For an existing fleet of Ubuntu servers, Canonical Landscape is the most direct single-place management solution. Install a Landscape Client on each server, connect those clients to a central Landscape Server, and use its web portal or API to view inventory, monitor health, apply package and security updates, run remote scripts, manage repositories, and delegate access. Add Ansible when you need repeatable configuration and application deployment, and use MAAS when you also need to discover, provision, deploy, or release physical and virtual machines.
The practical lifecycle is usually MAAS (infrastructure lifecycle) → Ansible (baseline and application configuration) → Landscape (continuous Ubuntu operations). Smaller environments that already have running servers can begin with Ansible and Landscape without introducing MAAS.

What “manage multiple Ubuntu servers from one place” actually involves
Centralized management is more than opening several SSH sessions at once. A useful control plane gives you a current view of every machine, lets you apply the same policy to a group, shows which systems need attention, and records who made a change.
For Ubuntu fleets, the central functions normally include:

- Inventory: host names, operating-system details, hardware information, packages, users, and services.
- Monitoring: health signals, alerts, and a persistent view of client state.

Landscape is designed to provide these ongoing Ubuntu-specific operations through one portal and an API. It does not replace every other tool: Ansible is better suited to declaring a desired configuration and applying it repeatedly, while MAAS controls the infrastructure on which operating systems run.

Choose Landscape for an already-running Ubuntu fleet
Landscape is the closest match when the question is, “How can I see and maintain all of my Ubuntu servers in one place?” The client-server design gives the portal a continuing connection to each machine. Administrators can inspect system and hardware details, organize hosts into groups, track alerts, apply updates, run scripts, manage repositories, and assign role-based permissions.

Ansible describes the state you want in YAML playbooks and uses SSH to orchestrate nodes rather than relying on an installed agent. That makes it effective for creating users, enforcing SSH policy, installing baseline packages, configuring services, deploying applications, and preparing a host before it enters normal operations.
Ansible is also useful when the fleet includes operating systems other than Ubuntu. Its cross-platform automation scope is broader, but it does not provide Landscape’s Ubuntu security-notice context or persistent management portal by itself.
Choose MAAS when machines themselves are part of the problem
MAAS is the infrastructure layer. It can discover and commission hardware, control network boot and power, deploy Ubuntu images, troubleshoot machines, and release or redeploy capacity. It supports bare-metal servers, virtual machines, and systems that were already deployed before MAAS took control.
If the servers are stable and already provisioned, adding MAAS may be unnecessary complexity. If hardware is frequently repurposed or you need a consistent path from an empty rack or VM pool to a running operating system, MAAS fills that gap.

A practical architecture for an Ubuntu server fleet
Use separate responsibilities instead of asking one product to perform every task:
- Infrastructure layer — MAAS, when required: discover machines, commission them, configure power and networking, deploy Ubuntu, and release capacity when a workload ends.
- Configuration layer — Ansible: apply the baseline that every host must have, then deploy role-specific software and application prerequisites.
- Operations layer — Landscape: maintain the long-lived view of Ubuntu systems, monitor them, coordinate security and package updates, manage repositories, run controlled scripts, and delegate administration.
This division also gives each action a clear owner. A replacement server is created in MAAS, made consistent by Ansible, and then enrolled in Landscape for day-to-day operations. An existing server can enter at the Ansible or Landscape stage directly.
How to set up centralized management step by step
1. Classify the fleet before selecting components
Make two lists: machines that already run Ubuntu and machines that must still be provisioned. For the first list, start with Landscape, Ansible, or both. For the second, decide whether MAAS is needed to control discovery, commissioning, deployment, power, and release.
Also record environment, application role, maintenance window, network location, and whether a host is physical or virtual. These attributes become useful groups in both Ansible inventory and Landscape.
2. Establish identity and secure connectivity
Landscape requires a client on every managed machine and a reachable Landscape Server. Ansible requires SSH access and credentials suitable for the tasks in your playbooks. Decide how administrators authenticate, where credentials are stored, which accounts can elevate privileges, and how access is removed when a person or host leaves the fleet.
Keep management traffic on a controlled network where possible. Restrict SSH to approved administration paths, protect private keys, and avoid embedding passwords or tokens in playbooks. A central tool improves visibility, but it also becomes a high-value target.

