On PlayStation 5, manage Skyrim mods through the in-game Creations menu. From Skyrim Special Edition’s main screen, choose Play, open Creations, sign in to Bethesda.net when prompted, and use Download, Library, and Load Order to install and control content. Disable a Creation before deleting it when you are diagnosing a crash or visual problem; deletion removes the installed files, while disabling leaves the item available for reactivation.
Bethesda combined the former Mods and Creation Club areas into one Creations menu in a December 2023 update. The labels may therefore differ from older guides, but the workflow below applies to Skyrim Special Edition on PS5.
What “mods” and “Creations” mean in Skyrim on PS5
Bethesda now uses Creations as the umbrella term for the downloadable content previously separated into Mods and Creation Club. Skyrim Special Edition is the edition identified by Bethesda for this in-game menu. You do not need a separate mod manager, computer, or accessory for the basic install, disable, delete, and load-order tasks described here.

The game’s Creations menu is the authoritative place to manage what is installed on your console. Bethesda also provides a web area for browsing Skyrim Creations, but a Creation must still be managed through the game when you need to download it, change its status, or inspect the load order. Browsing on the website can be useful for reading descriptions before you sit down at the console; it does not replace the in-game Library and Load Order screens.

What you need
The documented workflow requires The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition on PS5 and a Bethesda.net account linked to the console account used in the game. No separate paid manager, repair utility, cable, or other accessory is necessary for these tasks. Bethesda’s support pages do not establish a current PS5-specific Creation storage capacity, so avoid treating figures from PC or Xbox discussions as a PS5 specification.
Install a Skyrim Creation on PS5
- Start The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition and select Play from the main menu.
- Select Creations.
- Sign in to your Bethesda.net account if Skyrim asks you to do so. The console account must be linked to the Bethesda.net account that owns or follows the content.
- Browse or search for a Creation, open its detail page, and choose Download.
- After downloading, open Load Order if the item’s position needs checking. Some Creations have dependencies or author instructions that make placement important.
A downloaded item is not automatically a reason to change every other entry. Read the item’s own description, note any required files, and make the smallest change necessary. If you are rebuilding a setup, download one item or a small related group, test it, and keep a note of what you added. That makes it possible to identify the last change if a crash or visual fault appears.
Bethesda’s PS5 startup guidance warns that downloading more than 10 new Creations at one time is at risk. This is a support warning, not a published storage limit and not a guarantee that 10 or fewer downloads will always work. Treat it as a reason to stage large changes rather than as a precise technical ceiling.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBefore you download
- Read the Creation’s description for required files, compatibility notes, and instructions about starting a new game or using an existing save.
- Check the author’s update date when it is shown. A game update can leave an older Creation incompatible until its creator updates it.
- Install one or a few related items at a time. If a problem appears, you can identify the change instead of troubleshooting a large, unknown batch.
- Keep a current save from before the change. A save that has already recorded modded content may not behave the same way after that content is removed.
- Record the order in which you add items. A short written list gives you a rollback plan if you later need to disable the newest additions.
Find, disable, or delete installed Creations
Open Creations from the main menu, enter Library, select the item, and choose the action you need. Bethesda describes disabling as reversible and deleting as removal of the installed Creation. The distinction matters when you are trying to isolate a fault: disabling preserves the item for a later test, while deleting means you will need to download it again if you change your mind.
| Action | What it does | Best use | What to expect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disable | Turns the Creation off while retaining it in your installed content. | First diagnostic step for crashes, missing textures, broken quests, or unexpected behavior. | You can return to Library or Load Order and re-enable it later. |
| Delete | Removes the installed Creation from the console. | Permanent removal, freeing the item from your active installation or eliminating a problem item you no longer want. | You must download it again if you later decide to use it. |
Safe troubleshooting sequence
- Save and exit Skyrim if possible.
- Open Creations > Library and select the suspected item.
- Choose Disable, then restart the game and test the same activity.
- If the issue remains and the Creation is not needed, return to Library and choose Delete.
