On a Samsung Galaxy phone, manage an app’s notification permission at Settings > Apps > [app] > Notifications. Turn Allow notifications off to silence that app completely, or leave it on and change only the notification categories that create unwanted sound, vibration, or pop-ups. Exact labels and available categories vary by Galaxy model and One UI version, so use Settings search for “Notifications” or the app name if your menus differ.
What “notification permission” controls on Galaxy phones
Notification permission determines whether an app may deliver alerts through the notification shade and, depending on your settings, sound, vibration, banners or pop-ups. It is separate from permissions for camera, location, contacts, microphone and other device data. Disabling notifications does not automatically revoke those other permissions, and revoking a data permission does not necessarily stop every notification.
Samsung’s Galaxy support instructions use Settings > Apps > select an app > Notifications as the main route. Samsung notes that “Menu layouts and options may vary slightly depending on the device model or software version.” Samsung’s Galaxy notification guide was last updated June 9, 2026. Google gives the same warning in its general Android guidance: “Important: Settings can vary by phone.” Google’s Android notification guide is useful when a Galaxy menu uses different wording.

Use this when you want a complete, persistent change for one application rather than a temporary quiet period.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Choose the app. If the list is long, use the search control in the Apps screen.
- Tap Notifications.
- Switch Allow notifications off to block that app’s notifications, or on to permit them again.
With the switch off, the app cannot present its normal notification alerts. This does not uninstall the app or stop it from performing other permitted functions. If you only dislike one type of alert, do not use the main switch; keep it on and adjust the relevant category instead.

Stop certain notifications without silencing the whole app
Many apps divide alerts into notification categories. A messaging app might expose separate categories for conversations, calls or service notices; another app may offer a different set. Categories are supplied by the app, so their names and number differ by app, Galaxy model and software version.
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Select the app and tap Notifications.
- Leave Allow notifications enabled.
- Tap the category or categories you want to change, if categories are shown.
- Disable only the unwanted category, or change its available sound, vibration and pop-up options.
This approach preserves useful alerts while removing a noisy stream. For example, you can keep security alerts enabled while turning off promotional or general-update categories when the app exposes those controls. Android’s notification documentation also describes category-level control, while noting that settings vary by phone. Google Android Help

If you have a notification in the shade and are unsure which app or category generated it, Android provides a shortcut:
- Swipe down to open the notification shade.
- Touch and hold the notification.
- Tap its settings control when it appears.
- Change the app or category options presented by your Galaxy.
Google documents this as a general Android method. Samsung may use a slightly different icon or label, but the long-press route is useful when you want to identify the exact alert source before changing anything.
Choose sound, vibration, pop-up and silent behavior
Turning an app on does not require every alert to interrupt you. A Galaxy notification category can expose controls for sound, vibration and pop-ups. The exact controls depend on the app and device.

Alerting notifications
Android describes alerting notifications as notifications that can make a sound and appear on the lock screen. On Galaxy phones, an alerting category may also show a banner or pop-up according to the options on that category’s page.

Android’s general guidance describes silent notifications as alerts that do not make a sound or vibrate but remain available in the notification shade. If your Galaxy offers an alert-versus-silent choice, use silent for information you want to review later without an interruption. Samsung’s labels can differ by model and One UI version, so follow the choices shown on your phone.
Pop-ups and banners
A pop-up is the temporary on-screen presentation that appears while you are using the phone. Disabling pop-ups for a category can reduce interruptions while leaving the notification in the shade. If a category page offers separate sound, vibration and pop-up switches, change only the behavior you want to remove.
Control lock-screen visibility and sensitive content
Notification permission and lock-screen privacy are different decisions. An app can be allowed to notify you while its message text is hidden from the lock screen, or while all lock-screen notifications are hidden by a system setting.
- Use the Galaxy’s lock-screen notification settings to decide whether notifications appear on the lock screen.
- Use the sensitive-content option, when available, to hide message details while still showing that an alert exists.
- Check both the system lock-screen setting and any per-app or per-category controls. A system-wide choice can affect every app, while some Galaxy versions also provide more specific controls.

Use Do Not Disturb or a mode for temporary quiet
Do Not Disturb (DND) and Android modes are better than changing every app when the goal is temporary or scheduled quiet. They can filter interruptions by people and apps and can control whether alarms or other interruption types are allowed. Your app notification permissions remain enabled, so normal delivery resumes when the mode ends.