3. Build an Ansible baseline in version control
Use playbooks for settings that should be reproducible rather than making one-off changes on individual servers. A baseline commonly covers:
- Administrator and service accounts.
- SSH authentication and access policy.
- Approved package repositories.
- Required packages and service states.
- Logging, time, and other organization-wide settings.
- Prerequisites for each application role.
Keep the playbooks and inventories in version control. Separate shared defaults from environment-specific values, review changes before applying them, and make tasks safe to run more than once. Ansible’s desired-state model is most valuable when a playbook can be rerun after a rebuild without producing unpredictable side effects.
4. Install and register the Landscape Client
Install the Landscape Client on each Ubuntu machine and register it with the central Landscape Server. Confirm that the client can communicate reliably and that the host appears with the expected name and system details. Treat registration as part of the provisioning workflow so replacement machines do not depend on a manual, undocumented step.
Once clients report in, group systems by environment, role, ownership, or maintenance window. A database group, for example, may need a different update schedule and access policy from a development group even when both run the same Ubuntu release.
5. Verify inventory before changing anything
Use Landscape’s inventory and system details to check that every expected machine is present and that no retired host remains active. Compare the portal’s view with your Ansible inventory and MAAS records if all three tools are in use. Resolve duplicate names, stale clients, and missing hosts before launching a fleet-wide operation.
6. Define update and maintenance groups
Do not treat all servers as one batch by default. Create groups that reflect application dependencies and acceptable downtime. A common pattern is to update a small canary group first, then a larger non-production group, and finally production hosts during an approved window. Landscape provides the central view and update controls; your grouping and change policy determine how safely those controls are used.

7. Use Landscape for ongoing operations
From the portal or API, administrators can inspect alerts and system state, install or remove packages, apply upgrades, respond to Ubuntu security notices, execute remote scripts, manage repositories, and review hardware and software details. Role-based access control lets you delegate work without granting every operator unrestricted authority.
8. Feed rebuilt machines back through the same sequence
When a host is replaced, repeat the lifecycle rather than copying an ad-hoc configuration. MAAS can deploy the machine when infrastructure automation is required; Ansible applies the baseline and application role; the Landscape Client registers the host for continuing monitoring and maintenance. This makes a replacement an ordinary operation instead of a special emergency procedure.
How to update many Ubuntu servers safely
A centralized portal makes a broad update technically easy, but the change still needs a rollout plan. Use this sequence:
- Inventory the target group. Confirm Ubuntu release, role, owner, and maintenance window. Exclude hosts that are offline, in recovery, or subject to an application freeze.
- Check dependencies. Identify clustered services, replicated databases, load-balanced nodes, and software that must be drained or restarted in a particular order.
- Test on a canary. Apply the update to a representative, non-critical host and verify service health, logs, application checks, and monitoring.
- Roll out in batches. Use Landscape groups or API operations to move from canaries to larger sets. Keep enough capacity online for the application’s availability target.
- Record outcomes. Note successful hosts, failures, reboots, and systems that need manual remediation. Use the persistent inventory to find machines that did not complete the operation.
- Correct drift. If a package or service change was intentional, update the Ansible playbook so the next rebuild reproduces it. If it was accidental, restore the desired state through the playbook and then verify in Landscape.
Landscape supplies centralized execution and Ubuntu-specific update context; it does not remove the need to understand application order, reboot impact, or rollback options.

Canonical documents two broad Landscape deployment patterns. A single-server model is appropriate for a small environment where a simpler installation and fewer moving parts matter more than horizontal redundancy. A multi-server model uses HAProxy and multiple instances of supporting services for environments that need greater scale or availability.

