The right way to manage a Game Pass download depends on whether you are using an Xbox console or a Windows PC. On Windows, the Xbox PC app is the main Game Pass library, while Microsoft Store also installs games and controls its own app updates. On a console, download queues, storage, and game-update behavior are controlled by the console software, whose labels can change with system updates.
Use this guide to identify the correct app, choose between a local install and cloud gaming, control Windows Store app updates, reclaim space safely, and troubleshoot downloads without relying on outdated menu paths.
Start by identifying your platform and the app you are using
Before changing a setting, establish where the download is taking place. The instructions and controls are not interchangeable between an Xbox console and a Windows PC.
Windows PC: Xbox app and Microsoft Store
Microsoft describes the Xbox PC app as a central place to browse the Game Pass library on Windows and download and install games. Microsoft’s Windows gaming guidance also describes downloading through the Xbox app and using cloud gaming when a title and membership support it.

Microsoft Store is a second Windows installation route. Microsoft says the Store on Windows and Xbox can be used to download and install games; its general guidance is available at Get trusted apps and games from Microsoft Store. A game installed from the Store may still be associated with your Microsoft account and Xbox services, but the Store’s app-update setting is separate from game-update behavior.
Xbox console: use the console’s current labels
On a console, treat the download queue and storage manager as console-specific controls. Xbox Support has pages for viewing installation status and managing storage, but the accessible versions do not establish a current, universal menu path. The interface can differ by console generation, system update, and language.
When you follow console instructions, look for the current on-screen terms for installation status, queue, games and apps, storage devices, or manage game and add-on content. Do not assume that a path written for an older dashboard is still present.
Do not install the old standalone Game Pass app as your download workflow
Xbox Wire reported on September 25, 2024 that new downloads of the older standalone Xbox Game Pass app would stop beginning in November 2024. Use the current Xbox app on Windows, Microsoft Store, or the built-in console interface instead, and verify that the app is available for your platform.
Where do I find my Game Pass downloads on Windows?
Find a title in the Xbox PC app
- Sign in to the Microsoft account that holds your Game Pass membership.
- Open the Xbox PC app and browse or search the Game Pass library.
- Open the game’s details page and choose the install or download control if you want a local copy.
- Watch the app’s installation area for progress, queued items, and completion status. The exact wording can change as the app is updated.
The Xbox app is the most direct starting point for a Game Pass game on Windows because Microsoft presents it as the library hub. If the title page sends you to Microsoft Store, complete the installation there rather than launching an obsolete Game Pass app.

Find a title in Microsoft Store
- Open Microsoft Store in Windows and sign in with the account used for Game Pass.
- Search for the game and check that the listing is the intended Windows version.
- Select the install or get control and follow the storage prompt shown by Windows.
- Return to the Store’s library or downloads view to check the current status.
If the Xbox app and Store show different states, confirm that both are signed in to the same Microsoft account, then restart the app that began the installation. Avoid starting duplicate installs from both apps at once.
Should you install a Game Pass game or use cloud gaming?
Windows gives you two fundamentally different ways to play eligible Game Pass titles: download the game to local storage, or stream it through cloud gaming when the title and your membership support that option. Microsoft documents both routes in its Windows gaming guidance.

Cloud gaming is not a universal replacement for downloads. Availability is title- and membership-dependent, so check the play options shown for the specific game in the current Xbox app or Microsoft’s Windows gaming information.
How do I change where Xbox games install on a Windows PC?
The available drive selector and wording can vary between the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, Windows edition, and app updates. For that reason, use the storage choice shown at the moment you start an installation rather than relying on a fixed path copied from an older guide.
- Start the installation from the Xbox PC app or Microsoft Store.
- Read the installation dialog for a drive or location selector before confirming.
- If a different drive is offered, select it and confirm the install.
- If no selector appears, open Windows storage settings and review the location used for new apps, then reopen the installer. The exact settings labels can differ by Windows release.
- After changing a default, begin a small or free installation to verify that the new location is actually being used.

Plan space before pressing Install
- Check free space on the target drive, not merely total capacity.
- Leave room for updates; the initial download is not necessarily the final space requirement.
- Keep the operating system and essential applications on a drive with comfortable free space.
- If the game is available in the cloud and local space is tight, consider streaming instead of installing.
Microsoft’s published material establishes that local downloads consume storage and that cloud play can avoid a full installation. It does not provide a universal Game Pass size allowance or a single required free-space number for every game, so use the size shown by the current installer.

How do I pause, cancel, or resume a Windows download?
Use the queue or downloads view in the same app that started the installation. A download started in Microsoft Store should be managed in Store; one started in the Xbox app should be managed there unless the app directs you to Store.
- Open the app’s current downloads, queue, or installation view.
- Select the game that is active or waiting.
- Choose the displayed pause, cancel, resume, or retry action.
- After changing networks, freeing space, or signing back in, return to the same view and resume the item.
If a canceled download leaves an incomplete entry, close and reopen the app, then check the library before starting a second copy. Starting another install immediately can create confusing duplicate entries or consume space twice until cleanup completes.

This controls Store-delivered app updates. It should not be described as a universal switch for every Game Pass game update or for Xbox console system updates.

If you turn off automatic Store app updates, that does not prove that a console game will stop updating, nor does it necessarily prevent a game installed through another Windows route from receiving its own update.

Use the console’s built-in storage and games-and-apps management interface, but verify the labels on your own system before following a path. Xbox Support provides a storage-management page at Manage storage and an installation-status page at View the status of your software installation.

A Game Pass entitlement and a local installation are different things: deleting game files frees space, while your ability to reinstall still depends on the title being available to your account and membership at that time.

How should I handle updates when storage is nearly full?
Updates need room on the device even when a game is already installed. When an update will not start, first identify whether the problem is a full target drive, a paused queue, or an account or service issue.
- Open the relevant queue and identify the exact item that is blocked.
- Check free space on the drive or console storage selected for that item.
- Uninstall an unused game or add-on through the platform’s own storage controls.
- Retry the update from the same queue.
- If local space remains constrained and the title supports cloud gaming for your membership, use streaming instead of maintaining a full installation.

The Windows Store automatic-update option applies to Store apps. It is not evidence of a single switch governing Windows game updates, console games, and console system software together.
Following a console path copied from another generation
