Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
To manually upload mods, run a Minecraft Java Edition server with a compatible loader such as Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge; stop the server; copy the correct server-compatible .jar files and their dependencies into the server’s mods folder (or a host panel’s /mods directory); then restart and check the console. Every mod must match the server’s Minecraft version and loader. A vanilla server cannot load mod JARs until a mod loader is installed.
What you need before uploading anything
Manual installation works when the server and every mod agree on three fundamentals: the Java Edition of Minecraft, the exact Minecraft release, and the mod loader. A Fabric mod is not automatically usable on Forge or NeoForge, and a file built for one Minecraft release may fail on another. Check the mod’s download information before transferring it.

- Java Edition server: Bedrock Edition uses a different server and add-on system.
- Installed loader: Fabric, Forge, or another loader supported by the mod. Uploading JARs to a vanilla server does not install a loader.
- Matching Minecraft version: Use the release named by the mod, not merely the newest release available.
- Server-compatible files: Some projects publish separate client-only and server-capable files.
- Required dependencies: A mod may require another library or API, such as Fabric API.
- A recoverable backup: Preserve the world, configuration, and current mod files before changing a working server.
Download only from a source you trust. Keep the original downloaded JARs unchanged so you can identify exactly what was installed and restore an earlier version if a later change causes a failure.
Install and verify the server loader
The loader is the program that reads mod JARs during startup. Install it before attempting to upload mods.

Prepare a Java server directory
- Create or choose one folder for the server JAR, loader files, world, configuration, logs, and mods. Keeping these files together makes backups and troubleshooting easier.
- Obtain the official vanilla server JAR for the Minecraft release you intend to run. Mojang’s server guidance identifies this file in the form
minecraft_server.1.XX.X.jar. - Open a command prompt or terminal in the server environment and run
java -version. Mojang’s help documentation specifically uses this command to verify the installed Java runtime. - Check that the Java runtime suits the Minecraft release and loader. Fabric’s installation guidance recommends Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17 through 1.20.4 and Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer.
| Minecraft release range | Fabric-recommended Java version | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1.17–1.20.4 | Java 17 | Recommendation in Fabric’s installation guidance |
| 1.20.5 and newer | Java 21 | Recommendation in Fabric’s installation guidance |
If java -version reports an older runtime, install the Java version required by your release and make sure the server startup script uses that installation. A loader error that appears before any mod is mentioned can be a Java-version problem rather than a bad mod.
Install Fabric
- Download the Fabric server launcher or installer for the Minecraft version you selected.
- Place the executable installer JAR in the server directory and run it according to Fabric’s server-installation instructions.
- The manual installation creates
fabric-server-launch.jarand expects the vanillaserver.jarin the same server setup. - Use the generated launcher or startup script for subsequent starts. Do not replace it with the vanilla server command, or the server will start without Fabric.
Fabric’s server guidance describes the destination plainly: “Now you can add mods to the c:mc-servermods folder.” The path is an example; your folder can be elsewhere, but it is the mods directory belonging to the Fabric server, not a client installation’s folder.

Forge and NeoForge use their own installers, files, and generated startup scripts. Run the installer for the exact Minecraft release, then start the server with the script or JAR it generates. Follow the loader’s installation layout rather than copying Fabric files into a Forge installation. Forge documentation also notes that some hosting providers install the loader through a control panel, while others require the administrator to upload the files and select the correct startup JAR.
Start once, accept required files, and stop cleanly
- Start the newly installed loader with its normal script or panel control.
- Allow the first launch to create the properties, world, configuration, and other runtime files required by that setup.
- Complete any first-run acceptance step requested by the server installation.
- Stop the server through its normal console or panel control. Do not copy or replace JARs while the process is still running.
Starting once before uploading mods confirms that the loader itself can launch. Stopping before file changes prevents the running process from reading half-written files or overwriting changes during shutdown.
Find the correct mods folder
On a self-hosted server
Open the same server directory that contains the loader’s launcher and the server world. The destination is the mods folder in that directory. A client-side .minecraftmods folder is not the server destination. If the expected folder is missing after a loader launch, verify that you started the loader rather than the vanilla JAR and check the loader’s installation instructions before moving files.

