GTA VI is not released yet. As of October 13, 2026, the available wanted-system information comes from Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson’s interview with IGN, as reported by GamesRadar+, rather than from a complete Rockstar manual or hands-on testing. Rockstar currently lists Grand Theft Auto VI for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with a November 19, 2026 release date on its official game page.

The reported system reaches six stars, and police can recognize more than the vehicle you are driving. They may retain details about clothing, faces, the vehicle and whether Jason and Lucia are together. The safest planning principle is therefore to break contact while changing what police can identify—not to assume that simply driving faster or swapping cars automatically clears a wanted level.

What is confirmed about GTA 6’s wanted system?

GamesRadar+’s report on Rob Nelson’s IGN interview says the wanted system in GTA 6 reaches six stars. The report does not provide a star-by-star explanation of which units, weapons, roadblocks or search behaviors appear at each level. Treat six as the reported maximum system count, not as a complete escalation chart.

Nelson also describes a reporting condition: “The wanted system in GTA 6 requires that someone witness the crime, or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported to the law,” according to the GamesRadar+ report. That is a quoted developer statement about how crimes become reported. It should not be expanded into a claim that every crime in the final game follows exactly the same sequence.

The same coverage says police can identify details involving:

  • the clothes the characters are wearing;
  • their faces;
  • the vehicle they are using; and
  • whether Jason and Lucia are together.

Those details make recognition a continuing problem after the first sighting. The reporting does not establish that changing an outfit, hairstyle or appearance always removes recognition, so those actions should not be treated as guaranteed wanted-level resets.

How many wanted stars are in GTA 6?

The reported answer is six stars. No reliable public breakdown currently explains what one, two, three, four, five or six stars specifically trigger. Until Rockstar publishes more detail or the released game demonstrates otherwise, avoid guides that assign exact police tactics, response times or cooldowns to individual stars as if they were confirmed.

A star level also does not tell you whether police still have direct contact with the characters. The coverage describes stars changing from white to red after contact is broken; its interpretation is that the police are searching rather than actively pursuing. That color meaning is an interpretation in the report, not an officially documented legend, so use the visual state as a cue to stay cautious rather than as proof that the wanted level has ended.

The core evasion principle: remove the details police know

Nelson’s comments point to a recognition-based system. Police may know the original vehicle, see the characters’ faces or clothing, and know whether Jason and Lucia are together. Evasion is therefore about interrupting contact and reducing the number of matching details.

This does not mean every tactic works in every situation. A vehicle change can help when police are tracking the current car, but it is not described as an automatic clearance. Splitting Jason and Lucia can reduce police perception when being together is one of the details officers recognize, but it is also situational. Going on foot may be more effective than continuing to drive in a dense city pursuit, especially in the reported three-star example.

When does a crime become a wanted situation?

The witness-or-alarm explanation matters because it separates committing an action from that action being reported to law enforcement. Nelson’s wording says a crime needs to be witnessed or an alarm needs to be set off for it to be reported. That does not give players a guaranteed way to perform crimes without consequences, and it does not establish that every mission or activity uses identical triggers.

Use the distinction as a planning question: has anyone actually seen what happened, or has an alarm communicated it? If the answer is unclear, do not assume that a delayed response means the event was ignored. Conversely, do not treat the statement as proof that an unseen crime can never produce a later search. The final game may connect individual activities to different scripted or systemic reporting conditions.

A reported step-by-step response to a police pursuit

The following sequence turns Nelson’s examples into a practical decision process. It is guidance based on the reported interview, not a guaranteed procedure for every mission or final-game scenario.

  1. Determine whether the crime has been reported. A witness or an alarm must report the crime for law enforcement to act, according to Nelson’s quoted explanation. Do not assume that an unseen action has produced the same response as a witnessed one.
  2. Break immediate contact without making recognition easier. If officers are looking directly at you, prioritize getting out of their active view and creating separation. The report distinguishes breaking direct contact from fully clearing the wanted state.
  3. Change vehicles when the opportunity is safe. Nelson says police know what the characters are driving and describes a new vehicle no longer matching the old vehicle recognition. Swap cars only when doing so does not keep you exposed or lead officers directly to the replacement vehicle.
  4. Consider separating Jason and Lucia. Because police can recognize whether the pair is together, splitting up can lower their perception of the characters, according to Nelson. This is not a promise that both characters become invisible or that the wanted level disappears immediately.
  5. Choose alleys and foot travel in a difficult city chase. For the reported three-star city pursuit, Nelson says fleeing by car can be difficult and that going on foot into alleys is usually the better option. Use this as a context-specific choice when streets are keeping you visible, not as a universal rule that cars are always worse.
  6. Read the pursuit state conservatively. If the stars appear to change color after contact is broken, continue behaving as though a search may still be active. The report’s white-to-red explanation is not an official published rule, and no exact search duration has been disclosed.

