Fortnite does not have one master switch for every kind of play and purchase. The reliable approach is layered: use Epic Games parental controls for purchases processed by Epic, the console or device’s controls for platform billing, Fortnite’s separate V-Bucks setting for paid random items, and account-wide Fortnite/UEFN time limits alongside any device-level schedule. A child’s age and consent status can add another restriction, especially for accounts under 13 or below the applicable regional digital-consent age.
Start by identifying where the payment is processed
Before changing a setting, find out how the child is buying content. Fortnite transactions can be handled by Epic Games, by a console platform, or with V-Bucks already in the account. Each route has a different control boundary.
| Transaction route | What it covers | What it does not cover | Where to manage it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Epic payment | Real-money purchases processed through Epic, including eligible Fortnite purchases | Platform-billed purchases and items bought with V-Bucks | Epic account Parental Controls |
| Platform billing | Purchases charged through PlayStation, Steam, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or another platform account | Epic-payment transactions outside that platform | The platform’s family, purchase-approval, or payment settings |
| V-Bucks | Digital items purchased with the V-Bucks balance | The Epic payment PIN and the under-13 Epic-payment daily limit | Fortnite/Epic controls for V-Bucks and paid random items |
| Gift-card balance | Spending from funds added to the Epic account balance | Purchases made through another payment route; it is not a parental-control switch | Epic account balance and the account’s other controls |
Check the receipt or purchase history when you are unsure. The merchant name and platform account shown there usually reveal which control must be changed. Do not assume that an Epic PIN protects a purchase simply because the child launched Fortnite through Epic.

- Sign in to the Epic account used for the child. Use the parent or guardian account that manages the child’s parental settings, not a separate account that has no authority over them.
- Open the account’s Parental Controls area. The exact page layout can change, so use the current Parental Controls label in the Epic account settings.
- Create a parental-controls PIN when prompted. Keep it private from the child and store it in a password manager or another secure place.
- Turn on “Require a PIN for Epic Games Payments.” Save the change and review the other available restrictions before leaving the page.
- Remove unnecessary stored payment methods on a PC. Epic suggests removing stored purchasing methods as an additional way to prevent an unintended charge; this is a practical safeguard, not a replacement for the PIN.
The PIN requirement does not extend to purchases billed by PlayStation, Steam, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or another platform. Configure those accounts separately. It also does not protect a child who spends an existing V-Bucks balance.
What happens if you change your mind?
Epic says the parental-controls PIN cannot be deleted after it has been set up. You can, however, adjust or turn off individual restrictions. Treat the PIN as a permanent account-level credential: changing a switch does not erase the PIN or transfer responsibility for platform purchases.
Use the platform’s controls for console and device billing
If the child pays through a console or other platform, the platform is the payment processor and its family controls are the relevant gate. Look for the platform’s current options for purchase approval, spending authorization, a family passcode, or requiring an adult account to complete a transaction.

- Identify the platform account being charged. A child may use a different platform profile from the Epic display name.
- Open the platform’s family or parental-controls settings. Menu names and locations vary by country, device model, and software version.
- Require approval or a passcode for purchases. If the platform offers separate controls for adding a payment method and approving a purchase, enable both where appropriate.
- Review saved cards, wallets, and subscriptions. Remove payment methods the child should not be able to use, and check recurring services separately from one-time purchases.
- Repeat on every platform the child uses. A restriction on one console does not automatically follow the child to another console, a phone, or a PC.
Epic’s controls and platform controls can coexist. A platform approval may appear first, while an Epic PIN may still be requested for an Epic-processed transaction. Neither system should be described as covering the other’s billing route.
Understand the $100 daily limit for players under 13
Epic says a player who indicates they are under 13 receives a $100-per-day limit on purchases made through Epic payment. The limit applies to daily purchases for Fortnite and other listed Epic products when Epic processes the payment.
If a purchase would exceed that limit, Epic says: “Any purchases above the daily spending limit will require that a parent or guardian’s Parental Controls PIN is entered to override the limit and complete the purchase.” The PIN therefore acts as an adult override; it is not an automatic denial of every purchase once the threshold is reached.

- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

- The figure is a policy limit stated by Epic, not a bank, card, or platform-wide spending cap.
- It does not cover purchases billed through PlayStation, Steam, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, or another gaming platform.
- It does not cover purchases made with V-Bucks.
- It applies when the player has indicated they are under 13; it is not a universal Fortnite limit for every account.
For a complete spending boundary, combine this Epic rule with the platform’s own purchase controls and with limits on how the child obtains V-Bucks. A child could remain below the Epic threshold while spending through a platform or an existing V-Bucks balance.
Control V-Bucks and paid random items separately
V-Bucks are an in-game currency, so the Epic payment PIN and the under-13 daily limit do not govern a purchase made from that balance. Decide separately whether the child may acquire V-Bucks and what kinds of content may be bought with them.
Paid random-item setting
Epic provides a parental-control setting that can allow or block spending V-Bucks, or content bought with V-Bucks, on paid random items. This is a targeted control for randomized rewards rather than a universal block on every V-Bucks purchase.

