Manage Nifty futures risk by deciding the maximum rupee loss you can accept before entering, identifying the price that invalidates the trade, sizing the position from that exit distance and the current contract lot size, and keeping separate cash for margin changes and mark-to-market losses. Exchange margin is collateral calculated under a risk-based clearing system; it is not your personal loss limit and does not guarantee that a stop will cap the loss.

What makes Nifty futures risky?

A Nifty futures contract gives directional exposure to the Nifty 50 index. The payoff is linear: a move against a long position creates a loss, while a move against a short position also creates a loss. The rupee effect depends on the index-price change and the contract’s permitted lot size.

Unlike buying an index fund with cash, futures require only a portion of the contract’s notional value as margin. That leverage means a relatively small index move can produce a large percentage change in the money posted with your broker. It also means the amount shown as available margin can make a position look affordable even when its planned loss is too large for your finances.

Risk planning therefore starts with the trade idea and an acceptable rupee loss, not with the maximum number of lots a broker permits.

Check the live contract before calculating anything

Contract parameters can change. Before every new position, verify the exact expiry month, permitted lot size, tick size and other specifications in the current NSE contract files, then check your broker’s live margin display. Do not copy a lot size or margin figure from an old article.

Item Published framework What you must verify now
Underlying NIFTY 50 index That the order is for the intended Nifty futures contract and month
Contract cycle NSE lists three consecutive monthly index-futures contracts; the Nifty 50 F&O framework describes a maximum three-month cycle Which near-, mid- or far-month contract is currently available
Expiry Last Tuesday of the expiry month, moved to the previous trading day if that Tuesday is a trading holiday The exact expiry date and the exchange calendar for your contract
Lot size NSE says the permitted lot size may be stipulated by the exchange from time to time; the published framework says contract value at introduction may not be below Rs. 15 lakh The current lot size in the live contract file; the Rs. 15 lakh figure is not today’s guaranteed notional value
Index tick steps 0.05 from 0 to 15,000; 0.10 above 15,000 through 30,000; 0.20 above 30,000, on the specification page updated 11 August 2026 The current specification and how your order price is rounded

The tick-size thresholds describe permitted index-price increments, not a risk limit. Your rupee value per tick is determined by the current lot size, so it must be checked together with the price step.

Set a rupee loss budget before placing the order

Choose the amount you could lose on this trade without compromising essential expenses, debt payments, emergency reserves or other obligations. No universal percentage of capital is established here as a suitable rule for every trader. A sensible budget depends on income stability, total assets, existing positions, liquidity and the possibility of several losses in succession.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Write the budget down before looking at how many lots the broker will allow. Treat it as a planning ceiling, not as a target to use fully. If one lot can exceed the budget at the planned exit, the trade is too large under that plan; reducing the stop distance merely to make the arithmetic fit changes the trade’s premise and is not genuine risk control.

Define the invalidation level and estimate loss per lot

An invalidation level is the price at which the reason for the trade is no longer valid. It may be above the entry for a short position or below the entry for a long position. Decide it from the market structure or thesis before entering, and record whether the position will be closed intraday or carried overnight.

For a long position, the planned loss per lot before charges and execution differences is approximately:

(Entry price − planned exit price) × current lot size

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a short position, use:

(planned exit price − entry price) × current lot size

Using the absolute price difference covers both directions:

planned loss per lot ≈ |E − X| × L

Here, E is entry, X is the planned exit and L is the current permitted lot size. Add a realistic allowance for brokerage, exchange charges, taxes and other applicable costs when you set the budget, even though those amounts are not included in the basic formula.

Calculate the number of lots

Once the loss per lot is known, divide the loss budget by that amount and round down to a whole number:

lots = floor(loss budget ÷ (|E − X| × L))

This is a planning aid, not an NSE or SEBI-mandated formula and not a recommendation to trade. If the result is zero, stand aside, use a smaller-risk instrument if appropriate, or redesign the trade for a genuinely different thesis rather than forcing the numbers.

Hypothetical calculation

Assume, purely for illustration, an entry at 24,000, an invalidation exit at 23,850 and a loss budget of Rs. 30,000. The price distance is 150 index points. With the current lot size represented by L, the planned loss per lot is 150 × L, and the permitted lot count under this simplified plan is:

floor(30,000 ÷ (150 × L))

The prices, budget and contract input in this example are hypothetical. It does not establish a current Nifty price or lot size. The calculation excludes margin changes, brokerage and statutory charges, slippage, gaps and any change in contract inputs. Those factors can make the realized loss larger or smaller than the planned figure.

Understand what margin does—and does not—mean

NSE Clearing describes online SPAN-based margining as a central part of its risk-containment system. Initial margin is collected upfront. The published methodology states that initial-margin requirements are based on 99% value at risk over a one-day horizon, with a two-day horizon for futures under the page’s stated next-day mark-to-market collection condition. The page also lists an extreme-loss margin of 2% of notional value for index derivatives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those are clearing-framework details, not a fixed amount that every client will pay and not a personal risk percentage. A 99% value-at-risk methodology does not mean your loss is capped at 1%, and a 2% extreme-loss component does not mean the maximum loss is 2% of notional. Volatility, contract data, settlement conditions, portfolio offsets and other inputs can change the requirement. Your broker may also apply its own policies and collect additional funds.

Term What it means for your decision
Initial margin Collateral required before the position is accepted under the current risk model
Mark-to-market (MTM) Daily or otherwise applicable settlement of gains and losses that can require cash even if you have not closed the contract
Extreme-loss margin A clearing component; it is not a suggested amount of personal trade risk
Available margin The funds the broker currently recognises as usable; it is not the same as an affordable maximum loss

Keep a liquidity reserve outside the planned loss budget. A position can be correctly sized for its intended stop and still create a funding problem if the exchange raises margin, the broker changes its requirement, or an adverse MTM debit arrives before you can exit.

