If a PS5 game is missing from the PlayStation Store, first determine whether you already own it. A purchased game should be available in the buying account’s Game Library, even when it is not visible in the Store. Check the account, transaction history, hidden items, Console Sharing, and licenses before assuming the release is unavailable.
If the game was never purchased and the Store listing is genuinely absent in your country, your practical alternatives are a confirmed physical PS5 edition or, for some titles, a qualifying PS4 edition with a PS5 upgrade. Neither option exists for every game, and moving or copying game files cannot create a purchase entitlement.

Start by identifying which problem you have
The same symptom—“I cannot download this game”—can have four different causes:

- You bought the game, but you are signed in to a different PlayStation account.
- You own it, but it is hidden, its license is not being recognized, or another account’s sharing setting is disabled.
- The game is listed in your library, but the download is failing or stuck.
- The title was never purchased and no digital release is currently offered in your account’s regional Store.
Follow the ownership checks before looking for a disc. A genuine Store purchase is tied to the account that completed the transaction; an installed copy or a transferred data file is not proof of ownership.

When a purchased game is missing from your PS5
1. Sign in to the account that bought it
On the PS5, switch to the PlayStation account used for the original purchase. If someone else in the household bought the game, their account—not your local user profile—is the account that owns the entitlement. Review the account’s transaction history and confirm that the payment completed rather than remaining pending, canceled, or reversed.
Check the exact edition as well. A standard game, deluxe edition, trial, bundle, and add-on can have separate library entries. Searching for a different edition can make a valid purchase appear to be missing.
2. Look in Game Library, not only the Store
Open Game Library and search the collection for the title. PlayStation’s support guidance says purchased content should appear there. A Store search can be misleading when a listing has changed, is delisted, or is not offered in the current region; the account library is the more useful place to verify an existing purchase.
Use the library filters and search spelling that matches the title. If the game was bought as part of a bundle, look for the bundle’s included game or the edition name shown on the original receipt.
3. Check hidden games
Use the library’s hidden-content view and remove the title from the hidden list if necessary. Hiding a game removes it from normal library views but does not cancel the purchase. After unhiding it, return to the game page and select the download option again.
4. Check sharing from another account
If you never bought the game yourself and were playing it through another account, the owner must have Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on this PS5. With that feature enabled, other users on the designated console can play the owner’s purchased and downloaded games, including while offline. The setting can be enabled on only one PS5 at a time, so activating it on a different console can make shared games disappear from yours.
Have the owner sign in and verify the setting rather than purchasing the game again on a second account. If the owner recently changed consoles, sharing may now be active elsewhere. The entitlement remains with the owner account even when another household user launches the game.
Restore a missing or locked license
A padlock icon, a game that appears in the library but will not launch, or an add-on that is suddenly unavailable can indicate a license-recognition problem. On PS5, use this exact path:
- Open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Select Restore Licenses and follow the on-screen confirmation.
PlayStation states that restoring licenses does not affect your data. After it completes, return to Game Library and try the download or launch again. If the game belongs to another household account, restore licenses while signed in to that owner account and recheck Console Sharing.

License restoration is not a way to recover a refunded or canceled transaction, and it cannot turn a copied installation into a purchase. It refreshes the console’s recognition of entitlements that the account already holds.
When a game download will not start
If the game is visible in your library and the entitlement is correct, treat the issue as a download failure rather than an unavailable release.

- Open Downloads/Uploads and pause the game.
- Wait briefly, then select Resume.
- If it stalls again, cancel and delete the queued item.
- Return to Game Library, open the game, and start the download again.
Deleting a failed queue entry removes the attempted download, not the purchase. Start it again from the library so the console requests the entitlement and download afresh. If several items are queued, retry the game by itself so another download does not obscure the error.
Check PlayStation service status
A Store or network outage can prevent a valid download from starting. Check the official PlayStation service-status page before repeatedly deleting and re-adding the same queue item. If services are reporting an incident, retry after the incident is resolved.
Update the PS5 system software
Install any pending system-software update and restart the console. PlayStation’s download troubleshooting guidance includes current system software as a prerequisite for resolving download errors. Recheck the queue after the restart instead of assuming that a failed attempt means the title has been removed.
Verify required and available storage
Open the game’s product view to see its stated free-space requirement. Then check the console’s available capacity at Settings > Storage. A download can fail when the nominal game size fits but the console lacks additional working space for installation, patching, or unpacking.
Delete or move items only after checking what you need to keep. USB extended storage can help manage installed data, but the console still needs sufficient usable space for the installation process and later updates. Storage management does not alter the game’s license.
Escalate only after the basic checks
Safe Mode cache-clearing or database-rebuild procedures are later troubleshooting options, not the first response to a missing Store listing. Use them only after confirming the account, license, service status, software version, and storage. If you contact PlayStation Support, record the exact error code or message and the time of the failed attempt; those details help distinguish an account, network, storage, or service-side problem.
How to tell whether the digital release is truly unavailable
Do not treat an absent search result as universal proof that a game has no digital edition. PlayStation Store catalogs are tied to the country or region of the account, and listings can change. Confirm the exact title, edition, and account country or region. A release may be available in one storefront but not another, or a particular edition may have been removed while another edition remains.

