There is no single “turn off AI” switch on Xiaomi phones. Control is split between app permissions, optional settings in the Mi AI suggestions widget, feature-specific privacy notices, and (for Xiaomi HyperAI Engine) clearing service data. Review the feature you actually use, deny only the permissions it needs, and check whether its notice describes on-device storage, cloud processing, or both.
What you can—and cannot—turn off
Xiaomi documents controls at the feature, service and permission levels rather than one universal AI master switch. Revoking a permission can limit the feature that depends on it, but it does not disable every AI capability on the phone. Clearing Xiaomi HyperAI Engine data is also a separate action: it removes that service’s stored data, but Xiaomi does not state that it stops all AI functions.
Availability is another limit. Xiaomi says HyperAI features are offered only on selected models, languages and regions. The privacy policy also restricts some services to particular device models and system versions. Therefore, a setting shown in a Xiaomi demonstration may not appear on your handset, even when both phones use HyperOS.

Before changing permissions, verify that the feature is present and identify the software build on which it runs. Use this order:

- Open the feature or app you want to control. If it is missing, your model, system version, language or region may not support it.
- Check Settings > About phone for the model and HyperOS version. Xiaomi’s feature pages are not a guarantee of support for every model.
- Confirm the phone’s language and region under the relevant language and regional settings. AI language coverage can differ from model coverage.
- Read the feature’s privacy information before granting access. Xiaomi says it explains a permission’s purpose and possible effect when the request is made.
HyperOS 3 lists examples such as AI Writing, AI Speech Recognition, AI Search and AI Translate. Depending on availability, these can include writing styles, smart screen recognition, live transcription, recording summaries, on-device content search, web answers, interpretation, subtitles and offline face-to-face conversation translation.
How to manage ordinary app permissions
For a Xiaomi app or another app that invokes an AI function, Xiaomi’s support guidance gives two routes. Names can vary slightly between phone models and software releases.
Route 1: from the app icon
- Long-press the app icon on the home screen or in the app drawer.
- Tap Application info.
- Choose Permission management.
- Review each listed permission. Set it to the available option that matches your needs, such as allowing access, allowing only while using the app, asking each time, or denying it.
- Return to the feature and test the operation. If it no longer works, the denied permission is probably required for that operation.
Route 2: from Settings
- Open Settings > Apps > Permissions.
- Select the permission category or the app you want to inspect.
- Change only the permissions relevant to the feature, then close Settings.
- Reopen the app and test a representative action, such as a transcription or search.
Permission controls are narrower than an AI switch. For example, denying location can affect a context-aware feature that uses location, while a writing tool that does not request location may continue to work. Xiaomi says that withholding a requested permission can make a particular capability unavailable or limited.
HyperAI Engine permissions and data controls
Xiaomi’s HyperAI Engine privacy policy identifies four permissions that users can turn on or off: location, Bluetooth, device status and device ID. Manage them through the same permission-management screens, selecting Xiaomi HyperAI Engine or the requesting Xiaomi component when it appears.
What each permission can affect

The policy does not promise that denying one item blocks all data collection or all AI processing. Treat each permission as a targeted control and review other optional settings separately.

How to clear Xiaomi HyperAI Engine data
Use this only when you intend to remove the service’s stored data or reset its local state. It is not equivalent to changing permissions.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Choose Manage apps.
- Find and open Xiaomi HyperAI Engine.
- Use the available storage or data-clearing command and confirm.
Menu wording can differ by HyperOS release. Clearing data may reset local preferences or require a feature to initialize again. Xiaomi’s policy does not say that this step disables every HyperAI feature, so check permissions and optional privacy settings as well if your goal is broader restriction.

Optional controls in the Mi AI suggestions widget
Some controls are not exposed as ordinary Android permissions. Xiaomi points to privacy settings in the Mi AI suggestions widget for two optional programs: personalized recommendations and the User Experience Program. The exact switches shown can differ by model, system version and region.
Personalized recommendations
Xiaomi says precise and approximate location, device status, step count, and app installation or usage information may be used to create aggregated profiles. Those profiles are saved to Xiaomi servers in encrypted form. The policy says you can manage privacy settings or turn off personalized recommendations at any time in the Mi AI suggestions widget’s privacy settings.
- Locate the Mi AI suggestions widget on the home screen.
- Open its privacy settings.
- Review the personalized-recommendations control and disable it if you do not want those recommendations.
- Read any confirmation text, because disabling recommendations can change the suggestions shown by the widget.
User Experience Program
The policy describes a User Experience Program involving location and Bluetooth MAC address. It says this information is processed on-device and uploaded to the cloud, and that you can unenroll through the widget’s privacy settings. This is an analytics and improvement choice, not a universal switch for writing, search, translation or other AI tools.