Choose DND for a temporary interruption filter
Open the phone’s Settings, search for Do not disturb, and review the people, apps and other interruption rules shown on your Galaxy. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance specifically advises checking DND when an expected app alert is missing and allowing selected apps through it when appropriate. Google’s Modes and Do Not Disturb guide explains the general Android behavior.
Choose a mode for a schedule or situation
A mode is useful for recurring conditions such as sleep or work when your Galaxy offers a schedule and a defined list of allowed interruptions. Use the mode’s app filters rather than repeatedly turning individual app permissions off and on.
DND or a mode does not replace app notification settings. If an app is blocked by Allow notifications, no DND exception can restore that permission; first enable the app notification permission, then use DND to filter when it may interrupt you.

The word “permission” covers two related but separate areas in Android:

Google Play Help documents managing permissions per app or by permission type. Google’s app-permission guide explains that changing a feature permission can affect what an app can do, while changing notification delivery affects how it alerts you. Do not disable camera, location or contact access merely to stop a banner; use the Notifications page for that job.

- Open Secure Folder and its settings.
- Go to Notifications > App notifications.
- Select the affected app and enable Allow notifications.
- Where the option exists, enable Allow background activity while locked.
- Temporarily turn off Power saving while diagnosing the problem.
- Check Settings > Notifications > Do not disturb and make sure DND is not filtering the alert.
- Check whether Secure Folder is listed under Sleeping apps or Deep sleeping apps; remove it from those lists if it is preventing background delivery.
Samsung says Allow background activity while locked is available only in the latest Secure Folder app version. If your version does not show it, continue with the notification, DND, power-saving and sleeping-app checks that are present on your phone. Samsung’s Secure Folder notification troubleshooting page
Galaxy Store’s notification-category exception
Samsung’s Galaxy Store support instructions describe a product-specific limitation: Galaxy Store notifications cannot be completely turned off from that support flow, but individual Notification categories can be switched off. Treat this as a Galaxy Store exception, not a rule for every app. For other apps, first check whether the app exposes categories before assuming that only an all-or-nothing switch is available. Which control should you use?

Troubleshoot an app that still does not alert
Work through these checks in order, changing only the setting related to the symptom:
- Confirm the app switch: Open Settings > Apps > app > Notifications and verify Allow notifications is on.
- Inspect categories: If only one kind of alert is missing, open the category list and check that the relevant category is enabled.
- Check DND or a mode: A temporary filter may be suppressing the app even though its permission is enabled.
- Check lock-screen settings: If the alert appears in the shade but not on the lock screen, review lock-screen visibility and sensitive-content choices rather than the app permission.
- Check Secure Folder separately: Repeat the Secure Folder notification and background-activity checks for apps installed inside it.
- Review power and sleeping-app restrictions: Samsung’s Secure Folder guidance specifically calls out Power saving, Sleeping apps and Deep sleeping apps when background notifications are missing.
- Use Settings search: Search for “Notifications,” “Do not disturb,” “Permission manager” or the app name if your model uses a different menu arrangement.
These checks distinguish a permission problem from a delivery-filter problem. For example, an alert that is present in the shade but absent from the lock screen points to visibility settings; an alert that never arrives may require checking the app switch, category, DND, background activity or battery restrictions.

Galaxy phones receive different One UI and Android versions, and Samsung changes labels and available controls by model. An app may expose categories on one phone and fewer controls on another. Google’s general Android documentation also states that settings can vary by phone, and its Modes guidance notes that some instructions apply only to Android 14 and newer.

When a path does not match exactly:
- Open Settings and use the search icon.
- Search for Notifications and open the result that leads to app notifications or notification settings.
- Search for the app name if you cannot find it under Apps.
- Compare the labels on the app’s Notifications page rather than assuming a missing category is hidden elsewhere.
The underlying choices remain the same: app-wide permission, category-level delivery, lock-screen privacy, temporary interruption filters and separate data permissions. The location and wording of those choices are what can change.
Practical examples
Turn off every alert from a shopping app
Go to Settings > Apps > shopping app > Notifications and switch Allow notifications off. This is a persistent app-level change, so turn the switch back on when you want the app to notify you again.
Keep messages but remove promotional alerts
Open the app’s Notifications page, leave Allow notifications on, and disable only the promotional or marketing category if the app provides one. Message categories remain available.
Keep an alert private on the lock screen
Leave the app notification enabled, then adjust lock-screen notification visibility or sensitive-content display. The phone can show that an alert exists without showing its message text, depending on the lock-screen options available on your Galaxy.
Quiet work apps overnight
Keep each app’s permission enabled and configure Do Not Disturb or an appropriate mode for the overnight schedule. Add allowed people or apps according to the options shown by your Galaxy so urgent alerts can still interrupt you.
