A game’s 100-hour playtime does not reveal its installation size, so do not choose storage capacity from the length of the campaign. On your PS5, first check the actual free space at Settings > Storage. Remove games you can redownload, use a game’s Customize option when it offers removable add-ons or completed content, and then decide whether you need a compatible M.2 SSD (for games you want to launch directly) or USB extended storage (for games you are willing to move back before playing). Keep saved data separate: cloud saves require PlayStation Plus and are not a replacement for game storage.
What the “100-hour” description does—and does not—tell you
“100-hour” describes expected play time, not a storage specification. Open-world games can have very different install sizes, and the title in this question is not identified. There is therefore no defensible game-specific number of gigabytes or single “correct” drive capacity to prescribe. Read the game’s install-size figure on its store page, disc packaging, or download screen, then compare that number with the free space shown on your own console.
Plan for more than the headline install number. A digital download may need temporary working space while the PS5 downloads, verifies, and installs it. Updates and downloadable add-ons can also increase the footprint. Sony’s storage screen is the authoritative starting point for your console’s current situation because it separates space used by games, media, and saved data. See Sony’s PS5 storage-management guide for the current menu descriptions.

1. Read the actual free-space figure
- Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
- Select Storage.
- Review Console Storage and note the available space, plus the categories consuming it.
Write down the free-space number before making changes. Recheck it after each large deletion or move so you can see which action actually created room. The console’s total capacity is not the same as usable free space: system software and reserved data occupy part of it.

2. Inspect large games and applications
- From Settings > Storage, open Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Sort or review the largest entries first.
- Select a game or application you no longer need installed and choose Delete.
Deleting an installed game removes its local program files, not your ownership. Purchased games can be downloaded again from your Game Library when you want them. You will need to download updates again, and a disc game still requires its disc for licensing, but deletion is reversible through normal redownloading. Sony documents this workflow in its storage-space instructions.
3. Look for Customize before removing an entire game
Some games show a Customize control in the Games and Apps list. When present, it may let you remove language packs, optional add-ons, or completed portions while retaining the content you still use. The controls are game-specific: not every title exposes them, and the exact removable items vary. Open Customize, read each item’s description, and remove only content you can obtain again or no longer need. If no Customize control appears, the PS5 does not provide that selective-removal option for that installation.
4. Protect saves before housekeeping
Deleting a game is different from deleting saved data. Check your saved-data settings before choosing any item that mentions saves. PlayStation Plus members can upload PS5 and PS4 saved data to cloud storage; the subscription is required. Sony’s storage guide lists cloud handling for both generations and USB copying for PS4 saves, but it does not list ordinary USB backup as the same option for PS5 saved data. The current rules are in the official storage guide.

| Option | Can a PS5 game launch directly from it? | Best use | Limits and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delete or customize existing installations | Not applicable | Fastest way to create space without buying hardware | Deleted purchases can be redownloaded; Customize is available only in games that support it. |
| Compatible M.2 SSD | Yes | Keep the RPG and other PS5 games installed and ready to launch | It must meet Sony’s current performance, physical-size, and heat-dissipation requirements. Sony lists up to 8 TB for compatible M.2 expansion. |
| USB extended-storage drive | No for PS5 games | Archive games you are not currently playing and move them back later | PS5 games must be copied to console storage or an M.2 SSD before they can run. The drive must meet Sony’s USB requirements and cannot be connected through a hub. |
| PlayStation Plus cloud storage | No; it stores saves, not installations | Protect or synchronize saved progress | A PlayStation Plus subscription is required; cloud space does not make room for the game itself. |
The direct-play requirement usually decides the purchase. If you want the RPG available alongside several other PS5 games, use an M.2 SSD. If you are comfortable waiting for a copy operation whenever you switch games, USB extended storage can hold the inactive installations. If you only need room today, delete or customize existing content first.
Use an M.2 SSD when the RPG must stay playable
What an M.2 expansion does
A compatible M.2 SSD installed in the PS5 acts as additional internal-style storage. Sony allows PS5 games to be downloaded to it, moved to it, and launched from it. That makes it the expansion route for a large RPG that you want ready to play without copying it back from another drive. Sony’s storage-solutions page lists a maximum compatible M.2 expansion capacity of 8 TB.
Verify compatibility before buying
Do not treat any NVMe drive as automatically suitable. Sony’s requirements include the correct M.2 form factor and interface, adequate sequential-read performance, physical clearance, and effective heat dissipation. The exact figures and supported models can change, so check the live M.2 installation guide and the storage-solutions page immediately before purchase. A heatsink or other heat-dissipation structure may be required for the drive to operate within the console’s limits. Sony also lists a #1 Phillips or cross-head screwdriver among the installation tools.
Capacity should be based on your measured need: the RPG’s displayed install size, the other PS5 titles you want permanently available, expected updates, and a buffer for normal downloads. Since the RPG is unnamed, its size cannot be calculated here. Buying the largest drive listed by Sony is not automatically the best choice if you do not need that capacity.