Vehicle escape versus going on foot

There is no complete ranking of escape methods, but the reported three-star example gives a useful comparison for city pursuits.

Option When it may help What the reporting supports Important limit
Keep driving the current vehicle You have open space and police have not established a strong visual match. None of Nelson’s quoted examples presents staying in the known vehicle as the preferred solution in a difficult three-star city chase. Police may recognize the vehicle, so speed alone may not solve the problem.
Change vehicles Police are tracking the vehicle you used and a safe replacement is available. Nelson says changing vehicles can lower police perception because the new vehicle no longer matches the old recognition. A swap alone is not stated to clear the wanted level or erase face and clothing recognition.
Split Jason and Lucia Both characters are being recognized together. Nelson says separating them can lower police perception. The sources do not define how far apart they must be, how long separation lasts or whether both characters share the same wanted state.
Leave the car and use alleys on foot A city pursuit is difficult, particularly in the reported three-star example. Nelson says going on foot into alleys is usually the better option in that situation. This is situational advice, not a guarantee for every district, star level or mission.

How to decide between a car, a new car and alleys

Stay in the vehicle when movement is still buying distance

Continuing to drive makes sense only while the road network is helping you create separation and the current vehicle is not keeping you easy to identify. The public information does not specify a top speed, route type or distance that guarantees success. Avoid treating a faster car as a substitute for breaking recognition.

Switch vehicles when the current car is the main identifier

Nelson specifically connects vehicle changes with lower police perception. If officers have identified the car, a replacement can remove one known detail. The maneuver is strongest when you can make the change without remaining in direct view and without immediately leading police to the new vehicle.

Go on foot when city streets keep reopening contact

The reported three-star example favors alleys on foot because a city pursuit can make driving difficult. Alleys may provide routes that are less exposed than main streets, but the sources do not identify guaranteed hiding locations or a fixed path. Use the example to choose a different movement pattern when the car is repeatedly keeping you in the pursuit.

What police recognition means for Jason and Lucia

The reported details—faces, clothing, vehicle and whether the pair is together—create several combinations police may use to maintain perception. A vehicle change addresses only one of those details. Separating the characters addresses another. Neither statement proves that faces or clothes can be permanently forgotten, and the available reporting does not say that a complete outfit change or altered hairstyle definitely ends pursuit.

Plan around the evidence that is available: reduce contact, avoid continuing to present the same recognizable combination and use a different route or movement mode when the current one is failing. Do not build a strategy around unconfirmed claims about cameras, witness phone calls, disguise timers or appearance-change cooldowns.

Three practical pursuit scenarios

A known car is keeping officers close

If the current vehicle is the obvious link between you and the reported crime, look for a safe chance to change it rather than relying on acceleration alone. The benefit Nelson describes is that police no longer match the new vehicle to the old recognition. Keep expectations limited: the characters’ faces, clothes and relationship status can remain recognizable, and the wanted state may continue while officers search.

Jason and Lucia are being treated as one target

When both characters are together, separating them is a supported option because Nelson says police recognize whether they are together and that splitting up can lower police perception. The report does not state a required distance, a timing window or whether one character can complete the escape for both. Treat separation as a way to reduce the visible combination, not as a guaranteed team-wide reset.

A three-star pursuit is trapped in the city

Nelson’s specific comparison favors leaving the vehicle and using alleys on foot when driving becomes difficult in a city chase at three stars. This is the clearest tactic comparison currently reported. It does not mean every three-star encounter, neighborhood or mission has the same geometry, nor does it prove that alleys always hide a character successfully. It means changing movement mode can be preferable when roads repeatedly expose the known car.