Epic says the feature is not available in every region. If the setting is missing from the account, do not assume that the account is protected by it or that the child’s region supports the same options as another family’s region. Use the controls that are actually offered on the account and apply platform purchase restrictions to any real-money V-Bucks acquisition.
Keep the currency trail visible
- Check whether V-Bucks were earned, transferred, or purchased, since the control for spending the balance is different from the control for buying the currency.
- Review the Fortnite purchase history and the platform’s transaction history when an item is disputed.
- Explain to the child that an existing balance can be spent even when the Epic payment PIN is enabled.
Check whether the account is a Cabined Account
Epic uses Cabined Accounts for players under 13 or below the relevant regional age of digital consent, whichever is higher. While parental consent is pending, real-money purchases and some other features are disabled.

What a parent should do
- Confirm the account’s age and consent state. The available features may reflect the child’s age and the digital-consent threshold in the account’s region.
- Complete consent through Epic’s current process if appropriate. Until consent is completed, expect real-money purchasing and certain social or account features to remain unavailable.
- Keep platform controls in place after consent. Consent changes account capabilities; it does not configure the family settings on a console, PC, or mobile device.
Do not treat a Cabined Account as a permanent spending guarantee. Its restrictions depend on the account’s status, and other billing routes remain separate.

Fortnite and Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) provide account-level time controls. Epic says these controls can set daily amounts and time windows and can separate Play time from Create time. Because they follow the same Epic account, the limits apply when that account moves between supported devices.
- Open the Fortnite/UEFN time-control settings associated with the child’s Epic account. Use the current labels in the account or in the game’s parental-controls interface.
- Set a daily Play allowance. Choose the amount of time that may be used for playing Fortnite.
- Set a separate Create allowance if the child uses UEFN. This prevents creation sessions from silently consuming or bypassing the rule you intended for play.
- Define allowed time windows. A daily amount controls duration; a window controls when the account may use the feature. Configure both when bedtime or school hours matter.
- Apply device or console schedules as a second layer. Those restrictions are independent and can further reduce the time available under the Epic account setting.
- Review the settings after a device change. Account-level limits should travel with the Epic sign-in, while a newly added console, phone, or computer may need its own local family schedule.
When an account limit and a device limit overlap, the child can be stopped by whichever restriction is reached first. Device settings do not expand the account’s allowance, and the account setting does not replace a console’s bedtime or app limit.

Use this order to avoid leaving a gap between payment, currency, age, and time controls.
- List every sign-in and device. Record the Epic account, each console or computer profile, and any phone or tablet used for Fortnite.
- Map each payment route. Mark which purchases use Epic payment, which are billed by a platform, and whether the child can spend V-Bucks already in the account.
- Secure Epic payments. Set the Epic parental PIN requirement and remove stored PC payment methods that are not needed.
- Secure platform payments. Enable purchase approval or a passcode on every platform account and review cards, wallets, and recurring charges.
- Review the V-Bucks setting. If the paid-random-item control is available in the account’s region, choose whether to allow it; otherwise rely on the remaining controls and supervision.
- Check account status. Determine whether the child is in a Cabined Account awaiting consent and explain which features remain unavailable.
- Set Play, Create, and time-window rules. Add independent device schedules for consoles and personal devices.
- Document the arrangement. Keep the PIN, platform passcodes, enabled settings, and the date of your review in a private record so another guardian can maintain the same boundaries.
Troubleshoot the most common surprises
| What happened | Likely explanation | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| A purchase completed without the Epic PIN | The charge may have gone through a console or other platform, or it may have used V-Bucks. | Inspect the receipt and configure the billing platform or V-Bucks controls. |
| The child can still buy after the $100 threshold | The transaction may not be an Epic-payment purchase, or an adult override may have been entered. | Check the merchant, payment route, and who has access to the PIN. |
| The paid-random-item option is missing | Epic says the feature is not available in every region. | Confirm the account region and use the controls shown for that account. |
| Fortnite time limits work on one device but not another | A local device rule may be different, or the child may be using another Epic sign-in. | Verify the Epic account and review that device’s independent family settings. |
| The child can use a gift-card balance but cannot access Fortnite Crew | Epic’s Cabined Account guidance allows the balance for Epic games such as Fortnite but excludes Fortnite Crew. | Check the account’s consent status and the product being purchased. |
| A restriction cannot be removed completely | The parental-controls PIN itself cannot be deleted after setup. | Change or turn off the individual setting that is no longer needed, while keeping the PIN secured. |
What to review each month
- Epic and platform purchase histories, including any recurring charges.
- Stored payment methods and who knows each passcode.
- The child’s V-Bucks balance and recent item purchases.
- Epic account age, consent, and Cabined Account status.
- Play and Create allowances, time windows, and each device’s local schedule.
- Whether a new device or platform has been added without its own family controls.
The dependable result is a layered arrangement: Epic settings govern Epic’s own payment route and account-wide Fortnite/UEFN controls, platform settings govern platform billing and local device access, and V-Bucks require their own review. Checking all three areas is what prevents a control that looks enabled from being bypassed by a different purchase path.
