Android keyboard settings are not universal: the correct steps depend on whether your phone is using Samsung Keyboard, Gboard, or another keyboard. A personal-dictionary entry teaches the keyboard to recognize a word; a text shortcut expands a short trigger into a longer phrase. Identify the active keyboard first, then use its own controls to add, remove, or reset entries.

Identify the keyboard before changing a setting

Keyboard instructions are specific to the keyboard app, not just to Android. Samsung’s support instructions apply to Samsung Keyboard and warn that third-party keyboards use different menus. Gboard has its own correction and suggestion controls, and another keyboard may use entirely different names.

  1. Open any app with a text field, such as Messages, email, or a notes app.
  2. Tap the field so the on-screen keyboard appears. Look for the keyboard’s name, logo, layout, or settings icon. The keyboard currently displayed is the one whose dictionary and replacement rules affect your typing.
  3. If the identity is unclear, open Android’s keyboard settings and check which on-screen keyboard is enabled and which one is the default. You can also search the Settings app for terms such as on-screen keyboard, default keyboard, or the keyboard’s name.
  4. Follow only the section below that matches the keyboard you actually use. Switching keyboards means switching to a different set of dictionary, shortcut, and learned-prediction data.

Menu names and locations can change with a phone model, Android release, keyboard version, region, and language. If a label is missing, search Settings for the distinctive term Text shortcuts, Personal dictionary, or Text correction instead of assuming another keyboard’s path applies.

What you need before editing entries

This is a software-settings task. You do not need to buy a phone, keyboard accessory, repair tool, or manual to complete it. You only need access to the phone, the keyboard you want to configure, and a text field in which to test the result.

Have the exact spelling of the custom word or phrase ready. For a shortcut, decide on both parts before opening settings:

  • Shortcut phrase: the short trigger you type.
  • Expanded phrase: the longer text that Samsung offers for insertion.

Choose a trigger that is unlikely to occur accidentally inside an ordinary word. A distinctive abbreviation is safer than a common standalone word. Test a new entry in a blank note or message before relying on it in an important document.

Personal dictionary, learned words, and text replacement are different

These features are often mixed together, but they solve separate problems:

Feature What it stores What you see while typing Typical removal control
Personal dictionary word A spelling that the keyboard should recognize as valid The word is accepted or offered instead of being treated as a misspelling A dictionary or entry-management control, when the keyboard provides one
Text shortcut A short trigger and a longer expanded phrase The expanded phrase appears as a suggestion after you type the trigger An edit or bin control in the shortcut list
Learned word or prediction A word inferred from your typing behavior The word appears in the predictive toolbar Remove one suggestion, or clear personalized predictions in bulk
Auto-correction setting A rule governing how likely corrections are applied Words may be replaced, underlined, or suggested automatically Toggle the relevant correction feature off or on

For example, adding a technical term to a dictionary should stop it being flagged as an error, but it does not automatically create a long phrase. A text shortcut does the opposite: it is designed to insert a phrase when you type a trigger. Learned predictions are generated from use and are separate from shortcuts that you deliberately create.

Samsung Keyboard: create and manage text shortcuts

Add a shortcut

Samsung Keyboard has a dedicated list for phrase expansion. The current Samsung path is:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General management.
  3. Tap Samsung Keyboard settings.
  4. Tap Text shortcuts.
  5. Tap the + icon.
  6. Enter the short trigger in Shortcut phrase.
  7. Enter the text you want inserted in Expanded phrase.
  8. Tap Add.

The new entry appears in the Text shortcuts list. Keep the trigger distinctive enough that it will not be typed accidentally inside ordinary words. A short sequence such as an agreed abbreviation can work well; a common standalone word usually creates unwanted suggestions.

Use the shortcut while typing

Type the shortcut in a text field. Samsung displays the expanded phrase in the predictive text bar rather than silently replacing the trigger in every situation. Tap that suggestion to insert the full phrase. If you continue typing without selecting the suggestion, the expansion may not be inserted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Edit or delete a shortcut

Return to Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Text shortcuts. Select the saved entry to change its shortcut or expanded phrase. To remove an entry, use the bin icon on the Text shortcuts screen and confirm the deletion if prompted.

When the menu has a different name

Older Samsung devices and some software versions place the same controls under a path such as Language and input > On-screen keyboard > Samsung Keyboard > Smart typing. Samsung notes that options may not exist on older devices or operating systems. Use Settings search for Text shortcuts when the current path is not visible.

Samsung Keyboard: add or remove learned words

Teach Samsung a word through normal typing

Samsung documents a learned-word workflow rather than a separate, universal dictionary-entry form: type the word, finish entering it, and tap the spacebar. The keyboard can then learn the word and later show it in the predictive toolbar. This is useful for names, specialist vocabulary, or a spelling that Samsung repeatedly marks as unusual.

