You can tune Google Discover without turning the whole feed off. On an Android phone or tablet, open the Google app, tap your profile picture or initial, and choose Settings → Personalization → Manage your interests. From there, use Following to remove topics you followed, or use a Discover card’s More menu to hide a topic or publisher. You must be signed in to manage interests. Google notes that some controls and labels vary by language, region, app version, and the Search settings update currently in progress.

This guide explains what each control does, how to undo it, how to influence recommendations without hiding everything, and how to disable Discover when you want no feed at all.

Understand the four levels of control

Discover settings work at different scopes. Choosing the narrowest control that solves your problem prevents you from losing useful stories along with the unwanted ones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Control What it changes When to use it Can you reverse it?
Unfollow a topic Removes a topic from your explicit Following list. You no longer want updates for a topic you deliberately followed. Yes. You can follow the topic again later.
Not interested in a topic Tell Discover to show fewer stories about the topic on the selected card. A subject keeps appearing even though you did not follow it. Yes, through the Not interested area.
Don’t show content from a source Hides stories from the selected publisher or source. You want to avoid one publisher rather than the entire subject. Yes, through the Not interested area.
Broader recommendation settings Adjust related options such as languages, autoplay, notifications, and ad personalization. The issue concerns how Discover behaves, not one topic or source. Yes; each setting can be changed again.
Turn Discover off Removes the Discover feed from the Google app, or from the mobile Google homepage when that browser option is available. You do not want Discover recommendations at all. Yes. Turn the same switch back on.

These controls are not an absolute block list. Google does not promise that hiding one topic or source will immediately remove every story that is related to it; recommendations can also use account activity, device and other Google-product information, recommendation settings, and location-related settings. The controls reduce or change recommendations rather than guaranteeing a permanent filter.

Open the interests manager on Android

Google’s documented route is available in the Google app on an Android phone or tablet:

  1. Open the Google app.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial in the upper-right corner.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Choose Personalization.
  5. Tap Manage your interests.
  6. Open Following to see topics you currently follow.

Only signed-in Google users can access and manage interests. If the option is missing, confirm that the Google app is using the account you intend to personalize, then sign in before trying again. Google also provides a shortcut from a Discover card: tap the card’s More menu and choose Manage your interests. The exact menu wording can differ while Google updates Search services settings. See Google’s Access & manage your interests instructions.

The route is Android-focused. A tablet may place the profile control in a slightly different position, but the account, Settings, Personalization, and interests steps are the same in principle. If you use several Google accounts, make the change while the account whose Discover feed you are viewing is selected.

Unfollow a topic you previously chose

Following and hiding are separate actions. Unfollowing removes your explicit subscription to a subject; it does not create a publisher block and does not necessarily remove every related recommendation.

  1. Open Google app → profile picture or initial → Settings → Personalization → Manage your interests.
  2. Tap Following.
  3. Find the topic you no longer want.
  4. Tap Following beside that topic. The control changes to show that you are no longer following it.

Topic updates and notifications are separate choices. Removing a topic from Following does not by itself explain every notification setting, so review the topic’s notification controls if alerts continue. Google documents these distinctions in Customize what you find in Discover.

Unfollowing is the best first step when the topic was once useful but is no longer relevant, such as a finished sports season, a completed election, or a temporary project. It is less aggressive than marking the subject as unwanted because it changes your explicit follow list without asking Discover to suppress the subject generally.

Hide an unwanted topic from a Discover card

Use the card-level control when a subject keeps appearing but you do not want to manage your entire interests list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Find a story about the unwanted subject in Discover.
  2. Tap the card’s More menu, usually shown as three dots.
  3. Choose Not interested in the topic. Google fills in the topic name shown on that card.

Discover then uses your signal to reduce stories about that topic. The option is not available in every language or region. If you do not see it, the card, account, language, or location may not support the control at that moment; try another card or review the broader Discover settings instead.

Topic labels are generated from the card, so the wording may be broader or narrower than the headline. Read the label before confirming. If you want fewer stories about a whole subject, select the topic option; if your objection is only to the publisher, use the source option described next.

Hide every story from a particular source

If the subject is useful but one publisher is not, block the source rather than the topic:

  1. Locate a card from the publisher you want to avoid.
  2. Tap More.
  3. Choose Don’t show content from the source.

This is narrower than marking a topic as not interesting. Other publishers can still appear for the same subject. As with topic hiding, source hiding may be unavailable in some languages or regions, and it is a recommendation preference rather than a promise that no related item will ever be shown.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Source hiding is useful when several outlets cover a topic and you want to keep the subject while removing one outlet’s style, frequency, or editorial approach. It will not remove the same story when another publisher supplies it, and it does not block that publisher from appearing in ordinary Google Search results.

