To mass transfer Pokémon in Pokémon GO, open Main Menu → Pokémon, press and hold one Pokémon, tap the other Pokémon you want to include, review the entire selection, and tap Transfer. The action is permanent: the Pokémon GO Help Center warns that “you can’t get Pokémon back after you’ve transferred them.” Use searches, tags, favorites, and a deliberate final review to reduce the chance of selecting something valuable by mistake.
What mass transfer does
Mass transfer is Pokémon GO’s batch-selection process for sending several Pokémon to Professor Willow in one operation. It is useful when your Pokémon storage is crowded, but it is not an archive function: transferred Pokémon leave your collection and cannot be recovered. You receive Candy for transferred Pokémon, but Candy does not make the original Pokémon retrievable.
The safest approach is a two-stage process. First, narrow the inventory so the list contains only candidates you are willing to consider. Second, manually inspect the batch immediately before committing. Search results are review aids, not a guarantee that every Pokémon you want to protect has been excluded.

The game does not provide a documented undo command. If you transfer the wrong Pokémon, changing a search, reopening the list, or contacting the game later does not restore that individual Pokémon. Your goal is therefore not simply to select a large number quickly; it is to create a batch whose contents you can explain one by one.

Prepare your inventory before selecting anything
Decide what “safe to transfer” means for this batch
Do not begin by tapping the first group of duplicates you see. Decide the rule for the batch first: for example, only Pokémon without a favorite marker, only Pokémon carrying a particular tag, or only a specific category you have already reviewed. A clear rule makes the final inspection faster and helps prevent an accidental tap on a keeper.
Keep the rule narrow enough to verify. “Everything I do not need” is difficult to check, while “the untagged members of this already-reviewed group” gives you a concrete standard. If your rule depends on information that is not represented by a search category, such as a personal reason for keeping one individual, plan to inspect those Pokémon manually.
Open the Pokémon list
- Start from the Map View.
- Tap Main Menu.
- Tap Pokémon to open your inventory.
From the Pokémon list, tap the magnifying-glass icon to open the search field. The official inventory guide documents combining search terms, so you can narrow a large collection before starting multi-select.

Useful documented searches include favorite, shiny, lucky, legendary, mythical, and Buddy-level searches from buddy0 through buddy5. Tags can be searched by entering # followed by the tag name. To exclude a matching category, the guide documents the exclamation mark operator; for example, !defender finds Pokémon that are not defending a Gym.
Combine terms when you need a narrower candidate list, then scan the results rather than assuming the expression captures your personal definition of a keeper. A search can organize the inventory, but it cannot know which individual Pokémon you value for reasons that are not represented by a documented category or tag.
Use a positive search and an exclusion search as two separate checks when practical. For example, review the results for favorite before working from a list that excludes favorites. This makes it less likely that you overlook a favorite because you assumed the filter behaved as intended. Tags can serve the same purpose: mark Pokémon you have decided to keep, then search that tag before creating a transfer batch.
Step-by-step: mass transfer a reviewed group
1. Filter the list
Use the magnifying glass and your chosen search terms to reduce the inventory to plausible transfer candidates. If the batch involves a sensitive category such as Legendary, Mythical, Shiny, or Lucky Pokémon, run a separate search for that category before making any selection so you can account for the special rules described below.

Filtering is only the first pass. The result may include a Pokémon that meets the search condition but is still important to you, and the game’s eligibility rules may prevent some results from being selected. Leave enough time to compare the filtered list with your own keep rules.
2. Start multi-select
Press and hold the first Pokémon until the selection mode begins. A normal tap opens an individual Pokémon, while pressing and holding starts the batch-selection workflow. If the first press opens the Pokémon’s detail view, return to the list and press and hold rather than treating the opening tap as a selection.

3. Add the remaining Pokémon
Tap each additional Pokémon you want to include. Continue through the filtered results, checking the individual sprites and names as you go. Selection is cumulative, so every tap changes the group that will be transferred.
Work in a predictable direction through the list instead of tapping randomly. After adding a group, pause and look for a selected indicator on each intended candidate. This does not change the game’s rules, but it gives you a repeatable way to notice a missed tap or an accidental inclusion while the batch is still editable.
4. Inspect the complete selection
Pause before using the Transfer command. Look through the selected group from beginning to end and verify that it follows the rule you set before starting. Check names, forms, tags, favorite status, Shiny or Lucky appearance, Legendary or Mythical status, Buddy status, and any Pokémon you intended to keep for another purpose.
If one Pokémon is questionable, remove it from the selection rather than relying on memory. A smaller batch is safer than trying to correct a mistaken transfer later. If several entries are uncertain, cancel the selection and create a review tag or separate list before trying again.
5. Commit the batch
When every selected Pokémon has passed your review, tap Transfer. The selected Pokémon are sent to Professor Willow and leave your inventory. There is no documented undo command, so treat this tap as the final commitment.
After the transfer, check that the storage space you expected to free is available and that the remaining collection still contains your keepers. This is a confirmation step, not a recovery method: once the transfer is complete, the transferred Pokémon cannot be returned.

The documented operators can be combined, but no single expression replaces inspection of the final selected group. If you have several personal keep rules, run separate searches for each rule and compare the results before selecting.
Searches are best used as a checklist rather than as an automatic deletion command. A query can tell you which Pokémon match a documented status; it cannot determine whether a particular individual has sentimental value or is the one you planned to power up. Search the keep categories first, then return to your candidate query and build the batch only after those checks are complete.
Transfer restrictions you must account for
Some Pokémon cannot be included in an ordinary batch, while others require a setting or are blocked from multi-select. These are eligibility rules, not a substitute for your own review.