A learned word is not the same as a Text shortcut. It does not map a trigger to a longer phrase, and it may appear only as a prediction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove one learned suggestion

  1. Type until the unwanted word appears in Samsung’s predictive toolbar.
  2. Touch and hold that suggestion.
  3. Tap Remove.

This removes the selected learned suggestion, not every personalized prediction.

Erase all personalized predictions

For a broad reset, open Samsung Keyboard settings > Reset to default settings > Erase personalized predictions > Erase. This is different from deleting one shortcut or one learned word: it clears the keyboard’s personalized prediction data as a group. Your separately configured Text shortcuts are managed from the Text shortcuts list, so inspect that list if you need to remove a phrase-expansion rule as well.

Samsung Keyboard: control correction behavior

Samsung separates several behaviors that can look similar on screen:

  • Predictive text controls whether the keyboard offers likely words in the suggestion bar.
  • Auto replace can complete or replace the word being typed with the word Samsung considers most likely for the sentence.
  • Auto spell check underlines suspected misspellings and offers corrections.

These switches are in Samsung Keyboard settings. Turn off only the behavior causing the problem. For example, disabling Auto replace prevents automatic substitutions but does not necessarily remove underlines from Auto spell check or stop the predictive toolbar.

  1. Open a text field and type the word you want Gboard to recognize.
  2. When Gboard marks it with a red underline, tap the underlined word.
  3. Tap Add to dictionary.

The word is then treated as an accepted spelling by Gboard. The exact prompt can depend on the language and the version of Android or Gboard in use.

Gboard: remove an unwanted suggestion

  1. Type until the unwanted word appears in the suggestion strip.
  2. Touch and hold the suggestion.
  3. Drag it to the bin.

This gesture removes the selected suggestion from the prediction strip. It is not the same operation as adding or editing a deliberate phrase shortcut.

Gboard: adjust suggestion and correction options

To change the kinds of suggestions Gboard displays:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the keyboard in any text field.
  2. Open the keyboard features menu and tap More.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Text correction.
  5. Choose the available suggestion and correction options for your language and device.

The available switches can vary. Google’s help documentation states that some procedures require Android 7.0 or later and that certain suggestion features are limited by supported devices and languages.

What the documented Gboard route does not establish

Google’s Gboard help instructions document adding a word from the red-underlined correction prompt, removing a suggestion by dragging it to the bin, and opening Text correction settings. They do not provide a complete, current procedure for browsing and editing a Personal dictionary list or for creating a phrase-expansion shortcut. Do not assume that a Samsung-style Text shortcuts screen exists in every Gboard build. If you need a precise shortcut-entry workflow for a particular phone and version, use that device’s current Gboard documentation or verify the menus on the device before relying on them.

Gboard and Samsung Keyboard compared

Task Gboard Samsung Keyboard
Add a word Type the word, tap the red-underlined form, then tap Add to dictionary. Type the word and tap the spacebar so Samsung can learn it; the word may later appear in predictions.
Create a phrase shortcut A complete shortcut-entry workflow is not documented in the cited Gboard help. Use Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Text shortcuts > +, then enter a shortcut phrase and expanded phrase.
Remove one unwanted suggestion Touch and hold the suggestion and drag it to the bin. Touch and hold the learned suggestion in the toolbar and tap Remove.
Clear personalized predictions broadly Not covered by the cited Gboard help page. Use Reset to default settings > Erase personalized predictions > Erase in Samsung Keyboard settings.
Version and device limits Some steps require Android 7.0 or later; feature availability also depends on device and language. Options and menu labels can differ or be absent on older devices and operating-system versions.

Troubleshoot common problems

The shortcut never expands

  • Confirm that Samsung Keyboard is active; a shortcut saved in Samsung Keyboard will not control Gboard or another keyboard.
  • Check the exact trigger spelling and spacing in the Text shortcuts list.
  • Look at the predictive bar after typing the trigger. Samsung presents the expanded phrase as a suggestion that you must tap.
  • If the Text shortcuts menu is missing, search Settings for Text shortcuts and check the device’s keyboard and software version.

A valid word is still underlined

  • On Gboard, tap the red-underlined word and choose Add to dictionary.
  • On Samsung Keyboard, finish typing the word and tap the spacebar so it can be learned.
  • Check whether the text field is using a different keyboard or language than the one where you added the word.
  • Remember that Auto spell check and dictionary recognition are separate from phrase shortcuts; turning off a shortcut will not remove an underline.

An unwanted word keeps returning

  • For Gboard, touch and hold the suggestion and drag it to the bin.
  • For Samsung Keyboard, touch and hold the learned suggestion and tap Remove.
  • If many Samsung predictions are wrong, use the broad Erase personalized predictions reset rather than deleting items one at a time.