Stops are instructions, not guaranteed prices

A stop defines the price at which you intend to leave, but it does not guarantee that every unit will execute there. A fast market, an overnight gap, a trading halt, a thin order book or a sudden repricing can produce an execution away from the trigger. The cited sources do not provide a Nifty-specific slippage or gap estimate, so no fixed maximum loss can be promised from a stop alone.

Before entry, decide whether your order type is a stop-market or stop-limit order and understand the trade-off. A stop-market order prioritises execution but may fill at a worse price. A stop-limit order controls the worst acceptable price but may not fill, leaving the position exposed. Confirm the exact labels and trigger rules in your trading platform because implementations differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Place the protective order immediately after the entry is confirmed, if that is part of your plan.
  • Do not widen the stop simply to avoid taking a planned loss; recalculate the lot count if the invalidation level changes.
  • Know how the platform behaves if the market opens beyond the trigger or if the contract approaches expiry.
  • Monitor connectivity and order status; an assumed stop that was rejected, cancelled or partially filled is not protection.

Plan for expiry and rollover

Nifty futures expire on the last Tuesday of the expiry month, moving to the previous trading day when that Tuesday is a trading holiday under the published NSE framework. Near-, mid- and far-month contracts can trade at the same time, but they are separate contracts with different prices, liquidity and time remaining.

If you intend to hold beyond expiry, decide in advance whether you will close the expiring contract and open the next one. Check the next contract’s current lot size, margin, spread and expiry rather than assuming the terms are identical. A rollover introduces two orders and execution risk; it also changes the price reference used to judge profit or loss.

Compare risk plans using the same measures

When deciding between two setups or contract months, compare them on identical axes instead of choosing the one with the lower displayed margin.

Measure Questions to ask
Planned rupee loss What is the loss at the invalidation level for the proposed lot count?
Notional exposure What is the current index level multiplied by the verified lot size and number of lots?
Margin and liquidity What does the broker require now, and how much cash remains for a margin increase or MTM debit?
Expiry and rollover How soon does the contract expire, and will holding it require a separate rollover decision?
Execution assumptions Could a gap, fast move or order-type limitation make the realized exit differ from the planned exit?

There is no evidence here that one contract month or one risk plan produces superior returns. The comparison is about exposure, liquidity and operational risk, not a ranking of strategies.

Account for overnight and portfolio risks

Overnight positions

An overnight position can encounter news, global-market moves or a gap before a stop can execute. If your plan assumes an intraday exit, do not carry the position after the session without recalculating the possible loss and confirming the additional margin and liquidity requirements.

Multiple positions

Calculate combined exposure, not just the risk of each ticket in isolation. Two trades that appear separate may both lose when the Nifty falls. Sum their adverse scenarios, include correlated positions and reserve funds for simultaneous MTM demands.

Short positions

A short futures position has the same linear, directional nature as a long position: a rise in the Nifty creates a loss. The position-sizing process is unchanged, but the invalidation level is above entry and the exit calculation uses that direction.

Common risk-control mistakes and fixes

  • Using broker margin as the stop-loss budget: Margin is collateral, not a maximum loss. Recalculate from entry, invalidation and current lot size.
  • Carrying an old lot size into a new trade: Open the current NSE contract file and verify the permitted lot before placing the order.
  • Prescribing a universal percentage of capital: No single percentage fits every financial situation. Set a rupee amount based on your circumstances and total exposure.
  • Ignoring MTM cash needs: Keep a separate liquid reserve and check the broker’s current requirement before entry.
  • Assuming a stop guarantees the fill: Treat the stop as an intended exit and allow for gaps, slippage and non-execution.
  • Changing the stop without changing size: A wider invalidation distance increases loss per lot. Recalculate and round down again.
  • Holding through expiry by accident: Record the expiry date and set a rollover or closure decision before the final trading sessions.
  • Confusing a historical explanation with current terms: The SEBI-hosted investor disclosure is useful for explaining linear futures payoffs, but its generic margin examples should not be presented as current Nifty conditions.

A practical pre-trade checklist

  1. Confirm the exact Nifty futures symbol, expiry month and current lot size from the latest NSE contract information.
  2. Check the current tick specification and the broker’s live initial and other applicable margin.
  3. State the trade direction, entry condition and invalidation price.
  4. Choose a rupee loss budget that fits your broader finances and existing positions.
  5. Compute |E − X| × L, include an allowance for trading costs, and round the lot count down.
  6. Decide whether the position is intraday or overnight and account for gap and execution risk.
  7. Confirm that a separate cash buffer remains for margin changes and MTM debits.
  8. Set the protective order and verify that it is accepted, active and attached to the intended contract.
  9. Record the plan, including the expiry date and what would require a manual review.

Review execution after the trade

A journal can record the thesis, entry, invalidation level, planned lots, margin check, actual exit, costs, slippage and whether you followed the plan. Use the record to identify process errors—such as an unverified lot size, an omitted liquidity buffer or a changed stop—not to assume that journaling itself improves returns. If the trade exceeded the planned risk, document whether the cause was a gap, partial fill, order failure, manual decision or incorrect calculation.

What the published figures mean in context

NSE Clearing’s 99% value-at-risk statement and 2% index-derivatives extreme-loss component describe how a clearing margin is built at the exchange level. NSE’s Rs. 15 lakh statement describes the minimum contract value at introduction in its published Nifty framework. Neither figure tells you the exact cash required for a particular client order today. Live contract files and the broker’s current margin display are the appropriate references immediately before trading.