If you never purchased the title and it does not appear as a buyable product in your regional Store, there may be no digital purchase route for that account at this time. Because the game name and region are not specified here, availability must be checked on the title’s own Store page rather than assumed from another country’s listing.

Do not switch account regions casually to chase a listing. Purchases, currency, payment methods, age settings, and upgrade eligibility can depend on the account’s registered country. Verify the region first, then compare only editions that are sold for that account.
Physical PS5 editions: the direct alternative when one exists
A confirmed physical PS5 edition can provide a way to install and play a game that you cannot buy digitally. Insert the disc to begin installation; the console reads the game data locally, but the disc remains the proof of ownership needed for disc-based play.
Physical compatibility depends on the exact console model. A PS5 with a compatible disc drive can use PS5 game discs. A PS5 Digital Edition without a disc drive cannot read a PS5 disc. Some console configurations accept a separately sold drive, but verify the drive’s compatibility with your specific model before purchasing one.

- The copy is genuine and usable in your account’s region where regional restrictions apply.
- Your PS5 has a compatible disc drive, either built in or correctly installed.
Do not infer that a physical edition exists merely because a game is popular or because a listing appears for a different platform. Confirm the PS5 disc edition itself and its current availability. Check the seller’s region, condition, included content, and return policy; a PS4 box, soundtrack bundle, or collector item is not automatically a playable PS5 disc edition.
Disc installation can still require updates or patches from PlayStation Network. A physical copy solves the purchase route, not every network or storage requirement.
Using a PS4 edition or upgrade
Some PS4 games have a PS5 upgrade offer, but eligibility is title-specific. Sony’s upgrade terms can be free, paid, or limited to a particular period, and the offer can vary by region and edition. Check the game’s current upgrade information rather than assuming every PS4 purchase qualifies.
Digital PS4 purchases
If the account owns a qualifying digital PS4 version, the eligible PS5 upgrade should be presented through that account’s library or the game’s Store page. The upgrade may cost money or may be free; the title’s current offer determines which. A PS4 purchase that is not listed as eligible remains a PS4 entitlement even if the PS5 can run the game through backward compatibility.

Disc-based PS4 purchases
A disc-based upgrade requires a PS5 with a disc drive. A PS4 disc cannot be used on a PS5 Digital Edition. Even after the PS5 version is installed, the qualifying PS4 disc must remain inserted whenever you play the disc-based upgrade. The disc is the continuing license check.
Before relying on a PS4 copy, verify backward compatibility, the exact edition, upgrade price, offer duration, and any regional requirement. A PS4 release is not automatically a substitute for a missing PS5 digital release. If you later sell or lose the qualifying disc, access to the disc-based upgrade can stop because the console can no longer verify it.
Why copied game data does not solve a missing license
PS5 data transfer and USB extended storage can save download time when you are moving an installation between consoles or preserving already downloaded files. They do not grant a digital entitlement.
- For a digital game, the destination console still needs the owning account and downloads the title from that account’s Game Library.
- For a disc game, the appropriate disc must still be inserted for play.
- A copied installation without either the owner account or the required disc can remain unusable, often showing a padlock or an ownership prompt.
Use transfer tools for data management, not as a method for obtaining a game that was never purchased or is not sold in your region. Copying files also does not bypass edition, region, upgrade, or Console Sharing rules.

Questions to answer before buying a substitute
Is the Store listing missing because of region?
Confirm the account country or region and search for the exact edition. A result from another country’s Store does not establish that your account can buy or download it.
Does a physical PS5 edition actually exist?
Look for the title’s specific PS5 disc release, not merely a PS4, PC, or collector listing. Check that the edition matches the content you want and that a copy is currently obtainable.
Does your console accept discs?
Identify whether your PS5 has a built-in drive, a compatible separately installed drive, or no disc capability. A disc purchase is not useful on a console that cannot read it.
Does the PS4 version have a current upgrade?
Read the title-specific upgrade terms for price, expiration, region, edition, and disc requirements. If the offer is limited, its availability can change even when the PS4 game remains available.

Sony announced on July 1, 2026 that production of physical discs for new PlayStation-console games is scheduled to end starting in January 2028. Sony also said this does not affect games that released, or will release before then, in disc format. This policy does not mean every future game will have a physical edition, nor does it remove existing disc releases; it does mean a physical substitute should be verified title by title rather than treated as a permanent fallback.

A practical decision path
- Already bought it? Sign in to the purchasing account, check transaction history, Game Library, and hidden items.
- Shared from another account? Confirm that account’s Console Sharing and Offline Play setting is enabled on this PS5.
- Padlock or missing add-on? Restore licenses through Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- Listed but not downloading? Pause and resume, then cancel and delete the queue entry and retry from Game Library. Check service status, system software, and storage.
- Never purchased and absent from the regional Store? Check for a confirmed physical PS5 edition and disc-drive compatibility.
- Considering PS4? Verify backward compatibility and the title-specific upgrade terms, including whether the qualifying disc must remain inserted.
- Thinking of transferring files? Use transfer or USB storage only for data; retain the required account entitlement or disc.
This sequence separates an account or license problem from a failed download and from a release that genuinely cannot be purchased digitally in your region. It also prevents spending money on a disc or upgrade that your edition, region, or console cannot use.

Can a copied installation unlock a game that is unavailable digitally?
