Start with HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management. That screen shows what is using space and lets you delete software you are not playing without deleting its save data. Back up screenshots and videos before removing them, and add storage only with a microSD Express card: Switch 2 supports cards up to 2 TB, while the older, non-Express cards used by the original Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 digital games.

Check what is using space before you delete anything

Nintendo Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, but some of that capacity is reserved for system use. Nintendo does not state the resulting usable figure on its support page, so the number shown on your console is the one that matters. Open HOME Menu → System Settings → Data Management to see available space and review stored data. The official Nintendo Data Management FAQ is the reference for these controls.

  1. From the HOME Menu, select System Settings.
  2. Choose Data Management.
  3. Review the storage summary and the list of installed software and other stored data before choosing an action.

This check prevents you from buying a card when deleting one unplayed download would solve the immediate problem, and it shows whether captures or installed games are the main cause of the shortage. It also gives you a useful baseline: after deleting software or captures, return to Data Management and check the available space again rather than estimating how much you freed.

The headline capacity is not a promise that every byte is available for games. System use takes a portion, and the support information does not give a fixed usable-capacity number. Do not compare your console’s available-space figure directly with 256 GB and assume something is missing. Use the on-console amount when deciding whether to remove a download or expand storage.

Samsung microSD Express Card – 256GB for Nintendo Switch™ 2
  • Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
  • Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.

Delete an unplayed game without losing its progress

The least disruptive way to reclaim space is to delete downloaded software that you are not currently using. In Data Management, select the software-management option, choose a game, and confirm deletion. Nintendo says deleted software can be downloaded again later.

Deleting the software package is different from deleting save data. Nintendo states that on Switch 2, game save data is stored in the console’s System Memory, not on the microSD Express card. Removing the downloaded game therefore leaves its local save in place, so reinstalling the software can let you continue with the existing progress.

Do not select an account-deletion command while trying to remove a game. Nintendo says deleting a user account removes that user’s saves and that those saves cannot be restored. Software cleanup and user-account deletion are separate operations with very different consequences.

What deletion does and does not remove

Action Effect on installed game files Effect on save data Can you get the game back?
Delete downloaded software Frees the space used by that software Save remains in System Memory Yes. Nintendo says the software can be redownloaded
Delete a user account Account-associated data is removed That user’s saves are removed and cannot be restored, according to Nintendo Re-downloading software does not restore the deleted saves

If a game is available digitally through your Nintendo account, redownloading it still requires enough free space and an internet connection. The important storage distinction is that the game’s install can be removed while the save remains on the console. Before deleting a title, make sure you know which user profile owns or uses it, particularly if several people play on the same console. Removing the software is not a way to transfer a save between users or cards.

Deleting and redownloading is a reasonable alternative to buying a card if you rotate through a small number of games. It is less convenient if you regularly switch among a large library, have a slow or limited internet connection, or want to play while away from a reliable connection. In those cases, keeping more titles installed on internal storage or a compatible card may better fit your habits.

Free space used by screenshots and videos

Captures are separate from game software and can quietly consume a large amount of internal storage. Before deleting local screenshots or videos, preserve anything you want to keep by uploading it to the Nintendo Switch App or transferring it to a computer. After confirming that the copies are available, delete the local captures through the console’s Data Management controls if you need the space.

This backup step matters because deleting the local capture is not the same as removing an installed game: the console will not recreate a deleted screenshot or video for you. Nintendo’s Data Management FAQ covers the supported capture-transfer options. Nintendo also says that external USB hard drives are not currently supported as an expansion method for Switch 2 storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you are cleaning up captures, decide which items you genuinely want to keep before removing anything. A backup is useful only if the files have actually arrived at the destination and can be opened there. Do not assume that simply beginning an upload or copy has preserved every item. Once you have verified the copies, deleting unneeded local captures can provide another way to make room without touching game software or save data.

When a microSD Express card is the right solution

A card is useful when you want to keep more downloaded games installed instead of repeatedly deleting and redownloading them. Switch 2 requires the microSD Express standard for game storage and supports capacities up to 2 TB. Nintendo says these cards are sold separately. Check the product packaging and specifications for the Express designation before buying; capacity alone does not make an older card compatible.

An ordinary, non-Express microSD card that was used with the original Nintendo Switch cannot save or load digital games on Switch 2. The card may have been perfectly usable in the older console, but it is not a substitute for a microSD Express card on Switch 2. Nintendo’s microSD Express FAQ describes the supported standard and the one-card recommendation.