Set the installation destination
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Choose Installation Location.
- Set PS5 games to the compatible M.2 SSD when you want new downloads to use it, or leave the console as the destination for internal storage.
Use the current on-screen labels because Sony can revise menu wording. The installation guide explains the supported destination settings and preparation sequence.
Move an existing game to the M.2 drive
- Open Game Library.
- Highlight the installed game and press the Options button on the controller.
- Select Move Games and Apps.
- Choose the M.2 SSD as the destination and confirm the move.
The move relocates the installation; it does not erase your ownership or save progress. Do not power off the console or disconnect storage while the operation is in progress. If the M.2 does not appear as a destination, shut down and reseat or reinstall it only according to Sony’s current hardware instructions rather than forcing the drive into the bay.
Use USB extended storage as an archive for PS5 games
What USB storage can and cannot do
USB extended storage is useful when you want to keep a large game without occupying the console’s internal space, but it is not a launch drive for PS5 software. A PS5 game stored there must be copied back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before you can play it. PS4 games, in contrast, can be played directly from USB extended storage. Sony explains this distinction in its USB extended-storage guide.

Current USB requirements
- SuperSpeed USB rated at 5 Gbps or faster.
- Capacity from 250 GB minimum to 8 TB maximum.
- Direct connection to the PS5; Sony says not to connect the drive through a USB hub.
- Compatibility is not guaranteed for every device, even when a drive’s headline capacity appears suitable.
These are Sony’s stated requirements, not a guarantee that every model will work. Check the current support page and the drive’s specifications before formatting it. Formatting erases the drive’s existing contents, so copy anything important elsewhere first.

Move the RPG off the console and back again
- Connect the compatible USB drive directly to the PS5.
- Format it as extended storage if the console requests this; formatting deletes all data on that drive.
- In Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, select the RPG and choose the move option, then select USB extended storage.
- When you want to play, open the same storage-management area, select the game, and move or copy it back to console storage or the M.2 SSD.
- Wait for the transfer to complete before launching the game.
Use the PS5’s safe-removal command before unplugging the drive. Disconnecting it during a transfer or while the console is using it can interrupt the installation and require a repair or reformat. The USB guide provides the current removal controls and warnings.
Keep saved data separate from game files
A game installation and its saves are separate categories. Removing a game to reclaim tens of gigabytes does not automatically remove its progress, but selecting saved-data entries for deletion can. Review the item name and category carefully before confirming.
PS5 and PS4 cloud saves
With PlayStation Plus, you can upload PS5 or PS4 saved data to cloud storage and download it on a compatible console. This protects progress and helps when moving between consoles, but it does not store the playable game. You still need the game installed on console or M.2 storage (or copied back from USB) to launch it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPS4 save copies on USB
Sony’s storage table also documents copying PS4 saved data to USB. That option is distinct from the PS5 save workflow described for cloud storage. Follow the current labels under saved-data settings and verify the console generation before choosing a backup method. The details are maintained in Sony’s storage-management guide.

