To stop Xbox Game Pass from charging you again, sign in to Microsoft Services & subscriptions with the Microsoft account that purchased it, select Manage beside Game Pass, and turn off recurring billing or follow the cancellation prompts. Check the confirmation and expiry date: if the page offers Turn on recurring billing, renewal is already off.
Turn off recurring billing for Xbox Game Pass
- Sign in with the purchasing account. Use the Microsoft account that bought the subscription. If Game Pass is missing, check whether another Microsoft account—including a family member’s or child’s account—owns it.
- Open Services & subscriptions. Go to account.microsoft.com/services and locate the Game Pass subscription.
- Choose Manage. Select Manage next to the subscription, then choose Turn off recurring billing or the cancellation option shown.
- Complete the confirmation flow. Follow the prompts and read the resulting status and expiry date. Microsoft’s cancellation guidance says an Xbox subscription is canceled by turning off recurring billing: Xbox subscription cancellation guidance.
- Verify the setting. If the page now says Turn on recurring billing, recurring billing is off. Do not select that option if your aim is to avoid another charge.
Button wording and available choices can vary with subscription status and the account interface. Microsoft’s account page is the place to manage subscriptions and recurring billing; the live confirmation screen is the authoritative indication of the state of your subscription.
What happens after you turn renewal off?
Turning off recurring billing prevents future automatic billing. It does not necessarily end access immediately: Microsoft says you can continue using the subscription until it expires. Use the expiry date displayed in your account to see how long access remains. If the page offers Turn on recurring billing, that is a status signal that the subscription is set to expire rather than renew automatically.

Cancellation and refunds are separate
Stopping a future renewal does not by itself mean you qualify for a refund. Microsoft says eligibility depends on factors including the subscription, timing, and country of purchase. Use the Xbox-specific cancellation flow and read any refund choice it presents before confirming. The available choices may differ by region, subscription status, and billing provider; there is no universal refund entitlement established for every Game Pass cancellation.

If Game Pass is missing from your account
Check which Microsoft account bought it
A subscription is managed by the account that owns it, not necessarily the account currently signed in on a console. Sign out and try other Microsoft accounts that may have made the purchase. For a subscription owned by a child or family member, use that owner’s account to manage billing.
Check whether a third party bills you
If Microsoft did not charge you, Microsoft directs customers to manage subscriptions purchased through a third-party provider with that provider. Check the receipt or bank statement to identify the seller, then use that seller’s account or support process to stop renewal. Want to keep Game Pass but change the billing?
Before canceling, review the current recurrence, payment method, and next charge or expiry information in Services & subscriptions. If available for your account, plan changes and payment-method updates are handled through account settings. The options depend on subscription and account state, so verify what the page offers rather than assuming a particular plan or payment method is available.

Prepaid subscriptions are paid in advance, and Microsoft says their payment method cannot be changed. A prepaid code or gift card for a future subscription does not switch off recurring billing on an existing subscription; manage the existing subscription directly through its billing controls.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming removing a payment card cancels the subscription. Use the recurring-billing or cancellation control and verify the subscription status instead.
- Turning recurring billing back on accidentally. If the page displays Turn on recurring billing, renewal is already off.
- Expecting cancellation to mean an automatic refund. Review the refund option in the cancellation flow; eligibility varies.
- Trying to manage someone else’s subscription from your account. Sign in as the account owner or identify the actual billing provider.
- Buying hardware or a manual to stop a charge. Account billing is controlled in the subscription settings, not by a console, controller, or printed guide.
