Windows exposes basic power controls in the Settings app, but important options—lid behavior, Hibernate, power plans, and diagnostic tools—still live in Control Panel or powercfg. The correct path depends on whether you are using Windows 11 or Windows 10, whether the PC has a battery, and whether it supports Modern Standby.
This guide shows where to find the settings, what each option does, and which commands help when a PC refuses to sleep, wakes unexpectedly, or drains its battery too quickly.
Manage power settings in Windows 11
Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery. Depending on the PC, battery, Windows build, and manufacturer configuration, you may see Power mode, Energy saver, Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts, Energy recommendations, and Battery usage.

Choose a Windows 11 power mode
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Expand Power mode.
- Choose a mode for Plugged in and, where available, On battery.
| Mode | Best for | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Best power efficiency | Longer battery life and quieter operation | Reduces power consumption and may limit performance |
| Balanced | Normal everyday use | Balances responsiveness, heat, noise, and battery use |
| Best performance | Compiling, rendering, gaming, and demanding workloads | Prioritizes performance and generally uses more power |
If the selector is unavailable, open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options and select Balanced. A custom classic power plan can prevent the modern Power mode control from being changed. Return to Settings > System > Power & battery afterward.

Power mode is not available on every computer. Hardware and manufacturer firmware determine which choices Windows exposes.
Configure Energy saver
Windows 11 version 24H2 and later calls this feature Energy saver. Older Windows 11 builds and Windows 10 use Battery saver.
- Go to Settings > System > Power & battery.
- Expand Energy saver.
- Set Turn energy saver on when battery level is at, or enable Always use energy saver.
- If available, enable Lower screen brightness when using energy saver.
Energy saver can also be switched on from the taskbar battery or Quick Settings area. It manages power-consuming processes and activity, so performance may drop while it is active. Use it when preserving the last portion of a battery charge matters more than maximum speed.
Set screen, sleep, and hibernate timeouts
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen, sleep & hibernate timeouts. Some Windows 11 builds label this section Screen and sleep.
Set separate values for:
- Turn my screen off after when the PC is on battery
- Turn my screen off after when the PC is plugged in
- Make my device sleep after when the PC is on battery
- Make my device sleep after when the PC is plugged in
A practical starting point for a laptop is a short display timeout on battery, a longer timeout on AC power, and sleep after 10–15 minutes of inactivity on battery. Adjust the values if sleep interrupts downloads, presentations, or long-running tasks.
Microsoft documents these adjusted Windows 11 defaults:
| Sleep model | Screen off on battery | Screen off plugged in | Sleep on battery | Sleep plugged in |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Modern Standby | 3 minutes | 5 minutes | 3 minutes | 5 minutes |
| Traditional S3 sleep | 3 minutes | 5 minutes | 10 minutes | 15 minutes |
These are documented defaults, not a guarantee that every manufacturer’s Windows installation uses the same values.

Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy recommendations. Select Apply all, or apply individual recommendations.
Possible recommendations include changing screen brightness, shortening screen or sleep timeouts, turning off the screen saver, reducing display power for the content shown, dimming the display when you look away, or stopping USB devices when the screen is off. The exact list depends on the device’s sensors, battery, and hardware. For example, presence-sensor suggestions only appear on compatible PCs, while the USB recommendation is not available on devices without batteries.

Reduce background battery use for an app
- Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage.
- Under Battery usage per app, find the application.
- Select its More options button.
- Choose Manage background activity.
- If the control is available, change Let this app run in the background.
Not every application provides a background-activity control. Desktop applications and some programs with their own services may continue operating outside this Windows setting.
Choose a power-saving GPU for a particular app
On a laptop with more than one graphics processor, assign less demanding applications to the power-saving GPU:
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics.
- Under Custom options for apps, select the application.
- Select Options.
- Choose Power saving, then select Save.
The available GPU choices depend on the graphics hardware installed in the computer. Games and 3D applications may need the high-performance GPU.
Manage power settings in Windows 10
Windows 10 uses different Settings paths from Windows 11. Open Start > Settings > System > Power & sleep to configure separate screen and sleep behavior for battery power and AC power.
The controls are labeled:
- On battery power, turn off after
- When plugged in, turn off after
- On battery power, PC goes to sleep after
- When plugged in, PC goes to sleep after
Configure Battery saver in Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > System > Battery.
- Set Turn battery saver on automatically if my battery falls below.
- To enable it immediately until the next charge, select Battery saver status until next charge.
You can also select the taskbar battery icon or open Quick Settings to access Battery saver.
Use the Windows 10 power-mode slider
On supported Windows 10 PCs, select the taskbar battery icon and move the slider toward a mode such as Best battery life. Microsoft documents this slider for Windows 10 version 1703 and later, but it is not available on every PC. Hardware and manufacturer support determine whether it appears.
For Windows 11, use Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode instead of looking for the old taskbar slider.
Change what the power button and laptop lid do
These controls remain in the classic Power Options interface on both versions of Windows.
- Open Control Panel.
- Go to System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what the power buttons do or Choose what closing the lid does.
- Select Change settings that are currently unavailable if protected options are greyed out.
- Choose the action for On battery and Plugged in.
- Select Save changes.
Available actions can include Sleep, Hibernate, Shut down, or Do nothing. Setting Do nothing for a laptop lid can be useful when using an external monitor and keyboard, but the closed laptop may run hotter because it continues operating with restricted airflow.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Enable Hibernate
Hibernate saves the current Windows session to disk and powers the computer down more completely than Sleep. Resume is slower than waking from Sleep, but it avoids the same level of standby battery drain.
- Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what the power buttons do.
- Select Change settings that are currently unavailable.
- Under Shutdown settings, select Hibernate.
- Select Save changes.
Hibernate should then be available under Start > Power > Hibernate. It may not be available on every PC. Systems using InstantGo, commonly reported through powercfg /a as Modern Standby, may not expose it.
If the option is missing, open an elevated Windows Terminal or Command Prompt and run:
powercfg /hibernate on
The abbreviated form is powercfg /h on. To disable the feature and remove the hibernation file, use:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →powercfg /hibernate off
Windows supports a full and a reduced hibernation file. A full file supports Hibernate, Hybrid Sleep, and Fast Startup. A reduced file supports Fast Startup only. To restore a full file, run:
powercfg /h /type full
To use a reduced file, run:
powercfg /h /size 0
powercfg /h /type reduced
Use classic Power Options and power plans
Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options. Windows also calls power plans power schemes; the powercfg command uses that terminology.
Classic Power Options is useful when the Settings app does not expose a control, when you need to configure lid actions, or when a custom plan has locked the modern Power mode selector. Select Balanced to return to the standard plan.
Do not treat the often-repeated “Ultimate Performance” command as a guaranteed speed upgrade:

powercfg /duplicatescheme e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61
This duplicates an existing power scheme; it does not overclock the CPU. The command may fail or provide no useful option if the scheme is unavailable, hidden, or unsuitable for the device.
Useful power-management commands
Run these commands in Windows Terminal or Command Prompt. Use an administrator window for commands that modify system power configuration or when Windows reports an access error.
| Purpose | Command |
|---|---|
| List installed power schemes | powercfg /list |
| Show the active scheme | powercfg /getactivescheme |
| Display active scheme settings | powercfg /query |
| Activate a scheme | powercfg /setactive scheme_GUID |
| Check supported sleep states | powercfg /a |
| Show what prevents sleep or display-off | powercfg /requests |
| Show what woke the PC last | powercfg /lastwake |
| List armed wake timers | powercfg /waketimers |
Replace scheme_GUID with the identifier returned by powercfg /list.
Change common timeout values from the command line
The /change values are in minutes and modify the current scheme:
Recommended Free Tools
powercfg /change monitor-timeout-ac 5
powercfg /change monitor-timeout-dc 5
powercfg /change standby-timeout-ac 15
powercfg /change standby-timeout-dc 5
powercfg /change hibernate-timeout-ac 60
powercfg /change hibernate-timeout-dc 30
The suffix -ac means plugged in; -dc means battery power. Other supported settings include disk-timeout-ac, disk-timeout-dc, standby-timeout-ac, standby-timeout-dc, hibernate-timeout-ac, and hibernate-timeout-dc.
Generate battery and energy reports
To create an HTML battery report, run:
powercfg /batteryreport
powercfg /batteryreport /output "C:Tempbattery-report.html"
The report includes battery capacity and usage information that can help identify battery wear.
For an energy-efficiency report, close programs and documents, leave the PC idle, and run:
powercfg /energy
powercfg /energy /output "C:Tempenergy-report.html" /duration 120
The default analysis lasts 60 seconds. The report can identify common problems such as power requests, device issues, and settings that reduce efficiency.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Modern Standby versus traditional Sleep
Run powercfg /a to see which sleep model the PC supports. Modern Standby appears as S0 Low Power Idle. Traditional systems report S1–S3 sleep states.
Best Value
- Check Your Charger Size: Compare your power brick with the listed usable dimensions before ordering to choose the correct Medium or Large holder
- Adhesive or Screw Installation: Use the adhesive pad for quick no-drill mounting on a clean smooth surface, or screws for stronger long-term support
- Adjustable Dual-Strap Hold: Two hook-and-loop straps secure laptop chargers, USB-C power bricks and small adapters while reducing slipping and movement
- Durable Metal Construction: Powder-coated steel provides stable everyday support, while the open base helps maintain airflow around the power adapter
- Cleaner Under-Desk Setup: Keeps bulky chargers, adapters and excess cable off the floor and out of sight for a cleaner home office or gaming desk
Modern Standby can remain partially active while the screen is off and may perform permitted network or maintenance activity. It is therefore not identical to traditional S3 Sleep and can sometimes account for unexpected battery drain or background activity.
Microsoft does not support switching between Modern Standby and S3 by changing an ordinary BIOS setting. The power model is tied to the system design and Windows installation.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 version 22H2 reached end of support on October 14, 2025 for the normal Home, Pro, Enterprise, and Education editions covered by Microsoft’s release information. The operating system still runs, but standard security updates and technical support ended for those editions. LTSC releases follow separate lifecycle dates.
Practical troubleshooting checklist
- If the Power mode selector is locked, select Balanced in classic Power Options.
- If Hibernate is missing, run
powercfg /a, then enable it withpowercfg /h onif the hardware supports it. - If the PC will not sleep, run
powercfg /requestsand investigate the listed application or driver. - If it wakes unexpectedly, run
powercfg /lastwakeandpowercfg /waketimers. - If battery life is poor, generate
powercfg /batteryreportand review background-app usage under Battery usage. - If the display or sleep settings differ from the values you expected, check both battery and plugged-in columns and remember that manufacturer firmware can change the available controls.