Storage approach Best fit Important limitation
Keep games in System Memory A small active library and a reader who prefers not to buy a card Internal space is limited; part of the advertised 256 GB is reserved for system use
Delete and redownload games Readers willing to download titles again when they return to them Redownloading needs time, an internet connection and enough free space
Move eligible software to microSD Express A larger installed library on a compatible card Some data cannot move, and moving does not permanently determine where future data is installed
Replace a full microSD Express card A library that exceeds the current card’s capacity Requires a computer-based copy process; Nintendo recommends keeping one card per console

There is no Nintendo-prescribed capacity that fits every player. Base the choice on the size of your digital library, how many captures you keep, your budget and how willing you are to redownload games. The official material does not provide independent speed benchmarks, comparative testing or a universal capacity recommendation. It does state that the Express standard provides faster access than older microSD cards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of a card as an option for keeping a larger installed library, not as a requirement for using the console. If you usually play a few games at a time and are comfortable downloading a title again later, deleting and reinstalling may be enough. If your library is large, you prefer to keep games ready to launch, or you often find that new downloads will not fit, an Express card can reduce how often you need to manage installations. Your capture habits matter too: keep personal media backed up and decide whether it belongs on the console before sizing a card around game files alone.

When shopping, verify the exact standard and capacity in the listing and on the package. A large capacity number does not make a card compatible if it is not microSD Express. Nintendo’s supported ceiling is 2 TB. There is no sourced basis for choosing a particular brand, retailer, or one-size-fits-all capacity here, so compare the product specifications with your needs and budget rather than relying on a universal recommendation.

Move eligible software between System Memory and the card

After inserting a compatible microSD Express card, use Nintendo’s move function rather than assuming every file can be relocated. The documented menu path is:

  1. Open System Settings from the HOME Menu.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Choose Move System / microSD Express Card Data.
  4. Select the data you want to move.
  5. Review the selection and confirm the transfer.

Save data cannot be migrated to the card. Some update data also cannot be moved, so the console may leave those files in their original location. Nintendo warns that this feature is not a way to specify a permanent install location. Continued play can cause update data to be stored in a different location later, even after you have moved the game’s eligible files. Read Nintendo’s complete move-data instructions if the console reports that particular data cannot be transferred.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The move command is for eligible stored data, not a general-purpose way to make the card the permanent destination for every future download or update. If a game still appears to use space in System Memory after a transfer, that does not necessarily mean the move failed: save data and some update data are not eligible to move. Check Data Management again to understand what remains rather than repeatedly trying to move files the console does not permit.

Also keep the save-data distinction in mind when planning storage. Moving software does not move the save with it, because the save remains in System Memory. That means a compatible card can hold eligible game files while the console’s system storage continues to hold progress. A card is not a backup location for game saves.

Use one card where possible, and plan replacement carefully

Nintendo recommends one microSD Express card per console. Software spread across multiple cards cannot later be combined into one card through the console’s move command. Swapping cards whenever a different game is needed also makes it harder to identify which card contains a title and increases the chance of misplacing the original data.

When a card is full or you want a larger replacement, Nintendo documents a computer-based copy procedure. You need a computer with a compatible card slot or a commercially available reader/writer, and the computer must be able to copy the card’s contents. Nintendo warns that non-Windows environments may not copy the contents correctly, so check the documented operating-system requirements before starting.

Safer replacement sequence

  1. Stop using the old card and leave its contents intact.
  2. Use the computer’s card slot or a compatible reader/writer to copy the entire card contents as Nintendo specifies.
  3. Copy the contents to the new microSD Express card using the documented procedure.
  4. Insert the replacement card into the console and verify that the expected software appears and launches.
  5. Only after verification should you erase, reformat or repurpose the old card.

A card reader is not needed for ordinary cleanup through System Settings. It becomes relevant for this replacement or migration workflow, and its interface and operating-system compatibility should be checked before purchase. Nintendo’s card-transfer instructions provide the exact copy requirements.

Do not treat the copy as complete just because the computer has finished a progress indicator. Follow Nintendo’s instructions, then verify the replacement in the console while the old card remains untouched. If the new card does not show the expected software, you still have the original contents available to troubleshoot or retry the documented process. The caution about non-Windows environments is a reason to check the official steps before beginning, not a reason to experiment with the only copy of your data.

Understand what a physical game-key card changes

A physical game-key card is not automatically a storage-saving alternative. Nintendo explains that a game-key card acts as a key used to download the full game data rather than containing the complete game on the card itself. You should therefore expect the title to use console or microSD Express storage after the download.

Nintendo also states that no individual game requires additional storage space to play, while its FAQ discusses game-key cards. Those statements do not mean a game-key card eliminates the need to manage downloaded data; check the specific title’s distribution details and the free-space requirement shown by the console.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, do not buy a physical game-key card assuming it holds the full game and frees the console from storing that download. The storage decision is still about the game data installed on the console or compatible card, plus how much free space is available for other stored content.

