If a Galaxy widget is blank or stops updating, check two different systems: the widget’s placement on the Home screen and the app’s permissions in Settings. Battery restrictions are a third control. Open Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions to review access, and use Settings > Battery > Background usage limits to control background activity. These settings affect one another in practice, but removing a widget does not revoke permissions, and granting a permission does not guarantee that every widget will refresh.

The labels and menu locations can differ by Galaxy model, One UI release and region. If a route looks different, use Settings search for Permissions or Background usage limits.

Understand the three controls before changing anything

A widget is a small view of an app placed on a Home screen. The Home screen controls whether that view exists and where it appears. The app’s Permissions page controls access to information such as location, calendar, contacts or notifications. Battery controls determine how often the app may run when you are not actively using it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Home-screen widget controls: add, move or remove the widget.
  • App permissions: allow, deny or conditionally allow access to protected data and device functions.
  • Background usage limits: let Galaxy automatically sleep an app, put it into deep sleep, or exempt it from automatic sleep.

Samsung does not provide a universal, separate “widget permission” switch for every widget. A widget may fail because its app lacks a relevant permission, because the app is restricted in the background, because the widget has an internal refresh setting, or because of a temporary app or network problem.

These controls solve different problems. Re-adding a widget can fix a missing Home-screen object, but it does not change what the app can read. Granting calendar or location access can supply data to the app, but it cannot force an app that is in deep sleep to run while the phone is idle. Conversely, removing a battery restriction may restore refreshes without changing any permission. Treat each change as a separate test.

Add, move or remove a widget

Add a widget in One UI 7

  1. Long-press an empty area of the Home screen.
  2. Tap Widgets.
  3. Find and select the app or widget you want.
  4. Tap Add. If the widget offers sizes or styles, choose one before placing it.

You can then drag the widget to another Home-screen panel or position. Samsung’s One UI 7 instructions are from its Canadian support guidance; another Galaxy model may display slightly different labels.

Move, resize or refresh the placement

Long-press the widget to drag it to a different panel. If the widget offers resize handles, use them to make more room for the information it displays. A larger widget does not automatically receive more permissions or a higher refresh rate. If the widget is present but stale, compare its information with the parent app before removing and adding it again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remove a widget without uninstalling its app

  1. Long-press the widget.
  2. Tap Remove.

Removing the widget changes only the Home-screen placement. The app remains installed, and its permissions and battery settings remain unchanged. To restore the widget later, repeat the add procedure.

Review the app permissions that a widget needs

When a widget cannot show a particular kind of information, inspect the permissions for its parent app. Do not grant every permission automatically; allow only access that matches the feature you intend to use.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Select the app that supplies the widget.
  4. Tap Permissions.
  5. Review the Allowed and Not allowed sections. Select a permission and choose the option offered by your phone, such as Allow only while using the app, Ask every time or Deny.

Some apps expose additional choices, and not every widget relies on a permission that appears in this list. For example, a weather widget may need location access for local forecasts, while a calendar widget may need calendar access. If the relevant permission is already allowed and the widget still fails, continue with the battery and app troubleshooting steps rather than repeatedly changing permissions.

Permission symptoms and safe checks

  • Blank or generic location information: check the app’s location permission and any location switch the app requires.
  • Missing calendar or task entries: review calendar or contacts access as appropriate.
  • Data appears only after opening the app: inspect background limits; permission alone may not allow regular refresh.
  • Permission keeps reverting: Android may remove permissions from an app that has been unused for a long period. Reopen the app and review its Permissions page again.

Use the least permissive choice that supports the feature. “Allow only while using the app” may be suitable for a widget whose data is refreshed when you open the app, but it may not provide the location access an app needs for unattended updates. “Ask every time” can create repeated prompts and is less convenient for a widget that needs regular access. If you deny a permission, the widget may continue to appear while showing incomplete or generic information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Permission controls also do not override an app’s own account, subscription, synchronization or network requirements. If the app itself cannot display the information after you open it, changing Galaxy permissions is unlikely to solve the underlying problem.

Check which app is using battery in the background

Do not place apps into deep sleep based only on the fact that a widget exists. First identify the app associated with unusual drain.

  1. Open Settings and go to Battery. On some older interfaces, open Battery and device care first, then Battery.
  2. Open the battery-usage graph or its details view. The wording and layout vary by software version.
  3. Look for an app with a disproportionate amount of background activity compared with how often you use it.
  4. Note whether the app provides alerts, navigation, synchronization or another function you expect while the screen is off.

A high total percentage does not by itself prove that an app is misbehaving: a frequently used app can legitimately consume more power. The useful clue is background activity that is high relative to your use and to the app’s purpose.

