge Catalyst, approach the wall at an angle, press the wall-run input shortly before contact, and maintain the line that gives the run enough distance. If the destination is beyond the run’s natural reach, jump out rather than waiting for the run to end. The manual lists wall-runs alongside vaults, springboards, coils, wallclimbs, and slides; which action follows depends on the level geometry.

Do not copy console buttons between systems. The official Xbox One and PlayStation 4 manuals use different labels for some actions. Verify the edition you play before turning this example into a drill.

Example: movement with a limited resource

Red Eclipse describes hops, slides, vaults, wall-running, and dashing as ways to move around a map and gain momentum. Its parkour documentation also warns that exhausting the available move count stops wall-running. The lesson is broader than that title: a movement action can have an economy. Count charges, stamina, or move opportunities before committing to a route, and leave enough resource for the exit rather than spending everything on the entry.

Character-specific movement changes the answer

In a character-switching game, “the best movement combo” may not exist. Assassin’s Creed Shadows presents a clear contrast between Naoe and Yasuke: their traversal and evasive capabilities are not identical, and Naoe has a wall eject at the apex of a wall-run.

When learning a character, make a separate capability sheet:

  • Which surfaces can be reached or crossed?
  • Which actions preserve speed, and which reset it?
  • Can the character steer, jump, or attack during the move?
  • What escape or recovery action follows a failed entry?
  • Does the ability require a progression unlock or resource?

Then build routes around that character’s strengths. A wall-run that is a setup for Naoe’s wall eject may be only a traversal action for another character. Do not evaluate a move outside the character and route for which it was designed.

Use movement for combat decisions, not only speed

Fast traversal and effective combat movement overlap, but they are not interchangeable. In a fight, the best action may be the one that changes your exposure or creates a safe angle rather than the one with the highest speed.

Approach

Use a slide, vault, dash, or wall route to arrive from an unexpected direction. Preserve enough control to stop behind cover or outside an attack’s range.

Evasion

Identify the action that changes your position relative to the threat. A vertical move may break a horizontal attack, while a lateral dash may be better against a tracking attack. The correct choice depends on the game’s hitboxes and timing.

Repositioning

Use movement to reach a stronger angle, reload location, objective, or teammate. A route that is slower but leaves you ready to act can outperform a faster route that ends in a vulnerable animation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Exit planning

Before entering a movement chain, identify where it ends and what you can do immediately afterward. If the final landing leaves you unable to steer or defend, the combo may be unsuitable in a live fight even if it is fast in an empty room.

Diagnose failures by cause

When a technique fails, classify the failure before changing your whole sequence.

Symptom Likely cause Adjustment
The move never starts Wrong input, unavailable unlock, wrong surface, or missed activation window Check the current control page and progression state; repeat the input at early, contact, and late timings.
The move starts but falls short Insufficient momentum, poor approach angle, or an early exit Increase the setup speed, change the entry line, or use the documented extension action.
You reach the destination but lose control Too much speed, a late turn, or an uncontrolled landing state Bleed speed before the turn and practice the landing separately.
The first link works, the second does not The exit state differs from what you expected Observe the exact frame or cue at which steering, jumping, or dashing becomes available.
The route works once and fails elsewhere Patch, surface, character, or starting-state dependence Retest on the current version and document the route’s required conditions.
Wall-running suddenly stops A movement count, stamina pool, or other resource has been exhausted Track the resource and reserve one use for the exit.

Separate execution errors from system limits. Mistiming is fixed with a cue and repetition; a locked ability is fixed through progression; an invalid surface cannot be solved by pressing the button harder.

Patch-sensitive techniques and community guides

Community movement guides can reveal techniques that official tutorials omit, including slide bunnyhops, dash slides, fast climbs, corner boosts, and zipline techniques in Deadlock. They are also the least reliable place to assume that a number is permanent. The cited Deadlock Handbook guide was updated October 8, 2026, and labels its timings, speeds, and stamina costs as checked against a community wiki for a named patch. Those values should be rechecked against the version you play before you practice them or publish them as fixed facts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a community guide for terminology and route ideas, then verify three things in your own client:

  • The patch number and platform match.
  • The move still exists and has the same resource cost.
  • The guide’s starting position and input method match your control scheme.