Choose the least disruptive fix for your situation

You only need a few gigabytes now

Inspect Data Management, back up captures you want to keep, and delete one or more unplayed software titles. This avoids buying hardware and leaves the associated saves in System Memory. Check the available-space figure again after cleanup to make sure the immediate issue is resolved.

You want a large library installed at the same time

Use a microSD Express card within the supported 2 TB maximum. Move eligible software through the documented menu, but leave room for data that Nintendo does not permit to migrate and remember that future updates are not locked to a permanent install location.

Your existing card is an original-Switch card

Do not use it for Switch 2 game storage. Replace it with a microSD Express card rather than troubleshooting an incompatibility that the standard cannot overcome. The old card’s capacity or past use in the original console does not change the Express requirement.

You mainly need room for captures

Back up screenshots and videos you want to keep to the Nintendo Switch App or a computer, verify the copies, and then remove local items you do not need on the console. A game-storage card is not a substitute for making a separate copy of captures you would be upset to lose.

Common mistakes and how to recover

“I deleted the game and my progress disappeared.”

Deleting software should not delete the save because saves are stored in System Memory. Confirm that you deleted the software rather than the user account, then redownload the title under the user profile that owns the save.

“My old Switch card is not recognized for games.”

Check whether it is a non-Express card. Original-Switch microSD cards do not save or load Switch 2 digital games; use a compatible microSD Express card instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The move command will not transfer everything.”

That is expected for save data and for some update data. The move feature handles eligible software and is not a permanent installation-location setting.

“I want to use two cards and combine them later.”

Nintendo recommends one card per console and says software on multiple cards cannot later be combined into one card. Select a capacity that suits your library or plan a complete replacement migration instead.

“I will copy the card on a non-Windows computer.”

Nintendo warns that non-Windows environments may not copy card contents correctly. Use the documented environment or verify the replacement thoroughly before touching the original card.

“Can I connect a USB hard drive instead?”

Nintendo says external USB hard drives are not currently supported as a Switch 2 storage expansion method. For supported game storage, use System Memory or a compatible microSD Express card.

Storage checklist before you delete or buy

  • Open System Settings → Data Management and identify the largest categories.
  • Use the console’s displayed available-space figure; Nintendo does not publish a fixed usable amount after system storage is reserved.
  • Back up screenshots and videos to the Nintendo Switch App or a computer before removing local captures.
  • Delete only software you are prepared to redownload; its save remains in System Memory.
  • Never delete the user account as a substitute for deleting a game.
  • If expanding, confirm the card is microSD Express and within the 2 TB supported maximum.
  • Use Move System / microSD Express Card Data for eligible files, knowing that saves and some update data cannot move.
  • For replacement, copy the old card with the documented computer procedure and keep it intact until the new card is verified.
  • Do not count on multiple cards being merged later or on a physical game-key card holding the full game data.

These steps let you recover space immediately without sacrificing progress, while reserving a microSD Express purchase for the cases where a larger installed library is worth the added hardware.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I check how much storage is available on Nintendo Switch 2?

From the HOME Menu, open System Settings → Data Management. The screen shows available space and lets you review stored data. Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, with a portion reserved for system use.

Will deleting a downloaded game delete my save data?

No. Nintendo says game save data is stored in System Memory, and deleting downloaded software does not delete its save. You can redownload the software later. Deleting a user account is different and removes that user’s saves, which Nintendo says cannot be restored.

Can I use my original Nintendo Switch microSD card for Switch 2 games?

No. Older, non-Express microSD cards cannot save or load digital games on Switch 2. The supported expansion standard is microSD Express.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I move saves to a microSD Express card?

No. Save data stays in System Memory and cannot be copied or saved to a microSD Express card. The move feature applies to eligible data; some update data also cannot be moved.

What is the largest microSD Express card Switch 2 supports?

Nintendo supports microSD Express cards up to 2 TB. There is no universal capacity recommendation; consider your installed library, captures, budget and willingness to redownload games.

Can I use an external USB hard drive to expand Switch 2 storage?

Nintendo says external USB hard drives are not currently supported as a storage expansion method for Switch 2.

Can I combine games stored on several microSD Express cards?

Nintendo recommends one card per console and says software on multiple cards cannot later be combined into one card. For a larger replacement, follow Nintendo’s computer-based card-copy procedure and keep the old card until the new one is verified.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does a physical game-key card store the full game?

Not necessarily. Nintendo describes a game-key card as a key used to download the full game data, rather than a card containing the complete game. The downloaded data still uses console or microSD Express storage.

The Bottom Line

Start in System Settings → Data Management, back up captures you want to keep, and remove unplayed software if you need space now. Deleting a game leaves its save in System Memory; deleting the user account does not. If you want a larger installed library, choose a microSD Express card up to 2 TB, move only eligible data, and follow Nintendo’s copy instructions carefully when replacing a card.