On a hosted control panel
First select a server type that supports the loader you need: Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge. In the panel’s file manager, open Files (the exact label varies), locate /mods, and upload the JAR there. Some panels expose SFTP instead of a browser uploader. The provider’s workflow determines how the loader is installed, which Java versions are available, and which startup JAR is selected.
A Paper server is a plugin server, not a Forge/Fabric mod server. Uploading Fabric or Forge mods to a Paper installation will not make those mods load; switch the server type to a compatible mod-loader installation first.
Choose the files that belong on the server
Check the version and loader for every JAR
Before copying a file, read its project page or download label and confirm all of the following:
- It is marked for Java Edition.
- Its Minecraft version exactly matches the server release.
- Its loader is the one installed on the server.
- It supports dedicated-server use, rather than only running in a client.
- Its required libraries and APIs are also available for that same version and loader.
Do not assume that a file labeled “latest” is suitable. A newer Minecraft release, a different loader build, or a client-only edition can all look similar in a download list while being incompatible with your server.
Add dependencies
Read each mod’s dependency list and upload every required library to the same mods directory. Fabric’s player documentation notes that most Fabric mods require Fabric API. Download the matching API release, not an arbitrary version, and treat it like any other compatibility-checked JAR. Some mod packs also require files in the server’s config folder; copy those only when the mod’s instructions specifically call for them.

Leave client-only mods out
Client-only files provide rendering, interface, or other functions that a dedicated server does not use. The Fabric Windows tutorial says these entries can be excluded and specifically warns against copying OptiFine or OptiFabric to the server. Installing client-only code on a dedicated server can cause a crash or make the loader refuse to continue.
Players may still need client-side mods to connect or see the intended features. A mod can therefore be server-only, client-only, or required on both sides. Use the mod’s stated side requirement instead of copying the entire contents of a player’s personal mods folder.
Upload mods to a self-hosted server
- Stop the server. Use the server console or its normal stop control and wait until the process has fully exited.
- Back up the world and settings. Save the world,
configdirectory, loader files, and currentmodsdirectory. A backup gives you a rollback point if a new mod changes world behavior or prevents startup. - Open the server directory. Use the folder containing the loader launcher and server files, not the game client’s installation directory.
- Open
mods. This is the destination used by the loader for server mod JARs. - Copy compatible JARs. Transfer each server-compatible mod file without extracting it. Keep the
.jarextension and avoid renaming files unless the mod documentation says a name is required. - Copy dependencies. Add required APIs and libraries, such as the matching Fabric API when a Fabric mod requires it.
- Apply documented configuration. If the mod supplies configuration files or requires a particular setting, place them in the stated location, commonly the server’s
configdirectory. Do not overwrite an existing configuration without retaining a backup. - Review the folder before starting. Remove client-only files, old versions you no longer intend to load, and duplicate copies of the same mod. Confirm that every remaining JAR targets the installed loader and Minecraft version.
- Start with the loader’s normal script. Use the Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge launcher created during installation, not the vanilla server JAR.
- Watch the console. Wait for the normal ready state and read any dependency, version, or side error before allowing players to connect.
Uploading a file does not activate it immediately. The loader reads the directory during startup, so every mod change requires a restart.
Upload mods through a hosting panel
Panel names differ, but the sequence is consistent:
- Stop the server using the panel’s stop control.
- Select the compatible server type—Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge—and verify the Minecraft version. If the panel installs the loader automatically, let that process finish before uploading files.
- Open the file manager and enter
/mods. If the provider uses SFTP, connect to the server’s assigned files and open the equivalent directory. - Upload the mod JARs and dependencies. Do not upload client-only files or a JAR built for another loader.
- Check the startup selection. Some providers require you to choose a generated Forge JAR or loader launch option; starting a vanilla JAR bypasses the mods.
- Restart the server. The Craftlands hosted workflow, for example, requires a restart after uploading files. Other panels use different labels but the same requirement applies.
- Read the live console. Confirm that the loader reaches its ready state and investigate any error before inviting players back.
Managed hosting can simplify installation, but the provider controls which Minecraft releases, Java runtimes, loaders, backups, and startup options are available. A panel that does not support your chosen loader or version cannot be made compatible merely by uploading a JAR.

