The controls for a ChatGPT Dot are separate, not one master privacy switch. Microphone permission is enforced by your computer or phone; ChatGPT Memory controls what is shared for personalization; the dot can retain its own conversation context; Improve the model for everyone controls eligible model-improvement use; and Voice or Dictation audio follows additional retention and sharing rules. Use the setting that matches the data you want to block or remove. OpenAI notes that labels and availability can vary by plan, region, workspace, platform, and staged rollout.

Know which control changes which data
Before changing anything, identify the boundary you want to control. A device permission can stop microphone access immediately, but it cannot erase a conversation. Turning off Memory changes future sharing between ChatGPT and the dot, but it does not remove context the dot already received. Resetting the dot removes the dot and its retained context, while separately stored ChatGPT files and conversations remain. Model-improvement controls affect eligible use of new conversations; they are not deletion tools.

These controls are complementary. For example, revoking microphone access prevents a dot-connected computer from obtaining new microphone input, while turning off Memory addresses personalization sharing. Neither action by itself removes the dot’s existing context.

Grant or revoke microphone access
Connect the dot and approve computer access
A computer-connected dot needs two things before it can use the computer microphone: an active connection between the dot and the computer, and operating-system permission for the ChatGPT app to use the microphone. If either condition is missing, the dot cannot capture microphone input.
- Connect the dot to the computer using the setup flow for your dot.
- When the operating system asks whether ChatGPT may access the microphone, choose Allow for normal use.
- If you previously denied access, open the computer’s privacy or permissions settings, find the ChatGPT app in the microphone list, and enable access. The exact menu name differs between operating systems and versions.
- Return to the dot and start a test interaction. If the app still reports that it cannot hear you, verify that the selected input device is the intended microphone and that another application is not holding exclusive access.

Use ChatGPT Voice on the web or mobile app
ChatGPT Voice has its own permission prompt. In a browser, allow microphone access for the ChatGPT site when prompted. In the mobile app, allow microphone access for the ChatGPT app in the phone’s app permissions. Denying the prompt leaves text chat available but prevents Voice from receiving microphone input.

Muting is a session control, not a change to the operating-system permission: the app may still retain permission for a later conversation. To block access outside the session, revoke the browser or app permission at the device level.
What a microphone change does not do
- It does not delete existing Voice transcripts, audio clips, or ordinary chat messages.
- It does not turn off ChatGPT Memory or remove context already held by the dot.
- It does not opt you out of model improvement; that is controlled separately under Data controls.
Review and disable shared ChatGPT Memory
Open Memory settings
- In ChatGPT, open Settings.
- Select Personalization.
- Open Memory and review the available switches and memory-management options.
- On mobile, open the dot profile, choose Customize, then Memory.
The exact controls can differ by plan, region, platform, workspace, and rollout status. If a control is absent, the account or workspace may not currently support it, or an administrator may control it.
What turning Memory off means
Disabling Memory stops future sharing between ChatGPT and the dot. It does not erase information the dot has already received. The OpenAI Help Center states: Turning off Memory in ChatGPT stops that sharing. It does not delete information that your dot has already received.
Treat this as a prospective setting, not a deletion command.

To remove dot-held information, use the dot reset process described in the next section. Other ChatGPT memories remain manageable through ChatGPT’s own Memory settings; disabling the feature does not automatically clear every account memory.

Why the dot’s context is different
The dot can retain context from its conversations and plugins. Current documentation does not provide a screen for viewing, deleting, or editing individual dot memories. Consequently, you cannot selectively inspect one retained item and remove only that item from the dot.
Reset or delete the dot
- Open the dot’s profile.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose the reset or delete option shown for the dot.
- Read the deletion notice carefully, then confirm only if you want the broader removal.
Resetting deletes the dot itself, including its conversations, saved memories, retained dot context, and scheduled tasks. This is broader than turning off Memory and cannot be used as a narrow “forget this one fact” command.
Data that remains elsewhere
Files, Codex threads, and ChatGPT conversations created by the dot are stored separately. Deleting the dot does not automatically erase those items. Review and delete them in their respective ChatGPT locations if you also want them removed. Account-level ChatGPT memories are likewise handled through ChatGPT’s Memory settings, not by assuming that a dot reset clears the entire account.
Opt out of model improvement separately
Change the account setting
- Open ChatGPT Settings.
- Select Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
For personal plans, this switch controls whether eligible new conversations and dot work may be used to improve models. It is separate from Memory: disabling Memory does not opt you out of model improvement, and opting out of model improvement does not erase the dot’s retained context.
What opting out does and does not do
- It changes the treatment of eligible new activity after the setting is changed.
- It does not delete saved chats or hide them from chat history.
- It does not retroactively remove information that was already disassociated and used under earlier settings.
- It does not revoke microphone permission or clear Voice audio.
OpenAI says Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspace content is not used to train models by default. Organization-level controls and policies can change which settings are visible or available, so follow your workspace administrator’s policy where it applies.