Design the deployment for the Landscape release you intend to run. Service topology, sizing, and high-availability details are release-dependent, so use the applicable Canonical deployment documentation rather than copying assumptions from an older installation.

Operating the three tools together
Provisioning a new physical server
- MAAS discovers and commissions the hardware.
- MAAS deploys the selected Ubuntu image and configures the machine’s infrastructure settings.
- Ansible connects over SSH and applies users, access policy, repositories, packages, services, and the application role.
- The Landscape Client is installed and registered.
- Landscape groups the host with its peers and provides ongoing inventory, alerts, updates, scripts, and delegated access.
Adding an existing virtual machine
If the virtual machine already has Ubuntu and network connectivity, MAAS may not be necessary. Use Ansible to establish the baseline, install and register the Landscape Client, verify the host in the portal, and place it in the correct operational group.
Releasing capacity
When a physical or virtual machine is no longer needed, MAAS can release it for reuse or redeployment. Remove or disable its operational access according to your process, confirm that the old Landscape client is no longer treated as active, and preserve the relevant change records before the capacity is reassigned.

- Least privilege: use Landscape role-based access control and narrowly scoped administrative permissions.
- Credential separation: keep Ansible SSH credentials, Landscape administration, and infrastructure controls under separate roles where practical.
- Change review: review Ansible playbook changes and require an approved maintenance window for broad Landscape actions.
- Group boundaries: prevent a development operator from accidentally targeting production by using clear names, permissions, and environment separation.
- Client lifecycle: remove stale clients and records when machines are retired or rebuilt.
- Auditability: preserve playbook history and the central system’s operation records so you can identify what changed, when, and under whose authority.
- Recovery planning: protect the Landscape Server and its supporting services, document restoration procedures, and test access to management systems during an incident.
Common failure modes and fixes
A server is missing from Landscape
Check that the Landscape Client is installed, registered to the intended server, running, and able to reach it over the management network. Verify host naming and look for a stale record representing an older instance. If the machine was rebuilt, treat it as a new registration rather than assuming the old client identity is still valid.
Ansible cannot connect
Confirm DNS or address resolution, SSH reachability, the selected account, key permissions, privilege escalation settings, and any network policy between the control node and target. Fix connectivity before changing application tasks; otherwise a partial run can leave different hosts at different states.
Only some servers completed an update
Use Landscape’s host-level status to identify offline machines, failed package operations, pending reboots, or repository problems. Keep the successful hosts out of the retry set, correct the underlying issue on failed machines, and rerun only the required group.
A configuration keeps reverting
Determine which system is authoritative for that setting. If Ansible owns it, change the playbook and rerun it. If an operational adjustment was made in Landscape or directly on a host, decide whether that change should become the new desired state; otherwise the next Ansible run may restore the previous value.

The central management service is unavailable
Existing workloads may continue running, but you lose centralized visibility and the ability to launch normal Landscape operations until the service is restored. This is why high-availability designs, backups, documented recovery, and an emergency SSH or Ansible path matter for important fleets.
A decision checklist
- Are the machines already running Ubuntu, or do you need to provision them?
- Do you need a persistent portal with Ubuntu security and package context?
- Must configuration be reproducible after a rebuild?
- Is the fleet mixed-OS, making cross-platform automation important?
- Are physical machines frequently discovered, redeployed, or released?
- What maintenance windows and application dependencies constrain updates?
- How many administrators need delegated access?
- What outage can the management plane tolerate, and is a single Landscape server sufficient?
Bottom line
Use Canonical Landscape as the central operating console for an existing Ubuntu fleet. Pair it with Ansible when you need version-controlled, repeatable configuration and application deployment. Add MAAS when the work includes discovering, commissioning, deploying, powering, troubleshooting, or releasing bare-metal and virtual-machine capacity. Together, the tools cover the full lifecycle without forcing monitoring, configuration, and infrastructure provisioning into one system.