Connect with a matching client
After the server reaches its ready state, connect from a client that uses the same Minecraft version and loader. Install any mods the mod author identifies as client-required, and keep client-only visual or interface mods on the client. If the client has a different loader, version, or required content, it may refuse the connection even though the server started successfully.
A successful login is not the only verification. Join the world, test the mod’s documented feature, and watch the server console while doing so. Some incompatibilities appear only when a block, item, command, or entity supplied by the mod is used.
Diagnose a failed startup or connection
The server starts normally but the mod does nothing
- Confirm that you started the loader launcher rather than the vanilla server JAR.
- Check that the JAR is in the server’s
modsdirectory, not only in a client folder. - Verify that the file targets the exact Minecraft version and loader.
- Restart after every file change; uploading alone does not load a mod.
The console reports a missing dependency
Read the named dependency in the log or crash report and install the matching release in mods. Fabric installations commonly need Fabric API. Restart after adding it. If the message names a different version, replace the dependency with the release required by the mod rather than keeping multiple incompatible versions.
The server crashes immediately after adding a JAR
- Stop the server and preserve the crash report and latest log.
- Note the first mod, dependency, version, or side-related error in the report. The final line is not always the underlying cause.
- Remove the most recently added JAR and restart to confirm whether the failure disappears.
- If several files were added together, restore the backup and add them in small groups or one at a time.
- Replace any file identified as the wrong Minecraft version, wrong loader, client-only, or missing a required dependency.
This isolation method is safer than deleting the entire mods directory because it preserves known-good files and identifies the incompatible change.
The server rejects a client during login
Compare the client’s Minecraft version and loader with the server’s. Then check whether the mod requires a matching client installation or a particular dependency on both sides. Remove client-only server files such as OptiFine or OptiFabric from the server and keep them on the client where appropriate.

Java errors appear before mod loading
Run java -version in the same environment used by the startup script or panel. A host may expose a Java selector separate from the version installed on your personal computer. Align the runtime with the Minecraft release: Fabric recommends Java 17 for 1.17–1.20.4 and Java 21 for 1.20.5 and newer.
The panel shows files but starts another server type
Uploading to /mods cannot convert a Paper or vanilla installation into a Fabric or Forge server. Select the appropriate loader in the panel, allow it to install or expose the correct startup files, and then upload the mods again. If the provider does not offer that loader or Minecraft version, choose a supported setup or self-host the required combination.
Self-hosting and managed panels: practical differences
The manual steps are similar, but responsibility changes depending on where the server runs.
| Decision area | Self-hosted server | Managed panel |
|---|---|---|
| Loader installation and updates | The administrator installs the loader and maintains its files and scripts. | The provider may install it through a selector, or may require administrator-uploaded files. |
| File access | Direct access to the server directory. | Panel file manager or SFTP, depending on the provider. |
| Startup JAR | The administrator controls the launcher or generated script. | The panel may require selecting the generated loader JAR or startup option. |
| Backups and rollback | The administrator must create and retain backups. | Available controls vary by provider; verify that world and configuration backups can be restored. |
| Java version | The administrator installs and selects the runtime. | The provider determines which Java versions can be selected. |
| Supported versions and loaders | Determined by the files and Java environment you can maintain. | Limited to the Minecraft releases and loaders the provider offers. |
Choose the arrangement that gives you access to the loader, Java version, file manager or SFTP, startup controls, and backup process your mod collection requires.
Safe update and rollback routine
Modded servers are easier to maintain when each change is reversible.

Quick Recap
Final upload checklist
- Java Edition is being used.
- The server has Fabric, Forge, or NeoForge installed and starts with that loader.
- The Java runtime matches the release; Fabric’s guidance is Java 17 for 1.17–1.20.4 and Java 21 for 1.20.5 and newer.
- The server is stopped and backed up before file changes.
- Each JAR matches the exact Minecraft version and loader.
- Required dependencies, including Fabric API where required, are present.
- Client-only files, including OptiFine and OptiFabric, are not in the dedicated server’s
modsfolder. - Files are in the server directory’s
modsfolder or the panel’s/modsdirectory. - The server restarts with its loader launcher, reaches a ready state, and shows no unresolved errors.
- Connecting clients use the matching version, loader, and client-required mods.
