To make room before downloading a large PS5 game, open Settings > Storage, identify what is using console space, then delete an installed game or app, remove supported game content through Customize, or move games to another supported location. Sony says deleted purchases remain in your game library for redownload. Because game sizes change and vary by title, use the current PlayStation Store listing or the download prompt rather than a universal “large game” number.

How do I make room on my PS5 before downloading a big game?

Use this order when you need space immediately:

  1. Check the available capacity in Settings > Storage.
  2. Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps and review installed titles.
  3. Delete games or applications you can download again later.
  4. For a game that offers Customize, remove only the add-ons or portions you no longer need.
  5. If you want to keep an installation, move less-used games to USB extended storage or compatible M.2 storage.
  6. Check the target game’s current store listing or the PS5 download prompt to confirm the space it currently requires.

The right choice depends on whether you need the old game playable immediately, whether you are willing to copy it back later, and whether you already have compatible expansion storage.

Check available space and find what is consuming it

Open the storage summary

From the PS5 home screen, select Settings > Storage. The console separates usage into categories such as games, media and saved data. This is the authoritative starting point for deciding how much room you can reclaim, rather than relying on an estimate from a game’s box, an old article or a remembered download size.

Record the available space before making changes. After deleting or moving content, return to this screen and verify the new amount before starting the download.

Inspect installed games and applications

Choose Console Storage > Games and Apps. Review the list for games you have finished, applications you no longer use and installations that can be restored later. Sort or inspect the entries using the controls presented by your console, then select only items you are prepared to remove or relocate.

Sony’s storage guidance states: “Don’t worry, you won’t lose access to any deleted games or applications — you can re-download your purchases from your game library whenever you like.” That entitlement does not mean the files remain on the console; deleting an installation creates download work later.

Sony’s PS5 storage instructions document these menu paths and the redownload behavior.

Delete a game or app when you need the fastest result

When deletion is the sensible option

Deleting an installed game or app is the simplest way to reclaim console storage without purchasing hardware. It is appropriate when you have completed the title, rarely play it, or can tolerate downloading it again before your next session.

  • Use Games and Apps under Console Storage to select the installation you no longer need.
  • Confirm the deletion only after checking the title, especially if similarly named versions or add-ons are listed.
  • Return to the storage summary and verify that the recovered capacity is reflected.
  • Start the new game download only after checking its current required space.

A purchase being available for redownload is different from an installed copy being available to play. If your internet connection is limited or you expect to return to the deleted game soon, moving it may be a better fit than deleting it.

What deletion does not answer by itself

The storage screen also lists saved data separately from game installations. Do not treat a game deletion as a general saved-data management operation. If a particular save matters, inspect the saved-data controls separately before removing anything from that category.

Remove only part of a game with Customize

Look for the Customize control

Some games expose a Customize option in the storage management view. Sony says this can allow removal of supported portions, such as unused add-ons or content from a part of a game you have completed, while retaining the rest of the installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
  2. Select the game you want to keep installed.
  3. If Customize appears, review the listed portions and identify the add-on or completed content you no longer need.
  4. Remove only the selected portion and then recheck the storage summary.

Customize is game-dependent. Its absence is not an error and does not indicate that every game can be split into campaigns, languages or add-ons. If the option is not offered, use deletion or a supported move instead; do not assume that removing an arbitrary folder is safe.

Move games to USB extended storage

What USB storage can do

A supported USB extended-storage drive can move less-used PS5 game data off the console’s internal storage. This is useful when you want to keep the installation rather than download it again, but do not need that PS5 game available immediately.

PS4 games have a different behavior: Sony says they can be played directly from USB extended storage. A PS5 game stored there cannot be launched directly. Before playing it, copy it back to console storage or to an installed M.2 SSD.

Choose USB when copy-back time is acceptable

  • Good fit: an older PS5 game you want to archive, a library you rotate occasionally, or PS4 games you play regularly from the external drive.
  • Trade-off: a PS5 game must be copied back before play, so the drive is an archive location rather than a direct-play location for that generation.
  • Before moving: make sure the drive is supported for PS5 extended storage and has enough free capacity for the selected installation.

Use the move or copy control offered in the PS5 storage interface, then confirm the title’s new location. If the console still reports insufficient space, check the internal-storage summary again; an archived PS5 game does not become playable from USB merely because the transfer completed.

Add a compatible M.2 SSD for games that should stay playable

Why M.2 storage is different

A compatible M.2 SSD expands the storage locations from which PS5 games can run. Sony supports downloading games directly to M.2 storage and moving installed games there, so it is the more suitable long-term option when you want a larger library available without repeatedly copying PS5 titles back from USB.

Compatibility is not optional. The SSD must meet Sony’s current requirements for the PS5 model and installation. Verify those requirements before buying or installing a drive; do not infer compatibility from a generic “M.2” label or from a drive’s use in a computer.