Restore a topic or source you hid

Hidden items are reversible. Google’s current app instructions place them under the interests settings:

  1. Open the Google app and tap your profile picture or initial.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Open Interests. Depending on the version of the Search settings interface, this may appear within Personalization or use a slightly different label.
  4. Tap Not interested.
  5. Find the hidden topic or source and tap Unhide.

Google also documents a browser route: open the profile menu, choose Settings, go to Discover → Manage interests → Not interested, and tap Unhide. Because Google is updating Search services settings, the labels may not match every account. The complete reversal guidance is in Google’s Discover customization help.

If you cannot find an item in the list, check that you are signed in to the same account and using the same Google experience where you hid it. A topic you unfollowed is not necessarily listed under Not interested; Following and hidden preferences are separate areas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use likes to improve recommendations

Hiding tells Discover what to reduce; liking tells it what to show more often. On a story you genuinely want to see more of, tap Like on the card if that control is available. Google says liked stories are visible only to you, although selections may be shared anonymously with publishers. Likes are one input among several, so they influence frequency rather than forcing every future card to match the same subject.

Use likes selectively. Liking a single article can signal interest in its broader topic, and repeated signals may affect the mix of recommendations. If a card is merely acceptable rather than something you want more often, leaving it unliked avoids adding a stronger preference. Likes complement, rather than replace, Following and Not interested controls.

How Discover decides what to show

Google describes Discover as a personalized service that can use several categories of information. The possible inputs include activity on your Google Account, information from your device and other Google products, recommendation settings, and location-related settings. That is why two people searching for similar subjects can receive different feeds, and why a hidden card may be followed by a related recommendation.

These inputs also explain why a single action is not an instant, permanent filter. A card can be classified under a neighboring topic, supplied by a different publisher, or remain visible briefly while the feed refreshes. Use the control that matches the problem, then give the feed time to update rather than repeatedly hiding unrelated cards.

Adjust other Discover settings

Topic controls do not cover every feed behavior. Google’s separate Discover settings include the following options:

  • Story language: hide stories written in another language when that option is offered.
  • Video autoplay: change whether videos start automatically over mobile data or Wi-Fi.
  • Notifications: control Discover alerts independently of following a topic.
  • Weather units: choose the temperature units used by weather information.
  • Ads and personalization: adjust the ads you see. Google states that Discover cannot be used without ads, although ad personalization can be changed.

Open the Google app, tap your profile picture or initial, choose Settings, and look for the Discover settings section. Menu names and availability depend on the device and region. For the documented options, see Change your Discover settings.

These settings solve different problems. For example, changing autoplay does not hide a sports topic, and changing ad personalization does not turn off sponsored material entirely. Adjust only the behavior you want to change so that you do not weaken useful recommendation signals unnecessarily.

Turn Discover off completely

Disable the feed in the Google app

  1. Open the Google app.
  2. Tap your profile picture or initial.
  3. Choose Settings.
  4. Tap General.
  5. Turn Discover off.

This removes the Discover feed from the Google app. It does not delete your Google account, Search history, or other Google services. You can return to the same switch to enable the feed again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hide Discover on the mobile Google homepage

Google documents a separate control for mobile google.com:

  1. Open the Google homepage in a mobile browser and tap your profile picture or initial.
  2. Tap More settings.
  3. Open Other settings.
  4. Turn Show Discover on home page off.

This browser switch is not available in every country or language. It controls the homepage experience and is separate from the Google app’s General → Discover switch. Google’s instructions are at Turn off Discover.

Turning the app feed off is the broadest option. It is appropriate when you do not want a recommendation feed at all, but it is unnecessary if you only dislike one topic or source. Both off switches are reversible through the same menus.

Why unwanted stories can still appear

A hide or unfollow action changes recommendation signals, but Discover combines more than one signal. Google lists device and other Google-product information, account activity, recommendation settings, and location-related settings as possible inputs. A story may also be classified under a related topic, come from a different source, or remain visible while the feed refreshes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Related subjects: hiding one named topic does not necessarily hide neighboring subjects.
  • Different publishers: blocking one source leaves other sources eligible for the same story.
  • Account mismatch: managing interests while signed out, or in a different account, can produce unexpected results.
  • Regional differences: some controls are not offered in every language or country.
  • Changing labels: Google is updating Search settings, so a path may use Interests, Personalization, or a nearby label on your version.

