Start by checking whether the problem is on one device or the whole network. Turn Wi-Fi on, switch Airplane Mode off, move closer to the router, and try another device on the same Wi-Fi. If only one device is affected, troubleshoot that device; if several are offline, investigate the router, modem, or internet provider. A device can be connected to Wi-Fi without having an internet connection.

Identify what is failing

“Wi-Fi is broken” can describe different symptoms, and the right fix depends on which one you have. Check whether the device cannot see the network, cannot join it, keeps disconnecting, has a weak or slow signal, or connects to Wi-Fi but cannot reach the internet. Note when the problem began—for example, after an update, waking from sleep, changing the router, or changing a VPN or security setting. On Windows, collecting this baseline before disruptive fixes can preserve useful diagnostic information; see Microsoft Learn’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance.

Run the quick checks first

  • Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled and Airplane Mode is off.
  • Move close to the router and try again. A missing or weak connection indicator may mean the device is out of range, according to Google’s Android connection guidance.
  • Toggle Wi-Fi off and back on, then reconnect to the network.
  • If you are using a VPN or recently changed a security setting, test without that change if you can do so safely.

On iPhone or iPad, Apple advises checking Wi-Fi and Airplane Mode; if the Wi-Fi setting is greyed out, restart the device. See Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps.

Determine whether the problem is one device or the network

Connect another phone or computer to the same Wi-Fi and test whether it can reach the internet. Also try the affected device on another Wi-Fi network, if one is available.

The affected device fails on different Wi-Fi networks, but other devices work The device’s operating system, wireless adapter, driver, or hardware.

Apple recommends testing other devices and contacting the ISP if none can get online; its guidance also suggests checking for an outage. See Apple’s troubleshooting page. This comparison helps avoid changing router settings to fix a fault isolated to one device.

Reconnect to Wi-Fi and power-cycle the router

Forget and rejoin the network

If the saved password or network profile may be stale, remove the saved network and join it again. Make sure you know the Wi-Fi password first. Menu labels vary across Android models; consult your device maker’s support if you need the precise path.

Restart the router—not reset it

Restarting means temporarily removing power; it is not the same as a factory reset. Google’s Android guidance says to unplug the router, wait 30 seconds, reconnect it, and allow time for its lights to return. Follow the router’s own instructions if they differ. A modem/router combination may have only one power connection. Expect other people using the network to lose connectivity briefly. See Google’s Android guidance.

Check signal, frequency band, and compatibility

Test near the router. If it offers separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks, try another band the device supports. A device may not support every band the router broadcasts, and signal quality depends on distance, obstacles, device capability, and local interference—not just the frequency. Microsoft documents band compatibility and changing the router’s wireless channel as possible checks for repeated drops, while Apple recommends trying another frequency when available. Router menus and options differ by model. See Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting page and Apple’s Wi-Fi guidance.

If Wi-Fi connects but there is no internet

Wi-Fi association is the local wireless link between your device and router; internet access also depends on the router receiving a working connection from the modem and ISP. Microsoft describes Windows’ limited-connectivity state as a PC connected to its local network but not the internet. Apple gives “No Internet Connection” as an example of a device message. A device can therefore show a Wi-Fi connection while websites and apps remain offline.

Check the device’s network details

On Windows, an address in the 169.254.x.x range can indicate the PC did not obtain an address from the router through DHCP. Microsoft also recommends renewing the IP configuration, checking the default gateway, flushing DNS, and checking proxy settings. If the router responds at its gateway address but internet access still fails, the problem may be with the modem or ISP. Follow Microsoft’s current steps at Fix Wi-Fi connection issues in Windows.

Test the modem and internet path

Check that the modem and router are powered and their cables are firmly connected, especially the connection between the modem and router. If you have an Ethernet cable and a compatible computer, connect the computer directly to the modem to test the internet connection without the Wi-Fi router. This is optional; borrow a cable if needed. If the direct connection also fails after restarting the modem, contact your ISP. TP-Link’s instructions describe this test for its equipment; other routers may use different menus or procedures. See TP-Link’s internet troubleshooting guidance.

Avoid changing settings such as MAC cloning, LAN IP addresses, or manually assigned DNS as an early fix. These are advanced, manufacturer-specific changes and can create new connectivity problems if applied incorrectly.

Use network resets only after simpler fixes

Windows network reset

Microsoft describes network reset as a last step: it removes and reinstalls network adapters and restores their settings to defaults. Record relevant settings and symptoms first, since a reset can change the state you are trying to diagnose. Use the instructions on Microsoft’s Windows support page.

Android network reset

Reset labels and paths vary by Android manufacturer and model. Check the device maker’s support instructions for the exact option and what it removes rather than relying on a universal menu path.

Know when to contact support

  • Contact your ISP if several devices are offline, you suspect an outage, or a direct modem test fails.
  • Contact the router maker if a router-specific setting, firmware issue, or suspected hardware fault remains.
  • If one device fails across unrelated Wi-Fi networks while other devices work, seek help for that device’s operating system, wireless adapter, driver, or hardware.

A factory reset is different from restarting: it can erase the router’s configuration and require setup again. Avoid repeated factory resets; use the router maker’s instructions if a reset is genuinely necessary. TP-Link’s guidance warns that configuration changes and recovery procedures depend on the equipment; see its troubleshooting page.