Follow Sony’s current M.2 SSD installation and compatibility instructions for the required specifications and installation procedure.

Choose M.2 when direct play matters

  • Good fit: a large PS5 library, frequent switching between titles, or a desire to select expanded storage as a download destination.
  • Trade-off: you must obtain a drive that satisfies Sony’s requirements and install it correctly; an unsuitable drive is not a safe shortcut.
  • After installation: confirm that the PS5 recognizes the storage, then use the console’s storage controls to move games or select the expanded location for downloads.

Sony’s current requirements do not establish a universal capacity, speed, price or free-space threshold for M.2 drives. Those values depend on the current compatible product and the PS5 requirements in force when you install it.

Keep saved data separate from installed game files

Installed game data, saved games, screenshots and video clips are handled differently. Sony’s storage table identifies PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5 saved data; it does not present ordinary USB storage as a destination for PS5 saves. Therefore, do not select an external game-storage workflow expecting it to back up PS5 saves automatically.

PlayStation Plus members can use the supported cloud-storage controls for PS5 saved data. PS4 saved data and screenshots or video clips have different USB handling, so use the category-specific options shown by the console rather than applying the PS5-save workflow to every type of file.

Before deleting anything from Saved Data, Media Gallery or another non-game category, identify exactly what the item is and which backup or synchronization option the PS5 offers for that category.

Which storage choice fits your situation?

Option Use it when Important limitation
Delete an installed game or app You need space immediately and can download the title again later. The installation is gone, although Sony says purchases remain in the game library for redownload.
Remove a game portion The title offers Customize and you want to retain the rest of the installation. Only supported games and listed portions can be removed.
USB extended storage You want to archive less-used PS5 games or play PS4 games from the external drive. PS5 games must be copied to console or M.2 storage before they can be played.
Compatible M.2 SSD You want additional storage from which PS5 games can remain playable and receive direct downloads. The drive must satisfy Sony’s current compatibility and installation requirements.
PlayStation Plus cloud storage You need supported cloud storage for PS5 saved data. It stores saves, not installed game data, and is intended for PlayStation Plus members.

Prepare the download without guessing the required space

Use the title’s current requirement

There is no reliable universal number that defines a “large” PS5 game. The required space can differ by title and can change as the listing or installation changes. Open the game’s current PlayStation Store listing or begin the download far enough for the PS5 prompt to show its present requirement, then compare that figure with the available capacity shown under Settings > Storage.

Do not treat a game’s advertised download figure as a guarantee that the console will accept the installation with exactly that amount free. If the prompt reports that more space is needed, return to Games and Apps, remove another selected item or move an installation, and check the storage summary again.

Use a staged cleanup

  1. Start with clearly finished or rarely used applications.
  2. Check whether the target game or another large title offers Customize.
  3. Move, rather than delete, a PS5 game you expect to play again but do not need today.
  4. Use an M.2 SSD if repeated copy-back operations would conflict with how you use the console.
  5. Recheck storage and the download prompt immediately before confirming the new installation.

This sequence limits irreversible-looking decisions: you reclaim quick space first, preserve supported content where possible, and reserve hardware changes for a continuing capacity problem.

Common problems and the correct fix

“I deleted a game, but I still cannot download the new one.”

Open Settings > Storage again to confirm that the deletion completed and note the updated available capacity. Compare it with the current requirement shown by the game’s store listing or download prompt. If the gap remains, remove or move another item through Console Storage > Games and Apps; do not assume the old game’s displayed size was the exact amount needed for the new installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The game has no Customize option.”

That title does not expose supported partial-content removal in the storage interface. Choose between deleting the installation and downloading it later, or moving it to supported storage. Do not manually remove files outside the PS5 controls.

“My PS5 game is on the USB drive, but it will not start.”

This is expected for PS5 games on USB extended storage. Copy the game to console storage or an installed M.2 SSD before playing it. A PS4 game can run directly from USB extended storage under Sony’s stated behavior.

“I want more room but do not want to delete anything.”

Move less-used PS5 games to USB extended storage if you accept copying them back later, or install a compatible M.2 SSD if you need those games to remain playable from expanded storage. Cloud storage addresses supported PS5 saved data, not the space occupied by installed games.

A practical decision checklist

  • Have you checked Settings > Storage rather than guessing how much room is free?
  • Did you inspect Console Storage > Games and Apps before deleting anything?
  • Does the title offer Customize, and are the portions you plan to remove genuinely unnecessary?
  • If you selected USB extended storage, do you understand that PS5 games require a copy-back before play?
  • If you are considering an M.2 SSD, did you verify its compatibility against Sony’s current requirements?
  • Are saved data and media being managed through their own controls rather than treated as installed game files?
  • Does the available capacity meet the target game’s current store or download-prompt requirement?

Once those checks are complete, begin the download from the destination storage location you selected. If the console’s requirement changes or another title is needed urgently, repeat the storage check instead of relying on an old size estimate.