When a preference seems ineffective, repeat the action from a fresh card, verify the active account, and check the Not interested list to confirm that the item was recorded. Do not assume that clearing the Google app’s cache, reinstalling the app, or changing your phone will create a different Discover profile; the documented controls are account-based preferences.

A practical decision guide

  • Choose unfollow when you intentionally followed a topic and simply changed your mind.
  • Choose Not interested in the topic when you want fewer stories about a subject across different publishers.
  • Choose Don’t show content from the source when you trust the subject but not one publisher.
  • Use Like on genuinely useful cards when the feed is too broad and you want to strengthen a positive signal.
  • Change Discover settings for language, autoplay, notifications, weather units, or ads rather than hiding unrelated topics.
  • Turn Discover off only when you want to remove the recommendation feed itself.

What to check before assuming a setting is broken

  1. Confirm sign-in: interests management requires a signed-in Google account.
  2. Confirm the account: tap the profile image and verify that it is the account whose Discover feed you are viewing.
  3. Use the card menu: topic and source controls appear on an individual Discover card, not necessarily in the main Settings screen.
  4. Look for alternate labels: Personalization, Interests, and Discover may be arranged differently during Google’s settings update.
  5. Check availability: language and country restrictions can remove the hide controls or the browser homepage switch.
  6. Review hidden items: open Not interested and use Unhide if you previously hid something by mistake.
  7. Distinguish app from browser: the Google app switch and the mobile google.com homepage switch are independent.
  8. Allow for recommendation changes: a preference reduces eligibility; Google does not promise immediate removal of every related story.

These checks address the documented account, availability, and interface limitations; they cannot guarantee that every related recommendation disappears immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I manage my interests in Google Discover?

In the Google app on Android, tap your profile picture or initial, then Settings → Personalization → Manage your interests. Open Following to manage followed topics. You must be signed in. A Discover card’s More menu can also link to Manage your interests.

How do I hide a topic in Google Discover?

On a card about that subject, tap More and choose Not interested in the topic. The control may be unavailable in some languages or regions, and it reduces related recommendations rather than guaranteeing that every similar story disappears.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I stop seeing stories from one source?

Open a card from that publisher, tap More, and choose Don’t show content from the source. This is narrower than hiding a topic, so other publishers can still cover the same subject.

What is the difference between unfollowing and hiding a topic?

Unfollowing removes a topic from your explicit Following list. Hiding a topic sends a negative recommendation signal for cards about that subject. Neither action is a guaranteed block of every related story, and they are managed in different areas.

Can I undo Not interested or source hiding?

Yes. In the Google app, open your profile menu, go to Settings → Interests → Not interested, find the item, and tap Unhide. Labels can differ while Google updates Search settings. A browser path is Settings → Discover → Manage interests → Not interested → Unhide.

Why do I still see a topic after hiding it?

Discover can use account activity, device and other Google-product information, recommendation settings, and location-related settings. The story may be classified under a related topic, come from another source, or remain while the feed refreshes. Verify the active account and review the Not interested list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I turn off Discover but keep Google Search?

Yes. In the Google app, use profile picture or initial → Settings → General → Discover and turn it off. This removes the Discover feed without deleting your account, Search history, or other Google services.

Can I hide Discover on the Google homepage in a browser?

On mobile google.com, Google documents profile picture or initial → More settings → Other settings → Show Discover on home page, then turn the switch off. This option is not available in every country or language and is separate from the Google app switch.

Can Discover work without ads?

Google says Discover cannot be used without ads. You can adjust ad personalization in Discover settings, but that does not remove advertising completely.

Do likes affect everyone who uses my phone?

Google says liked stories are visible only to you, although selections may be shared anonymously with publishers. Likes influence your signed-in Discover recommendations and are one signal among several.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use Following to unfollow topics, a card’s More menu to mark a topic as not interesting or hide a source, and Not interested → Unhide to reverse either choice. Use Likes and the broader Discover settings for fine-tuning. If you want no recommendation feed, turn Discover off in the Google app or, where supported, on the mobile Google homepage. Controls require the correct signed-in account and can vary by language, region, and Google’s changing menu labels.