Check Voice, Advanced Voice, and Dictation audio controls
Live and Advanced Voice retention
OpenAI’s Voice guide says Live and Advanced Voice audio clips are stored with the transcript in chat history and retained for 30 days. If you delete the associated chat, the clips are deleted within 30 days, subject to security, safety, legal, or previously disassociated training-data exceptions.
Standard Voice behavior
Standard Voice audio is deleted after transcription unless you chose to share it for training. That rule differs from Live and Advanced Voice, so identify the mode you used before assuming that all clips have the same lifecycle.
Control sharing in Data controls
For consumer personal workspaces, audio and video clip sharing is controlled separately through Data Controls. Turn off the relevant sharing toggle to stop new sharing. Clips that were previously disassociated may continue to be used, so a later switch cannot guarantee removal of that already-disassociated material.

Dictation is a separate case
Dictation audio has its own FAQ and retention details. Do not infer Dictation behavior from the Live, Advanced, or standard Voice rules; check the Dictation-specific controls and notice presented by your app.
Use Temporary Chat for a single sensitive conversation
Temporary Chat is a chat-level choice rather than an account-wide privacy switch. A temporary conversation:
- does not appear in chat history;
- does not create or update memories;
- is not used to improve models while it remains temporary; and
- may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
Before starting, choose whether the temporary conversation may use existing memories, custom instructions, or plugins. This lets you avoid creating a new memory while deciding whether previously stored personalization should be available in that session.

If you save a Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat governed by your account settings. Saving therefore changes its history and retention treatment; do it only when you want the conversation kept as an ordinary chat.

“I do not want the dot to hear me.”
Revoke microphone permission for the ChatGPT app at the computer or phone level. If you only need a short pause during Voice, use the in-conversation mute button. A device-level revocation is the stronger boundary because it prevents the app from accessing the microphone until permission is restored.
“I do not want new personal details shared with the dot.”
Turn off ChatGPT Memory under Settings → Personalization → Memory (or the mobile dot profile’s Customize → Memory). Remember that this does not erase details already delivered to the dot; reset the dot if removing its retained context is necessary.
“I want to remove everything the dot remembers.”
Use the dot profile’s three-dot menu and reset or delete the dot. Then separately review ChatGPT files, Codex threads, ordinary chats, and account Memory, because those stores are not automatically removed by deleting the dot.
“I do not want eligible new chats used to improve models.”
Turn off Improve the model for everyone in Settings → Data controls. Keep the distinction clear: chats can remain in history, and this change does not erase earlier data.
“I am concerned about recorded Voice audio.”
Identify whether you used Live, Advanced, standard Voice, or Dictation. Review the relevant Data Controls sharing toggle, delete the associated chat when appropriate, and account for the documented 30-day retention or deletion windows and their exceptions.

“I need one conversation that does not affect history or Memory.”
Start a Temporary Chat and review its choices for existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins before sending sensitive information. Do not save it unless you want it converted to a regular chat.
Troubleshoot when a setting appears not to work
The dot still cannot hear you after permission is allowed
- Confirm the dot is connected to the intended computer.
- Check that the ChatGPT app, not only another browser or utility, has microphone permission.
- Verify the selected input device and system microphone level.
- Check whether the session is muted in the dot or Voice interface.
- Close and reopen the app after changing operating-system permissions.
Memory is off, but the dot seems to know an old detail
Turning Memory off stops future sharing; it does not delete information already received. Reset the dot to remove its own retained context, then manage account-level ChatGPT memories separately.
Chats remain visible after opting out of model improvement
That is expected. Improve the model for everyone controls eligible model-improvement use, not chat-history storage. Delete chats through the normal history controls if your goal is removal from the account interface.

An audio clip is still present after deleting a chat
Live and Advanced Voice clips can take up to 30 days to be deleted after chat deletion, and security, safety, legal, or previously disassociated training-data exceptions can apply. Standard Voice and Dictation follow different rules, so identify the mode before judging the result.
A control is missing
Feature availability and labels can change by plan, region, platform, workspace, and staged rollout. Check whether an administrator governs the workspace and use the current controls shown in your account rather than relying on a label from another platform.