- Test with an original, unmodified save when possible. Bethesda’s support guidance describes using Select Character in the Load menu to choose the player’s original save when returning to a save without Creations.
Do not treat disabling as a way to repair every save. A save may already contain references to items supplied by a Creation. If a quest, object, or character disappears after removal, restore a save from before that Creation was installed or activated. Keep the original save separate from experimental saves so you always have a clean comparison point.
Understand and check the load order
Open Creations > Load Order to review the sequence of enabled files. Bethesda identifies three file groups in this order:
| Group | File extension | Bethesda’s placement description |
|---|---|---|
| Master files | ESM | At the very top of the load order. |
| Light master files | ESL | After ESM files and still within the top group. |
| Creation/plugin files | ESP | After the ESM and ESL groups. |
ESM and ESL files can be rearranged among themselves where the menu permits, but Bethesda says they cannot be removed from the top group. ESP files occupy the later group. This describes the file-type structure, not a universal solution for every combination of Creations: follow the individual item’s instructions rather than copying a generic list from an unrelated platform.
When Load Order will not save
Bethesda lists duplicate filenames and outdated Creations as causes of problems when saving a load order or deleting and enabling items. If the menu refuses to save:
Rank #2
- Look for two entries that use the same filename or otherwise appear duplicated.
- Disable the duplicate or recently added item, then try saving again.
- Check whether each installed Creation has an available update and install current versions.
- Make a small change, save, and test the game before making another change.
- If the menu still cannot save, continue with the console troubleshooting sequence below rather than repeatedly editing a corrupted arrangement.
Do not assume that moving an entry repeatedly will solve a duplicate-file problem. First remove ambiguity by disabling the newest or duplicated entry, then make one controlled test. If the problem returns after re-enabling a specific item, leave that item disabled while you test the rest of the setup.
If the Creations menu is missing
Bethesda states that the Mods and Creation Club menus were combined into the unified Creations menu in December 2023. Therefore, an older guide telling you to look for separate Mods or Creation Club entries is out of date. Bethesda Support describes this change directly: “In an update in December 2023, the Mods and Creation Club menus were combined into a unified Creations Menu.”
- Confirm that you launched Skyrim Special Edition, not a different Skyrim installation or a title that does not include the documented menu.
- Check that the PS5 is signed in to the Bethesda.net account linked to the game.
- Close Skyrim completely and start it again after a game update.
- Check for a pending Skyrim update. Bethesda notes that a recent update can make Creations incompatible until their creators release updated versions.
If the menu remains absent after those checks, use Bethesda’s account-linking and PlayStation troubleshooting steps before changing or deleting saves. A missing menu is not evidence that you should erase saved data.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If a subscribed or downloaded Creation does not appear
A subscription or prior download does not guarantee that the item will remain visible. Bethesda recommends checking availability on Bethesda.net, verifying the account linked to the console, and removing and downloading the Creation again.
- Confirm that the Creation’s listing still exists and has not been removed from Bethesda.net.
- Verify that the PS5 is linked to the same Bethesda.net account used when the item was obtained.
- In Skyrim, open Creations > Library and remove the missing or stalled item if it is listed.
- Close and relaunch Skyrim, then download the item again.
- Check Load Order to make sure the Creation is enabled and placed in the appropriate file group.
If the item was updated or withdrawn, a missing entry may be an availability issue rather than a PS5 installation failure. The official guidance does not establish a complete list of platform restrictions or a current PS5-specific Creation storage capacity, so do not infer either from PC or Xbox instructions. If the listing is gone, repeatedly restarting the console cannot restore it; first resolve the account or availability question.
Recover from crashes, freezes, or a stuck loading screen
Use an escalating approach. Start with the least destructive action and move upward only if the problem persists. This separates a single bad Creation from a broader game-installation problem and avoids deleting content before you know it is responsible.
1. Close and restart Skyrim
Exit the game from the PS5 home screen, close the application, and launch it again. This clears a temporary session problem without changing installed Creations or saves. Test the same menu or save that failed so you can tell whether the restart changed anything.

