You can review or remove YouTube searches and watched videos from Profile picture → Settings → Manage all history on a phone or tablet, or through Google My Activity → YouTube History on a computer. You can delete individual items, clear a period, pause future saving, set automatic deletion for search history, or tune recommendations with “Not interested” and “Don’t recommend channel.” Choose carefully: a bulk deletion for one history type also removes the other type for the same period, and turning off watch history can remove Home recommendations when little prior watch history remains.
What YouTube history controls actually do
YouTube has separate controls for searches and watched videos, but many of the controls appear in the same history manager. The action you choose determines whether old activity is removed, future activity is stopped, or recommendations are adjusted without changing your records.

Decide what to change before deleting anything
Remove individual entries when you want precision
Use the close or remove control beside a single search or video when you want to correct one mistake, hide a sensitive item, or remove one irrelevant signal while preserving the rest of your history. This is the safest option if you want to keep the other history type intact.

Bulk deletion affects both history types
YouTube’s help instructions warn that deleting search history for a selected time frame also deletes watch history for that frame. The reverse is also true: deleting watch history for a selected period removes search history for that period. If preserving one type matters, do not use a time-range delete merely because the control is labelled for the other type. Remove entries individually instead.

Pausing affects new activity, not old activity
Turning off a history control stops new activity of that type from being saved. It does not erase entries already in the account. Search history paused means new searches are not added; watch history paused means newly watched videos are not added. You can still delete older entries separately.
Clearing and turning off watch history can remove Home suggestions
YouTube describes watch history as a primary basis for Home recommendations. If watch history is off and the account has no significant prior watch history, YouTube says Home recommendations are removed. The Home page still retains the search bar and the left-side menu. YouTube Help states: “If you don’t want video recommendations on Home, you can delete and turn off your watch history.” This is useful for a recommendation-free Home page, but it is not the right choice if you want better-personalized suggestions.
Manage YouTube history on a computer
Open the history manager
- Go to Google My Activity and sign in to the Google Account used for YouTube.
- Open YouTube History. The history manager displays watched videos and provides controls for searches and watch activity.
- Use the search field or calendar controls to locate a particular item or date range before changing anything.
Delete one watched video or search
- In YouTube History, locate the entry you want to remove.
- Select the entry’s remove or close control.
- Confirm if YouTube asks. Only that entry is removed, so this method avoids the cross-deletion effect of a bulk operation.
Delete activity for a larger period
- In the history manager, choose DELETE.
- Select the available period, such as a recent period or a custom range.
- Read the confirmation carefully. The selected range can remove both search and watch history, even if you started from one history view.
- Confirm only after checking that the period is correct.
Use the calendar and search controls first when you need a narrow cleanup. A broad deletion is difficult to undo and can change recommendation signals immediately.
Pause saving searches
- In My Activity, open the YouTube history controls.
- Find Saving your search history.
- Unselect Include your searches on YouTube.
- Confirm the pause if prompted.
Searches made while search history is paused are not saved. Searches made in YouTube Incognito mode are also not saved in search history.
Pause saving watched videos
- Open the YouTube History controls in My Activity.
- Find the watch-history setting.
- Unselect Include the YouTube videos you watch.
- Confirm the setting.
Pausing does not remove past watched videos. Delete the old entries separately if you also want to remove their influence on future recommendations.

Set automatic deletion for search history
Computer search-history settings list automatic deletion choices of 3, 18, or 36 months. Select the interval in the search-history control and confirm. The reviewed watch-history instructions confirm that an automatic-deletion control exists, but do not establish that the same three intervals are available for watch history. Check the label shown in your account rather than assuming the search options apply to both.
Manage history on Android, iPhone, or iPad
Open Manage all history
- Open the YouTube app and sign in.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Manage all history.
The history interface includes search and calendar controls, so you can find activity without scrolling through the entire account.

- Find the search or watched-video entry.
- Tap its close or remove control.
- Confirm if requested.
Removing an individual entry limits the change to that item. It is preferable to a time-range deletion when you need to preserve other activity.
Delete a time range
- In Manage all history, use DELETE.
- Choose the period you want to clear, using the date controls if available.
- Review the warning before confirming.
The same cross-deletion rule applies on mobile: deleting either search or watch history for a selected period removes both types for that period.
Pause search history
- In Manage all history, open the Controls tab.
- Unselect Include your searches on YouTube.
- Confirm the change.
New searches made while this option is off are not saved. Incognito searches are not saved in search history either.