Wanted levels in missions and the open world

Rockstar says it wants mission systems to behave consistently with open-world systems. In a separate GamesRadar+ report on Nelson’s IGN interview, he said: “Anything where a mission can become systemic and it’s a wanted level or robbery system – we try to make it so that it doesn’t feel inconsistent with how the game works in the open world.” The statement is reported here.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That design goal does not reveal exact mission escape rules. A scripted objective may still impose conditions that an ordinary free-roam encounter does not, and no public source here specifies whether a particular mission permits switching cars, splitting the characters or abandoning a pursuit. Apply the general recognition principle, then follow the objective and on-screen instructions for that mission.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming six stars have a published escalation chart. Six is the reported count; individual star behaviors have not been documented in the available sources.
  • Treating a car swap as an instant reset. The reported benefit is reduced vehicle recognition, not guaranteed clearance.
  • Remaining together automatically. If police recognize whether Jason and Lucia are together, separation can be a useful option.
  • Driving indefinitely through a dense city. Nelson’s three-star example says alleys on foot are usually better when a city pursuit makes driving difficult.
  • Calling clothing or hair changes confirmed mechanics. Police recognition of clothing is reported, but no source establishes that changing clothes or hair definitely clears a wanted state.
  • Using an exact cooldown timer. No search duration or universal cooldown is published in the available material.
  • Confusing lost contact with a cleared wanted level. The reported white-to-red star change is an interpretation of the search state, not an official rulebook definition.

A compact checklist for each pursuit

  1. Has a witness seen the crime or has an alarm reported it?
  2. Are police still in direct contact, or are they searching?
  3. Do officers know the current vehicle?
  4. Are Jason and Lucia together in a way police can recognize?
  5. Can you change vehicles without exposing yourself during the switch?
  6. Is the city making continued driving harder than moving through alleys on foot?
  7. Are you treating a visual star change as a warning to remain cautious rather than as proof of clearance?

What remains unknown before release

Rockstar’s official GTA VI page confirms the platforms and current November 19, 2026 release date, but it does not publish a full wanted-system manual. The public information available before release does not establish:

  • what each of the six stars does;
  • how long an active search lasts;
  • the exact conditions that clear a wanted level;
  • whether both characters always share one wanted state;
  • how clothing or facial recognition changes over time;
  • which hiding places are reliable; or
  • whether every mission allows the same escape choices as free roam.

Those gaps matter because a tactic can be sensible without being guaranteed. Until the released game or an official system explanation supplies the missing details, describe vehicle changes, separation and alley travel as context-dependent ways to reduce recognition and contact—not as exploits or universal resets.

Bottom line

GTA 6’s reported wanted system goes up to six stars and may track faces, clothing, vehicles and whether Jason and Lucia are together. When a crime has been witnessed or an alarm has reported it, break contact, change the recognized vehicle when safe, consider splitting the characters and, in a difficult three-star city chase, favor alleys on foot over assuming that more driving will solve the pursuit. Exact star behaviors, search times and clearance rules remain unconfirmed until Rockstar provides more information or the game releases.

How do you lose the cops in GTA 6?

The reported guidance is to break direct contact, change vehicles when safe, consider splitting Jason and Lucia, and use alleys on foot when a difficult city pursuit makes driving ineffective. None of these steps is confirmed as an automatic wanted-level reset.

Can you change cars to escape the police in GTA 6?

Changing vehicles can lower police perception because officers may no longer match the replacement car to the one they recognized. It does not necessarily erase recognition of faces or clothing or immediately clear the wanted state.

Do clothes and faces affect police recognition?

Nelson’s comments, as reported by GamesRadar+, say police can recognize clothing and faces as well as the vehicle. The reports do not confirm that changing clothes, hair or appearance definitely ends a search.

Can Jason and Lucia split up to reduce a wanted level?

Yes, separation is described as a way to lower police perception when officers recognize that the characters are together. The required distance, duration and effect on each character remain unknown.

What do white and red wanted stars mean?

GamesRadar+ describes stars changing from white to red after direct contact is broken and interprets that as police searching rather than actively pursuing. That color meaning is not an officially documented rule, so continue acting cautiously.

Are GTA 6 mission pursuits identical to free-roam pursuits?

Rockstar says it aims for wanted and robbery systems in missions to feel consistent with the open world. Individual missions may still impose their own objectives or restrictions, and exact escape rules have not been published.

What platforms and release date are confirmed for GTA 6?

The Bottom Line

GTA 6’s reported six-star system can recognize faces, clothing, vehicles and whether Jason and Lucia are together. Break contact, change cars when safe, split up when useful and favor alleys on foot in the reported difficult three-star city pursuit—but treat every tactic as situational until Rockstar publishes exact rules.
