In AI: The Somnium Files, investigate people and objects for clues, then use those clues and your decisions to navigate dream sequences called Somnium. The most important rule for Somnium is the six-minute limit: every action uses time, and the choices you make can affect which story route opens. This spoiler-aware guide covers the core systems first; the final section flags where route and completion topics become spoilers.
How investigations work
Investigation scenes are about gathering evidence by talking to people and examining objects. Aiba, the artificial eye in Date’s left eye socket, adds three vision modes—Zoom, Thermo and X-ray—that can help you examine a scene. Evidence collected from witnesses and locations is used to answer investigation prompts. Some interactive scenes also require the right button input to change what happens.
For a first playthrough, work methodically: speak with the people present, inspect objects, and use Aiba’s available vision modes when examining a scene. The official overview explains these tools, but does not specify which mode reveals a particular clue in each scene, so treat them as investigative options rather than guaranteed answers. Somnium takes place inside a subject’s dream. You must find clues and unlock Mental Locks that obstruct access to memories. The Psyncer has six minutes in the dream, and actions consume time. Spike Chunsoft also notes that an incorrect choice may provide a hint; it does not say that every incorrect choice will do so. Spike Chunsoft’s Somnium system overview

- Keep the timer in view. The six-minute limit makes the remaining time part of every decision.
- Focus on the current obstacle. Choosing actions that address what is blocking progress is a practical way to use the limited time.
- Consider optional interactions against the clock. An action has a time cost, so weigh exploration against the time left to reach a Mental Lock or clue.
- Use hints as feedback when they appear. If an incorrect choice produces a hint, use that information to refine your next choice.
The last three points are decision-making advice drawn from the stated timer and hint rules, not guaranteed solutions for individual Somnium sequences.
What to expect from routes and replay
Somnium results can change the story route. Spike Chunsoft states that “The story route branches differently based on the results of the Somnium.” At a divergence point, the game allows you to redo the Somnium to advance on another route. If you want to see a different outcome, use that branch point rather than restarting and replaying blindly from the beginning. Official Somnium system details

Platforms and editions
The original AI: The Somnium Files was released in 2019. Spike Chunsoft lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Windows 10 and Steam among its platforms. Its product page links to standard and Special Agent editions for PS4 and Switch. Store listings, stock and edition contents can change, so check the relevant retailer for current details.