Which Xiaomi AI features keep information on the phone?
“On-device” can describe storage, processing, or both. Xiaomi’s notices make feature-specific claims, so do not extend one feature’s local-storage statement to the entire HyperAI system.
HyperAI Search
Xiaomi says HyperAI Search can use information stored in Gallery, Recorder, Notes, Messaging, File Manager and contacts. For this feature, the policy says the information is stored only on-device. That statement addresses the data used by HyperAI Search; it does not establish that every AI search-related answer or every other AI feature is local.
Commands and proactive intelligence
The policy describes proactive-intelligence signals that can include a device identifier, operations and behaviors, call status, approximate location, device state, app status and usage time, Bluetooth connection details, WLAN information and switch states. If a command relates to what is displayed, screen content may be collected. For certain commands that access or edit multimedia items, Xiaomi says the data involved is stored only on-device.
These are conditional descriptions, not a statement that all screens, commands or signals are continuously collected. The command and the information it needs determine which category applies.
When Xiaomi AI may use cloud or third-party processing
Several Xiaomi statements describe cloud involvement alongside local safeguards. HyperOS 3 presents an “edge-to-cloud AI data security” approach that includes on-device privacy storage and confidential cloud computing. HyperOS 2 separately says Private Cloud Compute is used for some third-party large-model capabilities, including AI Speech Recognition, AI Writing, AI Interpreter and AI Subtitles. These statements are feature-specific and should not be read as proof that all processing happens solely on the handset.

A cloud reference does not by itself describe what is retained, for how long or whether content is used for another purpose. Use the current notice for the exact feature and your region before entering sensitive material.
How to answer “Does Xiaomi HyperAI send my data to the cloud?”
The accurate answer is: sometimes, depending on the feature and optional program. HyperAI Search is described as storing its relevant information only on-device. Personalized recommendations involve encrypted profiles saved to Xiaomi servers, and the User Experience Program uploads specified information after on-device processing. Other capabilities can use cloud or confidential-cloud infrastructure, while some command data is described as local.
To determine the answer for a specific action, identify three things:
- The feature name: Search, Writing, Speech Recognition, Translate, recommendations and proactive commands can have different practices.
- The data involved: A note, screen, recording, contact, location signal and Bluetooth connection are not interchangeable categories.
- The current notice: Read the privacy information shown for your model, HyperOS version, language and region.
A practical privacy review workflow
Use this workflow when installing an update, enabling a new AI tool or troubleshooting an unexpected permission request.

Open the AI tools you use and note which ones appear on your phone. Do not assume that a feature listed for HyperOS 3 is available on your model.
- Record the requested data. When a prompt appears, read Xiaomi’s explanation of the permission’s purpose and possible effect. Decline requests unrelated to the action you want.
- Audit app permissions. Use Application info > Permission management or Settings > Apps > Permissions. Recheck after a major system or app update.
- Inspect optional programs. Open the Mi AI suggestions widget’s privacy settings and review personalized recommendations and User Experience Program enrollment.
- Read feature-specific notices. Look for whether the notice says data is stored on-device, processed on-device, uploaded, or handled by a cloud or third-party service.
- Clear service data only when appropriate. Use Settings > Apps > Manage apps > Xiaomi HyperAI Engine when a reset is intended; do not treat it as a substitute for permission changes.
- Test the result. Run the exact action you care about, such as searching a note, transcribing a recording or generating a translation. Record what stopped working before deciding whether to restore a permission.
Troubleshooting common outcomes
The AI feature disappeared after a permission change
Restore only the permission the feature identifies as required, then test again. If no permission restores it, check model, system version, language and region support. A feature can also be limited by a service update rather than by your permission choice.

Turning off location did not stop all AI activity
Location is one input among several. Other features may use device status, app information, screen context, local files or connectivity. Review the relevant app and widget controls instead of expecting one denial to affect unrelated tools.
Clearing HyperAI Engine data did not disable AI
Clearing data resets that service’s stored state. It does not revoke permissions and Xiaomi does not describe it as a global disable. Audit permissions and the Mi AI suggestions widget separately.
A feature works online but not offline
Do not infer that every Xiaomi AI function is local because one feature works without a connection. HyperAI Search and selected multimedia command data have on-device statements, while other capabilities may use cloud or confidential-cloud processing. Check the notice for the exact function.
The privacy menu is missing
The widget or switch may not be included on your model, system build or regional release. Confirm that the relevant feature is supported and install available Xiaomi system updates. If the feature is not present, there may be no corresponding local control to expose.
Limits of Xiaomi’s current documentation
Xiaomi’s published material does not establish that every phone has identical settings, that every AI feature has a dedicated global toggle, or that every AI operation remains local. It also does not provide a percentage of AI processing performed on-device. Treat “on-device” claims as scoped to the named feature, data or command, and avoid assuming that a privacy control affects unrelated services.
The HyperAI Engine privacy policy cited here is version v20260803, effective August 3, 2026. Menu labels and feature availability can change with later releases, so the privacy notice displayed on your phone is the most relevant reference for the build you are using.