Do not generalize a game-specific speed or timing into a claim about movement games as a whole. No reliable statistic establishes how quickly players learn advanced movement or how common any one technique is.

When engine documentation helps—and when it does not

Technical documentation can explain an implementation pattern without describing a commercial game’s exact behavior. Epic’s Unreal Engine documentation for the “Mover 04 Wall Running Movement Mode” shows a wall-running mode in which the player retains some control and can jump. That is useful for understanding possible design choices, but it does not prove that a particular game uses the same acceleration, camera behavior, input window, or collision rules.

For players, the practical rule is simple: use engine documentation to understand vocabulary and possibilities; use the game’s own manual, patch notes, and in-game testing to determine what actually works.

Session 1: map the system

  • List every movement action available to your character.
  • Mark locked, resource-limited, and character-specific actions.
  • Record the platform controls and the surfaces each move accepts.

Session 2: isolate mechanics

  • Choose one ground action, one obstacle action, and one vertical or wall action.
  • Find each activation cue and repeat the action from the same start point.
  • Test how speed, direction, and turning affect the result.

Session 3: practice two-action transitions

  • Connect a setup to an entry, such as sprint-to-slide or approach-to-wall-run.
  • Connect an exit to a controllable landing or combat-ready state.
  • Remove any link that succeeds only by luck and simplify the route.

Session 4: apply a route or fight

  • Choose one real obstacle, escape path, or combat approach.
  • Run it at normal speed, then under pressure or with an opponent present.
  • Review each miss using the failure table rather than adding random inputs.

Keep a short log with the route, character, version, starting condition, successful input cue, and failure cause. This turns a highlight-reel trick into a reproducible skill.

Accessibility and control adjustments

Exact accessibility options vary by game, so inspect the current settings rather than assuming a feature exists. Look for remapping, toggle-versus-hold choices, sensitivity, camera controls, vibration, and timing assistance. A remap that places jump, dash, or slide within the same hand can make a transition easier to repeat, but it may also create conflicts with another action.

Test one setting change at a time. Confirm that the game still recognizes the intended order of inputs, especially when a move depends on pressing shortly before contact or holding a direction during a wall-run. If a technique remains physically uncomfortable, choose a route that uses fewer rapid transitions; reliable positioning is more valuable than reproducing a particular clip.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to compare movement systems fairly

Do not rank games by a single flashy mechanic. Compare them on the same axes and state the conditions:

Axis Questions to ask
Momentum behavior Does speed carry through slides, jumps, wall-runs, vaults, and landings?
Control and timing Does success depend on angle, contact timing, jump timing, air steering, or a resource?
Traversal freedom How many surfaces, ledges, ziplines, grapples, and vertical routes are usable?
Character and unlock constraints Are moves restricted by character, upgrade, progression, stamina, or move count?
Purpose and risk Does the system favor traversal, evasion, combat positioning, or speedrunning, and what is the cost of failure?

A comparison is meaningful only when the games are described on their own terms. A resource-limited wall-run and an unlimited wall-run are not directly equivalent, even if both are called wall-running.

Common mistakes that slow improvement

  • Copying an input string without its setup: The same buttons fail when speed, angle, surface, or character differs.
  • Practicing a locked move: Confirm the upgrade or ability requirement first.
  • Changing several variables at once: Keep the start point and one condition constant while diagnosing.
  • Optimizing speed before control: A slower route that is repeatable is the foundation for a faster route.
  • Ignoring resources: A combo that spends every dash, stamina point, or move count may have no escape.
  • Using outdated timings: Verify patch-sensitive values in the current client.
  • Confusing a showcase with a route: A clip can demonstrate possibility without being the safest or fastest option in a real level.

What mastery looks like

You have mastered an advanced movement mechanic when you can explain its conditions, perform it repeatedly, adapt it to a changed angle or starting speed, and choose not to use it when another action is safer. The final test is not a perfect practice-room sequence. It is making a deliberate movement decision while preserving a useful exit.

Start with the title, character, platform, version, and unlock state. Learn the game’s vocabulary, isolate each action, measure what happens to momentum, and add transitions only when their purpose is clear. Then validate the route under the pressure in which you intend to use it. That process transfers across games even though the buttons and physics do not.