Check the time span represented by the graph before drawing a conclusion. A short period that includes setup, a large download or navigation can make an app look unusually active. Look again after ordinary use, and change one setting at a time. This gives you a practical before-and-after comparison without assuming a particular battery-saving percentage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If several apps show background use, start with the one whose activity is least important to you. Restricting every app at once can make it impossible to tell which change stopped a needed notification or synchronization task.

Choose the least restrictive background limit that solves the problem

Under Settings > Battery > Background usage limits, Galaxy phones can automatically manage unused apps and can maintain lists for sleeping, deep sleeping and never sleeping apps. The exact lists and wording vary by model.

Setting Background behavior Likely effect on updates and notifications Use it when
Sleeping apps The app is restricted and may still run occasionally in the background. Refreshes or alerts can be less frequent, but the app is not completely prevented from occasional activity. You want a moderate reduction for an app that is not time-critical.
Deep sleeping apps The app does not run in the background and works only when you open it. Updates and notifications are available only after you open the app, so background alerts can be delayed or absent. You rarely use the app and accept manual refresh and delayed alerts.
Never sleeping apps The app is excluded from automatic sleep management. Background synchronization and alerts have the best chance of continuing, although the app can use more background battery. You depend on timely messages, navigation, device services or reliable synchronization.

Samsung describes sleeping apps as able to run occasionally, while deep sleeping apps work only when opened. That distinction is more important than the label: deep sleep is a strong battery intervention, not a harmless widget setting.

Samsung’s exact wording is: “Deep sleeping apps: Apps set to deep sleep will not run in the background. You will receive app updates and notifications only when you open the app.” In practical terms, a widget may remain visible while its value stays unchanged until you launch the app. The setting limits the app’s background work; it does not remove the widget graphic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Put one app into a sleep list

  1. Open Settings > Battery > Background usage limits (or the corresponding Battery and device care route on an older interface).
  2. Choose Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps.
  3. Use the add control, select the app, and confirm.
  4. Wait long enough to observe the result, then check whether the widget, synchronization and notifications still behave as you need.

Choose deep sleep only when manual opening is acceptable. A messaging, navigation, security, wearable-companion or device-service app is generally a poor candidate if you need it to alert or synchronize while closed. If a required alert stops, remove the app from the deep-sleep list and test again.

Exclude an app from automatic sleep

  1. Open Background usage limits.
  2. Tap Never sleeping apps.
  3. Add the app whose background work you need to preserve.

This exception prevents automatic sleep; it does not promise unlimited runtime or guarantee that an individual third-party app will refresh on a particular schedule. Because the app may run more often, add only apps for which background behavior is genuinely important.

What the lists do not guarantee

Neither Sleeping nor Never sleeping is a promise of a specific refresh interval. The app can still be affected by its own synchronization schedule, connectivity, account state and software behavior. Likewise, adding an app to Never sleeping can preserve its opportunity to run but cannot make a broken widget or unavailable server data appear. Use these lists to control Galaxy’s broad background policy, then evaluate the app’s actual behavior.

Why automatic sleeping can change over time

Samsung’s device-management system uses factors such as usage patterns, periods of inactivity and background battery consumption when assigning sleeping or deep-sleep behavior. Consequently, an app that you stop using may later appear in a sleep list even if you did not add it manually. The Never sleeping list is the documented exception to automatic sleep management, but behavior can still differ by model and software version.

Review the lists after a major One UI update or after noticing that a widget or notification has stopped refreshing. This is more reliable than assuming the same list and labels will remain unchanged across Galaxy generations. If a menu has moved, search Settings for the exact terms rather than changing unrelated battery options.

Use Power saving mode for an immediate, broad reduction

Power saving mode is a device-wide battery measure, not a widget-permission fix. It can reduce background activity and limit selected features so the phone lasts longer when charging is not available. Because it affects more than one app, use it when you need an immediate extension of battery life rather than as the first response to a single misbehaving widget.

Turn it on from the phone’s Battery settings or the Quick panel, depending on your model, and review the options shown before confirming. If a needed background function becomes unreliable, turn Power saving mode off and use a targeted app limit instead. Samsung notes that available options and paths vary by model, software version and region.

Troubleshoot a widget that still will not update

1. Confirm that the widget itself is present

Long-press an empty Home-screen area and open Widgets to verify that the widget is installed and available. If it was removed, add it again. If the app is missing from the widget picker, update or reinstall the app before changing battery restrictions.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Open the app once

Launch the parent app and complete any setup, sign-in or permission prompt. Deep-sleep rules allow an app to work when opened, so opening it can also reveal an account, network or in-app setting that the widget needs.

3. Check the relevant permission

Use Settings > Apps > [app] > Permissions and verify access for the information the widget is meant to display. Select the least permissive option that still supports the feature.