2. Disable the suspected Creation
Open Creations > Library, select the most recently installed or most clearly related item, and choose Disable. Test again before deleting anything. If the game works, re-enable other items one at a time to isolate a conflict. If the fault remains, disable the next likely recent addition instead of changing the entire order at once.

3. Delete the problem item
If disabling does not resolve the issue and the item is not required, delete it from Library. Use a save from before the Creation was introduced when testing, because removing an active quest, object, or script from a later save can produce additional problems. Keep the disabled or deleted item noted so you can identify it if the same symptom returns after a later download.
4. Power-cycle the PS5
Close Skyrim, turn the console off completely rather than leaving it in Rest Mode, wait briefly, and start it again. Bethesda includes a power cycle in its PlayStation troubleshooting sequence. After the restart, test the base game or an original save before reactivating a large group of Creations.
5. Reinstall Skyrim
Bethesda’s general PlayStation guidance escalates to uninstalling and reinstalling Skyrim when the earlier steps fail. Its separate console-startup guidance specifically tells PS5 players whose game is stuck loading after activating many Creations to uninstall and reinstall the whole game.

Reinstalling removes the game installation, not the saved-data files, according to Bethesda’s support guidance. Nevertheless, back up the correct saves through the PS5 saved-data settings before uninstalling if you are concerned about losing progress. Confirm the backup has completed and belongs to the account and game version you intend to restore. Reinstalling should be an escalation, not the first response to one troublesome item.
Rebuild a stable setup after reinstalling
- Install Skyrim Special Edition and apply its available updates.
- Start the game once with no Creations enabled to confirm that the base installation reaches the main menu and loads an original save.
- Download only a small group of Creations.
- Review Library and Load Order, then launch the game and test.
- Repeat in small groups, keeping a written note of what was added and in which order.
- When a problem returns, disable the newest group first and narrow the cause item by item.
This method takes longer than downloading everything in one session, but it gives you a known-good checkpoint and a clear rollback path. It also makes Bethesda’s more-than-10-download warning easier to respect because you are deliberately adding content in stages rather than creating one large unknown batch.
Practical rules for managing Creations on PS5
- Keep the original save: Maintain at least one save created before activating Creations so you can test the unmodified game.
- Change one variable: Add, remove, or reorder a small number of items before testing.
- Read dependencies: If a Creation requires another file, install the required item first and follow the author’s stated order.
- Prefer disabling for diagnosis: It is reversible and lets you determine whether the item is involved before removing it.
- Watch for duplicates: Duplicate filenames can block saving, enabling, or deleting operations.
- Keep content current: A Skyrim update may require creators to update their Creations.
- Respect the batch warning: Bethesda flags more than 10 new downloads at once as at risk; treat that as caution, not a guaranteed limit.
- Do not assume PC rules apply: The documented PS5 workflow does not establish every PC or Xbox restriction, capacity figure, or compatibility rule.
- Use the game menu for management: The website is useful for browsing, but Library, Download, Disable, Delete, and Load Order actions are handled in Skyrim on the console.
- Keep a change log: Note the Creation name, whether it is enabled, and the point at which a symptom appeared. This turns trial and error into a controlled rollback.
Quick decision guide
| Symptom | First action | Next escalation |
|---|---|---|
| You want to test whether one Creation causes a problem. | Disable it in Library. | Delete it and test an earlier save if necessary. |
| You want the Creation gone permanently. | Delete it in Library. | Download it again only if you later change your mind. |
| Load Order will not save. | Check duplicate filenames and updates. | Disable recent additions, then restart and retry. |
| The Creations menu is missing. | Check the December 2023 unified-menu layout, account link, and game update. | Follow Bethesda’s PlayStation troubleshooting sequence. |
| A subscribed Creation is absent. | Check Bethesda.net availability and the linked account. | Remove and download it again. |
| PS5 remains stuck loading after many Creations were activated. | Close the game and disable recent Creations. | Bethesda specifically recommends uninstalling and reinstalling Skyrim if loading remains stuck. |
Frequently Asked Questions
Where are Skyrim mods on PS5 now?
In Skyrim Special Edition, open Play and then Creations. Bethesda combined the former Mods and Creation Club menus into this unified menu in December 2023. Use Library for installed items and Load Order for enabled files.
How do I install a Skyrim Creation on PS5?
Launch Skyrim Special Edition, choose Play > Creations, sign in to Bethesda.net if prompted, select the Creation, and choose Download. Review Load Order afterward if the item’s description gives placement instructions.
How do I uninstall a Creation?
Open Creations > Library, select the item, and choose Delete. If you are only testing whether it causes a crash or visual problem, choose Disable first because disabling is reversible.

Why can’t I save my Creations load order?
Bethesda identifies duplicate filenames and outdated Creations as possible causes. Look for duplicate entries, disable the newest or duplicated item, update installed Creations, and try a small change again. If the problem continues, restart the console and follow the broader troubleshooting sequence.
Why are my Creations or mods not appearing on PS5?
Check that the Creation still exists on Bethesda.net and that the PS5 is linked to the Bethesda.net account used in Skyrim. If it is listed but stalled or missing, remove it, restart Skyrim, and download it again. A withdrawn listing or an incompatible post-update item may not be recoverable until the creator updates it.
Will disabling a Creation damage my save?
Disabling is the cautious first diagnostic action, but it cannot guarantee that every save will remain unaffected. If a save already contains a quest, object, or other reference supplied by the Creation, test an original save from before the item was activated. Bethesda describes selecting the original save through Select Character in the Load menu.
How many Creations can I download at once on PS5?
Bethesda warns that downloading more than 10 new Creations at one time is at risk. It is not a formal storage limit or a guarantee that 10 or fewer items are safe. Download in small groups and test between groups.
Do I need a separate mod manager or a PC?
No separate manager, computer, accessory, or repair service is needed for the documented PS5 workflow. Skyrim Special Edition’s in-game Creations menu handles downloading, Library management, disabling, deleting, and Load Order review.
What should I do if Skyrim is stuck loading after activating many Creations?
Close and restart Skyrim, disable recent or suspected Creations, and power-cycle the PS5. Bethesda’s specific PS5 startup guidance says to uninstall and reinstall Skyrim if the game remains stuck loading after many Creations were activated. Back up the correct saved data before uninstalling if you are concerned about progress.
The Bottom Line
Use Skyrim Special Edition’s Creations menu as your control center: download through Play > Creations, manage installed items in Library, inspect ordering by ESM, ESL, and ESP groups, and disable before deleting when troubleshooting. Check Bethesda.net availability and account linking for missing content, add items in small batches, and escalate from restart to power cycle to reinstall only when necessary. Bethesda’s warning about more than 10 new downloads at once is cautionary, not a PS5 capacity limit.