A blocked selection is not evidence that the whole inventory search is wrong. It may simply mean that one entry has a protected status or that the category has a batch restriction. Identify the status, remove the restricted entry if necessary, and rebuild the group rather than repeatedly tapping the same Pokémon.
How to handle Legendary and Mythical transfers
Enable the required setting before selection
The Help Center states that transferring multiple Legendary or Mythical Pokémon requires an option in the app settings. Because the exact interface can change, open the current settings screen and look for the transfer permission covering multiple Legendary and Mythical Pokémon. Enable it before creating the batch, then return to the inventory and repeat your search and review.
Turning on the option does not make every special Pokémon transferable. Mew and Celebi are named examples of Pokémon that cannot be selected for transfer, and other category restrictions still apply.
Do not enable the option and then assume an earlier selection is safe. A setting change can alter which entries are eligible, so the cautious workflow is to exit the selection, confirm the setting, rerun the search, and create a fresh batch. That gives you a clear eligibility state at the moment of review.
Separate categories that cannot be batched
Do not put multiple Shiny, Lucky, or Good Buddy-or-higher Pokémon into the same transfer selection. The game blocks those multi-transfer cases. Treat each category as a separate review path instead of trying to work around the restriction with a broader search.

Special-category restrictions are easy to confuse because they do not all behave alike. Legendary and Mythical batches may require the setting; multiple Shiny, Lucky, and qualifying Buddy Pokémon are blocked as groups; and some Legendary or Mythical Pokémon cannot be selected at all. When a batch fails, identify which rule applies before changing anything else.
A practical review method for avoiding mistakes
Use a “candidate, then keeper” pass
First identify candidates with searches and tags. Then switch your attention from what can leave to what must stay. Search for favorites, Shinies, Luckies, Legendaries, Mythicals, Buddy levels, and your own tags. This second pass catches a valuable Pokémon that happened to appear in the candidate results.
Keep the two passes conceptually separate. The candidate pass answers “which entries might I transfer?” The keeper pass answers “which entries must not leave?” Mixing those questions encourages assumptions, especially when a Pokémon has more than one status.
Check the selection, not just the search results
The final batch is the only group that will be transferred. A filtered list may still contain a Pokémon you want to keep, and a protected Pokémon may be excluded by the game rather than by your search. Before tapping Transfer, inspect the selected indicators on every intended candidate and remove anything uncertain.

Review the whole group even if the first few entries look correct. An accidental tap near the end of the list is just as permanent as one at the beginning. If you lose track of what you selected, clear the selection and start again instead of trying to reconstruct it from memory.
Use smaller batches when the stakes are high
There is no requirement to empty the entire filtered list at once. If a category contains valuable or unusual Pokémon, select a small, easily verified group. The time spent on an extra review is preferable to losing a Pokémon that cannot be recovered.
Smaller batches also make restricted categories easier to diagnose. If the game refuses a group, you can identify the relevant Pokémon and status without sorting through an unnecessarily large selection.

You want to clear ordinary duplicates
Search and inspect the ordinary candidates, start selection with a press-and-hold, add only the duplicates you have reviewed, and commit after checking the full group. Keep favorites and any tagged keepers outside the selection.

The app will not let you select a Pokémon
Check whether it is your active Buddy, favorited, defending a Gym, or one of the special Pokémon that cannot be selected. If it belongs to a restricted category, the inability to select it is an eligibility rule rather than a failed tap.
The game refuses a special-category batch
Identify the category first. Multiple Legendary or Mythical transfers need the appropriate setting enabled. Multiple Shiny, Lucky, or Good Buddy-or-higher transfers are not allowed in one batch, so remove those Pokémon and process only an eligible group.
You changed a setting after selecting
Do not assume the existing selection has updated safely. Exit the selection, confirm the setting, rerun the search, and build a fresh batch. A fresh selection makes the eligibility state clear during the final review.
You are unsure about one selected Pokémon
Remove it and stop the batch if necessary. The transfer command is not a place to test whether you will regret a choice; uncertain Pokémon belong in a separate review list or tag.

Recheck the exact search expression and inspect the Pokémon’s current status. The documented search operators narrow results, but they do not encode every personal keep rule. If the result remains ambiguous, do not select it; set it aside and continue only with entries you can verify.

You want to transfer several categories at once
Separate the categories before selecting. A broad list can mix ordinary Pokémon with Legendary, Mythical, Shiny, Lucky, or qualifying Buddy Pokémon, triggering restrictions or making the review harder. Process a clearly eligible group, then begin a new search and review for the next category.
Reusable safe-transfer checklist
- Open Main Menu → Pokémon from Map View.
- Use the magnifying glass and documented searches to narrow the inventory.
- Check favorites, tags, Shiny, Lucky, Legendary, Mythical, Buddy, and defender status.
- Confirm whether a Legendary or Mythical multi-transfer setting is required.
- Press and hold the first candidate to start selection.
- Tap additional Pokémon one at a time.
- Remove anything that does not clearly meet your transfer rule.
- Verify that no restricted special-category group is included.
- Review the complete selected group immediately before committing.
- Tap Transfer only after the review is complete.
If you cannot answer why each selected Pokémon is included, stop before the last step. A delayed transfer costs only a little time; an incorrect transfer cannot be reversed.
What to remember
Mass transfer is straightforward, but the safe version is deliberate: filter first, select with press-and-hold, inspect the exact batch, and commit only when every Pokémon is intentional. Favorites, active Buddies, and Gym defenders are protected; special categories have additional batch rules; and some Pokémon, including Mew and Celebi, cannot be selected at all. The Help Center’s warning is the key constraint: once transferred, a Pokémon cannot be returned.