4. Check battery lists

Look in Sleeping apps, Deep sleeping apps and Never sleeping apps. If the widget must update without opening the app, remove the app from deep sleep and test it under the less restrictive setting first.

5. Test notification and refresh behavior separately

Wait through a normal update interval, then compare the widget with the app’s own screen and with notifications. A widget can display current data when opened even when background refresh is blocked; that does not mean the permission setting is wrong. A notification arriving while the widget is stale can indicate that the widget has its own refresh behavior rather than a general app failure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Reverse the last change if the problem began immediately afterward

Remove the app from the sleep list or disable Power saving mode, then test again. If the issue remains, the cause may be the app, its account, network access or a software-specific bug rather than a Galaxy permission control.

7. Avoid changing several controls simultaneously

Record the original permission and battery-list state, make one adjustment, and observe the result. This is especially important for apps that provide both a widget and notifications. If you change permissions, Power saving mode and deep sleep together, you will not know which setting affected the result.

Decide which setting fits common situations

Your priority Recommended first action Trade-off to watch
Save battery from an infrequently used app Review Battery usage, then try Sleeping apps. Occasional refreshes or alerts may be delayed.
Stop all background activity from a rarely opened app Use Deep sleeping apps. You must open the app for updates and notifications.
Keep a time-sensitive app reliable Add it to Never sleeping apps and avoid deep sleep. It may consume more background battery.
Extend battery life for the next few hours Use Power saving mode temporarily. Multiple device features and background tasks may be limited.
Fix a widget showing no protected data Review the app’s Permissions page, then test its battery status. Granting permission alone may not correct a widget-specific problem.
Keep a widget visible but stop its app from using background power Remove the widget, then consider Sleeping or Deep sleeping if you do not need alerts. The app’s permissions remain unchanged, and deep sleep stops background updates.

A maintenance routine that avoids surprises

  • After installing a widget, open its app and complete setup before judging its refresh behavior.
  • When battery life changes, inspect the Battery usage details before changing several settings at once.
  • Apply one background restriction at a time so you can identify which change affected updates.
  • Keep essential communication, navigation and device-service apps out of deep sleep unless you have tested an acceptable alternative.
  • After a One UI or app update, recheck permissions and sleep lists because menu labels and automatic management can change.
  • If you stop relying on a widget, remove it from the Home screen; do not assume that removal also reduces the parent app’s background activity.

The practical order is simple: place the widget on the Home screen, verify the app permission tied to the data it displays, inspect actual battery use, and then apply the mildest background limit that meets your goal. Reserve deep sleep and broad Power saving mode for situations where their effect on refreshes and alerts is acceptable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does removing a Galaxy widget revoke the app’s permissions?

No. Removing a widget changes its Home-screen placement only. The app stays installed with the same permissions and battery-list status. Review Settings > Apps > the app > Permissions if you want to change access.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my Galaxy widget visible but not updating?

Check whether the parent app is in Sleeping or Deep sleeping apps, whether the relevant permission is allowed, and whether the app itself shows current data when opened. Deep sleeping prevents background operation, so updates and notifications appear only after you open the app.

Should I put every battery-hungry app into deep sleep?

No. First inspect Battery usage and compare background activity with how often you use the app. Deep sleep is suitable only when delayed updates and notifications are acceptable. Use the less restrictive Sleeping option when occasional background activity is still useful.

What is the difference between Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps?

Samsung says a Sleeping app may still run occasionally in the background. A Deep sleeping app does not run in the background and works only when opened, so updates and notifications can be delayed or absent until then.

Which apps should not be deep sleeping?

Avoid deep sleep for apps whose background alerts or synchronization you rely on, such as messaging, navigation, security, wearable-companion and device-service apps. If an expected alert stops, remove the app from Deep sleeping apps and test again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What does Never sleeping apps do?

It exempts an app from Galaxy’s automatic sleep management, giving background synchronization and alerts a better chance to continue. It can also allow more background battery use and does not guarantee a specific refresh schedule.

Can granting a permission fix every widget problem?

No. Permissions control access to protected information, but a widget can also be affected by battery limits, its own refresh setting, account or network problems, or an app-specific issue. Test the app and its battery status separately.

Why can’t I find Background usage limits?

Menu names vary by Galaxy model, One UI version and region. On some older phones, open Settings > Battery and device care > Battery first. You can also use Settings search for “Background usage limits” or “Permissions”.

The Bottom Line

Manage these settings separately: add or remove the widget on the Home screen, review its app access under Settings > Apps > Permissions, and inspect battery use before choosing Sleeping, Deep sleeping or Never sleeping. Use the mildest limit that solves the drain, because Deep sleeping stops background work and can delay updates and notifications.