A practical sequence for installing the RPG
Use this order to avoid buying hardware or deleting content unnecessarily.
- Find the game’s stated install size. Use the PlayStation Store listing, disc information, or the download screen for the exact edition and region. Do not infer it from the 100-hour description.
- Check free space. Go to Settings > Storage and record available console storage.
- Protect progress. Confirm that important saves are present locally and, if you have PlayStation Plus, uploaded to cloud storage.
- Remove low-priority installations. In Console Storage > Games and Apps, delete games you can redownload later. Use Customize where the game offers removable add-ons or completed sections.
- Try the installation. If the free-space figure comfortably exceeds the displayed game size and normal update headroom, install to the chosen destination.
- Add an M.2 SSD if direct launch is essential. Verify Sony’s current specifications, capacity limit, physical fit, and cooling requirements before purchasing or installing it.
- Use USB extended storage for inactive games. Move games you are not playing to a compliant USB drive, remembering that PS5 titles must be moved back before launch.
- Recheck storage. After installation or transfer, return to Settings > Storage and confirm that the expected space remains available for updates and future downloads.
How much capacity should you choose?
Start with a simple inventory instead of a generic recommendation. List the RPG’s displayed size, every PS5 game you want immediately playable, and the free space you want reserved for updates and new downloads. Add those figures and compare the total with the usable capacity shown by the PS5, not just the number printed on a drive’s box.
| Question | Why it changes the decision |
|---|---|
| What is the RPG’s actual install size? | The title and size are unknown here; a 100-hour campaign is not a storage measurement. |
| How many other PS5 games must remain launch-ready? | More always-installed games favor an M.2 SSD over repeatedly copying from USB. |
| How often will you switch games? | Frequent switching makes USB copy-back delays inconvenient; occasional play makes USB archiving practical. |
| Do you need PS4 compatibility too? | PS4 games can launch directly from USB extended storage, while PS5 games cannot. |
| Are you willing to install hardware? | An M.2 SSD requires compatibility checking and physical installation; deleting or using USB requires no internal-console installation. |
Sony states an 8 TB maximum for compatible M.2 expansion and an 8 TB maximum for USB extended storage, with USB starting at 250 GB and requiring SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later. Those limits describe supported storage devices, not the amount your unnamed RPG needs. Confirm current limits on Sony’s live pages because specifications and menu behavior can change.
Troubleshoot common storage problems
The PS5 says there is not enough space
- Return to Settings > Storage and check the free-space figure rather than relying on the drive’s advertised capacity.
- Delete another large, redownloadable game from Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Open Customize on eligible games and remove optional content.
- Check whether a pending update or download is also consuming space.
- If you need several PS5 games permanently installed, use a compatible M.2 SSD instead of relying on USB copy-back.
The game is on USB but will not start
This is expected for PS5 software. Move or copy the game from USB extended storage to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD, wait for the transfer to finish, and launch it from the destination. Only PS4 games are supported for direct play from USB extended storage.
The USB drive is not recognized
- Connect it directly to the PS5, not through a hub.
- Verify that it is SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or faster and between 250 GB and 8 TB.
- Check Sony’s current compatibility guidance; capacity alone does not guarantee support.
- If the console asks to format the drive, stop and copy off any files you need first because formatting erases its contents.
The M.2 SSD is unavailable as an installation destination
Confirm that the drive was installed according to Sony’s current M.2 instructions, meets the required specifications, and has effective heat dissipation. A drive that does not satisfy the physical or performance requirements may not be recognized or approved. Do not improvise with an incompatible enclosure or force the cover or drive into place.
A transfer appears stuck
Leave the console and drive connected while the progress indicator is active. Do not unplug USB storage or power off during a move. If the operation fails, restart the console normally and check the storage screen before attempting another transfer. Repeated failures indicate that you should recheck the drive’s compatibility and, for USB storage, whether it needs to be reformatted after backing up its contents.
Maintain enough room after installation
- Periodically review Settings > Storage instead of waiting for an install error.
- Remove completed games or optional content through Games and Apps and Customize where available.
- Keep games you are not playing on USB extended storage only if you accept the later copy-back step.
- Use the M.2 destination for PS5 games that you want to launch without moving them.
- Safely remove USB storage before disconnecting it.
- Check Sony’s current support pages before buying a drive because requirements, compatibility lists, and menu labels can change.
Bottom line
Make the decision from the RPG’s actual install-size figure and your own free space, not from its 100-hour playtime. Delete or customize existing installations first. Choose a compatible M.2 SSD when the RPG and other PS5 games must remain ready to launch; choose USB extended storage when you are happy to archive PS5 games and copy them back before playing. Treat saved data separately and protect it through the supported PlayStation Plus cloud workflow.