The keyboard replaces words without asking

On Samsung Keyboard, review Auto replace in Samsung Keyboard settings. Predictive text, Auto replace, and Auto spell check are separate controls, so change the specific switch responsible for the behavior instead of resetting all keyboard data.

The menus do not match these instructions

Manufacturers rename and move settings across Android releases. Confirm the active keyboard, search Settings using the feature name, and check the phone’s software version. Samsung’s current and older paths are both documented, while Gboard’s available options can depend on Android version, device, and language.

Examples of the smallest useful change

If a surname is repeatedly marked as misspelled, add that single word to the dictionary rather than creating a shortcut. On Gboard, use the red-underlined word and Add to dictionary. On Samsung Keyboard, complete the word and tap the spacebar so it can be learned.

If you frequently type a longer, repeated phrase, use Samsung’s Text shortcuts. For instance, a distinctive abbreviation can call up a standard response or address. Type the abbreviation, wait for the expanded phrase in the predictive bar, and tap it. This deliberately inserts the phrase; it does not change the keyboard’s general spell-check behavior.

If one embarrassing or irrelevant prediction appears, remove only that suggestion first. A broad personalized-prediction reset is appropriate when many Samsung suggestions are inaccurate, but it is a larger change than deleting one item.

A safe way to organize custom entries

  1. Decide whether you need recognition of a single spelling, a learned prediction removed, or expansion of a short trigger into a phrase.
  2. Make the smallest change that solves the problem: add one dictionary word, create one shortcut, remove one suggestion, or change one correction switch.
  3. Test the result in a neutral text field before using it in an important message or document.
  4. Use a broad personalized-data reset only when individual removal is impractical, because a reset affects more than one learned prediction.
  5. If the result is unexpected, recheck which keyboard is active; changing keyboard apps changes which dictionary and shortcut controls are in effect.

Frequently asked questions

Is there one universal Android personal-dictionary menu?

No. Android keyboard settings depend on the keyboard app, device, software version, language, and sometimes region. Identify the active keyboard before following a path.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does adding a word create a text replacement?

No. Adding a word teaches the keyboard to recognize a spelling. A text shortcut separately maps a short trigger to a longer phrase.

Can Samsung shortcuts replace text automatically?

Samsung presents the expanded phrase in the predictive text bar. You normally tap that suggestion to insert it; it is not necessarily inserted silently as soon as the trigger is typed.

How do I delete one Samsung learned word without clearing everything?

When it appears in the predictive toolbar, touch and hold it and tap Remove. Do not use the broad erase option unless you intend to clear personalized predictions as a group.

Why can’t I find Text shortcuts?

Confirm that Samsung Keyboard is active, then search Settings for Text shortcuts. Older Samsung software may place the control under Language and input, On-screen keyboard, Samsung Keyboard, and Smart typing. Third-party keyboards may not offer the feature under that name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does the Gboard help route show a complete shortcut list?

The documented Gboard instructions cover adding a word from a correction prompt, removing a suggestion, and opening Text correction. They do not establish a complete current route for browsing a Personal dictionary list or creating phrase shortcuts on every Gboard build.

Will these steps work on every Android phone?

Not necessarily. Google notes that some procedures require Android 7.0 or later and that certain suggestion features depend on supported devices and languages. Samsung also notes that older devices and operating systems may lack some options.

Do I need to purchase anything?

No. Adding words, removing suggestions, changing correction switches, and using Samsung’s Text shortcuts are settings tasks that require no physical product.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between a personal-dictionary word and a text shortcut?

A dictionary word teaches the keyboard to accept a spelling. A text shortcut pairs a short trigger with a longer phrase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I add a Samsung Keyboard text shortcut?

Go to Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Text shortcuts, tap +, enter the Shortcut phrase and Expanded phrase, then tap Add.

How do I add a word in Gboard?

Type the word, tap its red underline, and choose Add to dictionary.

How do I remove a bad suggestion?

In Gboard, touch and hold it and drag it to the bin. In Samsung Keyboard, touch and hold the learned suggestion and tap Remove.

Why does my Samsung shortcut not insert automatically?

Samsung shows the expanded phrase in the predictive bar. Type the trigger and tap that suggestion to insert the phrase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I clear all Samsung learned predictions?

Yes. Open Samsung Keyboard settings > Reset to default settings > Erase personalized predictions > Erase.

Why are my menus different?

Keyboard, Android version, phone model, region, and language can change labels and available options. Search Settings for the feature name and verify the active keyboard.

The Bottom Line

First identify the keyboard you are using. Samsung Keyboard provides a documented Text shortcuts list plus controls for learned words, predictions, Auto replace, and Auto spell check. Gboard documents adding words from the red-underlined correction prompt, removing suggestions, and adjusting Text correction, but its available dictionary and shortcut menus can vary. Make the smallest change, test it, and remember that a dictionary word, learned prediction, and phrase shortcut are different settings.
