To make a PS5 update games while you are away, enable Stay Connected to the Internet for Rest Mode, then choose whether the console should only download update files or also install them. Open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and turn on Stay Connected to the Internet. Next, go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates and enable Auto-Download or Auto-Install in Rest Mode. These controls apply to games and apps; PS5 system-software updates are managed in a separate menu.
What the PS5 automatic-update settings actually control
The PS5 has two different update systems. Game and app updates use the controls under Saved Data and Game/App Settings. The console’s own system software uses controls under System. Turning on one does not automatically configure the other.
For games and apps, the key decision is whether Rest Mode may only fetch an update file or may install it as well. Auto-Download downloads available game or app updates while the PS5 is resting, leaving the installation decision for later. Auto-Install in Rest Mode permits installation during Rest Mode. Sony recommends the download-only approach when you do not want an update to close or otherwise interrupt a game that is suspended on the console. PlayStation Support explains the two controls and their Rest Mode behavior.
Sony also states that when you start a game or app, it automatically updates to the newest version available. That means an update can still be detected when you launch a title, even if you chose not to install updates automatically in Rest Mode. See Sony’s PS5 and PS4 automatic-update guidance.

Before you change anything
- Keep the console online in Rest Mode. The PS5 cannot download or install Rest Mode updates unless Stay Connected to the Internet is enabled.
- Decide how much control you need. Auto-Download preserves a later install decision; Auto-Install allows the console to install while you are away.
- Separate game updates from system updates. The game/app page will not configure PS5 system-software downloads or installations.
- Allow for exceptions. Sony notes that some updates may require your approval, so automatic settings are not a guarantee that every update will finish without intervention.
No additional hardware purchase is established as necessary for enabling these settings. The configuration requires a PS5, an internet connection, and access to the menus described below.
Turn on the internet connection required by Rest Mode
- From the PS5 home screen, open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose Power Saving.
- Open Features Available in Rest Mode.
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
This setting is the prerequisite for both game/app update behavior and system-software update behavior while the console is in Rest Mode. If it is off, the later Auto-Download or Auto-Install choices cannot perform their Rest Mode work because the console is not permitted to maintain its internet connection there. Sony lists this Rest Mode requirement in its automatic-update instructions.
Enable automatic game and app updates
- Open Settings on the PS5.
- Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Automatic Updates.
- Turn on Auto-Download if you want update files downloaded in Rest Mode but want to decide when to install them.
- Turn on Auto-Install in Rest Mode if you permit the PS5 to install game and app updates while it remains in Rest Mode.
For the settings to work while you are away, complete both parts of the setup: first enable Stay Connected to the Internet, then choose the game/app update behavior on this page. The options are related, but they are not the same switch.

Sony specifically recommends Auto-Download when you do not want to close a suspended game. You can resume the game first and then choose whether to install the downloaded update. Select Auto-Install in Rest Mode only when that hands-off installation behavior is acceptable. The official support page describes this choice.
Which option should you use?
Use Auto-Download when a suspended game matters
A downloaded update is ready for your decision, while the installation is not authorized to happen automatically in Rest Mode. This is the conservative choice if you often leave a game suspended and want to return to that session before deciding whether to update. After you resume the game, review the prompt and choose whether to install.
Use Auto-Install when unattended completion is the priority
Auto-Install gives the PS5 permission to install game and app updates during Rest Mode. It reduces the amount of work left when you come back, but it gives up the guarantee that you will make the installation decision after resuming a suspended title.

Even if you leave automatic installation off, Sony says starting a game or app automatically updates it to the newest version available. Treat that as a launch-time check, not as evidence that every update was installed earlier in Rest Mode. Sony documents this launch behavior.

Turn on automatic PS5 system-software updates
Game and app updates do not control the PS5 operating system. Configure system software separately:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Choose System Software.
- Open System Software Update and Settings.
- Enable Download Update Files Automatically.
- Enable Install Update Files Automatically if you want system-software installation to occur during Rest Mode.
Sony describes these controls as allowing system software to update while the console is in Rest Mode. The internet prerequisite still applies: Stay Connected to the Internet must be enabled under System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Follow Sony’s separate system-software path for these settings.
A practical setup for different priorities
You want games ready but do not want a suspended session disturbed
- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Enable game/app Auto-Download.
- Leave game/app Auto-Install in Rest Mode off.
- When you return, resume the suspended game before deciding whether to install the downloaded update.
This setup uses the download-only behavior Sony recommends when preserving a suspended game is important.

- Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
- Open Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates.
- Enable Auto-Download.
- Enable Auto-Install in Rest Mode.
The first option allows the file to arrive; the second allows installation while resting. Both are needed for the fullest automatic behavior described by Sony.

You want both game readiness and system maintenance
- Complete the game/app setup that matches your suspended-game preference.
- Open System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings.
- Enable Download Update Files Automatically.
- Enable Install Update Files Automatically if unattended system installation is acceptable.
Do not assume that enabling system-software updates also enables game/app updates; each category keeps its own controls.
What happens when you return to the PS5
If you selected Auto-Download only
The update file may already be present, but installation remains a decision for you. Resume the game or open the relevant app and follow the on-screen installation prompt. This is the path to use when you want to inspect the suspended session first.
If you selected Auto-Install in Rest Mode
The PS5 was allowed to install the game or app update while resting. If an update could not complete automatically or requires approval, you may still see a prompt when you return. Sony cautions that some updates need user approval, so check the console rather than assuming a completely unattended result.
If you start a game or app without a completed update
Sony’s documented behavior is that starting a game or app automatically updates it to the newest version available. The exact prompt and timing can depend on what remains to be done, but the important distinction is that launch-time updating is separate from the Rest Mode settings.

Troubleshoot a PS5 game that did not update in Rest Mode
1. Verify the Rest Mode internet setting
Return to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and confirm that Stay Connected to the Internet is enabled. If it is disabled, neither game/app updates nor system-software updates can use the internet while the PS5 rests.
2. Check the game/app update controls
Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates. Confirm that Auto-Download is enabled. If you expected installation to be complete before returning, also check Auto-Install in Rest Mode; download-only configuration intentionally leaves installation for later.
3. Check the system-software page separately
If the issue concerns the PS5 operating system rather than a game or app, open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Confirm the relevant automatic download and installation controls there. Game/app settings cannot resolve a system-software update issue.

4. Look for an approval prompt
Sony notes that an update may sometimes need user approval. If the settings are correct but the update remains unfinished, inspect the PS5 for a prompt instead of treating the behavior as a settings failure. Sony directs users with update problems to PlayStation Repairs.
5. Use launch-time updating as a diagnostic clue
Start the affected game or app. Sony says it automatically updates to the newest available version when started. If a prompt appears, the title had not completed its update before launch; follow that prompt and then reassess the Rest Mode settings if the same situation recurs.
6. Escalate persistent failures through Sony’s support route
When the correct settings are enabled and an update still will not complete, use the PlayStation Repairs route linked from Sony’s automatic-update support article. The official guidance does not promise that every update will finish without intervention, so escalation is appropriate for repeated failures rather than repeatedly changing the same switches.
Common mistakes that make automatic updates appear broken
- Enabling Auto-Download but expecting installation. Downloading and installing are separate choices. Download-only behavior intentionally leaves the install decision to you.
- Skipping Stay Connected to the Internet. The update choices cannot operate in Rest Mode without this prerequisite.
- Changing system-software settings when a game is outdated. Game/app updates and PS5 system updates live in separate menu areas.
- Assuming an automatic setting overrides every approval request. Sony says some updates may require user approval.
- Expecting a suspended game to remain untouched after enabling Auto-Install. Auto-Install permits installation while resting; choose Auto-Download instead when you need to decide after resuming.
- Interpreting a launch update as proof that Rest Mode failed. Starting a game or app can itself trigger an update to the newest available version, independently of what happened while resting.
How to change your choice later
You can revisit the same settings whenever your priorities change. For game and app behavior, use Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Automatic Updates and switch Auto-Download or Auto-Install in Rest Mode as needed. For the PS5 operating system, use Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. If you disable Stay Connected to the Internet, Rest Mode downloads and installations will no longer have the required online connection, regardless of the update toggles on the other pages.