Pause watch history
- Open the Controls tab in Manage all history.
- Unselect Include the YouTube videos you watch.
- Confirm the pause.
Existing watch history remains until you delete it. If you later turn saving back on, newly watched videos can be recorded again.
Change history settings on a TV or game console
On TV and console versions of YouTube, open Settings from the left-side menu. YouTube’s watch-history instructions describe pause and clear options there. Menu wording and placement can vary by television, streaming device, console generation, or app version, so follow the labels on screen rather than expecting the phone layout.
For a recommendation you do not want, highlight the item and use the remote’s select button to open its options. Choose Not interested when that control is available. This sends recommendation feedback without requiring you to erase all history.
Tune recommendations without deleting your history
Use Not interested for an unwanted video
- Find the recommended video on Home or another recommendation surface.
- Open the video’s More menu.
- Choose Not interested.
- If YouTube offers a reason, select the one that fits, such as I’ve already watched the video or I don’t like the video.
YouTube says this feedback helps tune recommendations. It changes the recommendation system’s signals; it does not function as a history-delete command.
Use Don’t recommend channel for a recurring source
When the option is available, open the More menu beside a recommendation and choose Don’t recommend channel. This is more targeted than clearing all watch history when the problem is repeated suggestions from one channel.

Clear submitted recommendation feedback
If you change your mind, review Google My Activity and open Other Google activity. The YouTube feedback controls there can show submitted Not interested and Don’t recommend channel feedback and let you clear it. Clearing feedback does not restore deleted history entries.
How YouTube recommendations and search results are personalized
History is important, but it is not the only signal
YouTube describes watch history as a primary basis for Home recommendations, while also listing search history, subscriptions, likes, dislikes, recommendation feedback, and satisfaction surveys among its signals. Different surfaces use different signals. YouTube says the video currently being watched is the main signal for Up Next, so changing Home history may not produce the same change in the next-video queue.
Google Account activity can influence more than YouTube Home
YouTube says Google Account activity may influence recommendations, search results, in-app notifications, and suggested videos elsewhere. If suggestions remain surprising after you clean YouTube history, review activity controls in My Activity and the Google Account activity settings. This broader review is separate from deleting one YouTube search or video.
Deleting old entries removes their recommendation influence
YouTube says deleting old entries removes those entries’ influence on future recommendations. That does not guarantee an immediate or total reset: subscriptions, likes, dislikes, feedback, current viewing context, and other account activity can continue to shape what appears.
Choose the right workflow for your goal
You want to remove one embarrassing or irrelevant item
- Remove that individual search or watched video.
- Leave both history controls enabled if you still want personalized suggestions.
- Use Not interested as well if the item has already influenced recommendations.
You want a clean reset for a defined period
- Use the calendar or time-range delete in YouTube History.
- Expect both search and watch history to be removed for the selected period.
- Afterward, use recommendation feedback to correct remaining unwanted suggestions.
You do not want future activity saved
- Pause search history, watch history, or both in the Controls tab.
- Use Incognito for searches you do not want added to search history.
- Remember that pausing does not erase earlier entries.
You want recommendations, but from different subjects
- Keep watch history enabled so YouTube can continue learning from viewing activity.
- Remove old entries that no longer represent your interests.
- Use Not interested and Don’t recommend channel on unwanted suggestions.
- Check subscriptions, likes, and dislikes because they are also recommendation signals.
You want no Home recommendations
- Delete watch history and turn off watch history.
- Understand that YouTube may remove Home recommendations when there is no significant prior watch history.
- Use the remaining search bar and left-side menu to navigate.
Troubleshooting common results
The history controls are missing
Confirm that you are signed in to the intended Google Account. On mobile, start from the profile picture and use Settings → Manage all history. On a computer, open My Activity and select YouTube History. TV and console apps may place pause and clear commands under Settings in the left menu, with wording that differs from the mobile and computer interfaces.

A video still appears after you changed history
Check which surface you are viewing. Home, Search, and Up Next do not rely on exactly the same signals. A deleted watch entry removes that entry’s influence, but subscriptions, likes, dislikes, recommendation feedback, the video currently playing, and Google Account activity can still affect suggestions. Apply Not interested or Don’t recommend channel to the specific recommendation.
Home is nearly empty after turning off watch history
This can be expected when the account has little or no significant prior watch history. YouTube says Home recommendations may be removed in that situation while the search bar and left-side menu remain. Turn watch history back on if you want YouTube to rebuild personalized Home suggestions from new viewing activity.
You deleted more than intended
Review the deletion period before repeating any action. A time-range deletion can remove both history types, so a search cleanup may also have removed watched videos and vice versa. For future cleanups, use individual-entry removal when only one type or one item must be preserved.

Use a separate signed-in account or YouTube’s Incognito mode for activity that should not shape the account’s normal history. Incognito searches are not saved in search history; pausing history is the account-wide control for stopping new activity of a type from being saved.
Practical privacy and personalization checklist
- Identify whether the problem is one entry, a date range, future saving, or recommendation quality.
- Use individual removal for precise cleanup.
- Read the warning before every bulk deletion because both history types can be affected.
- Pause only the history type you do not want saved.
- Use the listed 3-, 18-, or 36-month automatic-deletion choices for search history when appropriate; verify what your watch-history screen actually offers.
- Use recommendation feedback before erasing useful history.
- Review Google Account activity if suggestions extend beyond YouTube history.
- Expect Home recommendations to disappear when watch history is off and prior watch history is insignificant.
The most controlled approach is usually to remove specific entries, keep useful history enabled, and train recommendations with targeted feedback. Reserve a full time-range deletion and a watch-history shutdown for cases where removing personalization is more important than keeping a populated Home page.
